"Efficiency" left the Big Three vulnerable to smart UAW tactics

Tomorrow (September 22), I'm (virtually) presenting at the DIG Festival in Modena, Italy. It's been 143 days since the WGA went on strike against the Hollywood studios. While early tactical leaks from the studios had studio execs chortling and twirling their mustaches about writers caving once they started losing their homes, the strikers aren't wavering – they're still out there, pounding the picket lines, every weekday:

The studios obviously need writers. That gleeful, anonymous studio exec who got such an obvious erotic charge at the thought of workers being rendered homeless as punishment for challenging his corporate power completely misread the room, and his comments didn't demoralize the writers. Instead, they inspired the actors to go on strike, too.

But how have the writers stayed out since May Day? How have the actors stayed out for 69 days since their strike started on Bastille Day? We can thank the studios for that! As it turns out, the studios have devoted so much energy to rendering creative workers as precarious as possible, hiring as little as they can getting away with and using punishing overtime as a substitute for adequate staffing that they've eliminated all the workers who can't survive on side-hustles and savings for six or seven months at a time.

But even for those layoff-hardened workers, long strikes are brutal, and of course, all the affiliated trades, from costumers to grips, are feeling the pain. The strike fund only goes so far, and non-striking, affected workers don't even get that. That's why I've been donating regularly to the Entertainment Community Fund, which helps all affected workers out with cash transfers (I just gave them another $500):

As hot labor summer is revealed as a turning point – not just a season – long strikes will become the norm. Bosses still don't believe in worker power, and until they get their minds right, they're going to keep on trying to starve their workforces back inside. To get a sense of how long workers will have to hold out, just consider the Warrior Met strike, where Alabama coal-miners stayed out for 23 months:

Which brings me to the UAW strike. This is an historic strike, the first time that the UAW has struck all of the Big Three automakers at once. Past autoworkers' strikes have marked turning points for all American workers. The 1945/46 GM strike established employers' duty to cover worker pensions, health care, and cost of living allowances. The GM strike created the American middle-class:

The Big Three are fighting for all the marbles here. They are refusing to allow unions to organize EV factories. Given that no more internal combustion cars will be in production in just a few short years, that's tantamount to eliminating auto unions altogether. The automakers are flush with cash, including billions in public subsidies from multiple bailouts, along with billions more from greedflation price-gouging. A long siege is inevitable, as the decimillionaires running these companies earn their pay by starving out their workers:

The UAW knows this, of course, and their new leadership – helmed by the union's radical president Shawn Fain – has a plan. UAW workers are engaged in tactical striking, shutting down key parts of the supply chain on a rolling basis, making the 90-day strike fund stretch much farther:

In this project, they are greatly aided by Big Car's own relentless pursuit of profit. The automakers – like every monopolized, financialized sector – have stripped all the buffers and slack out of their operations. Inventory on hand is kept to a bare minimum. Inputs are sourced from the cheapest bidder, and they're brought to the factory by the lowest-cost option. Resiliency – spare parts, backup machinery – is forever at war with profits, and profits have won and won and won, leaving auto production in a brittle, and easily shattered state.

This is especially true for staffing. Automakers are violently allergic to hiring workers, because new workers get benefits and workplace protection. Instead, the car companies routinely offer "voluntary" overtime to their existing workforce. By refusing this overtime, workers can kneecap production, without striking.

Enter "Eight and Skate," a campaign among UAW workers to clock out after their eight hour shift. As Keith Brower Brown writes for Labor Notes, the UAW organizers are telling workers that "It’s crossing an unofficial picket line to work overtime. It’s helping out the company":

Eight and Skate has already started to work; the Buffalo Ford plant can no longer run its normal weekend shifts because workers are refusing to put in voluntary overtime. Of course, bosses will strike back: the next step will be forced overtime, which will lead to the unsafe conditions that unionized workers are contractually obliged to call paid work-stoppages over, shutting down operations without touching the strike fund.

What's more, car bosses can't just halt safety stoppages or change the rules on overtime; per the UAW's last contract, bosses are required to bargain on changes to overtime rules:

Car bosses have become lazily dependent on overtime. At GM's "highly profitable" SUV factory in Arlington, TX, normal production runs a six-days, 24 hours per day. Workers typically work five eight-hour days and nine hours on Saturdays. That's been the status quo for 11 years, but when bosses circulated the usual overtime signup sheet last week, every worker wrote "a big fat NO" next to their names.

Writing for The American Prospect, David Dayen points out that this overtime addiction puts a new complexion on the much-hyped workerpocalypse that EVs will supposedly bring about. EVs are much simpler to build than conventional cars, the argument goes, so a US transition to EVs will throw many autoworkers out of work:

But the reality is that most autoworkers are doing one and a half jobs already. Reducing the "workforce" by a third could leave all these workers with their existing jobs, and the 40-hour workweek that their forebears fought for at GM inn 1945/46. Add to that the additional workers needed to make batteries, build and maintain charging infrastructure, and so on, and there's no reason to think that EVs will weaken autoworker power.

And as Dayen points out, this overtime addiction isn't limited to cars. It's also endemic to the entertainment industry, where writers' "mini rooms" and other forms of chronic understaffing are used to keep workforces at a skeleton crew, even when the overtime costs more than hiring new workers.

Bosses call themselves job creators, but they have a relentless drive to destroy jobs. If there's one thing bosses hate, it's paying workers – hence all the hype about AI and automation. The stories about looming AI-driven mass unemployment are fairy tales, but they're tailor made for financiers who get alarming, life-threatening priapism at the though of firing us all and replacing us with shell-scripts:

This is why Republican "workerism" rings so hollow. Trump's GOP talks a big game about protecting "workers" (by which they mean anglo men) from immigrants and "woke captialism," but they have nothing to say about protecting workers from bosses and bankers who see every dime a worker gets as misappropriated from their dividend.

Unsurprisingly, conservative message-discipline sucks. As Luke Savage writes in Jacobin, for every mealymouthed Josh Hawley mouthing talking points that "support workers" by blaming China and Joe Biden for the Big Three's greed, there's a Tim Scott, saying the quiet part aloud:

Reversing two generations of anti-worker politics is a marathon, not a sprint. The strikes are going to run for months, even years. Every worker will be called upon to support their striking siblings, every day. We can do it. Solidarity now. Solidarity forever.

for modern AU fics - what chinese media did diaspora consume?

making this post because some of us in the diaspora server were having a chat about what Chinese media "Diaspora Chinese" watched in the 90's - 2000's (and even sooner than that) while not having access to satellite chinese media or streaming services - this is in the context of writing modern AU fics based off Chinese media/novels (so your main character's grandpa or uncle is not, in fact, watching an episode of Friends or Shortland Street or something as flavour text because sorry what the hell-)

We generally watched a lot of stuff on VCDs, including bootlegged and non-bootlegged movies, shows, anime/donghua. My household had a whole VCD album of this, and a lot of VCDs (even if they were pirated editions) would have a fancy hardcover box with a magnetic clasp and some artwork representing the show on it.

All of this is Mandarin - so not TVB stuff, because I'm from Northern China and I don't know any cantonese - but Canto friends, please feel free to add to the list! This is mostly stuff my parents liked to watch, or I liked to watch with them, with the exception of a few which I mainly watched with friends/cousins when I was maybe (in most cases) eleven/twelve years old onwards. This is a pretty personal list, meant to give people general idea of a possible "ballpark" of sorts, and by no means exhaustive.

Now, for the list of shows which I can confirm I had or someone I know had on VCD or some kind of offline media format lol (I'll try add release year stamps and links to the EN wikipedia where possible):

Period dramas (mostly Qing Dynasty stuff):

Huan Zhu Gege 还珠格格 (1998, April-) This is a classic, so many memes come from this show; hugely popular series, basically cemented Zhang Tie Lin's face as the face of the Qing Emperor for about a decade. Tie Chi Tong Ya Ji Xiao Lan 铁齿铜牙纪晓岚 (2002-2010) - I loved this show as a kid and watched all four seasons on repeat with family... The "trio" in this show are well known and loved.

Amazing Detective Di Ren Jie / 神探狄仁杰 (2004) A very popular and addictive show. Ok now the Big Four:

Romance of 3 kingdoms 1994 / 三国演义 (1994) - a classic that has had many remakes, my older cousin would play this on repeat...

Hong Lou Meng/红楼梦 （1987） - another classic with many remakes, but I think the most recognised by the public one is the 1987 one.

Journey to the West / 西游记 live action (1986) - I think the 1986 version of the live action is the most recognised one. *Shui Hu Zhuan / 水浒传 (1998) - I am not too familliar with the live action of this one in my household tbh bc my mum doesn't like it lol (she keeps saying it's too depressing) but I'm sure it's up there with the rest of the big four, if anyone has an opinion on this one please let me know!

Modern setting shows:

My dad loved all the Sun Honglei (孙红雷 - actor name) stuff, iirc it was a lot of MinGuo period espionage stuff, your shanghai 1920's sxc aesthetic. This actor has been around since 1999? Qian Fu （潜伏）was very famous, and Ren Jian Zheng Dao Shi Cang Sang （人间正道是沧桑）。 These were around '08 and '09.

Chuang Guan Dong - 闯关东 (2008) (Baidu link, sorry - couldn't get an EN wikipedia one). This show was huge when it was airing, everyone was watching it. I was pretty young but even I watched it and got invested ... and I thought it was such an "old person" show at the time lmao. Xiao Bing Zhang Ga / 小兵张嘎 （2004） (sorry, again Baidu link) - yo, anti-japanese war movies set between 1937-1945 were crazy popular - this is one of them and was very popular):

Donghua/Anime (all the stuff kid me watched and some which I didn't but were popular):

喜羊羊与灰太狼 (2005-) Calabash Brothers / 葫芦兄弟 （1986-1987） Black Cat Detective / Hei Mao Jing Zhang 黑猫警长 （1984-2010） Lan Mao Tao Qi 3000 Wen 蓝蓝猫淘气3000问 AKA 蓝猫 (blue cat) (October 1999 - Present) Legend of Ne Zha 哪吒传奇 (2003) Journey to the West/Xi You Ji 西游记 This was truly the Donghua I grew up on from when I was a bb, the OP song and ED song are classic bangers all kids know. Slam Dunk/ 灌篮高手 - People truly watched a lot of anime that may or may not have been terribly dubbed into mando (possibly canto too). Late 80s and 90s kids were all over this, and Dragon Ball, Crayon Shinchan (labixiaoxin).

Taiwanese Dramas:

This is mid-late 2000's, I would be remiss to not talk about the Taiwanese dramas of this era. Mike He, Rainie Yang, Wu Zun (amongst many, many others) were huge. Stuff like Dou Niu Yao Bu Yao, it started with a kiss, Hua Yang Shao Nv (Taiwanese version of Hana Kimi) were all pretty popular. Not sure if these shows all hold up in 2023, but boy were they popular at the time.

Note about CNY:

For CNY, people would try to tune into 春节联欢晚会 (the CCTV official CNY show) at that One Friend Who Had China Satellite TV's house. Zhao Ben Shan / 赵本山 was a comedy staple, and the show would often feature people from the music industry to perform. Eventually these people became more and more relevant to my gen and Jay Chou etc started appearing.

Last but not least Xian Jiaaaan 仙剑:

In 2005 I was all over 仙剑奇侠传 (Chinese Paladin), based off the video game. This show was crazy popular and probably sent me and a whole lot of other kids into Xianxia / Wuxia hell (and Hu Ge hell, and later I came back to love Liu Yifei). Thank you. The OST is a true banger.

・Nagasaki Peace

「An atomic bomb exploded over Nagasaki on August 9, 1945, three days after the explosion of the first atomic bomb over Hiroshima. The bomb was assembled at Tinian Island on August 6. On August 8, Field Order No.17 issued from the 20th Air Force Headquarters on Guam called for its use the following day on either Kokura, the primary target, or Nagasaki, the secondary target. That same day, the Soviet Union declared war on Japan. The B-29 bomber "Bockscar" reached the sky over Kokura on the morning of August 9 but abandoned the primary target because of smoke cover and changed course for Nagasaki, the secondary target, and detonated the atomic bomb at 11:02 a.m.」

「長崎新聞の元論説委員長、高橋信雄さん（68）によると、浦上教会の主任司祭だった故川添猛神父は生前、高橋さんの取材に対して「私自身は平和祈念像の前には決して行かない」「巨大な芸術品の前で祈りをささげることなどできない。いくら像の名前に平和を冠していても、被爆者として、あの像とは相いれない」と語っていたという。」

「北村は戦前戦中にわたり、戦意高揚のための軍人像などを数多く手がけた。反核、反戦の美術評論家、故針生一郎氏は、北村について「戦後一転して平和や自由をうたいあげる公共彫刻に意欲を燃やしたが、戦前戦中の自作についての深い反省もなく百余歳まで生きたので、各地に醜悪無残な彫刻公害を残している」と酷評。その代表格が、北村の戦前戦中の作風そのままの男性裸像、平和祈念像ということなのだろう。」

「長崎の「被爆地域」は、原爆投下時の行政区域をもとにしている。爆心地から12キロ圏内で原爆に遭っても、国の指定する「被爆地域」外にいた人々は「被爆体験者」として、被爆者と線引きされてきた。」

「原爆投下から１ヵ月後、マンハッタン計画の副責任者であるトーマス・ファーレル氏は、下記のような声明を発表したとされる。 「広島・長崎では、死ぬべきものは死んでしまい、９月上旬において、原爆放射能の余燼ために苦しんでいる者は皆無だ」 残留放射能が存在しないとした理由について記者からの質問を受け、ファーレル氏は「相当の高度で爆発させた」ことを挙げていた。」

44-74939, North American P-51D-30-NA Mustang, NASM Silver Hill, Maryland, 09-08-1974 by Gordon Riley Via Flickr: North American built 44-74939 late in 1945. It was not delivered until July 1945 and never saw combat. The Army Air Forces first assigned the fighter to Andrews Field, outside Washington, D.C., and later to Freeman Field, Indiana. After eleven months and 211 flying hours of operational service, this Mustang was set aside as a museum specimen and later transferred to the National Air Museum. When NASM acquired this Mustang, it bore a proud admonition on both sides of the fuselage in large black letters: "Guard The Victory, Join the AAF." The airplane was probably used for recruiting drives toward the end of its military career. (Visible in my photo) For exhibit purposes, this Mustang has now been painted in the colors and markings of the 351st Fighter Squadron, 353rd Fighter Group, 8th Air Force. This unit converted from North American P-47 Thunderbolts to Mustangs on September 30, 1944, while stationed at Raydon, Suffolk, England.

🌷. తాత్పర్యం : తేజోపూర్ణములైన సర్వములందు తేజ:కారణుడతడే. భౌతికత్వమును అంధకారమునకు అతీతుడైన అతడు అవ్యక్తుడు. జ్ఞానము, జ్ఞానవిషయము, జ్ఞానగమ్యము కూడా అతడే. అతడే ఎల్లరి హృదయములందు స్థితుడై యున్నాడు.

🌷. భాష్యము : సూర్యుడు,చంద్రుడు, నక్షత్రములు వంటి తేజోమయములైన వాని తేజమునకు పరమాత్ముడే (దేవదేవుడే) కారణు. ఆధ్యాత్మికజగమునందు సూర్యుడు లేదా చంద్రుని అవసరము లేదనియు. దేవదేవుని తేజము అచ్చట విస్తరించియుండుటయే అందులకు కారణమనియు వేదవాజ్మయమున తెలుపబడినది. కాని భగవానుని తేజమైన ఆ బ్రహ్మజ్యోతి ఈ భౌతికజగమునందు మహాతత్త్వముచే (భౌతికాంశములు) కప్పుబడుట వలన ఇచ్చట వెలుగు కొరకు సూర్యుడు, చంద్రుడు, విద్యుత్తు మనకు అవసరములగుచున్నవి. ఇటువంటివి ఆధ్యాత్మికజగత్తున ఏమాత్రము అవసరముండవు.

భగవానుని ప్రకాశమానమైన కాంతి చేతనే సర్వమును ప్రకాశింపజేయబడుచున్నదని వేదములందు స్పష్టముగా తెలుపబడినది. దీనిని బట్టి అతడు భౌతికజగత్తు నందు స్థితిని కలిగిలేదని స్పష్టమగుచున్నది. ఆధ్యాత్మిక ఆకాశమున అత్యంతదూరములో దివ్యధామమునందు అతడు స్థితుడై యున్నాడు. ఈ విషయమును వేదములు సైతము నిర్ధారించియున్నవి. “ఆదిత్యవర్ణం తమస: పరస్తాత్ (శ్వేతాశ్వతరోపనిషత్తు 3.8) అనగా సూర్యుని వలె నిత్యకాంతిమంతుడైన భగవానుడు ఈ భౌతికజగత్తు అంధకారమునకు ఆవల నున్నాడు”. 🌹 🌹 🌹 🌹 🌹

18. jyotiṣām api taj jyotis tamasaḥ param ucyate jñānaṁ jñeyaṁ jñāna-gamyaṁ hṛdi sarvasya viṣṭhitam

🌷 Translation : He is the source of light in all luminous objects. He is beyond the darkness of matter and is unmanifested. He is knowledge, He is the object of knowledge, and He is the goal of knowledge. He is situated in everyone’s heart.

🌹 Purport : The Supersoul, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, is the source of light in all luminous objects like the sun, moon and stars. In the Vedic literature we find that in the spiritual kingdom there is no need of sun or moon, because the effulgence of the Supreme Lord is there. In the material world that brahma-jyotir, the Lord’s spiritual effulgence, is covered by the mahat-tattva, the material elements; therefore in this material world we require the assistance of sun, moon, electricity, etc., for light.

But in the spiritual world there is no need of such things. It is clearly stated in the Vedic literature that because of His luminous effulgence, everything is illuminated. It is clear, therefore, that His situation is not in the material world. He is situated in the spiritual world, which is far, far away in the spiritual sky. That is also confirmed in the Vedic literature. Āditya-varṇaṁ tamasaḥ parastāt (Śvetāśvatara Upaniṣad 3.8). He is just like the sun, eternally luminous, but He is far, far beyond the darkness of this material world. 🌹 🌹 🌹 🌹 🌹

శంఖచూడుడిట్లు పలికెను - ఓ సేనాపతీ! ఈనాడు యుద్ధనిపుణులగు వీరులందరు యుద్దమునకు కావలసిన ఏర్పట్లనన్నిటినీ సంసిద్ధము చేసుకొని బయలుదేరెదరుగాక! (11)దైత్యుల యొక్క, శూరలగు దానవులయొక్క, మరియు బలవంతులగు కంకులయొక్క ఎనభై ఆరుపటాలములు సైన్యము ఆయుధములను సిద్ధముచేసుకొని నిర్భయముగా వెంటనే బయలుదేరవలెను (12). కోటి సైన్యముతో సమమగు పరాక్రమముగల అసురుల సేనలు ఏబది గలవు. దేవపక్షపాతియగు శంభునితో యుద్దము కొరకై ఆ సేనలు బయలుదేరును గాక! (13) ధౌమ్రుల వంద సేనలు నా ఆజ్ఞచే సన్నద్ధులై శంభునితో యుద్దము కొరకు వెంటనే బయలుదేరవలెను (14). కాలకేయులు, మౌర్యులు, మరియు కాలకులు నా ఆజ్ఞచే సన్నద్ధులై రుద్రునితో యుద్ధము కొరకు ��యలుదేరెదరు గాక! (15).

సనత్కుమారుడిట్లు పలికెను - అసురులకు, దానవులకు ప్రభువు, మహాబలశాలియగు శంఖచూడుడు ఇట్లు ఆజ్ఞాపించి వేలాది పటాలముల మహాసైన్యముతో చుట్టు వారబడిన వాడై బయలు దేరెను (16). ఆతని సేనాపతి యుద్ధకళలో నిపుణుడు, మహాదథి, మహావీరుడు, యుద్ధములో రథికులలో శ్రేష్ఠుడు (17). మూడు లక్షల అక్షౌహిణీల సేనతో గూడియున్న ఆ సేనాపతి మంగళకరమగు పూజాదులను చేసి శిబిరము బయటకు వచ్చెను. యుద్ధములో శత్రు వీరులకాతడు భయమును గొల్పు చుండెను (18).ఆతడు శ్రేష్ఠమగు రత్నములతో అద్భుతముగా నిర్మింపబడిన విమానము నధిష్ఠించి, పెద్దలందరికీ నమస్కరించిన తరువాత, యుద్ధము కొరకు బయలుదేరెను (19).

Śaṅkhacūḍa said:—

O general, let the heroic warriors start for the war. Let them be ready for action; they have been trained well for the war.

Let the heroic Dānavas and Daityas, the armies of the powerful Kaṅkas of eighty-six divisions well-equipped in arms set out fearlessly.

Let the fifty families of Asuras, having the heroism and prowess of a crore set out to fight with Śiva, the partisan of the gods.

At my bidding, let the hundred armed families of Dhaumras speedily set out to fight with Śiva.

At my behest, let the Kālakeyas Mauryas, Dauhṛdas and the Kālakas set out ready for the fight with Śiva.

Sanatkumāra said:—

After ordering thus, the powerful lord of Asuras and the Emperor of the Dānavas set out surrounded by thousands of warriors and great armies.

1 7. His general was an expert in the science and technique of warfare. He was the best of charioteers a great hero and skilled in warfare.

He had three hundred thousand Akṣauhiṇī[2] armies. He performed the rites of auspicious beginning and came out of the camp. He was terrible to the watching heroes.

Mounting on an aerial chariot of exquisite build and inlaid with gems, and making obeisance to the elders and preceptors he set out for the battle.

Magdeburg und Atombombe auf Hiroshima

Was hat Magdeburg mit dem Abwurf der USA von zwei Atombomben auf Hiroshima vor 78 Jahren und Nagasaki zu tun? Gedenken und aktuelle Brisanz. August 1945 - USA werfen erste und einzige Atombomben ab Am 06. August 2023 wird Magdeburgs Oberbürgermeisterin Simone Borris einen Ginkgobaum aus Japan am Askanischen Platz einweihen. An der jährlichen Gedenkveranstaltung zur Erinnerung an die nukleare Zerstörung von Hiroshima und Nagasaki nimmt auch der Kulturattaché der japansichen Botschaft, Yasuhiro Kitaura, teil. Gingkobäume trieben als erste Pflanzen in der verstrahlten Umgebung der japanischen Städte wieder aus. Deutsche Städte blieben von einem Atombombenabwurf der USA verschont, weil eine einsatzfähige Atombombe erst nach der bedingungslosen deutschen Kapitulation in der Nacht vom 08. zum 09. Mai 1945 in Berlin-Karlshorst verfügbar war. Doch auch die konventionellen anglo-amerikanischen Bombardements führten in vielen deutschen Städten zu zahlreichen Opfern und Zerstörungen. Der Luftangriff vom 16. Januar 1945 gilt als einer der verheerendsten Luftangriffe auf eine deutsche Stadt im Zweiten Weltkrieg. Magdeburg 1945, Royal Air Force Bomber Command, 1942-1945 An den Folgen der bei Atombombenabwürfen auf die japanischen Städte Hiroshima und Nagasaki leiden auch nach über 75 Jahren noch immer viele Überlebende (Hibakusha). Seit sieben Jahrzehnten leben sie mit körperlichen und seelischen Erkrankungen infolge der Strahlung. Im Jahr 1982 rief der damalige Bürgermeister von Hiroshima, Takeshi Araki, auf der zweiten UN-Sondersitzung zur Abrüstung im UN-Hauptquartier in New York dazu auf, dass Städte in der ganzen Welt nationale Grenzen überschreiten und sich in Solidarität zusammenschließen sollten, um gemeinsam auf die Abschaffung von Atomwaffen hinzuwirken. Der Initiative schlossen sich nach Hiroshima und Nagasaki inzwischen über 8 000 Städte und 166 Regionen weltweit im Rahmen einer "Weltkonferenz der Bürgermeister für Frieden durch städteübergreifende Solidarität" (heute: Mayors for Peace) an - darunter auch Magdeburg. Chris Nolans Film „Oppenheimer“ über die Entwicklung der Atombombe Am 11. Juli 2023 hatte Chris Nolans Film "Oppenheimer" in Paris seine Weltpremiere. Neun Tage später gelangte er in die deutschen, und am Tag darauf in die US-amerikanischen Kinos. J. Robert Oppenheimer gilt als "Vater der amerikanischen Atombombe", denn als wissenschaftlicher Leiter des Manhattan-Projekts trug er entscheidend zur Entwicklung der ersten Atombombe bei. Nach den Atombombenabwürfen auf Hiroshima und Nagasaki verurteilte er angesichts der verheerenden Folgen den weiteren Einsatz dieses Massenvernichtungsmittels. Er setzte sich für die internationale Kontrolle der Kernenergie und gegen ein nukleares Wettrüsten zwischen der Sowjetunion und den Vereinigten Staaten ein. Das brachte ihm währen der McCarthy-Ähra den Vorwurf eines Spions der Sowjetunion und Einschränkungen seiner wissenschaftlichen Tätigkeit ein. Die Waffe und die Henker Wie ein Messer ein nützliches, aber totes Werkzeug ist, so auch die Atombombe. Darauf verweist Scott Ritter in einem emotionalen Beitrag zu Nolans Film auf consortiumnews unter dem Titel "Die Klage des atomaren Henkers". Der Film zeichne die Strapazen der Wissenschaftler nach, die die Atombombe erfanden. Kaum würden jedoch die Positionen der nuklearen Henker beleuchtet - jener Männer, die diese Bomben in Kriegszeiten abwarfen oder werfen sollen. Die B-29 mit der Atombombe auf Hiroshima steuerte Oberstleutnant Paul Tibbet: "Für den Piloten und die Besatzung der Enola Gay gab es keine Gewissensbisse, weil sie so viele Menschen töteten. 'Ich wusste, dass wir das Richtige getan haben, denn als ich wusste, dass wir das tun würden, dachte ich: Ja, wir werden viele Menschen töten, aber bei Gott, wir werden viele Leben retten', erzählte Tibbets 2002 Studs Terkel." (Link wie im Original) Auch Major Charles Sweeney, der Pilot der B-29 "Bockscar", der am 9. August 1945 die zweite amerikanische Atombombe auf die Stadt Nagasaki abwarf, war von seiner Rolle überzeugt, bei der sofort 35.000 Japaner getötet wurden. "'Ich sah diese wunderschönen jungen Männer, die von einer bösen, bösen Militärmacht abgeschlachtet wurden', erinnerte sich Sweeney 1995. 'Es steht für mich außer Frage, dass Präsident Truman die richtige Entscheidung getroffen hat'". (Link wie im Original) Ritter resümiert: Während sich die Welt auf das Drama der Wissenschaftler konzentriert, die zwar die Waffe entwickelten jedoch ihren Einsatz gegen japanische Zivilisten ablehnten, schweigt sie über die Haltung der nuklearen Henker - also jener Männer, die die Bomben abwarfen und zeitlebens davon überzeugt blieben, das Richtige getan zu haben. Was Scott Ritter resümiert, können Sie selbst beispielsweise anhand der Dokumente auf nuclearmuseum.org nachvollziehen. Sein Schluss: "Es ist an der Zeit, sich dafür einzusetzen, und es gibt keinen besseren Zeitpunkt als den 6. August 2023 - den 78. Jahrestag des Atombombenabwurfs auf Hiroshima, an dem sich Gleichgesinnte vor den Vereinten Nationen versammeln werden, um einen Dialog über Abrüstung zu beginnen, der hoffentlich genug Resonanz findet, um sich auf die Wahlen 2024 auszuwirken." Chris Nolans Film war auch für William J. Kinsella, emeritierter Professor für Kommunikation an der North Carolina State University, Anlass für einen weiteren Beitrag auf consortiumnews. "Das Manhattan-Projekt brachte eine Dreifaltigkeit miteinander verbundener Hinterlassenschaften hervor. Es löste ein globales Wettrüsten aus, das das Überleben der Menschheit und des Planeten, wie wir ihn kennen, bedroht. Es führte auch zu weitreichenden Schäden für die öffentliche Gesundheit und die Umwelt durch die Produktion und Tests von Atomwaffen. Und es entstand eine Kultur der Regierungsgeheimnis mit beunruhigenden politischen Folgen." (Link wie im Original) Bereits die Forschung und Entwicklung der Atombomben im Rahmen des Manhatten-Projekts führte in den jeweiligen Standorten der USA zu dramatischen Folgen für Menschen und Umwelt. Beispielsweise wird in einer Studie, die sich noch in der wissenschaftliche Begutachtung befindet, nachgewiesen, dass die Folgen des Trinity-Atomtests zur Entwicklung der Nagasaki-Bombe 46 US-Bundesstaaten sowie Teile Kanadas und Mexikos erreichten. Auch Kinsella unterstreicht, wie zwiespältig für viele Wissenschaftler die Arbeit an der Entwicklung der Atombombe war. "Wie Nolans Film erzählt, hatten J. Robert Oppenheimer und viele andere Wissenschaftler des Manhattan-Projekts große Bedenken, dass ihre Arbeit beispiellose Gefahren mit sich bringen könnte. Wenn ich mir die Hinterlassenschaften des Trinity-Tests ansehe, frage ich mich, ob sich einer von ihnen das Ausmaß und die Tragweite dieser Ergebnisse vorgestellt hat." Auch die Nukleartests in den nachfolgenden Jahrzehnten sollten hinreichend genug sein, um zu erkennen, wohin ein Atomkrieg führen würde. Doch in jüngster Zeit mehren sich leider die Zweifel daran. Gerade in Verbindung mit dem Krieg in der Ukraine gibt es zunehmend Spekulationen und Forderungen, inwiefern der Einsatz von Atomwaffen droht oder vielleicht sogar zu einer Beendigung des Krieges führen könnte. William D. Hartung, Direktor des Programms für Rüstung und Sicherheit am Zentrum für Internationale Politik, verweist auf jüngste Forschungsergebnisse: "In einem Bericht von Ira Helfand und den Internationalen Ärzten für die Verhütung des Atomkriegs aus dem Jahr 2022 wird geschätzt, dass ein 'begrenzter' Atomkrieg zwischen Indien und Pakistan, bei dem etwa 3 Prozent der weltweit über 12.000 Atomsprengköpfe eingesetzt würden, 'Hunderte von Millionen, vielleicht sogar Milliarden' von uns töten würde. Ein ausgewachsener Atomkrieg zwischen den Vereinigten Staaten und Russland, so die Studie, könnte innerhalb von zwei Jahren bis zu 5 (ja, 5!) Und atomar bewaffnete U-Boote, Bomber und Raketen  werden in Kalifornien, Connecticut, Georgia, Louisiana, North Dakota, Montana, Virginia, Washington State und Wyoming hergestellt oder stationiert." (Link wie im Original) Diese Produzenten und ihre Lobbyisten setzen sich über alle Risiken hinweg, die mit der Entwicklung und dem Einsatz von Atomwaffen verbunden sind. Und sie setzen all ihre Macht ein, um auch künftig kräftig Geld zu verdienen, das aus den Taschen der Steuerzahler in die Säcke der Rüstungskonzerne umverteilt wird.
