Unexpected Field Trip pt 1

“And what have we learned today Mariella?” I asked as I followed behind the child in question.

“That being a responsible pet owner means taking responsibility when your puppy causes trouble.” She replied with a practiced tone that only betrayed a little bit of her pout at being in trouble herself.

“Very good,” I said, “and what does that mean for you going forward young lady?” She sighed dramatically like she’d been burdened with some sisyphean task, “It means I’m not allowed to let Rupert out of his kennel without you or Father ever again.”

I chuckled at her response,”it’s not ‘ever again’ Mariella.” I said, “it’s just until we’re confident that he’ll obey your commands, we wouldn’t want him running off again now would we?”

Another over dramatic sigh, “No.”

Ahead of us Rupert tugged at the chain being held by Mariella, clearly unhappy with the slow and steady pace we were keeping on our walk back to the castle. Rupert wasn’t the first Hellhound I’d ever seen though I was still a bit surprised at first to see one being kept as a house pet. Far larger than the average dog or wolf, black sinewy skin, boney spikes protruding from his back, and a bone plated head completed the picture of a terrifying beast. The glowing red eyes and occasional panting breaths of flame from the hound would be enough to strike fear into the hearts of most men. On the other hand in the past week alone I’d seen Rupert startled at the sight of a mouse, get his head stuck in a gate, and completely pacified by belly rubs from the girls. So I personally didn’t find him all that scary.

Further up the trail I could see the road that traveled from the castle all the way into town. As we neared the end of the trail I could hear hooves approaching rapidly, along with what sounded like carriage wheels. “Mariella, wait here,” I said as I quickly walked forward. “Rupert, sit.” I commanded firmly. The hound replied with a groan but obediently planted himself in a seated position.

As I approached the road I moved off the trail, trying to stay somewhat hidden while still affording myself a view of the commotion. The roar of hooves grew louder and louder til the source of the noise finally arrived. A large group of riders on horseback raced down the road, carefully surrounding a large carriage. All of them adorned with the heraldry of the crown. Kingsguard, an entire squadron of them racing away from the castle. “This can’t be a good thing,” I mumbled to myself as I took off back down the trail to find Mariella.

“What’s happening Andrea?” Mariella asked, concern evident in her voice.

“I don’t know darling,” I said as I ran up to her. “But we need to get back to the castle now.” I pulled the chain from her hands and scooped the girl up into my arms before turning and taking off for the castle in a full sprint. “Rupert, come.” I shouted as I ran back past him. The hound kicked up dirt and leaves as we both tore down the trail. I thanked the gods that I’d had the good sense to change into trousers before we went out to track down the dog. Looking back on it I don’t know if I could have made the run in a dress. As we rounded a bend in the road the castle came into view. My lungs and legs were burning at this point, the last few months of minding children and teaching lessons had caused a lapse in my fitness that I vowed then and there to never let happen again.

Passing through the gates I saw the castle doors wide open and another Kingsguard carriage waiting out front. I briefly slowed to a stop to set Mariella down again before I continued. “Mariella, dear wait here,” I shouted over my shoulder. “Rupert, protect the child.”

My second wind hit right as I crested the top of the stairs which was mercifully wonderful timing. I stopped and quickly took stock of the situation, the entryway had been torn asunder. There were impact marks all around the walls, furniture destroyed, several fallen knights, tapestries burnt or burning, and on the ground in the middle of the room the gravely injured Dr Braithe with two armored Kingsguard approaching him as he backed away weakly. He had two stakes protruding from his chest and what looked like several other wounds as well.

I swallowed my thundering heart down and grit my teeth as I charged the two knights with their backs turned to me. I quickly grabbed a spear off one of the fallen knights and readied my attack. 

I don’t like killing people if at all possible, it’s messy and complicated. But years ago I swore an oath to protect the innocent from those who would do evil. And right this moment ‘innocent’ was a wounded father of three backing away from two fully armed men. 

I so very much dislike bullies.

The noise of my boots alerted them to my presence and they both tried to turn to face me. I however had the element of surprise, momentum, and had already closed a considerable distance between myself and them. The first one to round on me aimed his unusual looking weapon, I knocked it away with the haft of my spear, back towards the other knight. A small explosion rang out and a spray of blood from the second knight as whatever weapon the first knight was carrying discharged directly into the knee of his compatriot. There was a scream of pain from one and a panicked look upon the face of them both. Taking advantage of the momentary chaos I spun my spear knocking the weapon fully from his grasp and giving myself an opening to drive the tip of the spear down into the gap above his breastplate. Shoving his body away I drew his shortsword from his belt and rounded on his friend. Pointing the blade at the other knight I glared at him with righteous fury.

“Wh-who are you??” he asked, desperation in his panting breaths.

“I’m the Governess,” I stated, before driving the sword through his visor.

A guide to my OCs!

hey guys, figured i’d make this post because i have a shit ton of OCs that i post a lot of and i haven’t really explained most of them. they’re all part of different stories/universes, so i’ll be listing them based off of that.

Rex Sucks at Bass

Rex Sucks at Bass, or RSAB, is my webcomic. as of making this post, i’ve posted the entire first chapter! i’ve been planning this comic since late 2021 and i’m holding myself accountable to finish it no matter what. it’s a supernatural/coming of age story that takes place in 2009 about young adult named Rex who has to deal with relationship issues, worries about his future, sexuality crises, and of course, the impending apocalypse. also all the characters are anthro animals but that’s mostly because they’re easier to draw than people. some prominent characters from RSAB are Rex Xavier, Frederick Zhansky, Henri Bal, Sylvia Rose, Alex “Cowboy” Lorenzo, Lola Ramon, Scott “Spott” Simmons, and Marvin Xavier.

We’re Just Young

We’re Just Young is a fake sitcom about teenagers making bad decisions and friendship. it has a bunch of storylines i’ve planned out, but i mostly just draw the characters out of context. its main character is Gilbert Quarters, who is a gay bass player just like every single other character i’ve ever created. its main story takes place in 1997-98, during the characters senior year of high school. there’s also a “spin-off” to We’re Just Young, which follows Gilbert and a few others in college as they form a band called The Halloween Goats and gain some mainstream success as both musicians and ghost hunters. some prominent characters in We’re Just Young are Gilbert Quarters, Gerry Dawson, Marzy Lee, and Jackson Jefferson. some more prominent characters in the spin-off are Raymond Emerson, Wallace Waxman, Leo Hall, Jimmy Nickel, and Sebastian Ingalz.

Untitled Space Story

when i was 13 i read The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy and thought “I need to write my own sci-fi story” and then this past summer i got really into Star Wars and ELO and decided to revamp the whole thing. Untitled Space Story follows the adventures of a small crew assembled by infamous space pilot Sonya Blasmo, who is essentially the butch lesbian version of a cross between Zaphod Beeblebrox and Han Solo. she was “retired” because she accidentally turned her wife into a robot but nobody knows that! all they know is that she’s taking to the skies again! the other characters in Untitled Space Story are Alexis “AL3X15” Goldberg, Mindinoma Lycentine, Mariella Young, Sheldon Spinelli, and Casper “Capers” McFarlin.

Max Dallas is Not a Lesbian

a really shitty, simple love triangle story about lesbians at some sort of shitty boarding school in the mid-2000s. the only three characters are Maxine “Max” Dallas, Phoebe Jean Weathers, and Francesca “Frankie” Knight. i created this one like a week ago.

Friends of Daisy Harrisson

Friends of Daisy Harrisson is a musical i wrote, and i don’t draw the characters too often, but i figured i’d still put it on this list. it’s got a really vague story, essentially Daisy goes missing and her wife (Freyja Windsnap), ex-husband (Jim Hartley), and childhood best friend (Barneston Williams) are all brought together through her disappearance.

Black Clover: Sword of the Wizard King - movie reaction

Don’t normally do these for movies but WHATEVER. I’m too happy to care right now! It took me like..three & a half hours to get through the entire movie because I kept replayed scenes over and over again. I was just so amazed at how beautiful it all was and I was beyond emotional to see & hear everyone.

Y’all wouldn’t believe how much I’m shaking. I couldn’t stay up late waiting for the movie to drop because I was so exhausted but NOW.. I’m up! I’m awake at seven in the morning (though this is probably gonna post much later) on a day off (yes I took off just for this) and it’s finally happening!

Julius’ time magic is breaking apart? Dunno why exactly but it certainly can’t be a good thing.

So the sneak peak they showed on twitter yesterday was of a flashback of ten years ago. I figured it had to be something like that since Fuegoleon, Yami, and Julius looked so young, but then ya got Nozel who seems the same as ever! Still handsome though, of course.

And is that a younger Theresa with Fuegoleon too? Back when she was an active magic knight?

It’s already in dub? Alright, good. I prefer that honestly, since that’s how I first watched BC, but I’ll pop up the subs on screen as well just in case there’s any slight differences.

Crazy how Conrad’s key/door magic, whichever it is, negated everyone else’s that was holding him down with little effort.

Conrad and the other three Wizard Kings are already here..? I guess we’re not gonna see any part of the tournament. Shame, I was kinda excited for the idea.

It’s gonna bother me that I won’t know the other WK’s voice actors til the credits because I don’t recognize any at the moment, but at least we learn that Jester has barrier magic.

Damn, so Conrad’s seal weakened when Patri killed Julius? Eh, makes sense.

Legion magic from Princia (whom I’m also fond of her voice) summons up countless warriors.. nice.

Good to see the Bulls joining the fight, but where the hell are the captains? Shouldn’t they be fine with their large supply of mana? Unless they were helping the crowd evacuate. That’s probably the reason.

I was about the question the backstory between Kaiser and Conrad since they seemed familiar with each other, but then remembered Kaiser was there in the beginning flashback. Silly me.

Asta and Finral tasked to go fetch something to help against Conrad and naturally Noelle slides right into the portal with them.

A sword that can store up magic power and can possible destroy a whole country when it releases it? No wonder Julius tried to get rid of it.

Eeehehe, Nozel and Fuegoleon and their dramatic entrances! I love these stylish men.

Yami c’mon, must you always poke fun at my boy? At least Julius found it funny. Nozel, not so much.

I know Julius said Nero was assisting at Branch Zero but I did not expect the lab coat.

“Key magic. It grants him the ability to create keys that can open or close rifts out of thin air. The magic space behind these doors is able to absorb whatever Conrad wishes. Tools, grimoires.. magic itself.” And he can steal other people’s magic with that too hm? Thank you for the info Nero.

Okay, well damn, Conrad managed to beat them all here and knock out Sally.

Ah geez Finral, always getting hurt. I hope he doesn’t stay knocked out for long.

Shit, I had a feeling he stole some of Marx’s magic to learn all about them.

YEAH NOPE! Despite seeing this scene before in trailers I’m STILL NOT OKAY seeing Nozel knocked out in a pool of blood!! Aaaahhh!!!

I love how upset/angry she gets on Nozel’s behalf and I’m in awe with how they animated her water in this movie!

Damn it, Conrad stole her magic so easily.. I really hope this doesn’t hinder her the entire movie. I really wanna see her go all out.

But that’s why Asta gets so pissed off? Yeaaah boy! Make Conrad pay!

Wait, hold up.. the fire and lighting magic attributesare common, but a magic that resembles poison? Did Conrad already steal the Bull’s magic too? That would explain those threads Conrad held Asta down with but I pushed aside the thought of it being Vanessa’s since it looked like it also had needles to it.. but who knows. Maybe I’m over thinking.

Sure they both want a world where people respect other but Conrad is just a little, sorta kinda, very much insane.

Oh! Asta broke one of the keys! Does that restore people’s magic maybe? Or just cancel out the attack?

Aw, even when completely worn out, one of Asta’s concerns is for Conrad to return Noelle’s magic.

Took a damn long while but we finally got a namedrop for Edward’s magic. Ice wedge. And the fact he can freeze magma with it is insane.

Why must captains always get stabbed?? Seems like Mereoleona is cauterizing her wound though so that’s good.. or she can just summon up a huge purgatory mana zone and crush the blade in her hand. That works too.

Oh so Princia is indeed crazy deep down as well. She and Mereoleona are quite the pair.

Oh but the ending song! It is beyond beautiful!!! Ah, and it’s by Treasure, no wonder!

This little ending scene with Asta and Yuno is exactly what we needed, to see them start another fight since their encounter in the colosseum got interrupted.

Aaahh, okay.. I really enjoyed that. I wish we got to see the Black Bulls be their chaotic selves a little more, but it definitely filled my heart with many happy feelings to see them and everyone else again. I say that as if it’s been so long when in reality I only caught up with the series last year. It’s crazy to think that I got interested in this series because of the first movie trailer and here I am, finally getting to watch it. But I really hope the anime returns someday too, especially with this kind of quality! It’s real ambitious to release episodes weekly instead of seasonally and I didn’t mind the animation style at all when I binged it, but if it returns with even a fraction of this quality, it’ll be amazing. I’ll love this series regardless, of course. It was a lovely experience and I can definitely see myself watching this several times over.

Okay, I think I will make this post for all of my stories and what they will all have.

Chapter 15 of Bring The Heat will go in depth of Seigen's past as Theodore and Kiku learn about it and they all talk to him about it, as at the end Flame finally gets his real height with Varis and his dad begin to plan out their Tower of Hanoi.

Chapter 16 won't have a duel as well, but a lot of story happens. Flame tells everything that he now knows, Flame thinking about making a New Skill and talking about a Tuner, Genome, Faust and Baira all defeat Kitamura's robots and Gore has a different reason why he duels the Knights of Hanoi.

Chapter 35 of GX: Rewrite will first start off with Alexis and Skye moving into that mini Mansion of Chazz, then have some of the crew talk to Yusho on why he is looking at Odd-Eyes Dragon and that someone stole it from his son, and then Aster vs Zane. At the end there will be the Line for Shmaden Shmuki.

Chapter 36 will have Aster vs Jaden with Destiny and Vision Heroes appear with even the planet monsters making an appearance, as then we go in about Aster's past.

Chapter 3 of Star Magic Yuno where we see some training for both Yuno and Asta, with him doing some push ups and trying to fly while Asta swinging his Sword where they Meet Fanzell Krueger as then both of them talk about the Diamond Kingdom, about 2 Magic Attributes and they learn how to use a sword and how to create one as some Canon stuff happens for Fanzell with Mariella.

Chapter 4 will have Yuno and Asta going to the Capital for the Magic Knight Selection Exam as they join the Golden Dawn and the Black Bulls respectfully.

1999 Jerusalem - Number 18 - Mariella Nava - "Così è la vita"

Another diversion into the Festival di Sanremo to meet one the most prolific Italian singer/songwriters to have competed. And she competed in Sanremo eight times. Mariella Nava first entered Sanremo in 1987 with her last appearance being in 2005.

Così è la vita (That's Life) is her most successful song. It finished third and gave Mariella a share of the award for best music for this self-written entry. It's a rush through life's pros and cons, the brambles and the berries of it as she sings. The orchestra carry her aboard at a fast cruising pace, as she swoops between the highs and the lows, the majors and and the minors.

It all turns out to be worth it according to Mariella.

She has lived a blessed life in the music industry, regularly releasing not only her own singles (at least 40) and albums (15) from the late 1980s and she's still going. She writes for others and has won numerous awares. She sings music in TV commercials, and she collaborates extensively across the Italian music world with a work ethic that seems unmatched. To top it all, she is now a Knight of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic. Mariella is Italian music royalty.

It seems only right to remember her on the occasion of one of her triumphs.

                   Why you should get into Black Clover.

I know some people are undecided on whether or not they should give Black Clover a try, so I came up with a list of reasons why they might like the series, and why I think it’s worth the time. If you have any to add, feel free to!

1. Asta is an amazing protagonist. He was born without magic in a world where everyone had it to the point that the only means of transportation are magic-based (spatial magic, brooms that you have to feed your mana to etc), and as an orphan in one of Clover’s outskirt villages to boot. Yet Asta worked hard every day anyway, and through his own efforts became the 2nd physically strongest character after Yami. Because of this, he got a Grimoire from which (so far) three swords can emerge, and which allowed him into the Magic Knights. Asta’s main sword cannot be held by anyone else both because of its massive weight (which Asta can easily endure because of his physical training), and because the sword sucks the person’s mana out of them (which doesn’t affect Asta since he has no mana).

Despite always seeming cheerful and headstrong though, Asta actually suffers from deep-seated insecurities and depression. Being the only person without magic in the world, he was subjected to ridicule, discrimination and comparisons ever since he was a young child; and in the beginning of the story he almost had his breaking point, had it not been for Yuno’s words helping him get back up, which is when he swore to never come close to giving up again, as well as made sure that his personal issues wouldn’t interfere with his self-image and relationships.

Asta also tries to understand his enemies, where they come from and what drove them to act that way, as well as tries to help them. He doesn’t like going straight into the fighting, and would much rather settle it verbally, since that wouldn’t result in any casualties. He values life, and doesn’t want to see others throw theirs away for something that could be easily resolved with words; so every time one of his enemies dies of their own volition, Asta is shaken by their actions. He also has respect for most of his enemies, and was even seen picking flowers and putting them at the enemy’s grave while being saddened by their death, even though he had no obligation to.

However, Asta does want to hold bad people accountable for their actions instead of symphatizing with their backstory right off the bat. He will understand their motivations, but if they’ve already done the evil deed, they’ll have to deal with the consequences and make sure they’ll never do anything like it again. Like I hinted above, by “consequences” I don’t mean death. Asta never stands for the death sentence, and instead tells his enemies that they’ll have to spend their lives making up to the people they’ve hurt, both by serving time in prison, and by apologizing and outright helping others. After they atone for their sins, Asta is also wholeheartedly fine with becoming friends with them and helping them be better.

Asta is a truly inspiring and refreshing character, and has come to be one of my favorite characters of all time, even though I don’t usually fall for the protagonists. He’s humane, kind and has a certain charm that drags you in; and he’s per overall a feel-good character who motivates you to be your best self.

2. Black Clover has the best fleshed out female characters in all of Shounen so far, and they’re not sexualized. It was made obvious in the latest popularity poll, where we had 5 women and 5 men in the top 10. The only issue I’ve seen from the fandom regarding Black Clover’s female characters is that “they all have a crush on someone”, but that’s wrong. Black Clover has some great female characters that don’t have anything to do with crushes and romance, and the most striking example is Mereoleona. Other than her, we also have Theresa, Puli, Dorothy, Fragil, Nebra, Grey, Mariella, Kahono, Charla, Elf Fana and the Witch Queen.

Noelle may have a crush on Asta, but it’s not her defining trait. She has her own personal issues that stem from her backstory, and she works through them as the story progresses. She gets plenty of character development, and a lot of screentime. The anime tends to exaggerate her crush on Asta for the giggles, but the manga handles it pretty well. Mimosa, Charlotte and Charmy are all strong women whose crushes only come in second place to their actual parts in the story. Their crushes aren’t there solely for the trope either, since they serve as one of the girls’ motivations to get stronger.

To top it off, the women fight on equal grounds with the men, and some of them are even stronger than the best male fighters in the series. Mereoleona for one, is done so well that even the men watching the show had to admit she’s probably stronger than Yami, who is one of the strongest people in the entire series, Asta’s mentor and one of the fandom’s favorites.

As for the sexualization, there have been three instances in over 200 chapters that I can think of, one of which was in the anime and I am fairly sure Tabata didn’t even want to add them in (I’ve read a post once that said Shounen Jump probably has an agenda of a minimum amount of fanservice they push onto all their authors, and it’d make sense if it's true).

3. Yuno is different from the typical Shounen rival in a refreshing way, the rivalries shown in Black Clover are generally healthy and the show makes a point of showing you’re always stronger when you’re supported by and working alongside your friends. Yuno doesn’t “turn evil” & isn’t on bad terms with Asta; instead, he’s supportive and genuinely wishes for Asta to thrive and become his best self. Their rivalry is based on mutual respect, friendship and trust, and they’ve known and lived with each other since their early childhood.

While Yuno does encompass the “gifted kid” trope, he never once thought he was better than Asta, and instead of gloating about his magic, he continued to work hard magic-wise and physically (which many wizards tend not to, especially the gifted ones). He holds similar values as Asta, and wishes to become the Wizard King to make the country more accepting, equal and overall a better place. Because of this, the end of Yuno and Asta’s rivalry could go either way, since both of them deserve the title of Wizard King, and there’s no way to tell which one of them will become the Wizard King for sure, even though Asta is considered the main protagonist (I sure hope Asta will, though).

Other important rivalries are Luck and Magna’s, two misfits who prank but nonetheless still respect each other and who would go to amazing heights to make sure the other is alright; Asta, Yuno and Leopold’s, which helped Leopold grow; and Nozel and Fuegoleon’s, who have a slightly more tense rivalry, but who have competed since their childhood and who care for each other despite some of their moments of animosity.

The Black Bulls are a prime example of the found family trope, and their relationships with each other played major parts in each of their character stories.

4. Black Clover deals with several issues we also face. One of the main themes of the show is classism, and the way the poor and the disabled struggle in the corrupt system made by the rich and abled. Despite being orphans from the country’s outskirts (meaning one of the poorest places with the least amount of magic in the entire kingdom) Asta and Yuno’s goal is to attain the title of Wizard King, who is the strongest and most beloved wizard in the entire kingdom. To do so, they have to gain the citizens’ support and approval, and tear down the walls that oppress the poor and uplift the rich; but because of several centuries of discrimination, most royalty and nobles believe they are superior to the peasants, and that’s painstakingly clear from the moment Asta and Yuno leave their village and head for the more noble-populated cities.

Family problems and abuse are present in a good chunk of the Black Bulls’ stories, but the blame is never put on the victims. Instead, each of them gets their own arc in which they deal with their trauma, and it’s all handled well. Their issues don’t magically stop in their respective arcs either, but rather that’s the starting point of the change.

There are also several instances thorough the show that deal with suicide (mostly from the enemy’s side), as well as Asta’s great distaste of it and attempts to stop his enemies from killing themselves for their cause. Asta’s speeches on this topic are always positive and motivational, and I like reading them since they make me feel better, too.

Another shared issue is the racism, which also delves further into genocide. I won’t say too much as to not spoil it for those of you who will read/watch Black Clover, but this theme is related to the humans and the elves.

5. On that note, there are several races in the Black Clover universe that we know of so far. They are the humans, who the series is mainly focused on; the elves, who play a very big part of the show’s first saga; the devils and the dwarves. It’s likely that we’ll also get introduced to more races as the story goes on, and so far all of them have been done nicely.

6. The art style of the manga is stunning and the anime is also getting good. Per overall, I’d say the manga has the better aesthetics, but the anime does come in clutch with some of the fights (a couple of them were also extended in the anime, which was great; and Black Clover is known for its use of different animation styles in fights), while the music also helps add a certain feeling to the scenes that didn’t hit so hard in the manga. The Black Clover anime’s openings and endings are by far one of the best in all of anime. Even if you don’t plan to watch the show, you should definitely watch those. Currently we have 8 ops & eds, and they’re all bops. They’re one of the many reasons why Black Clover has become famous, anime-wise. 

Also, since I’ve seen a lot of complaints about Asta’s voice in the earlier episodes, it does get much better. The VA was new so his voice acting wasn’t too good, but it’s really come a long way since and it now fits Asta’s character perfectly. You should give it at least ten episodes before you make an opinion on whether to continue or drop the anime version (although I’d say it gets really good after thirty).

7. The series lets you choose what kind of pace you want. If you’re into faster paces, then the manga’s the perfect fit for you. Some people complained that the story moves too fast in the manga, but I personally like it. If you’re into slower paces, you can try checking out the anime. Since Black Clover’s an ongoing anime rather than one split into seasons, Studio Pierrot had to try and stall for time so the anime wouldn’t close in on the manga too soon; meaning the original content got stretched over a couple episodes, but nothing too bad.

8. Black Clover doesn’t have many fillers. People complain that it does, but it doesn’t. As of right now (ep. 96), there have been 5 purely filler episodes, out of which some were recap episodes. Other episodes have had some filler mixed into them, but it’s not obvious and it does add well to the story. We also got Yuno’s first mission (ep. 13) and the Light Novels animated (ep. 55-56 & 85-86), and those are to be considered canon.

9. The mystery of Asta and Yuno’s backstory pre-canon. The series takes a different approach with the protagonists’ backstory, and instead of telling us everything outright, it only shows Asta and Yuno as babies, left at the door of a church in Hage village at around the same time, 15 years prior to the story. At the time, they only had their names written on their clothes, and Yuno also had a necklace. Right now, we still don’t know who their parents are, what were the circumstances of their birth, if they’re blood related or not, and how come they were both left in the exact same spot, nor why there out of all places. I’m assuming this will be important later on in the series, since one of the arcs has already teased a possibility that was denied by the end of said arc.

10. The story mainly takes place in the Clover Kingdom, but there are three others that will become a focus later on. Diamond Kingdom, a hostile country that deals with black magic, human experimentation and wars; Heart Kingdom, a neutral country rich of mana that prefers to remain unseen and whose citizens use an unique style of magic; and Spade Kingdom, the most massive of the four, and also supposedly a militant country of winter. So far in the story we have learned several bits about the Diamond Kingdom, while the information on Heart and Spade is still very new and brief. This does for a nice change of settings. 

Also, since I’ve brought up the ‘unique style of magic’, Black Clover has a great power system, based on the elements and their subtypes, and even the most bland-sounding magic you never even thought of, can do wonders.

11. Black Clover is a funny show and it has various types of humor. Not only does it have comedic relief, like with Sekke, Yami and Gordon, but in the anime we also get Petit Clover, which is a short and usually amusing chibi-styled moment at the end of each episode. This was derived from the manga’s omakes in the same style and I’m guessing it had some success, since earlier in the year we also got an entire Petit Clover-styled series, named Mgyutto! Black Clover.

I’m a fan of both the manga and the anime, so I’d recommend reading and watching the series, but it’s fine no matter which you choose, and I hope I convinced at least some of you to get into this great show!

Worldbuilding 15 – Sketching out the dance of history

Hullo, Gentle Readers. Last time, we started stirring up trouble between our friendly kingdoms and got the idea for how some of our various non-human kingdoms came to be. This time, we’re going to fill out a literal timeline, the better to get a sense for when things happened in our campaign world.

I begin by determining which events happened so long ago that they’ve faded into legend. I lump those into an age I simply refer to as “Mythological”. This involves things like the Creation of the world, the birth of most of the races, and the ancient War with Chaos. I put this together as follows:

The Mythological Age

·         Creation of Aerne from Chaos 

·         Creation of Dragons, Dwarves, Elves, Men, Halflings, Gnomes, Goblinkind 

·         Twisting of Orcs, Minotaurs, and many other monsters by Chaos 

·         War between the Gods & Chaos 

·         Vordos, Palaiani, and Maraea sacrifice themselves to give Chaos a weakness 

·         Creation of the Far Realm 

·         Some Minotaurs take Maeve’s Bargain and forswear Chaos 

 Now, I need someone to invent the concept of recording years and when events happened. I ultimately decide that, since the dwarves have the great fallen civilizations of this campaign, they will do it. I quickly work up the abbreviations YBD (Years Before Dragonhome) and DR (Dwarven Reckoning). Dwarves count the founding of Dwarvenhome as Year 0, and they count forwards and backwards as appropriate.

 With this in mind, I look at what events probably happened before Dwarvenhome was a place. I like the idea that dragons had their own empires, but it was so long ago, and they’ve lost interest for so long that they don’t even bother to record it. Dwarves remember it, however, and they note it in their calendar.

 The coming of goblinoids is something dwarves would be sure to remember. And ancient human kingdoms rose and fell during this Ancient Age, including Nath-Hilum, Basaria, and the fallen empire of Angkar Thast, which caused the creation of tiefling-kind in this campaign.

 The Ancient Age

10,000 YBD – The Dragon Empires, Creation of the Dragonborn 

6,000 YBD – The Goblin Armies invade from the east 

5891 YBD – Having led his people to victory over the goblin forces, a human priest of Aman-Heith named Khetaru founds the nation of Nath-Hilum.  

2310 YBD – A series of warring city-states are united as the Caliphate of Basaria 

506 YBD – The Blessing of Ardan & Mariella (First Half-Elves) 

402 YBD  – The Weavers are revealed as worshippers of Lolth. War amongst the Elves begins. 

376 YBD  – The Weavers, now called the Drow, are driven into the Underdark. 

129 YBD – The Fall of Angkar Thast; the Death of He Who Was; the Ascension of Asmodeus; the Creation of the Tieflings; the Cataclysm of the Three Circles 

 I decided to put in something about the first half-elves, coming up with a couple of names, even though I haven’t fleshed this out at all. I can do that down the road a bit. I put the creation of the Drow in here as well, as well as the Cataclysm that caused the three big circles on my map. Although the dwarves recorded the year it happened (probably because it coincided with a lot of big events, including the death of a god), they don’t know, or don’t remember what caused the actual physical circles. It seems plain what event precipiatated it – the death of a god and the rise of Asmodeus.

 After this, it’s time to start recording events beginning with the founding of Dwarvenhome. We’ll call this the Dwarven Age.

 The Dwarven Age

0 DR – Founding of Dwarvenhome 

75 DR – Many elves, wary of dwarven expansionism, withdraw from the forests they had claimed and head west. Those remaining behind become known as wood elves and officially declare the Kingdom of Aureon.

78 DR – Founding of Eldarros. Its inhabitants become known as the High Elves. 

151 DR – Founding of the Esoteric Order of Illuminated Sages 

200 DR- Founding of the Keeps on the Borderlands, Creation of the first Warforged 

298 DR – Founding of the Way of the Four Elements 

366 DR – Founding of the Way of Shadow 

630 DR – Dwarven rule forges a number of city-states and tribes into the vassal kingdom of Valkenholm 

842 DR – Founding of the Bardic Colleges 

867 DR – Halflings gather near the borders of Aelwyn, forming into small communities called shires.

1060 DR – At the first Thanemoot, the tribes of the north unite under the banner of Ailenkorra, the White Cat. She proclaims their region to be Kalemarren (Land of the Great Elk). 

1229 DR – Fall of Dwarvenhome. The gnomes of Kivilamythi hide their city underground, becoming the Svirfneblin 

 Notice that we have more new elements here, including a new hero for the kingdom of Kalemarren. I will likely develop this out further in the future.

 Finally, we come to the present – the Modern Age. Most of these elements have already been discussed in other articles.

 The Modern Age 

1230 DR – Dwarves form the kingdom of Khalladast near their friendly nation of Aelwyn, close to the ruins of Dwarvenhome. They will earn the name “Hill Dwarves.” 

1239 DR – Dwarves make their way to a great series of southern mountains and found Khalladro, becoming the Mountain Dwarves. 

1278 DR – Founding of the Way of the Open Hand 

1285 DR – The gnomes present Queen Ehlissa of Aelwyn with the Marvelous Nightingale 

1291 DR – Agents from Valkenholm are caught in Aelwyn trying to steal the Marvelous Nightingale 

1292 DR – Aureon and Valkenholm both attack Aelwyn, starting the Nightingale War; the halflings near Aelwyn declare themselves as the Nine Shires

1293 DR – Gnomes slip into the forests, becoming a hidden people, founding the region of Rivileru. Other flee south, across the Dividing Sea. 

1306 DR – The wandering gnomes settle near the Mountain Dwarves, becoming the Rock Gnomes, founding their land of Rivilasti. 

1433 DR – Sir Calen Whiteshield becomes the first Margrave of Calengard, his title invested to him by the agreement of Aelwyn, Khalladast, and Rivileru. Calengard nominally pays tribute to Aelwyn, and many knights flock to Calen’s banners. 

1571 DR – First War between Aureon and the Dragonborn 

1630 DR – Birth of Ioun 

1631 DR – Birth of Vecna 

1666 DR – Death of Ioun, Vecna becomes a lich 

1822 DR – The beginning of the Red Death 

1829 DR – Red Death largely over 

1830 DR – Warforged begin to become sentient 

1835 DR – Now  

 And there we have it. Going forward, any new bits of history I create will use this timeline as their basis. It came together very organically from the various bits of history I created as I found I needed or wanted them.

Starting next time, we’re going from a giant overview to begin zeroing in on a single region – the one I would start a new campaign in – the Margraviate of Calengard. This is the site of the Keep on the Borderlands, which I would use as a jumping off point. After that, we’ll zoom in even closer, creating a home base and a first adventure for the players.
