Disgrace. The word had echoed in Lyssa's ears for almost two moons past now; that was the last time she had heard from her father, and it was in the letter she had burned. He had underlined it so heavily in dark ink that the quill had broken and the rest of the parchment was splattered with dark droplets, staining her fingers when she broke the wax. Disgrace. It made Lyssa feel nauseous whenever she thought of it, though nausea was at least better than tears. She had wept for days, until she was light-headed and sick with it - sick of herself, sick of her family, and most of all sick of him.

The manse was hers; he had told it true when he promised her that, but what was the use in having a home with no one but her inside it. He had not visited in half a year, and she was not so foolish as to believe it took that long to travel to Sunspear from the Red Dunes. No, he had tired of her, just as everyone had sworn he would, and she was the foolish girl left abandoned in a city that was not her own, among people who did not love her or her people, with no prospects, no reputation. Disgrace.

Lyssa had taken to wandering Sunspear when she felt the pressure headache building behind her eyes, warning her of another storm of grief. Her maid followed close behind, but in her months of living in Dorne she had swiftly learned that few highborn ladies were closely accompanied. No one turned a hair at seeing her alone, not even when she donned breeches like a man and wandered the collonades of the Tower of the Sun. She was nobly born and well appointed, and most knew her as the paramour of Lord Vaith...the former paramour, she reminded herself. And when people found that out, what would become of her?

She liked to watch the women train in the courtyard beneath the Spear Tower, though Lyssa herself had never touched a knife or sword. There was something so graceful about their movements as they moved through their drills; it calmed Lyssa's racing heart and brought her peace - and jealousy too. She wished she could be like them, the women born in Dorne, who cared so little what people thought, who bedded who they liked and did not mind the consequences. Her favourite to watch was Lady Nymeria Sand - the eldest daughter of Prince Oberyn, whose golden whip was as effective as any broadsword, and who was as beautiful as the statues of the Maiden in the Sept. Lyssa had never dared approach her, but she settled down on her favourite bench in the shelter of the lemon tree and shaded her eyes with a slender hand; then slumped, visibly disappointed to find Lady Nymeria was not already at her drills. Perhaps she had left Sunspear?

I already had a human female mesmer when I created my Gwen namesake, and quite a few alts, so I decided to make leveling her up more interesting and challenging through three self-inflicted rules:

I couldn't use any boosters of any kind—no damage boosters, regeneration, XP, banners, anything.

I couldn't use any food or utility items—only festival status could affect her.

I could only use racial utility skills—as a human, these are the prayers to the gods (I headcanon my Gwen as deeply devout). I had to amend this because there aren't enough non-elite prayers to fill out the bar, so I had one free utility skill with four prayers.

I'm now within a hair of 80, and it was honestly pretty fun. I didn't die nearly as much as I expected, mostly thanks to Balthazar (...eep), who answers human PCs' prayers with fiery hounds who can tank for you. I know he goes really wrong, but I'm still going to feel kind of bad about fighting him after he saved me so many times :(

The funnest prayer, though, is undoubtedly the prayer to Lyssa for sheer chaos value (random boom to you, random condition to foe, 1200-ft range). I definitely used it as a sort of hail Mary a few times when my health was going down fast, and Lyssa generally came through for me.

I do like that the Character Adventure Guide has made leveling really fast, but not so fast that you don't experience the lower-level game. My challenge mode slowed it down a bit further, so I got more of ~the experience, but not so much that I didn't have fun fighting the Shadow Behemoth through the power of prayer.

The winner of the Terra Championship is Krunk!

His victory is what led him to being Velo’s first champion, and it was so unexpected! I like to think he raced against Oxide on Terra, and won, much to Oxide’s embarrassment.
