I am as white as they come.
42% English, 21% Scottish, 12% Swedish and Danish etc etc
But my grandfather. And my aunt. They have the curliest hair that I know comes from Mali. I carry that 1% with me, but with them it shows. And my grandfather’s mother was raised on a reservation in Oklahoma. I don’t even know her name.
But…I want to. I wonder. About which ancestor left me that 1% of the same empire Mansa Musa was from. The fact that that’s all I know about the country. I want to know their name. Their story. What on earth happened. Why don’t we know you? I can track my family back to a sister-ship of the Mayflower, yet I don’t know where I got this 1%.
It isn’t my culture. I am not entitled to it. But sometimes I just…wonder. I’m just a little suburban white kid but this is so important to me. They are so important to me.
People joke about having “1% black so I can say the n word haha” but this family member…who are you, and how have you stayed in my blood yet I don’t even know your name?
