Kikyo was not a woman to fear many things, while alive she underwent a strict training to become a priestess, and therefore she learned to detach herself from emotions that could be considered detrimental to her duty (or at least suppress them). However, there was something that was always somehow haunting her mind: the fear of failure. Kikyo had a lot of lives depending on her, people who looked up to her for inspiration and guidance. The world needed her to be flawless in order to protect the jewel, failing wasn't an option, and this pressure forced her into building a cold exterior, she had to have complete faith in her own abilities, she had to believe she was the only one who could protect the jewel, because otherwise her entire existence would be questioned. She might not acknowledge it as fear, but in the end that's what it was, she was terrified of failing her duties. I also believe that deep down she was afraid of dying alone, on chapter 173 she says that she thought she was going to die alone when Naraku made that giant soul collector to steal her souls, but Inuyasha was there for her, and for that she was very happy. I think that was something that she was secretly afraid of, dying alone, forgotten, as if she never meant anything to anyone.

The best books I read in 2020
I read 167 books in 2020, which is a little more than one and a half times as many as I read in 2019. (I had a crisis of counting at one point when I read a string of novellas, but ultimately came down on the side of if I can check out the ebook from the library as a single volume, then it counts as a book for the purposes of my list.) Only ten of those are books I reread, which is a fairly low reread number/percentage for me. The large number of books I read this year made it extra difficult to narrow down a small number of the best ones, which is why this list is longer than in previous years. It is, in fact, long enough that I have put it behind a cut to spare your dash.
Top 11 fiction books/series I read for the first time in 2020
Bread Alone trilogy (Bread Alone, The Baker's Apprentice, and Baker's Blues) by Judith Ryan Hendricks - I so enjoyed this trilogy about bread baking and figuring out your life and building a home/community and love. I read it at the beginning of the pandemic, when everyone was baking bread, and it was one of those things I was sad to finish because I didn't want to leave the characters.
Never Have I Ever by Joshilyn Jackson - I have read a lot of suburban housewife with a secret books over the last couple of years. This was an excellent example of the genre with the good use of a thematic motif and a second secret reveal after you learn what you think is the biggest secret. Content notes: I had to skim a few chapters because of the large amount of weight and disordered eating content (which is relevant to the character), and there is sexual abuse of a young teenager by an adult as part of the story.
The City We Became by N.K. Jemisin - This was such an interesting concept and done so well. It was one of the most popular books my sci fi book club read this year, and the New Yorker in our group said it was her favorite New York book ever. The most disappointing part of this book is that it's the first book in a trilogy and the other books haven't been published yet. Content notes: eldritch horror and realistic racism.
The Sci-Regency Series (My Fair Captain, The Englor Affair, My Regelence Rake, Diplomatic Relations, and My Highland Laird) by J.L. Langley - The delightfully ludicrous premise of this series is that there is a gay Regency society in space, which makes for some really fun romances. I've loved this series for over a decade, and I was thrilled to reread the first three books before reading the two new books that came out this summer. I recommend reading the novels in order, as there is an overarching plot involving the Intergalactic Navy that is interesting and ongoing without overshadowing the romances. Content note: these are on the erotica end of the romance spectrum, which means they have very explicit sex scenes. I wrote a lot more about this series in a Yuletide promo post comment.
The Most Fun We Ever Had by Claire Lombardo - I was so sad to finish this book! I have read a lot of commercial/literary fiction about families in the past few years, and this might be my favorite. I found the characters really compelling and enjoyed seeing their differing perspectives. I didn't want to leave this family.
Throne of Glass series (Throne of Glass, Crown of Midnight, Heir of Fire, Queen of Shadows, Empire of Storms, Tower of Dawn, and Kingdom of Ash) by Sarah J. Maas - This YA fantasy series shouldn't work given its constant escalation, and yet, somehow it does. I greatly enjoyed it, and I cried more than once at the last book. This is a series where I recommend not reading anything about future books until you've read all the books before them so you can enjoy the continual reveals. These are very much genre novels, and if you don't like the genre, these books will not be for you. Content note: there is a lot of genre-typical violence.
The Great Believers by Rebecca Makkai - I admit that I was mildly skeptical about this book given that what I knew about it was that it was a story about the AIDS epidemic where one of the two timelines is about a woman trying to reconnect with her daughter, but I ended up loving it. The two alternating timelines fit together beautifully, and I thought it did a good job of not eliding the horror of the AIDS epidemic experienced by the gay community in favor of the straight woman's experience. I do remain skeptical of how many awards it won; while it was a genuinely excellent book, I also know that awards bodies love dead queer people.
We Set the Dark on Fire and We Unleash the Merciless Storm by Tehlor Kay Mejia - I loved this YA dystopianish (more cultural class divide than apocalypse or singular villain in control) duology about queer women falling in love while working toward revolution. The world building was good, the plot was good, and the romance was good.
Sisters of the Vast Black by Lina Rather - This novella about an order of nuns who travel through space in an organic slug-like spaceship was absolutely wonderful. It deals with issues of faith, purpose, central control, and doing what you can to make the world a better place.
Sorcery of Thorns by Margaret Rogerson - I loved this YA novel in a sort of Regency-ish setting about a girl who grew up in a library full of magic books and her dealings with some sorcerers, complete with a romance. Content note: attempted mental coercion and institutionalization.
The Wren Hunt and The Wickerlight by Mary Watson - This is a YA duology about rival druid groups in modern day Ireland. I found both books totally compelling with interesting druid politics and magic. It was also really interesting how well we get to see the worst of both sides of the rival druid groups in the two different books.
Top 5 books/series I read and then thought about a lot in 2020
The Twisted Ones by T. Kingfisher - A friend recommended the author to me. This particularly book is a supernatural horror novel I don't necessarily recommend. However, I have continued to think about elements of it since I read it. (Before you @ me about the author's other work, this was the third of her books I read and the other two were in the more beloved fantasy novel genre.)
The Calculating Stars by Mary Robinette Kowal - I actually didn't like this book that much. We read it for a book club, and it had an interesting concept that wasn't super well executed. However, I have thought about elements of it a lot since then, particularly in comparison to some of the other sci fi I encountered this year.
Gideon the Ninth and Harrow the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir - I don't know how much "I actively thought about these a lot" describes my actual experience of having read these, but given their popularity and the number of conversations I had about them, I can't omit them from this post entirely. I liked the first one once I figured out what kind of story it actually was, had absolutely no idea what was happening at any point in the second one, and discovered with both of them that I have a much more limited vocabulary than I thought, at least when it comes to death-related words. I am invested enough that I will read the third book when it comes out, but probably won't read any more of the author's work beyond that. If you want to know more about what I thought, I wrote a very spoilery post about them.
The Sixth World (Trail of Lightning and Storm of Locusts) by Rebecca Roanhorse - This is a pair of novels set in a post-apocalyptic world where there's a magically/divinely-erected wall around Dinétah (the Navajo lands). The worldbuilding and characters are so interesting, and it's a series where some of the details stuck with me and I would randomly think of them. I'm looking forward to reading one of her other books in a few months for my sci fi book club.
Wild Mercy: Living the Fierce and Tender Wisdom of the Women Mystics by Mirabai Starr - This was one of two books about women mystics I read and disliked this year, and the more disappointing of the two as I'd heard an interview with the author that I found interesting. I continued to think about this one a lot in an angry, "and another thing!" way, which did help me articulate more of the things I dislike about new age-ish framing of "feminine" wisdom/divinity/knowledge.
Top 3 non-fiction books I read in 2020
The Vagina Bible: The vulva and the vagina - separating the myth from the medicine by Dr. Jen Gunter - This is probably better as a reference work than as a straight read-through, but it was interesting enough to read straight through. The book is deeply rooted in science and facts, and she has a whole chapter on "Vaginas and Vulvas in Transition" specifically about anatomy for trans people.
Here All Along: Finding Meaning, Spirituality, and a Deeper Connection to Life - in Judaism (After Finally Choosing to Look There) by Sarah Hurwitz - This is a useful, contemporary introduction to Judaism from someone who shares a lot of my values. The first half is an introduction to Jewish thought, while the second half focuses more on spirituality and practice. The book is part general introduction and part spiritual memoir. I found it deeply inspirational and I added it to a wish list of books I want to own copies of (I read it as a library ebook) because I would like to both reread it in hardcopy where I can easily flip back and forth and use it as a resource for further study and reading.
You Can Draw in 30 Days by Mark Kistler - You may remember that I wrote more about this when I originally finished reading the book. I found it a gentle, funny, helpful book to teach you the basics of drawing.
The 2 authors I read the most in 2020
Jennifer Lynne Barnes - I read fifteen of her books in three weeks in January, when I was still working full time, and a sixteenth after it was published later in the year. Her books are fast-read YA novels that are deeply engaging and generally have some sort of mystery element to them which may or may not involve family secrets. She has a tendency to write variations of the same characters, which meant that I enjoyed mentally mapping the characters from various books onto characters from other books. Also, her werewolf trilogy does one of my favorite werewolf story things that you almost never see (but it doesn't happen until the end of the first book, so I won't spoil it by telling you what it is). Many of her books involve violence, so heed the summaries or email/message me if you want some content notes.
Laura Lippman - I read nineteen of her books this year, eighteen novels and a non-fiction essay collection. She's an excellent mystery writer with a distinctive voice. The time I read four of her books in four days, I found myself thinking in her style. Even if I hadn't otherwise enjoyed My Life As A Villainess, her essay collection, it would have been worth reading just for the kicker on "The Thirty-First Stocking." Content note: her novels frequently involve violence or its aftermath.

BELOW THE RUINS
_________________________________ Next part of @kruk-art‘s Awan Cormak’s fanfic I’m writing!
Awan takes on Psycopathor by himself! (Or tries to)
Enjoy. Also, spoilers!
__________________________________
“Shitshitshitshit” you go on as you dodge Psycopathor’s powered fist
“Stay still you little fucker! I promise It won’t hurt at all!” he says sending his full weight into another killer punch aimed at your skull.
You can’t play the dodging game with him forever, he’s also a telepath and he’s going to catch up on your game. You need to take the offensive.
Sidestepping to the side, you entangle your arm on his, turning, bending over and going for a throw.
The whole thing takes about a split second, but you feel like time itself stopped as you realize how impossibly heavy his powered armor is.
It’s no use.
You’re going to get crushed under him.
What were you even thinki…
But the endless hours your trainers spent teaching you this move pay off. His own momentum plays against him, turning him weightless. You’re re just the catalyst for his downfall.
The crowd goes silent as Psycopathor’s feet get off the ground, their jaws open as he balances over you and then they gasp as he falls flat on his back with a loud splat.
Is that it? Did you win?
The collective horror of the cultists as their champion lies motionless is deafening. You can’t help but raise your shields immediately as their gazes slowly move on from him to you. There’s no way you can take a whole crowd focusing on you without losing it.
And then you feel Psycopathor’s reaction. He noticed you doing it.
Crap. He now knows you’re a telepath too.
He slowly starts standing up, cackling.
“Well, that’s a very creative thing you just did Sidestep… But I wonder what are you going to do now that I know your secret”
“I’m never going down at the likes of you. Come at me as many times as you want” you threaten. “You’ll just, end up eating dirt again. You haven’t seen everything I can do”
“I haven’t huh? Well, why don’t we give everyone a show then” he says mockingly. “Metal boys, get him!”
“What.. no! Fight me one-on-one you coward!”
“The more I think about it, the more that seems like the stupid way to do it,” he says. Four guards wearing the familiar powered suits -whom he apparently calls metal boys- surround you.
You try.  You really do. Take one out, then another. The third almost gets but you manage to quickdraw and shoot him before he sees it coming. Then four more enter the fight, and you manage to hold them off for quite longer than you expect, but when one of them got hold of your arm, it’s over. All of them beat you to the ground, and Psycopathor simply steps forward sending a fist at your face, putting your lights out.
(...)
(...)
(...loud noise.)
“...know It’s over Elyise!” Psycopathor’s voice booms into your head as you open your eyes groggily.
It takes a few seconds to realize what’s going on. You can’t really move, something large is holding you in place, and on your feet.
If you have to believe your eyes at this time, it’d seem to be Psycopathor’s powered arm, holding you as a human shield in Elyise’s direction. She’s pointing your own energy gun at him and there’s a couple of guards on the ground around her, along with some other injured ones nearby. Some injured by you, but probably the others by her.
“Let go of the gun or I'll crush his skull here and now”
This is definitely not the highest point of your career as a hero. Sidekick, vigilante, hero, but this is your first as the hostage-boy. You’re treading into unfamiliar territory today.
Elyise reluctantly drops your gun. Well, that’s no good.
“Good. Bring her” Psycopathor commands the guards who seize her by both arms and drag her to the stage, as he does the same with you.
“Oh, you’re awake huh?” He says without looking. Of course, he can sense you’re awake. “Ditched Charge already? I knew you two wouldn’t last. Too much competition. I like your new girlfriend. She’s going to steal your spotlight at this rate though. Has some wicked powers too… but I’m more interested in her mother” he says amused. You struggle to test his grip and the response is overwhelming pressure on your ribs. “You and I are going to have some fun after the show’s over. Maybe I'll break some bones. Or all of them. I wonder if the Rangers would like videos of that. Being a cripple will be a  terrific new story-arc for your promos I bet.”
He makes you kneel in front of Mother, who’s sitting like a queen as her transformation goes over.
“Hero-Drug administered successfully… Atropos scanner reports increased Thanatos readings” one of her assistants said while manipulating a console.
“Lachesis device report is critical” the other one answered worriedly.
“Have faith my sisters, our precognitive prophets have foreseen that my thread won’t cut, today. Activate the Clotho intervention”
The machine buzzes noisily as tubes go into Mother’s back before lighting up in bright light, energy surging into her body. She too starts shinning in bright golden light.
“I can feel it!! I can feel the greatness… the ascension...” It’s not just in her head. You can see her body changing. She’s definitely gaining in size under her armor, which is concerning enough.
She sounds ecstatic, her objective complete. The two female assistants observe as in trance, completely absorbed in the process.
Some red lights begin flashing in their control… If there was any truth to Void’s words then this won’t take long to go down in flames.
“Control! I can control the boost!” she says extending her hands which start surging with electrical sparks. The crowd cheers and chants her name.
“Holy mother, master of our divine drugs, bring us the truth and…” one of the assistants goes on until he notices the screen she should have been looking at this whole time. “Wait!! Something’s wrong!! Critical Error! The system’s failing!” She screams
“What?!” Mother asks befuddled
“It’s not transferring any more energy from the subjects!” she goes.
“Impossible! Restart the system!”
“It’s not responding!”
The tubes go dark as the transfer ends. Mother begins convulsing uncontrollably on her chair as the golden aura dies out and her sparkling hands go dark. “No! The process isn’t complete… I can’t… I’m not complete!” She lets out before shrieking in pain, her body still changing.
“We have to repair the system right now!” the assistant to the left states standing up…
But that’s when the lights went out.
………………………………………………..
You stumble to your feet as narrowly avoiding being stepped on by terrified cultists running in the dark.
Activating the night-vision system, what’s going on becomes quite clear.
The rangers are here, fighting the guards along with the LAPD. Charge is commanding officers in clearing out PSycopathor’s guards to rescue the hostages. Steel and Anathema are giving  Psycopathor hell, while Elyise is making her way to Mother, who’s still screaming uncontrollably as her body continues to mutate under the hero-drugs without any aid from her device.
It’s not hard to find where you’re the most useful.
“You’re late,” you tell Charge as you help him unstrap one of the patients.
“I can still leave f you prefer” he grunts unstrapping the hostage from the slab.
You hurry the patient out, sending him to the officers with a strong mental boost to his self-preservation instincts. Hopefully, that’ll help.
“I think I’ll let it slide this time,” you say as the both of you move towards the next hostage.
“How kind of you,” he says hurrying to free the next one before looking at Elyise as she tries to talk to Mother. “Who is she?”
“New hero. Elyise, telekinetic”
“Another one?” he squints as he manages to open up the bindings and free the hostage’s arms.  “What’s her deal?”
“That one over the chair? She’s Mother Superior. Elyise came to stop her. She’s her actual daughter if you can believe that” you say as the both of you switch slabs again, the officers taking care of the freed woman.
“WHAT?!” he asks incredulously.
Mother roared with a distinctively inhuman new voice, breaking free of her device, her body has increased in size exponentially.
“Mother, please! You need to surrender, so they can help you!”
“HELP?! NOW YOU OFFER HELP??! THIS IS YOuR FAULT!!” she says taking a swipe at Elyise. She dodges, but Mother’s enlarged claws ripped part of the machinery to shreds. Hero drugs are acting fast, as he suit begins fusing with her flesh in a way you’ve never seen before “YOU BETRAaYED ME!!” she charges once more, but Elyise repels her with her powers. Mother manages to keep standing, slowly overcoming the kinetic wave and slowly advancing towards her daughter.
“You left me no choice!”
“YOU MADE ME INCOMPLETE! I NEeD TO COMPLeETE MY ASCENSION!!”
Mother tips of the tables containing the hero drugs, taking a syringe in each of her four hands.
“IT’S BEEN FOREeTOLD! I WiILL BE AN ANGEL! I CAN NOT DIE TODAY!”
“Mother no!!”
But she doesn’t listen, removing the central piece of her armor and injecting all four at once onto herself.
“What the heck is she doing?!” Charge asks.
“She’s lost it. She thinks hero drugs can’t kill her!.” you say as Mother leaps at her daughter. Elyise dodges her narrowly this time. Her claws break through the stage like butter. “No one can survive that much. I don’t think she’s got too long”
“She doesn’t seem to be weakening”
“It could take a while. Go help Elyise. I’ve got this” you tell him. His enhancements make him faster than you and far better at dealing with armored villains.
He nods, heading onwards with a static buzz, as you lead the police officers into freeing the remaining hostages before heading back into the fight.
Most of the cultists have escaped by the time you finish, and Psycopathor and his “Metal boys” seems to be cornered, while Charge, Elyise, and Mother are still going at it on the other end of the room,  Elyise still trying to reason with her between the punches and slashes. Charge seems to be trying to keep off the range of her claws while hitting her fast and dirty with electrical discharges which seem to be infuriating her even further.
“Give it up already,” Anathema says facing Psycopathor. His suit is sprinkled with extensive corroded areas were the acid got to him, his gaze going over all of you like a wounded beast, weakened but still dangerous. “It’s over, creep, I can do this all night.” Anathema goes
“Maybe you win this one rangers” he says pulling his left arm horizontally revealing a small panel on the wrist.
“Watch out! He’s going to…” you start as you can sense the thought in his mind before it happens.
Too late. He activates a short squence. “I’ll see you in hell rangers!!” he laughs
“What are yo…” Anathema can’t finish the sentence as explosions shake the ground beneath you.
You manage to stay on your feet, but that’s only because you saw this coming. Nobody else does, except Psycopathor and some of his men.
“Take the equipment! We flee right now!! This place’s going to be dust in minutes!”
As if answering to his words, the high ceiling starts cracking above you, pieces falling over, as the ground too, starts giving out.
“We have to get out of here!” you say pulling Anathema to his feet. He takes it, standing up with effort.
“Did that jerk just set us up the bomb?!” he says
“Out!” you usher, while helping others and heading to the exit. Steel is doing the same on the other side. Psycopathor and his people are taking Mother’s machinery and the hoard of hero-drugs to escape through some hidden exit.
“NO! YOU CAN’T TAKE MY RESeEARCH!!!” Mother says leaping at him like a feral animal, sticking her claws into his armor before he can react.
“I had high hopes for our partnership Mother” Psycopthor says while pulling her off him with both hands “But I’m afraid we’re going to have to re-evaluate things. Don’t call us, we’ll call you” he says finally dislodging the left claw as he tosses her with all his powered strength into the opposite wall. The old bricks give out, and the ceiling collapses, burying her in the rubble.
“NO!” Elyise cries out trying to get to her, but Steel drags her towards the exit with you.
Getting out is a nightmare, Steel and Charge have to team up to open way as the corridors keep collapsing in front of you, and Elyise even had to hold the ground together as you made the final stretch.
The collapsing building is producing aftershocks all trough Sunken Town. Luckily a few LAPD helicopters are taking everyone to safety. You end up sitting next to Charge who’s making calls trough his intercom as it takes off.
The view underneath is complete desolation, as three other buildings fall to pieces around the ruin of Mother’s lab.
His hand on your shoulder startles you. He looks a bit concerned.
“Are you ok?” he asks “I wish we could’ve gotten there sooner but we lost the signal. Good job on putting down the jammer device”
“Just did my job. And  I’m fine. Psycopathor only got one punch at me. Here” you say motioning to the left side of your forehead. “That’s nothing!”
“With that power-armor? We need to get you to a hospital… you could have  a concussion!”
“Like hell! No hospital” you grunt. “You’re the one who needs one,” you say pointing at a rather ugly slash on his left side.
“She got me a few times. Hard to dodge something with four arms. But unlike you, I AM going to a hospital as soon as I get off this, like a normal person.” he grins.
“Normal is overrated” you grumble.
He offers you a grin. “I know, that’s why I hang out with you”
“Because I’m not normal?”
“Because you’re really, really awesome man!” he grins at you.
Not being able to read his mind always ends up like this. You sort of expected another jab at you so the compliment and the contact take you off-guard. You look away to hide the sudden blush and not make a fool of yourself.
“That was actually a terrific job Sidestep. I mean it” he goes on, making it worse.
“You have a weird definition of a terrific job,” you say pointing down at all the damage.
“Well, that’s just another regular day in Sunken Town. Those things would have given away in time” He shrugs  “What matters is we’ve got all the hostages. And nobody died. Except mother but she kind of brought it on herself”
“No shit she did,” you say smiling weakly. “Really? Nobody died in that?”
“There’s a few injured but nope… with those madmen working together it’s a  miracle everyone came out in one piece. Many of the cultists are in custody, some escaped into the rest of Sunken Town but all in all, we’ve got enough of them. And we got a lot of Psycopathor’s Metal boys too. Did you see THe Void tough?”
“Was here earlier, but he’s long gone” you sigh.
“We’ll get him next time,” he reassures you. “I promise” Why is he being so nice?!
“Of course we’ll get him!” you struggle for him to hear you under the sound of the rotor blades.
“How did you even find this place?” he asks
“I didn’t. She did” you say pointing at Elyise on the other side of the seating. She seems out of it. “She’s working with REaper”
“Oh. I heard he was helping a new hero out. She really knows how to fight.”
“Yeah, she’s pretty awesome too”. Did you just acknowledge he said that earlier?
“So Uhm...  she just lost her mother?”
“I think she’s been dreading this moment half her life-time. She said Mother experimented on her. She was the one who made her boosted. Elyise’s been hunting her for a very long time now.”
“Woah… that’s really fucked up!”
“I know!”
“I think I should talk to her”
“You should. I’m not even sure what to say” You never knew much about having a mother after all. “I bet she could use some words after this mess,” You say taking your gaze off the rubble below and onto Los Diablos’ familiar skyline. At least that’ll get him off your back. Your stomach gets weird when he is nice to you and you don’t want a weird stomach onboard a helicopter.

How do you follow up a smash hit album that, in your native country alone, sold over a quarter of a million copies, spent two weeks at Number 1 (and didn’t budge from the Top 40 for over a year), spawned both a Number 1 (which itself sold just shy of a million copies) and a Number 2 single, and earned you four Brit Award nominations? With a bit of time and patience, it seems – or at least that’s how Years & Years have done it. The London-based, British-Australian trio’s second studio album ‘Palo Santo’, the follow up to 2015’s banger-filled, world-beating debut ‘Communion’, which put singer Olly Alexander and multi-instrumentalists Emre Türkmen and Mikey Goldsworthy on the proverbial map, has just been unleashed onto the world and currently boasts a handsome score of 82 on Metacritic, a 14-point increase on their previous offering. They may have, by their own admission, suffered from a little Difficult Second Album Syndrome, but the numbers don’t lie – their patience in crafting this record has absolutely paid off.
In reality, it’s not been an inordinately long wait for Years & Years fans, just three years, almost to the day – shorter than we were made to wait for recent sophomore offerings from Lorde, HAIM, Sam Smith and London Grammar. We meet for our interview on the third anniversary of the release of ‘Communion’,four days after ‘Palo Santo’ dropped, on the afternoon of the London instalment of the brief run of gigs across Europe and North America that are serving as the album’s launch parties. Despite being in the middle of a mad release week, packed with media appearances and album promotion, there’s little sign of fatigue from the band. The mayhem of the day hasn’t yet gotten to Emre, who has the clarity of mind to quickly fix an issue with our Polaroid camera, nor Olly, who is supposedly on vocal rest ahead of the performance, but voluntarily sings lines of ‘Sanctify’ as we snap our pictures. With his hair freshly re-dyed red, he’s in a chipper mood. “We can’t wait to be inside you,” he offers as his message to fans in New Zealand, before rethinking his contribution: “Bit weird.” Similarly cheeky humour comes from the stage late in that night's set: “I’m really wet,” he tells the adoring crowd, adding, “Sign of a good night, if you ask me.” There’s no shortage of banter on this promo circus.
If the magic took a little time to return during their writing and recording sessions in the British countryside last year, you wouldn’t notice from listening to ‘Palo Santo’, a record that manages to capture an unmistakeable Years & Years sound, while also pushing them into new territory. There’s particularly noticeable progress in the lyrics: whereas on ‘Communion’, the tracks often sounded as if Olly was writing them while looking directly into the eyes of their subjects, ignoring all surroundings and speaking purely from the heart, on ‘Palo Santo’, the lens is widened and we’re given more context, as well as a greater sense of space and time, to aid our understanding of each of these relationships and encounters. This advancement is particularly evident on ’Lucky Escape’ (in which a bitter scroll through an ex’s Instagram leads to a disparaging sense of relief at having ended things) and the title track (about the complicated experience of being the third party in an open relationship), each about different, yet fully-realised romantic partners.
This lyrical evolution is also apparent on first single ‘Sanctify’, the tale of a fling with a straight-identifying man, suggesting that a discrepancy in two partners’ confidence in their respective sexualities can lead to an interesting power-play in the bedroom. Despite the erotic thrill of the track, Olly’s writing manages to remain sympathetic to a man who “lately life’s been tearing […] apart." "I know how it can hurt / being cut in two and afraid,” he discloses, with surprising depth and warmth for a song so carnal. He’s a lyricist of great heart, trying to make sense of troubled men who are in turn trying to make sense of themselves, even if the romantic relationship he has with them doesn’t extend beyond the bedroom.
Olly’s background as an actor has gained new relevance with the release of ‘Palo Santo’, which sees him take a lead role in the accompanying short film and reteam with co-stars from his years on stage and screen. Before Years & Years properly got going, it was for supporting roles in films like ‘God Help The Girl’, ‘The Riot Club’ and (as Mikey teasingly reminds Olly during our interview) ‘Gulliver’s Travels’ that Olly became a recognisable face. He even featured opposite Greta Gerwig, the future Oscar-nominated director of ‘Lady Bird’, in the tiny 2011 indie ‘The Dish and The Spoon’, and could often be found on the London stage, turning in a string of critically-praised performances in plays between 2010 and 2013. The final play in which he appeared was John Logan’s ‘Peter & Alice’, which imagined the meeting between the two real life inspirations behind ‘Alice in Wonderland’ and ‘Peter Pan’, played by Dame Judi Dench and Ben Whishaw respectively. In cutaways to the fictional world created by J.M. Barrie, Olly played Peter Pan, fighting for his right to exist despite the wishes of his non-fictional counterpart, Peter Llewelyn Davies, that his life hadn’t been stolen from him by Barrie.
Jump forward five years and these three co-stars are reunited in another fantasy world in which Olly is a different kind of exceptional boy at the mercy of older powers, striving to assert his individuality. Dench is now the cryptic “mother of Palo Santo,” and Whishaw, who also appeared in one of the earliest Years & Years videos, for ‘Real’, makes a fleeting appearance as a hologram, giving an announcement to the city’s inhabitants. The film, shot in Thailand, is wild and ambitious in a way that, away from the output of the Beyoncés and Gagas of the A-list, pop often isn’t anymore. It also gives Olly the chance to sink his teeth into a role beyond just a dialogue-less, short-form music video. His character, also named Olly Alexander, is made to perform repeatedly for audiences, before growing tired and dismayed with being exploited and finding a way to explore his emotions away from the control of others.
Tonight, it’s on another London stage, a couple of miles north of the one they previously shared, that Olly and Dame Judi are reunited. Her voice is woven through the band’s live show at Camden’s Roundhouse, just as it is through the film. The iconic 83-year-old Oscar-winner’s narration has become an integral part of this project, but those hoping for an appearance from the Dame herself tonight are left disappointed, but probably not surprised, at her absence – she remains a formless, floating voice, just as in the world of Palo Santo.
But what does ‘Palo Santo’ actually mean? Despite its placement as the penultimate song on the album, the title track is the record’s centrepiece, a meditative and powerful cut more mature than anything found on their previous LP, on which Olly cries out, “You’re the darkness in me, Palo Santo.” In its most literal sense, the title comes from the name of the thick, wooden incense blocks that the party in the open relationship with whom Olly was involved was burning during their time together. The direct translation is, somewhat amusingly, ‘holy wood’, and their vapours are said to purify the air and cleanse it of evil and darkness.
But such is the expansive universe that the three-piece have built around this two-word term that it now carries several possible interpretations beyond the literal. Alternatively, ‘Palo Santo’ could be a moniker for this man himself, and the short-lived love triangle relationship, which perhaps represents a time of darkness for Olly.
Given the double use of ‘Palo Santo’ as the title of the record and of the futuristic, android world of the accompanying short film, a couple of further, more meta readings avail themselves to us. ‘Palo Santo’ the album could contain the darkness in Olly, with many songs, such as ‘Lucky Escape’, ‘All For You’ and ‘If You’re Over Me’, depicting him at challenging moments following a break-up, as he attempts to power through and come out on top of love rather than be defeated by it.
The world of Palo Santo seen in the film also has a strong connection to a possible darkness within Olly, as it explores the intersection of disconnect and emotionlessness with sensuality and performance. “The divine, amazing and incredible Olly Alexander”, as he is introduced by the Showman character, is one of very few non-androids in Palo Santo, and the androids, as we learn from the Star Wars-esque pre-scroll in Fred Rowson’s film, “desire nothing more than to experience real emotion,” which feels resonant with Olly’s outspoken discussion of his own mental health struggles. When taken alongside songs like ‘Hallelujah’and ‘Rendezvous’, which tell of rather non-committal sexual encounters, we see the same topics in ‘Palo Santo’ that Olly explored last year in his BBC documentary ‘Growing Up Gay’, of how struggles with mental health are sadly pervasive within the queer community.
In the live performance, it’s during ‘Palo Santo’ that Olly, donning a sparkly robe of almost ten metres in length, is raised up on a platform in front of a huge moon, a star ascending across a dark night. It’s a triumphant, almost unbelievable moment of spectacle meeting emotion. There may be “darkness” in this album, but it’s notably never in the form of sadness, and almost entirely hidden in joyous moments of pure pop. In their live show, Years & Years take the chance to show this overcoming of difficulty and adversity through a visual metaphor that literally grows before the audience’s eyes, and it’s an awesome sight to behold.
Despite being a Palo Santo Party, their setlist is equally balanced between their two albums. The newer cuts – such as the snappy ‘Karma’ and thumping ‘Hallelujah’, both just days old to fans – are received ecstatically, and the familiar hits bring some of the night’s most notable moments. Olly is briefly distracted by his front row devotees during ‘Take Shelter’ and stumbles to the end of a verse, before later bringing out an Italian fan who, thanks to the Make A Wish Foundation, gets to sit with him at the piano as he plays ‘Eyes Shut’, leading to one of the night’s biggest cheers. It’s when MNEK returns to the stage for the encore, following his spritely support set, for the debut of a new duet called ‘Valentino’, that the night hits peak gay, much to the fans’ delight. A Latin-flavoured bop telling of an infatuation with a boy “from the outskirts of East LA,” it owes a generous debt to Lady Gaga’s ‘Americano’ (a 2011 album track which opens “I met a girl in East LA…”), as well as the best of 90s girl-band R&B. Fingers crossed we get a studio version ASAP.
Earlier that day, we spoke to Years & Years about developing their songwriting for ‘Palo Santo’, avoiding sadness on a break-up record, when they expect they’ll finally be coming to New Zealand, and much more…
COUP DE MAIN: So it’s three years today since ‘Communion’ came out. EMRE TÜRKMEN: Is it? CDM: It is, happy birthday to it! How has release week been different this time around? OLLY ALEXANDER: It’s similar in the sense that I can’t remember much of it, because we’ve been so all over the place. I guess this time round, you’re… MIKEY GOLDSWORTHY: More of a veteran? OLLY: Yeah, I guess. First time around, I felt like I was hit by a truck. Not in a bad way, not in a negative way, just because it’s so overwhelming. But I think now I feel more grateful that fans have stuck around and that people like the new music. Because you can never take it for granted, can you? What about you guys? EMRE: The first time felt more intense, actually, I seem to remember. Because you know what to expect, in a certain way, it’s less mental. MIKEY: We’re doing similar things. We did [BBC Radio 2 show] Chris Evans last time. We did three countries in one day. CDM: Did you have a big launch show like this one? MIKEY: Not a big one, it was in a little club near Oxford Street. OLLY: We didn’t do anything in America though, did we? I think this time, we tried to do Palo Santo parties, like, East Coast and West Coast America, Berlin and here, so in that sense it’s been way more ambitious. Generally, I think we tried to be a bit more ambitious this time around.
CDM: There seems to be a real progression in your lyrics on this record. They’re more precise and specific than they were on ‘Communion’, and even involve some clever wordplay, particularly on ‘straight’ and ‘mask/masc’ on ‘Sanctify’. Did you approach writing lyrics differently this time around? OLLY: Yeah. Songwriting, especially lyrics – the more you do it, the more you uncover and the more you learn about your own process. The stuff that you write when you’re 20 is going to be different from the stuff you write when you’re 25, which is going to be different from the stuff you write when you’re 27. So I think, by its very nature, it develops and changes. But just as a human being, I feel more confident to write the shit that I actually have in my head. Not that it felt like I was stopping myself before, but I think it made a difference feeling more confident in myself this time around.
THE NEW SONG WE’RE MOST EXCITED TO PLAY LIVE IS…
Tumblr media
CDM: I think my favourite song on the album is ‘Karma’, which grapples with whether what you’ve done in the past will lead to good or bad fortune in the future. (“No I can’t tell what’s right or wrong / Is there a consequence for all I’ve done?”) Was there something you were trying to answer about the role that guilt has in your life, and whether it’s worth holding onto? OLLY: I guess there’s some specifics that I relate to my own life. Some of those are to do with relationships, some of those are to do with my childhood, and generally about morality and, like, is karma real? And that song, the beginning of the session, I was writing with my friend Sarah Hudson who’s amazing and she’s very like witchy and into like occults and esoteric stuff, and she did a reading for us at the beginning and one of the cards was called ‘karma’ and we were like,“Oh, yes! Let’s write a song called ‘Karma’.”
CDM: How was the experience of writing with Julia Michaels and Justin Tranter on ‘Hallelujah’ and ‘Preacher’? OLLY: Oh, good! It was kind of intense because they’re songwriting royalty. I had the head of our label call me up before the session, because everyone was freaking out. They think if you put people in a room, you’re going to come out with a number one song, and there’s so much pressure on it to be good. So I was quite nervous to meet them, but they’re so warm and so inviting. Julia’s a legend too, but because Justin has had such a trailblazing, queer career and because he’s such a queer force in songwriting and in pop music, I was really humbled to be in his presence. And it was fun, you know, it was nice to work with them because you get to see into another writer’s process. I had no idea if my ideas or the stuff that I’ve been doing as a songwriter was any good, and then when I worked with them, I realised that they do similar things, and I was like,“Okay, this is nice, to be able to do this.” And we got a good song out of it!
MY FAVOURITE SONG WRITTEN BY JULIA MICHAELS AND JUSTIN TRANTER IS…

CDM: ‘Palo Santo’ seems to be very much a post-relationship record, with ‘If You’re Over Me’, ‘All For You’ and ‘Lucky Escape’ – as well as the Kele Okereke song that you featured on last year, Olly, ‘Grounds For Resentment’ – detailing how an ex can continue to occupy space in your mind and life once the relationship is over. It’s kind of lacking in heartbreak, unlike most break-up records we hear. Were there sadder songs you wrote for the record that didn’t make the cut? OLLY: I’m trying to think now. MIKEY: There were slower songs. I don’t know if they were sad. OLLY: We had a lot of songs, and then whittled them down. The ones we put on the album felt like the strongest ones. It wasn’t until I saw them together as a group like that where I realised the theme did feel like looking back on a relationship and trying to sort of dig through the shit that happened and feeling sort of angry and frustrated about that, but in a place of empowerment rather than feeling destroyed by it.
CDM: Olly, you’ve described ‘Lucky Escape’ as a petty song. Do you think that pettiness is a necessary, or helpful, part of the post-break-up experience? OLLY: Kind of! I think that I really, really bite my tongue in arguments with people, and I never say the thing I wish I’d said. But in a song, you have way more time! <laughs> MIKEY: It’s annoying when you have an argument and you go back and you’re like, “Ah, I should’ve said that! I would’ve sounded so smart!”
CDM: Olly, you gave Rihanna the first LP of ‘Palo Santo’ after you appeared with her on The Graham Norton Show. So say she’s scouting for new writers for her next album, and just one song from the record could be your calling card, which one would you want her to listen to and think, “I want him to write for me”? OLLY: I’m trying to imagine myself as Rihanna and think what she would like. Maybe ‘Palo Santo’. I’m just proud of the song and the songwriting on that. It’s quite unusual for a pop song. I guess you can argue, “What the fuck is a pop song?” But maybe that one. I feel like she might vibe with that.
CDM: ‘Palo Santo’ is so ambitious and high-concept, in a way that you don’t see many other British artists attempting or getting away with. It seems to come more naturally to American artists like Janelle Monáe and Halsey. Do you think there’s something about British culture that makes it easy to ridicule or be cynical about these sorts of ideas? OLLY: There’s some truth to that, I expect. MIKEY: David Bowie was British and did a lot of that kind of stuff. EMRE: I mean, I think the first concept album of all time was The Beatles. <laughs> Pink Floyd springs to mind… CDM: I guess I mean more in the present. OLLY: But you’re right, I agree. MIKEY: I know what you mean, Americans seem more confident with not caring what other people think. British people always seem to scrutinise other British people. Australians have inherited a little bit of that culture, as well. Especially in Melbourne. OLLY: Brits can be cynical, but I like that about being British. I guess you could say Americans definitely go for bells and whistles and big statements, and are generally considered more ambitious. CDM: Was there ever a concern about people not getting on board with it? OLLY: Yeah, I was worried all the time. But I realised that I was the best salesperson for the project, so I was telling everyone it was going to be so amazing. I went into the label and gave them a PowerPoint presentation about how everything was going to look and all the videos and the merchandise and the live show. I compensated feeling a bit nervous about the whole thing by being extra, extra, extra confident on the surface. <laughs>
HOW YOU GET TO PALO SANTO…
Tumblr media
CDM: You’ve reteamed with your former co-star Judi Dench for the narration on ‘Palo Santo’, which is quite abstract – did she have much of an idea of what it was she was saying? OLLY: Yeah! Well, I said to her that she was the queen of androids. She’s sort of like the mother of Palo Santo, so she’s like this omniscient, omnipotent and omnipresent – all three – character within Palo Santo, but she’s also kind of serving a poetic Beyoncé voiceover in ‘Lemonade’. So I told her all of that, and I think she was a bit like, “What the fuck?” But she loved it. She was like, “Are you telling me I’m old? Like an old android?” And I was like, “No!” So she was a bit upset about that. But she killed it!
CDM: Back when you were acting, Olly, you played quite a few innocent or corrupted boys dealing with something traumatic, however your character in ‘Palo Santo’ is more powerful and strong, even though he’s in a subordinate role. How much of an impact did being cast in those sorts of roles have on how you saw yourself, and are you trying to push back against that image of yourself now? OLLY: I mean, you put it in a really good way, actually. When you’re acting, you’re just taking the world that you’re given and you don’t really have much choice in the matter. In that sense, I found it quite creatively stifling, because you’re just doing someone else’s work and you’re playing [roles] other people are putting you into. But even when I look at the music videos we did for ‘Communion’, like ‘King’… I guess by the time we got to ‘Worship’ it had shifted, but in all our music videos, I’m getting thrown around, or beaten up, or in ‘Shine’a building collapses on me. I got more and more dissatisfied with being passive, and I think part of the reason I wanted to make a film of ‘Palo Santo’ was so that I could embody a character I would want to be.
CDM: The film has a pretty ambiguous ending, with your character onstage, unable to sing. Will we get to see more of this world, will it be expanded? OLLY: Yes, it will be. As soon as the label give us more money! <laughs> MIKEY: It’s expensive, Palo Santo.
CDM: When can we expect to FINALLY have you play in New Zealand? Because there was the whole situation in 2016 with the cancelled shows… OLLY: I know… It wasn’t our fault! MIKEY: Wait, what happened with that again? OLLY: It was the Ellie Goulding support slot. [The band had to pull out of the Australia and New Zealand leg of Ellie Goulding’s Delirium tour due to logistical difficulties.] MIKEY: Oh, sorry, yeah! My family bought tickets, so I owe them all, like, a hundred quid. There’s talk of next year. I mean, don’t quote me on this, which you will. <laughs>But there’s talk of Oceania/Asia vibes next year. That would make sense. I can pretty much 100% say we won’t be in New Zealand this year. OLLY: I really hope when we go that we get some actual time to spend there, and not just, like, one day. MIKEY: Yeah, it’s beautiful. One of the best-looking countries.

INTERVIEW: YEARS & YEARS ON THE WORLD OF 'PALO SANTO', THE DIFFICULT SECOND ALBUM AND DAME JUDI DENCH.
24th August 2018 by
Rory Horne
We meet for our interview on the third anniversary of the release of ‘Communion’, four days after ‘Palo Santo’ dropped, on the afternoon of the London instalment of the brief run of gigs across Europe and North America that are serving as the album’s launch parties.
This advancement is particularly evident on 'Lucky Escape' (in which a bitter scroll through an ex’s Instagram leads to a disparaging sense of relief at having ended things) and the title track (about the complicated experience of being the third party in an open relationship), each about different, yet fully-realised romantic partners.
This lyrical evolution is also apparent on first single ‘Sanctify’, the tale of a fling with a straight-identifying man, suggesting that a discrepancy in two partners’ confidence in their respective sexualities can lead to an interesting power-play in the bedroom. Despite the erotic thrill of the track, Olly's writing manages to remain sympathetic to a man who "lately life's been tearing [...] apart." "I know how it can hurt / being cut in two and afraid," he discloses, with surprising depth and warmth for a song so carnal. He's a lyricist of great heart, trying to make sense of troubled men who are in turn trying to make sense of themselves, even if the romantic relationship he has with them doesn't extend beyond the bedroom.
Olly’s background as an actor has gained new relevance with the release of ‘Palo Santo’, which sees him take a lead role in the accompanying short film and reteam with co-stars from his years on stage and screen. I had no idea if my ideas or the stuff that I’ve been doing as a songwriter was any good, and then when I worked with them, I realised that they do similar things, and I was like, “Okay, this is nice, to be able to do this.” And we got a good song out of it!
I guess you can argue, "What the fuck is a pop song?" But maybe that one.
<laughs>
But even when I look at the music videos we did for ‘Communion’, like ‘King’… I guess by the time we got to ‘Worship’ it had shifted, but in all our music videos, I’m getting thrown around, or beaten up, or in ‘Shine’ a building collapses on me.
<laughs> But there’s talk of Oceania/Asia vibes next year. That would make sense. I can pretty much 100% say we won’t be in New Zealand this year. OLLY: I really hope when we go that we get some actual time to spend there, and not just, like, one day. MIKEY: Yeah, it’s beautiful. One of the best-looking countries.

(via The Day of Reckoning Arrives for Lindsey Graham: why did he and the GOP Crown Rev. Moon Messiah?)
==========================================
THE DAY OF RECKONING ARRIVES FOR LINDSEY GRAHAM: WHY DID HE AND THE GOP CROWN REV. MOON MESSIAH?
Jehovah as Yod He Vau He; with the added Shin….is “Jesus” as “The Help of Jehovah”
The Evil of the Day,
and the Word of my Father Lord Jesus
to the main co-conspirators:
Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.),Rep. Curt Weldon (R-PA.),Rep. Chris Cannon (R-Utah),Rep. Roscoe Bartlett (R-Md.)The Folks with the Axe to Grind;
….and all the Right Wing Republicans
who unlawfully Crowned Rev. Moon
as their Messiah and King
in Washington DC…..
BROKE THE LAW!!!
The Coup in the Dirksen Building in Washington DC … Against Section 9 of the Constitution …by Senator Lindsey Graham and Speaker Hastert….
‘….Because ye have said,“……We have made a covenant with Death, and with Hell we are at agreement;when the overflowing scourge shall pass through,it shall not come to us:for we have made LIES our Refuge, and under FALSEHOOD have we hid ourselves…..”Isaiah 28:15
The Unlawful End of Democracy, why did Senator Lindsey Graham help crown Mr. Sun and Mrs. Moon at the Dirksen Center Federal Building in Washington DC? And betray the 1st Amendment of the Constitution, and End the Separation of Church and State???
How did This happen??For those who were there on March 23rd, 2004, at the Dirksen Senate Office Building, saw the opening ceremony, with a rabbi blowing a ram’s horn.
“…….Most Jews would hold off on this until the High Holy Days, but it probably counts if the Moshiach shows up in a federal office building at taxpayer expense. Then we see the man of the hour, Moon, chilling at a table at the Dirksen in a tuxedo, soaking all this up. He claps. He’s having a ball.
Cut to the ritual. Eyes downcast, a man identified as Congressman Danny K. Davis (D-Ill.) is bringing a crown, atop a velvety purple cushion, to a figure who stands waiting austerely with his wife.
Now Moon is wearing robes that Louis XIV would have appreciated. All of this has quickly been spliced into a promo reel by Moon’s movement, which implies to its followers that the U.S. Congress itself has crowned the Washington Times owner…..”
The Breaking of the Bond of Integrity: the Corruption of the Senate
“……But Section 9 of the Constitution  forbids giving out titles of nobility,
setting a certain tone that might have made the Congressional hosts
shy about celebrating the coronation on their websites.
They included conservatives,
the traditional fans of Moon’s newspaper:
Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.),
Rep. Curt Weldon (R-PA.),
Rep. Chris Cannon (R-Utah),
Rep. Roscoe Bartlett (R-Md.)
and Republican strategy god Charlie Black,
whose PR firm represents Ahmed Chalabi’s Iraqi National Congress……”
The charge for breaking a vital tenet of the Constitution is then “aiding and abetting”, the offence of giving material support to someone involved in the commission of a crime, which the Conservative right wing, who were heavily financed by the feigned generosity of Rev. Moon, are therefore directly responsible for, as giving access to a Federal Building for his Coronation, all happening on Federal Ground. Rev. Moon made sure his Coronation as Messiah would be in Washington DC, and done on US government and therefore “Sovereign” land: but of course. This is what officially ended the separation of Church and State in America, to which Senator Lindsey Graham and others, like Republican House Speaker Hastert, had full knowledge.
For those who think all the Democrats were virgins in this matter I sadly point out this:
“………But there were also liberal House Democrats like Sanford Bishop (D-Ga.) and Davis. Rep. Harold Ford (D-Tenn.) later told the Memphis Flyer that he’d been erroneously listed on the program, but had never heard of the event, which was sponsored by the Washington Times Foundation.  (  At this time the current president of the Washington Times Foundation is Larry Moffitt of the Unification Church: who organized the event, and was therefore a witting co-conspirator.)
Rep. Curt Weldon’s office tenaciously denied that the Congressman was there, before being provided by The Gadflyer with a photo; then saying, “It is quite accurate that the Washington Times host, but we have nothing to do with the agenda, the organization, the scheduling, and our role would be limited explicitly to the attendance of the Congressman…..”
But if any can recall, the Moonies do not believe that secular law applies to them, which is a pernicious belief that was picked up and run with by the Tea Party and the entire GOP leadership. For them it’s just “Heavenly Deception” to lie for God; so it’s ok to lie about anything:  24/7. Rev. Moon said it was “OK”.
This was one of Rev. Moon’s core beliefs, that he was “above the Law”, and for which he ended up doing 18 months in Danbury Federal Penitentiary by those not convinced of his moral superiority.
For as the Commandment States:
“…..Thou shalt not bear false witness…”
Rev. Moon obviously thought this particular Command of
the 10 Commandments of God
didn’t apply to the divine race of the Koreans.
