the best piece of (diluc-specific) canon lore this brought about was that alice and varka are basically his honorary parents
#⌜ ooc ⌟#two characters that im dying to meet in game and that get more intriguing every time we hear about them#yea i have more to say on the topic but this post is specifically appreciating this simple fact#because i am such a sucker for mentor/parental figure diluc (looking at razor especially but also many other potentially)#its actually really comforting to think he also has parental figures who especially stepped up to fill that role when crepus died#in alice's case anyway. it sounds like varka was already a very important figure in diluc's life and that reflection deserves its own post#god i just. love how interconnected all of mondstadt is#theres different little cliques like favonius and the church and the guild#and a few outliers like diluc and razor and diona and mona and venti#but every character has ties to several other characters#the mondstadt roster makes up this big cohesive unit and you dont get anything like it in the other nations#and its fitting given its Supposed to feel like home. its fitting that thats where everyone is in fact a big (dysfunctional) family

Expanding a thought from a conversation this morning:
In general, I think "Is X out-of-character?" is not a terribly useful question for a writer. It shuts down possibility, and interesting directions you could take a character.
A better question, I believe, is "What would it take for Character to do X?" What extremity would she find herself in, where X starts to look like a good idea? What loyalties or fears leave him with X as his only option? THAT'S where a potentially interesting story lies.
In practice, I find that you can often justify much more from a character than you initially dreamed you could: some of my best stories come from "What might drive Character to do [thing he would never do]?" As long as you make it clear to the reader what the hell pushed your character to this point, you've got the seed of a compelling story on your hands.

admittedly i’m still displeased with the overall event. the lore was good but the execution was terrible, for one thing, and even though the lore was good on its own it really didn’t tell us shit about diluc’s outfit which is what the event was supposed to be about.
i appreciate how much it expanded upon his rapport with so many people within mondstadt, but as someone who muses him, i would have rather he be given a proper spotlight than mostly just shown off through other people’s perspective. jean and barbara were two of the three main characters of their skin event and it was a much more extensive story; we spent an entire lantern rite running around with keqing before seeing hers and ningguang was fairly involved in that event too and also had her skin shown off in her hangout; fischl’s was tied to one of the best character development arc we’ve gotten so far. as for diluc they just... told us it was an outfit from back in the days. and had him put it on randomly so he’d be wearing it during our last conversation.
it just feels like a Lot was teased without ever paying off where he’s concerned - they pointed out in the program that the outfit didnt have his vision on it but never actually explained that in game, they let us know about his leaving mondstadt without ever saying exactly what he was doing or how long he was gone, whatever the heck it is he was doing on stormbearer mountains that he said he would tell us about later was never followed up, even that invitation to dinner i feel we were cheated out of (which is especially annoying because the ending we got was so underwhelming).
i really really hope this was all meant to be a set-up for a future story where they’ll be able to dive further into everything that was at stake and everyone’s ties to everyone else by involving more characters more thoroughly, otherwise i will have felt pretty letdown by this event. and unfortunately, even that wouldn’t make up for my biggest personal gripe - the fact that every other character who has a skin so far also had a rendered cutscene with them wearing it.
and i can’t not mention the fact that the two biggest lore bombs in the event are very specifically about kaeya. kaeya is one of my topmost favorite characters so there’s a part of me that’s extremely hyped about it, but the other part of me that loves and relates to diluc that already has to put up with 90% of the fanbase hating on him/only giving him any consideration because of his ties to kaeya... is really fed up.
