Saw a post. Got to thinking. Am now wondering how my interpretation of characters differs from the canon, and how much of that is:
Deliberate and reasonable: in a 'fighting against canon-authorial biases' way (e.g. taking queer-coded characters to actually queer, addressing the religious stereotypes and racism baked into certain characters, expanding a female characters motivations in ways that don't match up to canon but do match up to Logical Thinking Human Behavior, updating language and slang to not include slurs, etc.)
Reasonable: in a 'yeah, I guess if you stretch your extrapolation of the canon, or focus on this part of the narrative, you can get there without contradicting the rest too much' kind of way
Deliberate: started nearly canon, and then 'ooc' but as an understandable result of the fic's events
Semi-Deliberate: kind of an art style thing, where it's definitely That Character, but through the author's specific style of dialogue and prose; author-tinted glasses, if you will
Semi-Deliberate: the author was trying, but kind of juggled too many things and you can tell that they slipped too far away from canon, and realized it, but didn't have the time/energy to fix it
Deliberate: different from canon, but within an acceptable standard deviation from the canon/mean
Deliberate: different from canon, in a sort of an AU-where-character-is-X, rather than just a different lens or the result of the fic events
Deliberate: ...but you should have honestly just made an OC, this is basically a different, new character
Probably not deliberate: different, but in a way that's kind of just. off-putting, and not particularly self-aware on the part of the author.
Feel free to reblog and have fun, and use this to talk about your own writing but DO NOT use this to vague and talk smack about other authors in your fandoms. Be Nice.

Hatsune Miku save our souls from this fucking Wattpad writing I swear Jordan and blair (<- wrong name and I don’t care) make me question on what the hell I am reading
That is not Miku-sama's job.
:OOC:
im going to take a moment to talk about this, because this ask has been sitting in my box, because I didn't want to be mean in my response, but I'm just going to say whats on my mind anyway
i cant tell if this was meant to be like,,,, a joke? like a haha funny dig funny joke but like?
respectfully, if you dont want to read my shit, then don't. i am not running this account for any of you, I'm running it because I think its fun. i am having fun and I want to keep having fun
briar admin and i are friends. weve known each other for a while outside of this little roleplay sphere. i want to have a fun time with my friend, playing pretend on the internet
if you dont want to read my "fucking wattpad writing" then don't. no ones forcing you to. not me, not briar admin, no one. so what if I wrote like that? who gives a shit? if you dislike it so much that you purposefully spelt Briars name wrong and its making you "question on what the hell you are reading", then go read something else

I've talked a fair amount about how byan has been bullied and hurt by teachers in the past (& how they'd hit their limit and seek drastic revenge, in some cases), but I've never really talked much about how byan has also bullied and outright tormented teachers for themself... like yeah, it's definitely because they don't trust teachers or authority figures in general due to their past experiences, but that doesn't mean that their 9th grade math teacher deserved to feel afraid for his own safety or that their 10th grade biology teacher should have been so stressed that she retired early. byan has been done dirty by a lot of people in their life but they've also been a genuine menace to others who gave them no real reason to be, and they have taken enjoyment in it in a lot of cases.

I think some of the arguments about fan interpretations of characters and OOCness forget a fundamental part of human nature which is this: each of us perceives the world and the people in it in slightly different ways based on our own experiences.
Most people have certain characteristics they consider fundamental to their Blorbo and some characteristics that are less important and could be changed, ignored, or scrapped for AU purposes. Unfortunately, which specific characteristics fall into which category are not going to be the same from person to person. Sometimes the overlap between two people's interpretations will be huge, and those two people will probably enjoy the same fan content. Sometimes not so much.
Personally, I write for a ship that were childhood friends that became lovers. In many AUs, people have them meeting for the first time in adulthood, and for me, that changes the nature of the ship and their characters so much that I can't really get into it. I consider their childhood friendship fundamental to them as people, and those authors don't. Which is fine. Many other people like those AUs. Nobody here is really in the wrong, we just have different opinions on what makes these particular Blorbos them.
In almost all cases, someone out there will find your interpretation of a character OOC. And that's fine. Hopefully they are polite and simply choose not to read your fics/engage with your HCs/whatever. But I think all of us have had the experience of reading a wildly OOC take and seeing other people enthusiastically going along with this "wrong" interpretation of the characters and thinking, "What??!?!"
It's fine. It's normal. It's annoying as hell (people are wrong on the internet), but it's inevitable. And if you find that interpretation particularly heinous to your Blorbo sensibilities, the block button is your friend.

//With Lynette by default I treat her knowledge of the Harbingers outside of Arlecchino basically the same way I know the upper-level supervisors that I work under. She knows who they are (of course) and if someone refers to them by name or title, it's not really a question. But if she hasn't seen them in person, she's not going to necessarily recognize them by appearance.

I am mostly on a hiatus at the moment, everybody. Not posting much, except for little things here and there when I feel like it. Not doing much in the way of replies or in depth rping, though.
I don't know if or when I'll be back into rping. I don't want to go into details about it. I have personal things going on in addition to just general loss of interest in the hobby. I'm sorry. I'll come back if I feel up to it again at some point, but I don't want to make promises to anybody and let anybody down by doing so.
In the meantime, go ahead and reply to threads if you like. I am saving them in my drafts in case motivation to rp does come back. I don't know.

Writing fanfic with like 90% of the plot already planned is so funny but also so painful because every time there’s a mystery I purposefully put into the story as something that will be foreshadowed to revealed and revealed later in just praying people don’t think its a plot hole.
Like for example, the timeline OG Cale and Choi Han living in being different from TBoaH with some similarities. (The major differences being that Lily Henituse is alive, and while the rest of the continent took a pretty hard hit with the war, the Roan Kingdom managed to rebuild some of itself later in the war) , this one is so important because like, things aren’t supposed to be that way! I didn’t change canon for no reason! That happened for a reason! Guys! I swear!
Same thing with like KRS and OG Cale being able to hear eachother since they were young through their dreams, like that also has a reasoning behind it I promiseeee guys I swear😭😭 it’s like my biggest irrational fear that people will think that I’m just doing these things with nothing to back them up even though I know I shouldn’t rlly think abt it too much and just write the story like I intended 😭😭
I feel like a part of writing fanfic, especially LCF fanfic that makes me so nervous is the fact that canon is already and established and really well written universe. If things change, I feel like I need to make it OBVIOUS that they changed on purpose and not cause I’m changing things for the sake of changing them.
Sometimes I re read older chapters and go “wow, the delivery of this line sucked! I should re-write that slightly” because I’ve gotten better at phrasing things but WHAT IF ITS TOO LATEEEEEEE 😭😭😭😭😭😭 when I don’t have a limited vocabulary anymore it’s going to be the day I write something real good
Like I’m reading the early chaoters of [In the Borderline] and it’s like, FUCK some of these things just look like a dues ex machina even though they have reasons behind them.
I think a huge part of it is because of the wording, and how sudden everything is, I should have emphasized the characters confusion to these things to as a way to show that yes, things are off, BUT I DIDNT BECAUSE WHEN I WAS WRITING I FORGOT TO PROOF READ 😭😭😭😭 AND NOW ITS TOO LATEEE
Idk I’m just saying stuff at this point, but I guess my point is for a story like lcf, I want my fanfic to be something good becauee I really love lcf. I want to be able to write a story that shows how much I love the characters and things I want to see happening, but without erasing importance of characters or anything from TCF because I firmly believe that KRS is important no matter what.
There are things I will never change, like KRS being the one to name Raon, KRS being the children averaging whatever years old’s father, KRS having the silver shield(cause I think that’s like THE ancient power that represents him, that and Vitality of the Heart)
In a regression fic like [In the Borderline], where the time line has diverged so much, and in general is a fic that plays the long game when it comes to plot points, I just want it to be clear that everything happens for a reason and that I’ll never change KRS’s importance to the story, cause in that fic, OG Cale and KRS are both so important.
Choi Han too but he’s like, supposed to be cool and mysterious rn I can’t reveal too much abt him and TBoaH and why the world Cale and Choi Han lived in has so many differences from TboaH novel

i think something else that's so sad is the entire sequence of the thin man taking six ... the way six reaches out for mono multiple times , desperately trying to urge him to take her hand and run with her ... it wasn't a halfhearted effort at all , she was genuinely lingering and imploring him so pleadingly until it was literally too dangerous for her to keep trying to convince him , so she finally took off running .
then she reaches for him again when he's under the bed , as the thin man is snatching her ... and later when we see her inside the television , she's actually distinctly shouting his name . ' mono ! ' it's so ...
