Stygiomedusa gigantea, commonly known as the giant phantom jelly is a part of the monotypic genus of deep sea jellyfish, Stygiomedusa. This is in the Ulmaridae family. It can't actually sting you as its—30-foot-long—”mouth arms” are just there to trap prey rather than sting them.
This ghostly giant is a rare sight.
MBARI's ROVs have logged thousands of dives, yet we have only seen this spectacular species nine times. The first specimen of the giant phantom jelly was collected in 1899, but it was not until 60 years later that scientists recognized this as a new species.
I’ve seen this comment a few times on my art here and on insta and I’m genuinely curious— WHERE did people get the idea that the Creature “just had creepy eyes”?? That Victor only ran away because the Creature’s eyes freaked him out?
I’ve seen people say this repeatedly and it couldn’t be further from the truth like. He is explicitly described as an eight foot tall cobbled together corpse with skin that barely covers his veins, yes his eyes are creepy but that would probably be the last thing anyone would notice about the Creature tbh 😭
i think there’s divinity in gross and ugly things. i think the radical love and acceptance of what is weird and nasty is angelic and i think there is something holy about indulging in the neglected/looked down on/outcast/unacceptable parts of this world. you should let yourself be weird
my favourite thing about hannibal as a character is that he operates on fey rules. here is a creature who wants to eat you. open his mouth and you will find lacefine rows of needle-sharp teeth. he’s a ghoulish, antler-clad thing that wears human skin and dances to our tunes.
and i think you know on some level, facing him, that he wants to eat you, so aware of his appetite. but, if you follow his rules, his hospitality; if you are polite and interesting and if you say all the right things… you’re suddenly a precious thing to him. and his love is terrible, but if you have it he will do everything but eat you.
he’ll lather you in blood, he’ll drop his soul-stealing morsels into your mouth. he might even grant you a wish.
people miss the point of laios' character so bad because i feel like they're missing his defining trait, and the trait that so many autistic people irl have: everybody assuming that he's a dumbass but he actually knows what the fuck he's doing. not all the time, he's still a human after all, but everybody assumes that he's completely inept based on first impressions and internal biases. he's a neurodivergent person living in a world full of neurotypical people who don't understand his train of thought or his interests or his passions, but he persists and saves people's asses anyway based on his own knowledge and intuition, even though everybody else perceives him as unassuming and literally not the right guy for the job. and those people who mischaracterize him so drastically forget the "actually smart and observant" part.
