Name: Ryou Bakura
Series: Yu-Gi-Oh!!!
Continuity: Anime
Age: 16-19 (RP dependent)
Height: 5'8"
Birthday: September 2nd
Birthplace: Kyoto, Japan
Orientation: Bisexual
Species: Human
Occupation: Student / Freelance figurine painter
Father: Unnamed
Mother: Unnamed (deceased)
Sibling(s): Amane Bakura (deceased)
Bio:
Born in Japan but raised in England, Ryou lived with his sister and parents. His father an antiques dealer and his mother a simple housewife, Ryou's life was relatively uneventful until the age of ten where he went with his father on a trip to Egypt. It was there that Ryou's father tried to endure a test to become the wielder of the evil spirit within the Millennium Ring, where a young Ryou had picked up the ring instead. Unknowing, his innocent and kind heart had caused the evil spirit within to completely control his mind where he suddenly blanked out. It took him nearly a decade to remember what he did when Yami Bakura had possessed him, but he had inadvertently killed someone when he was possessed.
Shortly after this incident, Ryou felt as though a curse had fallen on him. Specifically, he would have gaps in memory and was often in trouble at school for 'delinquent behavior'.
The worst would come when his sister and mother died in a car accident. Ryou was so distraught by this horrible tragedy that the spirit began to take over more and more without his knowledge. At fourteen, the spirit processing Ryou had trapped his friends' souls inside of their game figures which caused rumors around that Ryou was cursed or downright evil.
At some point, Ryou and his father would move back to Japan where he transferred to Domino High School. He would be introduced to Yugi Moto and his friends and finally felt like things were going right for him instead of nothing but evil. Though he was frequently bullied for his appearance, accent, kindness and shy demeanor. This only further aggravated the spirit who had completely taken over by the time Yugi Moto would go to Duelist Kingdom.
After Duelist Kingdom, Ryou would repeatedly try to throw away or destroy the Millennium Ring, only for it to come back and wreck havoc on his mind. The evil spirit would trap him inside his own mind, begging to be let out while he would never see what this spirit was doing to his body and friends.
Ryou would only have brief moments of consciousness at that point. He would remember hearing Tea mention that Yugi's puzzle was stolen, only for the spirit to take over and him coming back into consciousness atop a blimp facing off against Yugi in a duel. His arm was bleeding and in intense pain, only to completely lose consciousness again when the spirit took over. He would awaken again after Battle City had ended, at least relieved the spirit would quiet down for a while.
Ryou did everything to try and get away from the evil spirit. He tried Ouija boards to talk with him, cleansing rituals, praying in church, trying to seal the spirit within a teddy bear, etc etc. His deep love of the occult got him nowhere and it would end in another takeover by the spirit.
He doesn't know but he would end up all the way in Egypt to join the pharaoh in his quest to regain his memories. Yet even when the evil spirit was pulled out of his body, it still left Ryou too weak to take over again and thus was passed out.
He doesn't fully understand the next part, but he would eventually awaken with the ring's spirit finally gone and finally free of the evil spirit that had been possessing him for years at this point.
Now able to do what he wants, Ryou can finally live freely without fear of the spirit anymore. Particularly, he enjoys two hobbies - the occult and Dungeons and Dragons prop design.
He loves creating little figures for games, and frequently studies on knowledge of the occult. In his bedroom, he owns a ouija board that he hopes to someday contact his sister with. His love of all things macabre came as a way to process the grief in his heart over the death of his mom and sister, as well as an attempt to discover the spirit that once possessed him.
Ryou is incredibly sweet and soft spoken. He's friendly and very polite to speak to, but is often shy so he isn't one to engage in conversation easily. He is also incredibly naive and will often run with something out of the kindness of his heart.
He also has a habit of writing his sister letters and sending them into the sky via a balloon in hopes they'll reach heaven. Though due to his love of the paranormal, Ryou often does worry he'll someday encounter an evil spirit like that one.
Unlike Yugi, Ryou never developed or talked to the Yami of himself possessing him. He is deeply afraid of him and due to his soft nature, he let the evil spirit all but bully and abuse him. Despite being so similar to Yugi, the spirit never bothered to teach him true inner strength.
Growing up in England, Ryou has a strong British accent that comes through when he speaks Japanese. Although fluent, his pronunciation is rather lacking which would often end in him being bullied by classmates for his poor pronunciation.

Yu-Gi-Oh! Spirit Companions, Ranked
As I’ve been watching Yu-Gi-Oh! VRAINS, I’ve been thinking a lot about how characters like Ai are represented and used within the franchise. For lack of a better term, these spirit companions show up in each Yu-Gi-Oh! series as a guide for the protagonist, someone they can talk to and confer with in and out of duels. They play a slightly different role than the main character’s group of friends, often sharing a mental or spiritual connection that elevates their relationship to something closer to kin. Ai is one of the most active deuteragonists throughout the franchise, and so I wanted to take a look at all six of the Yu-Gi-Oh! anime series and talk about how they play into the story and whether their inclusion helps to further the themes of the series.
Tumblr media
6. The Crimson Dragon, from Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D’s
The Crimson Dragon is a being made of sacred fire that, along with the six legendary dragons (the titular 5 D’s), fought against the evil Earthbound Immortals and sealed them in the Nazca Lines. He is the source of all the main characters’ powers, which include energy manipulation, psychic powers, and creating miracles. Although he is the reason the cast gathered together and were able to become a team, the Crimson Dragon otherwise only appears when the plot demands it.
When I first started thinking about this list, I wasn’t even sure if 5D’s had a spirit companion of some kind. It’s really downplayed within the series, since all of the main characters have to share parts of the Crimson Dragon, and it doesn’t really play into the series outside of its role as a plot device. Unlike the other characters in this list, the Crimson Dragon doesn’t talk or interact with the cast, acting more like a guardian than a proper character. There’s no personality there and nothing to real talk about, besides it being kind of a lame design for a dragon.
Tumblr media
5. Yubel, from Yu-Gi-Oh! GX
Yubel is sort of a weird case compared to the rest of the characters on this list, since her first appearance is over halfway through the series as an antagonist for Jaden. She was originally a magical guardian meant to protect an individual known as the Supreme King, who wielded the power of Gentle Darkness. Thousands of years after this pact was made, her spirit was placed into a Duel Monsters card, and eventually the card ended up in the hands of Jaden. As it happens, Jaden is a descendant of the Supreme King, and so the spirit within the Yubel card promised to protect Jaden from any and all threats. Unfortunately, Yubel considered any sort of friendship with others as a threat to their relationship, and so everyone who dueled Jaden fell into a coma. In the hopes of helping her find the “power of justice”, Jaden sent the Yubel card into space in a KaibaCorp satellite, but she ended up encountering The Light of Destruction which only corrupted her further. Eventually the satellite crashed back onto Earth and Yubel was freed, allowing her to take revenge against Jaden for betraying her. She does this by torturing all of his friends via Shadow Duels and eventually doing the same to Jaden, equating their shared pain as a sort of love. But, thanks to Jaden’s incredibly large heart, he is able to eventually forgive Yubel and accept her, which allows the two of them to fuse together and free Yubel from The Light of Destruction.
I’ve never really been able to come to terms with Yubel as a spirit companion. She’s an extremely out-of-place element in the otherwise goofy series, to an uncomfortable extent. Between her weird sadomasochism fetish and her overly possessive relationship with Jaden, the whole thing comes off as a strange thing for a kid’s show to do. There’s no real conclusion that effectively explains why Jaden would suddenly forgive her outside of him being such a stand-up dude and destiny-bound to be with her. This is several steps above GX characters talking about “playing solitaire” with their favorite sexy cards from the classic memetic shared video, and I’ve always found it uncomfortable on reflection.
Tumblr media
4. Astral, from Yu-Gi-Oh! ZeXal
Astral is an extra-terrestrial from the Astral World, which is a thinly-veiled sci-fi allegory for Heaven. He is initially sent to Earth in order to garner enough power to destroy the Barian World, which is a thinly-veiled sci-fi allegory for Hell, but is intercepted partway and attaches himself to Yuma Tsukumo, a third-rate duelist with big dreams. When he reaches Earth, Astral’s memories scatter in the form of 100 “Number” cards, and now he’ll need to help Yuma learn how to duel so that they can win back all of the Numbers and Astral can complete his mission.
Astral’s just a real weenie, and a pretty boring character overall. His only narrative purpose for a majority of the series is to bail Yuma out when he makes a bad play, and to talk about how weird human customs are compared to his pseudo-angel alien customs. And there was that one time Astral felt so betrayed when Yuma kept a secret from him that he went crazy and almost killed the both of them via a corrupted fusion. It’s nice that he’s part of the show from the beginning so the plot starts right away, but that ends up leading to another problem, thanks to the Number card gimmick. Because only Number cards can destroy other Number cards in a duel, the way that he’s integrated ends up making almost every duel go the exact same way, all the way up to the very end of the series.
Tumblr media
3. Yuto, from Yu-Gi-Oh! Arc-V
Yuto is one of three characters from an alternate dimension, called the Xyz Dimension, that shares the same look and build of protagonist Yuya Sakaki, who is from the Standard Dimension. Initially believed to be a villain, the truth is eventually revealed that he comes from a world that was decimated by an army from another alternate dimension, the Fusion Dimension, and he’s come to the Standard Dimension to get his revenge on the Fusion invaders. Although he ends up dying in a duel, his soul fuses with Yuya’s, and so he begins to explain more about this dimensional war to Yuya, in the hopes that Yuya can succeed where he failed in stopping the Fusion forces.
Yuto isn’t the most exciting or memorable companion, but I think he’s ultimately one of the ones that was best integrated within his franchise. From his original role as an uneasy antagonist to his revival as a spirit companion for Yuya, he consistently helped push the story forward and provide background information on the main conflict as it became important, which helped further to expand the world and the narrative as a whole. While I think all of the Yuya clones in Arc-V ultimately contributed to the story, Yuto was the one who solidified how the series was going to develop.
His Phantom Knights deck is also cool as hell.
Tumblr media
2. Atem/Pharaoh, from Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters
Atem is the spirit of a pharaoh who ruled in ancient Egypt, remembered for stopping a great catastrophe that threatened the future of the entire world. His soul was sealed away in one of the Millennium Items, a set of ancient artifacts that granted great powers to their wielders, and locked away his memories so that they couldn’t be used to threaten the world ever again. Thousands of years later, after his grandfather excavated the Millennium Puzzle, Yugi Moto completed the puzzle, and the pharaoh’s soul was fused into Yugi’s body. Although their relationship was shaky at the beginning as they learned how to handle their shared body, eventually the two were able to work together to help the pharaoh recover his memories and pass on to the next life.
Atem, the OG companion and (in)arguably a more relevant character than Yugi after the first season. While in some ways he stole the spotlight whenever arcs weren’t directly centered on the pharaoh, his mysterious connection to the game of Duel Monsters and the expansive world of Yu-Gi-Oh! was interesting to watch develop and grow over the series. He definitely has the best rapport with his series’ cast, and I like the way the relationship between Atem and Yugi was built up, all the way to the end. The original series was really well connected, and the bond between Atem and Yugi was a big part of that.
Tumblr media
1. Ai, from Yu-Gi-Oh! VRAINS
Ai is an Ignis-class artificial intelligence, meaning that he has free will, and he lived along with other Ignis AIs in a digital world called the Cyverse. After a shadow organization known as the Knights of Hanoi tried to capture the Cyverse and its power, Ignis was able to steal information from the Cyverse and hide its data within his AI body. Since then, he’s been hunted by the Knights of Hanoi, as well as SOL Technologies, a company that had used the Cyverse to power its virtual reality Duel Monsters program, VRAINS. After a widescale attack on VRAINS by the Knights of Hanoi, the hacker protagonist of the series Yusaku Fujiki was able to capture Ai, only knowing that he would act as a trump card during his fights against the Knights of Hanoi. So begins the shaky friendship of Yusaku and Ai.
I guess this is a little unfair since the series isn’t over, and the true nature of this character has yet to be revealed, and he’s an AI, but Ai has been the only source of whimsy in a series that otherwise lacks it. VRAINS is a very self-serious series with some heavy themes and crushing implications within its narrative, and Ai plays an important role to help keep the series fun with his flippant attitude, providing some well-timed bits of comedy. He’s very much the comic to Yusaku’s straight man, creating this fun dynamic between the two of them, both in and out of duels. Ai is definitely the most like a mascot of any character in this list, as a lot of his interaction with the world is through exaggerated reactions and mischief that Yu-Gi-Oh! as a franchise has never really leaned into. I also think even the way he interacts with Yusaku within duels is interesting, since granting Playmaker the ability to pull new cards from raw data storms helps keep the main character’s deck fresh and exciting from duel to duel.

Heart of the Cards: a Thomas Arclight Oneshot
Thomas couldn’t believe it at first, but after weeks of practice, he had become one of the two finalists in the National Duel Circuit. And right now he was in the waiting room, figuring out which strategies to use.
His opponent was a duelist by the name of Reginald Kastle, and according to previous duels he witnessed, Reginald specialized in sea creature monsters, especially with his ace monster Big Jaws. He had to make sure to counter that monster, but how?
Suddenly, Thomas remembered an envelope his older brother Chris gave him right before the tournament finals. He took the envelope out of his vest and looked at it. Sure enough, it was addressed to him. He opened it and took out a letter.
To Thomas Arclight,
By the time you have received this letter, you have already grown up into a fine young man. I’m writing these letters to you and your brothers because I know you’re going to have amazing futures.
As I’m writing this, you are only three years old, still an innocent young child. But having innocence isn’t a bad thing. Cherish it, and never forget to be kind to others, even those who don’t deserve it at first.
I have already planned to have all of my dueling cards go to a dueling museum for display purposes, but I have made an exception for only one card. It’s enclosed in this envelope. Use this card for your future duels. It will be as if a part of my heart is in your deck.
You have amazing potential, dearest great-grandson. I know you’re capable of great things. Never waste your talents, and always remember to believe in the Heart of the Cards.
Love, Your great-grandfather, Yugi Moto
Thomas set the letter down on the table and looked in the envelope. Sure enough, there was a single card in there. He took it out. It looked old and a bit worn out, but he knew the emotional significance of this card.
“You believed in me all those years ago,” Thomas said quietly, speaking to the card. “But why-”
“You disappoint me, Thomas Arclight.”
Thomas felt tears coming from his eyes. He vowed to restore the Moto family legacy, but what he did to Rio…
He knew he could never forgive himself for that accident, especially with the scar on his face, a constant reminder that he brought shame to his family name that day.
Thomas quickly wiped the tears away. “Don’t worry, Great-Grandpa,” he quietly said as he shuffled the card into his deck. “I won’t let you down.”
Thomas was in a tough spot. He was down to his last few life points and Reginald had already brought out his Big Jaws. Worse, the only monster he had on the field was his Wretched Ghost of the Attic, which he was able to narrowly save thanks to his Mirror Force card. And with his only other available monster being Gravekeeper’s Descendant, it seemed he was going to lose.
“I got this,” Reginald said, gasping for breath. “Just one more turn…”
Thomas was too scared to even draw a card. Even though he was using a duel disk, it felt like the deck was moving away from him.
“Come on, Quattro!” Michael called out from the audience, using Thomas’ current stage name.
Thomas closed his eyes and readied to draw his final card. “Heart of the Cards…” he muttered under his breath. “Guide me.”
“What are you blabbering about?!” Reginald asked, getting impatient. “Draw already!”
Without opening his eyes, Thomas drew a card from his deck. He opened his eyes, and a huge smile appeared on his face. “It worked…” He started laughing in pure delight. “It actually worked!”
“What worked?!” Reginald asked.
“I drew the right card,” Thomas explained. He placed it on his duel disk.
Suddenly, a tall black box materialized around Wretched Ghost of the Attic. “Wh-What’s going on?!” Reginald asked, confused.
“Just a spell card called Mystic Box, courtesy of my great-grandfather,” Thomas explained as swords were stabbed into the box. “It’s going to be the card I’ll use to win this duel.”
“By sending your own monster to the graveyard?” Reginald asked. “That doesn’t seem like a smart move.”
“Think again,” Thomas said. Sure enough, another black box materialized around Big Jaws. “My tough little puffball wants to perform a little magic trick, but he needs an assistant. So I’ll let him borrow your Big Jaws.”
The first black box opened, revealing Big Jaws stabbed by numerous swords. “Big Jaws!” Reginald exclaimed, starting to get nervous.
“Oh, and as for the second box…” Thomas continued. He snapped his fingers, revealing his Wretched Ghost of the Attic. “My monster is completely unharmed.”
“Yeah, but you forgot one other detail,” Reginald said. “Now you’re completely defenseless.”
“Not exactly,” Thomas said. He proceeded to finish his main phase. “I play Gravekeeper’s Descendant, and I’ll boost his attack with Book of Secret Arts. Now Gravekeeper’s Descendant, finish this duel!”
With a bright flash of light, Gravekeeper’s Descendant attacked Wretched Ghost of the Attic, wiping out all of Reginald’s remaining life points. But the poor guy was freaked out for another reason.
“Mystic Box was printed out of circulation years ago,” Reginald said. “So how…” Then his eyes widened. “Y-Y-You’re…”
Thomas smirked. “I guess you learned not to mess with the Prince of Games,” he bragged.
“Yeah!” Michael cheered.
Chris, on the other hand, was more horrified, noticing that everyone else who was watching the duel was starting to realize why Thomas had called himself the ‘Prince of Games’, and that this duel was televised all over the world. “Trey, do you realize what our brother has done?”
Michael finally noticed that the crowd getting more and more delighted by the subtle reveal. “Oh dear…”
The next day, the Arclight brothers had to lock all the doors and windows of their home. “I hope you’re happy with your little stunt, Quattro,” Byron said, sounding a bit irritated. “Thanks to you, we can’t leave this house without people bombarding us! It’s going to take weeks for this whole mess to calm down!”
“I was caught up in the moment,” Thomas explained. “I won the duel thanks to Great-Grandpa Yugi’s card. Didn’t you want me to win?”
“Yes, as it was part of my plan,” Byron said.
“So there,” Thomas said.
“Well, alright,” Byron said. “But you better not screw up next time!”
“Duh,” Thomas said, rolling his eyes in annoyance. But he didn’t like this revenge plan. He would remain true to his great-grandfather’s message and carry out his legacy, even if that meant going against Byron’s plans.
The End

Regardless of the way you value it, this one stays one of the vital valuable trading cards of all time. What occurs when a fictitious recreation within a a lot-loved Japanese manga spawns a real world card recreation that becomes nearly as culturally essential because the manga that began it? Yugioh but not duel masters = garbage not even fit for wasting time.
Yugi had to use real strategy and wits to win, Yusei and Yuma would topdeck cards good for that scenario, however this man is more OP than the entire protagonists to date... Legend has it five thousand years ago, ancient Egyptian Pharaohs used to play a magical recreation very similar to Duel Monsters. The stakes of every recreation are typically high, as characters compete to guard their associates, assist their loved ones, or decide the fate of the world! Is an thrilling universe based on a card game performed with Monsters, Spells, and Traps. Andraursuta -Gi-Oh is a good anime / manga series when you look over lame stereotypes and give it a chance. Many individuals call it childish, but if they would watch the original or learn the manga, it's much darker.
