Unable to avoid the discussion of her “pregnancy” forever, Lina ends up stuck getting @sagetomashardy‘s stance on the matter as he tries to convince her how dangerous keeping her baby would be.
tw mentions of abortion
It seemed like every day Emre was telling her to go talk to Tomas, go see Tomas, why haven't you gone to Tomas yet? At some point Lina felt like she might snap, instead of giving him the usual excuse of being nervous about talking about this. She could only use that excuse for so long, but she would milk it for as long as she could.
So hers and Alex's place was like her little hiding hole. Being such close proximity to the farm she didn't want to leave too often in case she had to run into Tomas because knowing her luck the moment she stepped out of her hut he would be walking by. Emre must have said something about it by now, honestly she was surprised he didn't drag Tomas over for a house call. But that thought wasn't too far off as she heard the sound of Tomas' voice approaching along with a much higher pitched voice that she had to assume was his baby.
So Lina picked herself up from lounging on her bed and walked over to the door, timing her exit when it sounded like his voice was close enough to her place. "Oh, wow what a coincidence you're here." She said once she swung the door open for him, trying to sound impressed by their timing. "I was just on my way to see you."
︶꒦꒷♡꒷꒦︶
"Were you, now." Tomas didn't doubt Lina, exactly; or at least he didn't doubt her in general, as a person. He had no real reason to think that she would lie to anybody, but the fact that she hadn't sought out medical attention in her condition, well. That spoke volumes.
Not that he blamed her, with what she was facing. "You know Flora, don't you?" Tomas asked, hefting the baby in his arms so she could turn and look at Lina. "She's getting big now but I think you might. From before we got here to South Beach, and my wi--" Tomas bit the word off, his stomach turning over. "Libby and I found her and took her in." How much did Lina remember from what her dupe did? Was it even worth Tomas bringing it up to remind her? And what would he even say--
Hey, d'you remember how your dupe did her best to make me feel like I'm attractive when I've never felt less wanted?
Yeah, that would go over great, not awkward at all. Flora peered at Lina and made three beeps before demanding to be put down, which Tomas obeyed, watching her imperiously start to explore the house. "So. I think we both know what you were coming to see me for."
︶꒦꒷♡꒷꒦︶
"Oh, yeah, for sure." Lina confirmed with a nod. He didn't need to be nosey about it. Lina was sure she could play up with exhausted, worried and stressed out new mother if he felt like the way she avoided seeking help was a little bit suspicious. She wasn't sure how the proper way to react to all of this was, and she could argue there was no proper way because everyone was different. Just because she said she was planning on keeping the baby didn't mean she couldn't also be terrified about hearing the procedures.
But now she probably couldn't escape the talk with Tomas there. Thankfully, the baby in his arms, Flora was a good buffer. "Right. Yeah, I remember her. Not like I was really close with the parents but kind of hard to forget when a baby is born around here." It felt like her and Flora were having a bit of a staring match as Tomas held her, like the two of them were trying to understand each other. As her way of calling a truce, Lina reached out and booped Flora's little nose before looking back at Tomas.
"I'm sure...Emre already told you what happened. We already talked to Nesh about it and Emre loves to mention how you're riddled with horror stories on the subject so, sorry if going to see you has been a little easy to push back."
︶꒦꒷♡꒷꒦︶
"No," Tomas said after a moment of being flabbergasted, "it's not like you can forget how babies get born around here." He watched as Lina tapped Flora's nose, cool as a cucumber,  before Tomas put the toddler down and she went off her own way. Either Lina hadn't been aware of the issues concerning childbirth on the island, despite the no doubt tense atmosphere surrounding the arrival of baby Flora into the world, or she ... she what? Thought things would go easily for her?
"Riddled with--" Tomas began to repeat after Lina gave her opinion on the matter, then made a frustrated sound. "Listen! If Emre told you anything regarding what I know about island pregnancies, and if you listened to even a quarter of it, you'd be shaking in your boots, missy." He frowned deeply at her, regarding her midsection with a considering look. "You can't be very far along. That means that you have options, Lina." Tomas met her eyes, holding her gaze. "I don't know if Emre told you that part. Or if Dr. Nanku would've offered it."
︶꒦꒷♡꒷꒦︶
Lina watched the way Tomas got all worked up about her responses. She probably would have enjoyed this stern attitude if it weren't for the fact that it was in regards to her supposed pregnancy. Even if Tomas had any sort of attraction to her, she couldn't imagine he'd find this an appropriate time to do anything about it. So she crossed her arms and sat herself down while he went on with his suggestion of her having options that may not have been presented to her.
"Well sure but what's more dangerous around here? Having the baby or getting rid of it? Because I can't imagine an abortion is the safest option in this circumstance." She gladly would have taken it as an option if she didn't back herself into this corner. Part of her wondered if Nesh would be able to lie on her behalf, but it seemed unlikely and she couldn't bring herself to tell him the truth. "Neither of them told me much, they were more focused on their pissing contest. But I have a feeling that my options are limited and both are risky."
She leaned her head back in exasperation, glancing over to see Flora's exploration resulted in her finding some of Lina's clothes to play with. "Hey munchkin, those clothes are way too big for you." She said, attempting her best 'cool aunt' voice, hoping the toddler didn't start putting things in her mouth. "What would you suggest I do then? Because I'm just trying to go with the lesser of two evils here, but if you have a better alternative, I'm all ears."
︶꒦꒷♡꒷꒦︶
"Having the baby! Having the baby is very much more dangerous than aborting it!" Tomas was aghast. When Iyaz had arrived on the island he'd taken over all of the contraceptive talks (well, Tomas had forced him to, but who was counting?) but there were obviously gaps in island education. What with Lina being from South Beach and all. "Look, Lina -- I'm not saying this lightly. I know it's a big decision. But it's the safer choice when it comes down to it. You don't want to know all the complications that childbirth involves, in a proper hospital much less here. Even with a proper doctor to deliver."
Lina looked exasperated, and Tomas was frustrated. She obviously could get laid whenever she felt like it and from what he'd heard on the outskirts of island gossip, wasn't parsimonious with her favours; why was this such a new issue for her? Surely she'd been versed on the contraceptive tea up till now. He frowned, ignoring whatever Flora was getting into to train his attention all on Lina, crossing his arms along with the scowl.
"I suggest you tell me why you slipped up with the tea," Tomas said. "I severely doubt that you'd be that careless. You're..." he paused, pressing his lips together for a moment before confessing, "your dupe came on to me. I didn't realize it wasn't you until all the tree-trapped people got found. And if I wasn't very much in love with my wife, I would've screwed her in a heartbeat." He shrugged one shoulder. "You're a beautiful girl, Lina, you don't need me to tell you that. And I don't think you've lacked for company when you want it. So tell me the truth."
Tomas reached forward, catching her chin in his hand tightly. "Did you get pregnant on purpose?"
︶꒦꒷♡꒷꒦︶
Lina had completely been making assumptions about what option would be worse. She mostly considered how unlikely it was for them to be able to do a safe and proper abortion around here. And then if she really was pregnant, that would easily be two lives lost. She had to try and think about it from a motherly point of view and not as someone who was faking a pregnancy. "Well I don't know okay! I've never had to go through this before and I'd probably be able to properly understand things if everyone wasn't choosing to yell at me about it."
When he held her face in his hand, locking his stern gaze on her, she assumed he was completely onto her about lying. Lina was prepared for him to say outright she was faking until he opened his mouth and asked if she got pregnant on purpose. He still thought she was up to something but hadn't caught on just yet. "No! Of course not! I didn't–this was an accident. I don't have sex every day so I don't drink the tea every day. But sometimes Emre would come around to drag me away somewhere for a quicky and I guess this one time I got so wrapped up in it I forgot to mention I didn't drink it, he forgot to ask and he fucked me so good that taking it after we were done slipped my mind. And I've had enough experience off the island to not expect to get knocked up from the one time we don't use protection."
She didn't bother pulling away from his grasp, waiting for him to let go of her when he wanted to. "Why would I even do something like this on purpose? I understand it's risky, I'm trying to be chill and cool about it but maybe I am scared about making the wrong decision and things going wrong. I just...I don't know what to do." She finished quietly, her eyes mirroring something akin to fear at all of this. "And both doctors yelling at me isn't exactly helping, the only person who has been helping is Emre. So could you not make me feel shittier than I already do for like, five minutes?"
︶꒦꒷♡꒷꒦︶
"Oh, don't give me that." Tomas had thought he'd be more gentle about this, all cotton-wool-wrapped and carefully-presented ideas and options to a young woman who'd found herself in a predicament, but the more he spoke to Lina the more agitated he was getting. "There's no way you can be this unprepared for what's happening. You don't have to have gone through having a baby to know the broad strokes on what it entails and--"
--and it wasn't like she didn't have a point. Tomas furrowed his brow, blinking at her in consternation as he thought about it. "You're right, though, I shouldn't yell at you. That's not likely to help any, is it." How deep should he go with this, exactly? Once she said that it had entirely been an accidental pregnancy, she hadn't decided to do this without (what Tomas considered) a measured and invested conversation about having a baby beforehand, he at least could shut down that avenue of concern. He grimaced reflexively when Lina laid the blame squarely at Emre's feet, not liking that much either, but again: not helpful to be judgmental. Not at this point in the proceedings. "Getting your brains fucked out isn't a reason to neglect contraception."
Okay, so it was harder than it seemed to keep from scolding her. Tomas kept hold of Lina's chin, just adjusting his grip so he was cupping her face rather than cinching her immobile. "You shouldn't be chill or cool about it. You should listen to me and to Doctor Nanku. And if I'm making you feel shitty, Lina, it's because I know exactly what you're facing when it comes to having a baby here and it's not good. It's not good at all. I think you should think seriously about ..." Tomas couldn't say it, abortion, hearing Flora in the next room giggling froggily to herself about something. "I think you should choose the other option. Terminating it." Less direct but no less firm.
︶꒦꒷♡꒷꒦︶
Lina could see that playing this completely dumb wasn't enough for Tomas to settle in. He was too smart for that, and wasn't easily distracted either. But at least there was a pause at her argument about being yelled at, but the problem was, regardless of what he said and how he articulated it, it wouldn't mean anything to her. There were no actual stakes, nothing as serious as the death of her and her baby. Her only concern was making sure he didn't doubt her.
"Not particularly no. I've never responded well to yelling in situations like this." She was going to make a comment but had to refrain in case it made him more annoyed with her than he already was. Bringing his sex life into this wouldn't make things better. "I'll make sure to keep it in mind next time someone fucks my brains out."
Tomas stood firm in his opinion on the matter, that not carrying a baby would be a lot safer than doing so. And it was such an easy way out, if there was any way to actually get rid of a baby that didn't exist without everyone realizing that it didn't exist. Lina placed her hands over her stomach, as if there was something there to comfort, trying to think of what would be the best response to placate Tomas but also not put her in a situation that might get her caught. "I hear you, but it's a big decision. I mean its not guaranteed that terminating it goes well for me either, right? And I'm gonna be honest, Emre seemed to be ready to go into parent mode when I told him, which I did not expect. So as much as it's my body, my choice and all that, I also think it's fair to talk to him about it, see what he wants." She wasn't sure if it sounded sweet or stupid but she could work with whatever Tomas took it as.
"But theoretically, say we do end up wanting to keep it." Because then she could sit and wait til she came up with a solution to her lie.  "What then?"
︶꒦꒷♡꒷꒦︶
"Terminating it is your best shot. I wouldn't say that lightly, Lina. Believe me." At least the girl was listening, now; Tomas had been getting the perplexing sense that she'd been more lost in her own rumination before and not particularly grasping the weight of what he was trying to get across. "I'm a parent, and my wife and I lost pregnancies. It's not easy. It can mess you up. But trying to carry a baby to term here and then giving birth? That's --"
He didn't want to think about Emre. Who was certain to want this, Tomas was sure; who'd be struggling with all the horror stories that Tomas had spilled out of his hands at the slightest provocation versus the huge, ragged, baby-brother-shaped hole in himself. It really wasn't fair. Emre would make an incredible father. He practically already had.
"It's a death sentence," Tomas finished, somewhere intermingled with Lina's decision that she needed to consult the father. "I can't say it any more plainly than that. But you're right, it's not my choice."
He skidded the heel of his hand up across his face, looking over at Flora, who'd discovered some kind of woven basket with a few sweet potatoes in it and had curled up in it to make friends with them. "If you want to keep your baby," he rephrased ponderously, to give it more weight, "then you have to visit the doctor regularly. Follow his every instruction. If he doesn't have time, then I'll do it. You'll have to adjust your diet and your daily habits. You'll have to stick to the beach here where it's populated and safe. If anything screwy happens -- like it does -- you'll have to be protected. A priority."
︶꒦꒷♡꒷꒦︶
Lina nodded as she listened to Tomas, wanting to look understanding and sympathetic to the truths he was sharing about his own experiences. "I'm sorry to hear that. I can see why this is important to you. I promise I'll take it all into consideration." Or at least use it to her advantage somehow. A sob story to make Emre rethink his desire to be a parent around here. Though if all the mention of death didn't deter him, what the hell would?
She knew she would have been scared if she actually had anything to worry about. This wouldn't even be a debate if she was pregnant, but she had a lie to drag out, she had to consider the best course of action. Like what the hell was she gonna do when she didn't start showing? There were getting to be too many eyes on her now, which, on one hand she was totally fine with, but on the other, this isn't what she wanted people paying attention to her for. "Maybe but...clearly it's worked out at least once." She commented as she gestured over to the baby touching everything in the place like it was her own.
"But I don't want to argue. I wanted opinions and options and...you're being very helpful by giving me your thoughts. So thank you." Lina could work with scheduled alone time with Nesh, he would be easier to distract than Tomas, who would probably be poking and prodding and asking far too many questions that Lina wouldn't have the answers to. "Understood. It's a big change, a lot to accommodate for. I'll talk to Emre about it and we'll make an executive decision and...go from there. I know it's very serious business so I'll do my best not to take any of this lightly anymore."
︶꒦꒷♡꒷꒦︶
The shift in her attitude was palpable and Tomas felt himself ... not exactly relax, but at least be mollified by Lina stating out loud that she was more aware now about what she was facing. All of the dangers and troubles and intricacies.
"I don't want to argue either," he said, going over to collect Flora out of the basket. She protested but Tomas took one of the sweet potatoes to give her to keep her occupied, presuming that Lina could just hop down to the farm and get another if she wanted it. "I just needed you to know. How hard -- how dangerous this will be for you, if you decide to carry the child to term." He was heading for the door, but he lingered for a moment at it, not quite looking at Lina.
"Don't hold back," he said. "When you're talking to Emre. Don't reassure him that you and the infant will live through this, don't tell him that you want to try. Don't encourage him in any way. He'll..." Tomas shook his head. "Let me know what you decide."
He left it at that, stepping out into the sunshine with his own baby, who'd lived.
END.

There was still so much frustration, confusion, and overwhelming need to put it all somewhere. Jupiter suggested she take it out on Tamyra (without knowing it was her she was talking about) but it was getting harder to look at her and feel the need to shout or dump all the blame on her. Because she knew how sex worked and it wasn’t all Tamyra’s fault. But without the catharsis of fighting with her parents and hearing her dad’s side of the story, how else was she meant to deal with all of this stress?
Wren had been working on the farm, tending to the animals, at least keeping up with her duties as some form of distraction for it all. Until she remembered the conversation she had with Tomas when she agreed to take on this position. The clear disdain for her mother, his belief that her relationship with Matthew would have turned her into one of his fanatics, Tomas had been on this island for about as long as her parents had been, he must have known more. What else was there that she had been oblivious to?
She left the pen to go find Tomas, hoping that he wasn’t too busy for this and would be in a state to be able to share anything else he could remember about her parents. “Hey, you got a minute? I want to talk about something.”

Mk 1 men reacting to someone insulting their s/o right in front of them? Aka how to commit suicide in 12+ different ways
Tumblr media
Reiko would not tolerate any slander to his partner and would instantly get up in the face of the person who dare insult you
He doesn't do the pleasures himself. Instead he advises you to beat them into submission while he watches with a coy smirk
Tumblr media
Is very offended and doesn't sit idle when he hears it. He'll move past you tell them to try repeating that again
He's threatening but only in body posture and and facial expressions. If they were to throw a punch his way, he'd catch it and headbutt them
Tumblr media
He's upset at what he hears and feels like lashing out towards the one who insulted you
Syzoth regains his composure and instead comes to your side and gives you a compliment and tells you not to listen to fools who like to bark like dogs
Tumblr media
He laughs, maniacal and wicked. He tells them, through chocked laughter to repeat what they said
Once they do, he laughs some more before beginning to viciously beat them to death, screaming at them to never insult you again
Tumblr media
Raises a brow and asks them to try and say that again because they must not be talking to you, his perfect partner
Trips them with his staff before spitting on them and leading you away with a caring smile
Tumblr media
Hums a laugh, while looking them up and down. He claps his hands telling them that was a good attempt at an insult but Shang Tsung will show them real hurt
Absolutely eats them alive with his words. Tearing them apart and absolutely destroying all their confidence with just his words alone
Tumblr media
Sneers toward the one who insulted you and walks over to them slowly. He looks up them up and down very quietly
His hand finds their neck and he squeezes tightly until they can no longer breathe before dropping them to floor
Tumblr media
Gets up in the person's face and begins telling them to say that again and more than that while he begins to back them into a corner
He corners them and threatens them. Tomas tells them if they dare say another word, he'll have them choking on their tongue
Tumblr media
Raiden tries to defuse the situation and is then insulted too. He doesn't mind, he simply nods his head
But then he quips back with something witty which angers them and they go to hit him but Raiden is too quick and dodges it before easily subduing them
Tumblr media
Isn't one to stand idle after hearing someone insult you. He calls out to them, calling them an asshole before pushing them
Kung Lao begins threatening them and says if they're gonna try and be a tough guy then try to be one with him and see what happens
Tumblr media
Absolutely furious. He can't hope to contain his rage and he's grabbing them by the collar and shoving them against the wall
He lashes out at them with his words and nearly crushes their throat but he sees you from the corner of his eye and you look scared. Bi-Han stops then, dropping them to the floor and rushing over to you before the two of you depart
Tumblr media
Asks if he heard thar right and wraps on arm around their shoulder. He shakes his head and gives them a hardy slap on the back
Johnny offers some "friendly" advice by saying that if they dare say anything like that again, they'll have no more teeth left to talk with
Tumblr media
Any insult given to you is an insult to him. Shao does not take kindly to insults
He doesn't say a word to them, merely crushing their head with his large hand before returning to your side as if nothing happened
Tumblr media
Furrows his brows. He wants to get you out of that situation as quick as possible He leads you away from that person.
When the person who insulted you tries to follow, Geras is quick to freeze them in time and break their nose before continuing on his way with you
Tumblr media
Tells them it is unwise to insult the lover of someone powerful and when they laugh in Liu Kang's face he sighs
He had hoped for a peaceful ending but it seems that not an option. He sharply kicks them straight in the gut, sending them colliding into the wall
Tumblr media
His heart hurts knowing someone has disrespected you. Kuai Liang gets between the two of you and stares them down
Tells them if they are looking for a fight, they'll find one quickly and that it will not end well. Flames will engulf his fist as a show of power
Tumblr media
Baraka has had many insults thrown at him but hearing one being thrown at you? He will not tolerate that
He grabs them by their shirt and begins threatening to turn them into minced meat if they dare insult you again

048. Sunset
♡ Pairing - Vash x Reader
♡ Word count - 0.8k
♡ Warnings - mention of having future children? Very brief.
Part of the 150 Bullets drabble series on AO3
Tumblr media
It’s been a slow traveling day. Not enough double dollars between the two of you to rent a tomas, so you’re left with the two feet you’re born with to get you to the next city.
The worst of the heat is over; the suns are dipping toward the horizon. Here, on one of the numberless sand dunes on No Man’s Land do you stop for a break, a drink of water. And here, while Vash puts the water away and hands you a pack of nuts for snacking, do you stare with a fond longing at a farm.
“When we get old,” you say, because there’s always going to be a ‘we’ with you two; to be together ‘til the stars burn out, “we should get a house like that.” You turn to him with a glint in your eye. “One with a wraparound porch. Lots of space.”
Vash straightens slowly from his sack and looks off at the distant farmhouse, with its small greenhouse domes and tracts of brushed sand. The suns are setting to the west. Everything is bathed in amber, and he squints against the shine of reflecting light through his glasses. It’s small, as far as farms go. Most are these days. With Plants growing healthier and technology being leaked slowly from Home, farms don’t have to settle as close to cities to survive. A sand tractor kicks up dust in the distance, the farmer prepping the ground for hardy plant life meant for deserts.
He feels a smile grow on his lips. A brow raising slowly, he gives you a playful look. “You want to sweep all the sand off the deck all day? ‘Cause that’s what will happen if we get that porch.” He hefts his pack on his shoulder and starts walking again. He knows you’ll follow.
And you do, feet steady on the sand. “Ah, you’re right,” you open the bag of nuts and pop a few in your mouth, savoring the one cranberry in the bunch, “But wouldn’t it be nice to watch the sunrise and sunset after a long day? Just sitting in some rocking chairs. Or one of those hanging benches!”
Vash hums, looking at the farmhouse again. “We could hang up some string lights around it. Have a little space off to the side for a firepit. Roast marshmallows and eat s’mores.”
You grin. “We’d have to have a workshop somewhere, for your arm and whatever else you want to build.”
He glances over his shoulder and gives you that charming smile. “I could build you some bookcases. Have our own library inside somewhere.”
“We’d need one with all the journals we have between us.”
Vash laughs in agreement, then pauses at the crux of the dune. The tractor moves along. He looks at the farmhouse now as if it is your own. “We’d have a master bedroom, and at least three guest bedrooms. For when friends come by for a visit.” He points. "Right there."
You stand by his side. Brushing his hand, you smile at him when he looks down. “There’d be lots of them. We might even have to add a second wing, especially when holidays roll around. Maybe some of them would move in for a bit, then they’d go off to start their own businesses, or their own families.”
“Now it’s starting to sound more like a bed and breakfast place. Or a hotel.”
“Or our own farm! With hired hands that can work the land with us, learn how to care for the Plant we get.”
He gives you a look. “You wouldn’t mind all the people?”
You purse your lips, then shake your head. “I know people’s more your thing, but I think they’d become like family eventually.” You give him a wink and bump his arm with your shoulder. “I’d do it for you.”
And a breath leaves in a slow rush from his lips. He's overcome. You’re golden in the sunset’s light. Beautiful. The perfect match for him. Vash often wonders, if there is a God, if He looked down on his pitiful state and said, ‘Alright, just this once,’ when he sent you. “Maybe…” he swallows and voices the imperfect little hope he has that can never be true, “…we’d have some room for the kids, too.” He looks down shyly, and is grateful for the hood of his coat obscuring his sight a bit.
Your smile only grows, and you hold his hand, leaning into his arm. “…Maybe.” You grin when his ears go red.
A solemn, bittersweet feeling overcomes him, even as he brings you close to hold you. He knows this is all wishful thinking. Two lovers hoping for a better, calmer future together. Something to get you both through the next day. There's a Plant to the east calling out, and he needs to answer it. But he still hopes, staring at that distant farmhouse, that it could come true someday. Somehow, someway, you’d both settle down. Have your own place. Your own family.
He sees a lone figure come out of the house, followed by a smaller one – a child – and his breath leaves him.
You both watch the waning sunset over the house and hope for a brighter tomorrow to find you soon.

Things to know !
Fem! Readers- While requesting is fun, there are some things you need to know before putting one in. I only really feel comfy writing Fem! Readers because I am not quite experienced in writing anything else. But if you are not a Fem! reader, that is perfectly fine! I'm not stopping anyone from reading my work, everyone is welcome :)
Patients - Please be patient when you request something :/ I know for a fact as soon as someone requests something, I'm not gonna finish their request in a matter of 2.7 seconds (I wish I had that power). Im busy with my personal stuff and so are other writers!
In General - I write every genre because I really don't care. I use to write fan-fics when I was younger and I wanted to see if my astronomical , prodigious , voluminous , colossal writing abilities were still there. Request anything :) If I don't respond to your request (because I either don't want to do it or I'm not comfortable doing it) then don't ask it again.

Prompt 2: Stampede Earning the Nickname   There was a time before infamy for Vash – a time for first crimes.  He'd come to stay in small towns during his early days wandering the sandy planet in his searches for Nai and seeing to the welfare of his sisters, who would call to him in his dreams.  Tomas were invaluable friends then, pack animals and mounts that were the hardiest of hardy creatures, save perhaps the worms, but far friendlier to humans and human-like Plants.  They had been brought over from old Earth, stored as embryos and Vash was never certain if they were bred down from something called an “emu” (which had apparently won an actual war that humans had waged on them once in the wilds of their own territory), if they were genetic-constructs with origins similar to Plants or if they were a project to bring back some extinct species, some kind of “elephant bird” that Rem had once told him about and that he couldn’t wrap his head around imagining.  In any case, Brad back Home had showed him how to care for them.  You had to keep your mount happy if you had any chance of coming back Home from a trip to the desert, after all.  It wasn’t very long before the survivors of the Big Fall started using their valuable steed-birds for other purposes.  Eggs as a food source were, of course, a given.  Meat followed afterward.  While Vash could never imagine eating his own mounts, he understood the survival needs of the population.  It also, he hated to admit, took some pressure of the Plants to have livestock around.  It took him a bit longer to take to eating toma-meat himself, but when he did, he found that he’d liked it.  It could be dried rock-hard into something that could be taken off a fossilized chunk in slivers and made for a good long-term, long-distance ration that was surprisingly filling for how little one could flake off with a knife at a time.  Regardless of knowing what these cute, big goofy birds tasted like, Vash could not stand to see them in any kind of ill-treatment.  Even birds doomed to slaughter deserved to be fed and watered in the meantime.  So, when a young Vash, one who was not yet the subject of pursuits and wanted posters came upon a small ranching town where he saw a pen of toma panting and swaying, rolling and suffering in the dust from thirst-induced bloat and inquired about empty troughs and got an answer from a farm owner that it just didn’t matter if the birds were watered because they weren’t long for this world, anyway – “We’ll just take the fresh ones and any that die in the pen can be used for leather,” well, that didn’t quite sit well with Vash.  The town had a Plant-source reservoir not an isle away.  He took out his big gun and blew off the locks on the main gate.  “Oops, looks like your fence is broken!”  “Why you!”  Seeing freedom and smelling water, the toma flowed as one.  The ground shook and people dove for doorways or looked out of windows at the dust and covered their ears for all the squawking.  After the creatures had made their way to the reservoir and drunk their fill, none of the resident ranchers were able to round up a single one.  The place became known for its population of wily feral tomas that lived among the canyon rocks and the scant flora scrub eating small worms and stealing garbage.  The town was renamed from something forgotten to Big Bird Gulch.  There was a war fought against them to try to rein them in, but in the end, like their ancestors before them, the toma won.  They retained their right to live and to continue to be a local nuisance.  In exchange for all of the loud nighttime trash-scavenging outside the homes, businesses, bars and brothels, they became quite a tourist-attraction.  Artists in the town painted pictures and made little clay sculptures that sold well as souvenirs. People from all around brought money into Big Bird Gulch going on tours around the scrub in hopes of catching a glimpse of one of the world’s only “wild toma.”    And a young man named Vash became Vash the Stampede ever since.

Vash had to admit, he was beyond concerned at this point for your well-being and not his usual ‘lack of concern for yourself doing stupid things’ either. No this time he’d woken up one morning in the desert to see you curled into a ball shivering inside your sleeping bag and tucked into his side, drenched in sweat and a fever. That had been a week ago.
He’d quickly packed up camp and ran to the next town that as much as he knew you would have protested at being brought to one, did not have a doctor, which meant you wouldn’t be trying to fight him every step of the way. Now you were at the point where he could see you were visibly losing weight from being unable to keep anything down, even too much water at once was purged from your system. He knew you were hardy, but even you had your limits, your most recent temperature check having come in at 103 degrees Fahrenheit. This so far had been far worse than the infection incident, where the town doctor had hooked you up to an IV and you’d recovered. He knew now that as much as you needed the help if you woke up in a hospital or clinic again, it’d be another step back in your relationship for you. He knew your fears of being treated like a test subject and he couldn’t blame you, not after having a fever like this for almost a week. So at his wit's end, he started scouring the radio for news of a particular sandstorm.
Once he’d found it and the close proximity to his location he was wrapping you up to move you, much to the innkeeper's displeasure but he’d been able to smooth that away by stating you needed a doctor and the promise of a traveling doctor coming later in the week was no longer something he could wait for. Not that he was planning to wait anymore, both of your bags attached to the toma saddle and you curled up in your sleeping clothes and a sheet in front of him and he was off.
As soon as he was Home it started “Well look who finally came for a visit. What'da need this time kid?” Brad had been the one to meet him in the bay, and he paled the moment he saw your pale sweaty face. “She’s not doing well.” The back of his wrist pressed to your forehead, an inferno burning beneath your flesh, before helping Vash disentangle you from his hold. Feeling the shudders of your frame in his hold, and labored breathing, he had the first flicker of concern regarding your connection to Vash for the blond to bring you here.
“No, she’s not. I know it’s unexpected but I didn't know where else to turn. Is Luida awake?” Vash was dismounting, leaving both of your bags for now, and the toma saddled. No reason to remove anything before knowing if they could help or not.
“Yea, she is.” Almost as soon as he had both feet on the ground Vash was reaching out for you again, Brad raising an eyebrow in question “She’s a pretty close friend” a partial truth, but Vash didn’t see the harm in avoiding the news the two of you were a couple to what were his oldest friends on the planet. It might confuse the two of them before he could explain a few things “She also has a bit of an issue with strangers and doctors, so I don’t want her waking up and in her condition to start swinging at you. She can have a pretty mean left hook.”
“Not sure how mean it can be, she’s burning up” walking through the ship's hallways, Vash being as gentle as he can in his hurried steps heading towards the infirmary while Brad has gone off to find Luida.
“Almost there, Mayfly. Just don’t be too upset with me later if they can help you.” The only answer you give him is a weak moan, face turning to try and tuck more into his body.
Entering the ship infirmary and setting you down on the first gurney he sees, keeping you wrapped up in the sheet, a broken whimper passes your lips. It makes his stomach churn, watching you like this, a shaking shivering mess. Glancing around he grabs a small padded pillow from one of the other gurneys, tucking it under your head. “I know you’re hurting but hold on, just a bit longer.” Fingers running through your sweat-soaked locks, trying to keep them out of your eyes.
“Vash?” Turning back to the entrance of the infirmary at the sound of his name, Luida hustled in and to his side. Stepping back so she can place her hand on your forehead, feeling the inferno burning under your skin. “Let’s get a set of vitals going on her.”
Luida moves with the expertise of someone in her field, opening and closing drawers pulling what she needs, and attaching them to your body as needed. “Lift her up a little more Vash, I need to get this blood pressure cuff around her arm.” Moving you as asked, his heart clenching at the whine that leaves you.
“The poor thing, how long has she been like this?” her voice soft as she gets the cuff where she wants it, plugging it in, and starting the machine.
“A week” voice neutral Vash doesn’t miss the way Luida whips around to look at him, her eyes wide.
“Vash, she has a fever of 103, and her heart rate is 150. She needed serious medical help days ago.” Exasperation is lacing her tone as she speaks to him, grabbing a small light.
“I know. She’s” a hard swallow as he looks down at you, knowing you’re going to be so angry with him for this. “She’s been experimented on. A lot. She’s terrified of doctors. Luida, I didn’t know what else to do to help her.” His voice cracks as he runs his hand through your hair, pausing as your brow furrows and you shake once more.
He misses the look she sends him, too concerned with watching your face for any further sign of discomfort. A look she’s never seen Vash wear on his visage before, but she knows that look and it warms her heart for the boy she’s known for so long. “We’ll do what we can for her.”
Gaze flicks towards Luida, Vash smiles it’s small, but still, a smile when he catches her eye and sees the look in her eye.
“Looking over her vitals Vash, I’d say she has a flu or similar virus but it shouldn’t have lasted this long.” Luida is pulling more items from around the room, including a needle to take a few tubes for holding blood. “I’d like to run some tests to see if there isn’t something else in her system.”
Seeing the apparatus Vash is running his hand through your hair one more time before adjusting you, pulling your left arm away from your body, and rolling your sleeve up so Luida has easy access. A few finger presses and a rather prominent vein is showing, wrapping a piece of a rubber band above the bend of your elbow. “Hold her steady Vash.”
“I’ve got her” his voice is close to your ear, oblivious to the fact your eyes are moving beneath your eyelids. A sign you're waking up.
Opening your eyes, everything is blurry but you can make out a very familiar mop of blond hair, choosing to focus on Vash to try and get your vision back to normal. As his figure becomes clearer you can see the bags under his eyes, his face somber and you follow his line of sight.
A needle about to pierce your skin.
A needle.
It sends your body into overdrive, legs kicking out and making contact with flesh, elbows flying backward, and a gasp from above you. Rolling to your side, hissing as the pain blooms across your ribs after the shortfall. You think you hear your name being yelled out, but no one knows it. A small voice at the back of your mind tells you Vash knows it, but that voice is drowned out by your panic.
Your whole body is screaming at you, tears falling from your eyes from the added pain, realizing too late you’re tangled up in a sheet. Limbs failing to try and free yourself, rolling into something while you struggle.
Free from the sheet, a hand grasping your shoulder and from the hold you can tell the person is somewhere in front of you. Hand balling into a fist you swing, feeling the contact and hearing a gasp, you must have hit something fleshy. Your fist having connected with Vash’s midsection, spittle flying from his mouth.
“I’m gonna feel that one for a few days” tumbles from his lips, wincing. “Come on Mayfly, I need you to calm down. We need to figure out what’s wrong with you.”
In your haze everything sounds like you’re underwater, unable to make out the words, vision clearing to see Vash on his knees in front of you. Brain pounding in your skull. A cry of pain as your body keeps objecting to moving, panic subsiding enough when you realize you hit Vash.
“Sun-shine” feeling your body slump, everything you’d done too much of a strain on you in your weakened state, flopping to the floor. More tears running down your face, you’d hit Vash, the anguish of knowing you’d struck him causing you to shiver for an entirely different reason.
Wasting no time, Vash dashes forward wrapping his arms around you from behind, using his legs to lock your body in place. Looking at Luida who’s been grabbing a new needle and tubes. “Let’s try this again, I’ve got her.”
Hobbling the older woman drops down beside the two of you, placing the needle in your vein and attaching the first tube. “At least as dehydrated as she is, she has good blood flow.”
Vash can only watch you, releasing his grip once Luida has all that she needs, holding the cotton against your elbow and pulling you up from being sprawled on the floor, body still trembling.
Settling you back against his body, grip tight enough to keep you from slumping forward but loose enough that you can move, body curling up onto itself as you shake back in the grip of your sickness. Whispering how he’s got you in your ear, answered by a whimper and Vash can only hope Luida is ok from being on the receiving end of your kick. “Just stay with me, Mayfly. We’re in the one place that I can promise doesn’t want to see what makes you tick.”
Luida doesn’t miss the press of his lips to the side of your forehead, or how tender his hold on you is. Moving as quickly as she can to get the tests running, even if it will be a few hours before the first few tests are finished.

where: lily’s room, beneath the high house, night @sagetomashardy
Flora had asked when Libby was coming home at dinner that night, again. Lily had let Tomas handle that, getting up to do the dishes instead. When it was time for Flora to go to bed, Lily had wished her a bonne nuit and made sure everything was ready for the morning.
After she’d moved in, Tomas had converted the piano room into Lily’s own room, which was nice. It was still a work in progress, but progress was undoubtedly being made: Tomas had framed the room and part of the walls were up. Lily’s room glowed a faint blue from the lagoon lamps, helping her stay awake as she put her projects away for the night and started unfolding her blankets.
That was all she did these days, it seemed. Stay at the High House, take care of Flora when needed, sleep the day away, stay awake all night, repeat. On rare occasions, with correct amounts of energy, visit one non-Hardy a day for an hour or two, go back home, resume. Lily stared at the ceiling that was the floorboards upstairs, and after a quiet moment pressed the heels of her palms into her eyes.
You have to start being useful again, the thought came. You’re not the princess anymore, you’re losing your touch with the people. Be useful at least, or go into the Labyrinth and save them all the headache. Look for Libby or make yourself useful or stop being so fucking annoying—
She pressed tighter, nails digging furrows into her forehead, but the thought was cut off by the stairs creaking above her. Heavy, certain footsteps. Tomas. Lily didn’t know when she’d learned to recognize his gait.
“Dad?” she asked, and was thankful for the lagoon lamps, because it made him easier to see in the dark. She sat up, lowering her hands to her lap, trying to add some pep to her voice. “Everything okay?”

CHAPTER NINE FINALE
When: June 20, 2022. Where: South Beach.
The buzzing is louder than ever on its tenth day. As if it knows something is coming. Perhaps it does.
Seamus and Esther call for a group gathering on the beach to address the issue as noontime grows near and the noise reaches a nearly ear-splitting level. The sky is cloudless and conversation is difficult over the din.
“It appears that this won’t be stopping any time soon,” Esther begins, raising her voice somewhat to be heard. “Given the circumstances, we’ve begun planning for –”
She doesn’t get the chance to finish that sentence. It’s as if she’s summoned this, as if the sky bursts on itself, a ripple that starts somewhere in the middle of the horizon then extends outward. Like thin fingers that reach across the sky, the lightning stretches overhead at stunning speed, sparks showering down. The buzzing is louder than ever. Some move to shield each other in spite of the memories that it makes you see. Others run.
And then, between one breath and the next, the sky is clear. The air is abruptly, overwhelmingly quiet. Quiet enough for you to hear Seamus’ trembling voice as he asks: “You?”
His gaze is on Esther as they pull away from one another, having collided during the second shock. And shock is what replaces his usual gruffness, widening his eyes, slackening his mouth. “All this time – after everything – it was you?”
Esther stands, frozen, her usually measured expression pinching with dread. “What did you see –” She begins, but Seamus quickly responds.
“You know good and well what I saw. You?!” There is a new bellow to his voice, outrage replacing the numb astonishment now. “After all that he did for us? After all that he did for you? He fuckin’ loved you, and you –”
Before Seamus can get too far into his blustering, Libby steps forward, balancing Flora on her hip. “Seamus, man,” she prompts. “What are you saying?”
“Esther killed Matthew.” There is a heavy finality to his words. The beach is hushed. The buzzing in the air is gone as Seamus turns to his fellow leader. His friend. “He trusted you. I trusted you –”
“I can explain,” Esther begins in a trembling voice. “It was the fog, Seamus, I hardly knew where I was or who I was or who he was –”
“Enough! I don’t want to hear it! You killed him, Esther, and then you lied to us! All of us! To hell with it – to hell with you. Akbar –” He whirls around suddenly with a definitive point at Emre. “You’re out of the Fisher’s Hut. Back to the mainland. You –” Now he’s pointing at Esther. “Get the fuck out of my sight. And you two –” Now it’s the Hardys. “Come with me.”
After more than a year, the truth has emerged: Esther Achebe killed Matthew Alphonsus. What’s more, for better or worse, and without a vote from the people, island leadership has changed hands. A new trio has formed, consisting of Seamus Hayes, Tomas Hardy, and Libby Blum. Esther has not been put to trial. Will she be? Will her hasty sentencing stand? And how will this new leadership fare?
These are the questions that hang in the air on this hot, dry afternoon. Otherwise, it is mercifully silent.
To the muns...
This concludes Chapter Nine: The Shock! While much of the physical island has stayed the same this time around, it seems like dynamics will be changing in the wake of the onslaught of new information revealed during this chapter. I’m intrigued by the potential longterm impacts of this event!
You may take as long as you need to wrap event threads.
During this interlude between chapters, keep your eyes peeled for some plot drops, Meridium news, and tasks, including our third AU event!
Thank you all for joining in on yet another exciting event. I think it’s safe to say that, one way or another, every islander has been truly shocked.
