Day Six: Maa Katyayani

Once there lived a sage called Katyayana who prayed to the goddess to be born as his child in order to kill Mahishasura. She agreed and was born as his daughter and thus was called Katyayani. When the gods invoked Mahashakti – the primordial feminine power to protect them from the demon, Mahisha, she emerged from the sacrificial fire of the sage Katyayan. All the male gods bestowed their special powers and weapons on her. She is the avatara of Parvati in the form of the warrior goddess and is one of the most well-known and beloved of her forms.

Riding a lion, she proceeded towards the Vindhya mountains where the demon lived and killed him. Hence, she is also known as Mahishasuramardini.

Well, right after typing out that sentence👆 I got the answer lol. It's a festival called Navratri (or dussehra or Durga Pooja because hey, polytheism). Reasons:

This falls in sept-oct (depending upon the traditional calendar dates) and that's usually when the first term of school here gets over and there is an extended holiday for about 2 weeks :p As kids we usually looked forward to that haha

The festival itself is so fun, it goes on for 10 whole days. (there's different ways of celebrating it and as far as i know, all of them are unique and special in their own way)

In my family, you get all these clay dolls and arrange them in steps and it's a whole thing oh my god but it's so beautiful

There's also so much food😁

People usually dress children up in the evenings as gods or goddesses or just traditional outfits and i guess as a child i really loved that akfjskg (it's basically cosplay lmao)

You get so many goodies when you visit others' homes😂

I guess i just have so many good memories associated with navratri :D and that's why you are getting this long ass answer you never asked for lmaoo

Navadurga and significance of each day of Navratri

Devi is worshipped in 9 forms known as Navadurga. The significance of each day of Navratri is attached to a form of the Mother Divine.

First Day – Shailaputri

On the first day, Devi Shailaputri is worshipped. In this form, Devi Parvati is revered as the daughter of Himalaya Raja. Shaila means extraordinary or rising to great heights. The divine consciousness represented by Devi always surges from the peak. On this first day of Navratri, we propitiate Devi Shailaputri so that we may also attain the highest state of consciousness.

Second Day – Brahmacharini

On the second day, Devi Brahmacharini is propitiated. Devi Brahmacharini is the form of Devi Parvati in which she undertook severe penance to have Lord Shiva as Her consort. Brahma means divine consciousness and achar refers to behavior. Brahmacharya is the behavior or an act that is established in divine consciousness. This day is especially sacred to meditate and explore our inner divinity.

Third Day – Chandraghanta

On the third day, Devi Chandraghata is the presiding Devi. Chandraghata is the special form that Devi Parvati assumed at the time of Her marriage with Lord Shiva. Chandra refers to the moon. The moon represents our mind. The mind is restless and keeps moving from one thought to another. Ghanta is a bell which produces only one kind of sound always. The significance is that when our mind is established at one point, i.e Divine, then our prana (subtle life force energy) gets consolidated leading to harmony and peace. This day thus signifies withdrawing from all vagaries of the mind, with a single focus on Mother Divine.

Fourth Day – Kushmanda

On the fourth day, Mother Divine is worshipped as Devi Kushmanda. Kushmanda means a pumpkin. Ku means little, ushma means energy and anda refers to egg. This entire universe which arose from the cosmic egg (hiranyagarbha) is manifested from an infinitesimal energy of Devi. A pumpkin also represents prana as it has the unique property of absorbing and radiating prana. It is one of the most pranic vegetables. On this day, we worship Devi Kushmanda who showers us with Her divine energy.

Fifth Day - Skandamata

Skandamata means Mother of Skanda. On the fifth day, the motherly aspect of Devi Parvati is worshipped. In this form, she is the mother of Lord Karthikeya. She represents motherly affection (vatsalya). Worshiping this form of Devi brings abundance of wisdom, wealth, power, prosperity and liberation.

Sixth Day – Katyayani

On the sixth day, Devi manifests as Katyayani. It is a form that Mother Divine assumed to annihilate the demonic forces in the universe. She was born from the anger of the gods. She is the one who slayed Mahishasura. As per our scriptures, anger that supports dharma (righteousness) is acceptable. Devi Katyayani represents that divine principle and form of the Mother Divine who is behind natural calamities and disasters. She is the anger that arises in creation to restore balance. Devi Katyayani is invoked on the sixth day to put an end to all our inner foes that are an obstacle on the path of spiritual evolution.

Seventh Day – Kalaratri

On the seventh day, we invoke Devi Kalaratri. Mother Nature has two extremes. One is terrifying and devastating. The other is beautiful and serene. Devi Kalaratri is a fierce form of Devi. Kalaratri represents the dark night. Night is also considered an aspect of Mother Divine as it is night that brings solace, rest and comfort to our souls. It is only at night that we get a glimpse of infinity in the skies. Devi Kalaratri is that infinite dark energy that houses innumerable universes.

Eighth Day – Mahagauri

Devi Mahagauri is that which is beautiful, gives momentum and freedom in life. Mahagauri represents the beautiful and serene aspect of Nature. She is that energy which propels our lives and also liberates us. She is the Devi who is worshipped on the eighth day.

Ninth Day - Siddhidatri

On the ninth day, we worship Devi Siddhidatri. Siddhi means perfection. Devi Siddhidatri brings perfection in life. She makes the impossible, possible. She takes us beyond the ever reasoning logical mind to explore the realm beyond time and space.

Your husbands have been watching you dance for years. The first time they had set their eyes on you, you were leading your dandiya dance group in the middle of a square during Navratri week. You had caught Marc’s eye and almost lost your footing. You saw him every night after that and on the tenth day, Vijayadashami, he asked you out and the rest was history.

Unknowing to you, they have been studying your every move while you’ve been practicing and had wanted to surprise you for your fifth anniversary. For you, your art was sacred, tied to the religion that you were born and raised in. The three of them respected this and had always supported you without a single complaint. In fact, they were one of your biggest fans, dotting on your every move.

As per usual, on the first day of Navratri, you left the flat pretty early for your dress rehearsals, texting your husbands that you have left and you will see them there.

At dress rehearsal, you couldn’t find your kajal, dumping out the contents of your makeup bag onto the table, skimming through every single product, frustration creeping up your spine.

“Looking for this?”

You whipped your head up at the mirror in front of you and what you saw made you think you had hit your head and slipped into another dimension. Behind you was Jake, dressed in traditional dandiya attire, a tempting smirk curling his lips and holding your kajal.

“Like what you see?” His voice floats into your ears once again, snapping you out from your little daze.

You turn and take a better look at him, your mouth hanging open slightly. You nod slowly as he curls a finger under your chin, lifting your head up and popping the kajal open with his right hand, letting the cap fall to the table. He gestured you to look up and with steady hands, he lined your waterline precisely. You smile up at him as your heart warms with the best sensation ever.

“You guys are so cute, I’m definitely sleeping on the highway tonight, or bathe with my toaster.” Your friend says.

You pout and swipe a little kajal from your eyes and dot it on Jake’s cheek, forming a kaala tikka, sticking your tongue out at your friend.

“What was that for?” Jake chuckled as you pulled him away to a quiet corner.

“Oh just a superstition, you know, to keep you away from the evil eye.” You mumble and Jake laughs.

“Well, lucky for us, we have our lucky charm by our side the whole night, innit love?” Steven fronted, kissing your forehead.

Suddenly, something clicked.

“You guys are going to dance?” You ask, trying to conceal your shock.

“Mhm, special anniversary gift for our darling angel.” Steven says, hugging your shoulder. “Don’t worry about it, we checked with the group months beforehand and we have it under control.”

Before you could say anything, your friend hands you and Steven each colorful dandiya sticks and Steven grabs onto your hand, pulling you out of the dressing room.

“You ready?”

“Always.”

As the music starts, you turn to Steven and smile, hitting the two sticks together over your head and watching him do the same. Then you turn to him, hitting your right stick with his right stick and followed by the left sticks.
