I once read a book where the main character travels back in time, and ends up the waitress for their mom (who is deceased in the main timeline). And they have this brief, kind, and completely meaningless interaction. And now every time I go to a restaurant, I act as if the waitress is my kid, traveling through time with one last chance to see me.

A friend sent me a horror podcast. I told her I would not listen because parenting is a horror movie already. You're asleep at night and a small hand reaches out of the darkness, touching your face. The hand is wet, you don't know why. You're doing the dishes with your headphones inat 11:30 because it's the chore you put out the longest. You turn around and a small human is staring at you unblinking from the counter behind you. You don't know how long they were there. You're taking a shower, eyes closed and rinsing out the soap. You hear someone whispering your name, but you ignore it because you're probably just hearing the water and your senses are playing tricks on you. The whispering repeats, now it's multiple voices whispering your name. You know the door had been locked, but you are no longer alone.

On May 19 Sgt. Michael Kunovich deemed him suspicious while outside the Super 8 motel parking lot. Aguilar Mendez was sitting down eating but started to walk away when the officer approached in his patrol vehicle. Two other deputies arrived to assist in taking the 5-foot-4, 115-pound teen to the ground as Kunovich repeatedly stunned him with his taser, all seen on body-worn camera video. Aguilar Mendez can be heard screaming for his family and is seen trying to gain control of the taser as the officers note in the video. Toward the end of the 6-minute scuffle, the deputies saw that their handcuffed suspect had a small folding knife and disarmed him. Kunovich collapsed a short time later in medical distress and died at the hospital, the Sheriff's Office said. Aguilar Mendez, who came here from Guatemala, was staying with other farmworkers at the hotel. He is being detained without bail, which is the subject of another hearing as yet to be decided. I'm going to need you all to start spreading awareness about this case and sign the petition. I'm a 5'4 woman and I weigh more than him. He's only 18, indigenous and doesn't understand English nor Spanish really. I can't imagine how confused and scared he was. Tased 6 times and apologizing repeatedly and calling out for his family... he is not responsible for the police officer's death. The fact he's been held for 8 months without bail is disgusting.

Superman is not best friends with Batman in spite of the fact that Batman has a plan(s) to kill Superman if he turns evil, he's best friends with Batman because he is ready, willing, and able to kill him if he goes bad. Because the last thing Superman would want is to hurt innocent people, and he is thankful to have someone capable of stopping him and would do so in an instant.

Oh no you mean the boys couldn't connect with a superhero movie where there are 3 superheroes but none of them are men? And two of them are not white and one is not even Christian. Oh I am shocked. Especially when the powerful antagonist is also not white male. You don't say. And the supporting roles have men but one is black and the other is Asian and rest are muslims?! So cruel!!! Must be the bad acting of Oscar winning lead and critically acclaimed directors fumbling, can't be anything else. Am sure all the reviews are unbiased. So sad.

It was more enjoyable than anything in Phase 3 except Civil War.

I needed about 3 more minutes on the grassland planet to build up the emotions that carol blurted out, and maybe 30 seconds to confirm that the singing planet was okay without a bunch of their water.

The Marvels was the most fun I’ve had at a Marvel movie, let alone ANY movie, in such a long time.

I have to sing Nia DaCosta’s praises for her work in The Marvels.

The place-swapping is seamless, slick and FUN.

The visual tethers to Captain Marvel, WandaVision, & Ms. Marvel are subtle yet impactful (Monica running after Carol!). They take the story higher, further, faster.

I saw the marvels last night and it's better than everyone was saying like omg I need to see it again!!

Jon wants to be different. He wants to ignore what people say and focus on what is RIGHT. But he also saw the near destruction of his country on his coronation day because of old grudges. He's acutely aware of how alone Tortall is against its potential enemies and how absolutely critical it is for those countries to become her allies. He can't afford to lose one single bargaining chip-- Kalesin's marriage, Roald's squire, etc -- if he is going to hold his fragile country together. He wasted all of his own political opportunities for what made him happy and Tortall suffered.

Knights are embodiments of Duty and Honor according to Kel. What is more the embodiment than a princess who chooses to become an empress to protect her homeland and guide the rebuilding of another instead of taking up her shield?

usually i loathe when a protagonist gets turned into a "bad" parent in a sequel series but tortall does it so well and so realistically that i can't help but think it'd be ooc any other way. of course alanna is gruff and sometimes unkind and not always present. of course jonathan must do what is best for realm and reputation; of course he's king first, father second. jon's parenting style is visible from the start in how roald acts during his page years — jon as a page sees ralon held down and beaten for the crime of bothering little alan; raoul, much as he wants to, can't so much as join kel on her nighttime patrols for fear of how it'd look. jon takes alanna on as a squire because they're good friends & lovers; roald has had his knight-master picked out for him for years before he's even made a squire.

alanna gets along well enough with alan and thom, her knightling and her scholar, but she can't for the life of her understand how aly works. in my opinion this has something to do both with the fact that aly is a lot more like george in the most dangerous ways and with the fact that aly is rather significantly more of a Girl than alanna ever was. alanna had no (0) female friends growing up and only one older female mentor figure. she grew up and still lives the vast majority of her life surrounded by men of similar status. is it any surprise she finds her sons easier to talk to?

there's a passing sentence in trickster's choice that alludes to aly having once been jealous of how effusive her mother was about keladry of mindelan. i can't help but think also about kalasin ii of conté, kally whose mother's people are matrilineal, kally who should by rights have been her mother's heir. kally who calls the lioness aunt and wanted as a child nothing more than to be a knight, who will spend the rest of her life in carthak and likely never see a lady knight again. i think she was jealous of kel too, but in the opposite direction. aly couldn't and wouldn't be who kel was, too protective of her own freedom and too much like her father to ever want a shield. aly envied the easy understanding alanna had of kel's ambitions and grit. kalasin had those same ambitions but never got the chance to show that same grit. kalasin spent the four years of kel's page training at king's reach learning to be an empress.

it's the. not wanting and choosing not to do vs the wanting and not having the choice. it's the jealousy someone so distant from alanna got so much of her attention when her interactions with her own daughter were constantly snippy vs the thought that kally should've been there first, should've gotten to prove the conservatives wrong, should've been able to show kel around and shield (ha) her from the worst of their ire. no little girls will grasp wide-eyed for tales of aly cooper or empress kalasin the same way they do for the lioness and lady kel. i don't think aly minds, but i think kalasin very, very quietly does.
