Hey guys. I’m glad to be finally posting my “mental breakdown survival guide”. As you know I struggle a lot with mental health, and so I have been through a lot of breakdowns. So many that I actually dropped out of university after 3 weeks in 2016 and had to take the whole year off. Because of this, I’ve made it my mission to help others with mental health issues as much as I can, so you don’t have to go through what I’ve been through.
Anyway, here is my guide. I tried to keep it general, and actually useful. If you have any questions or additions please feel free to add them.
And as ever, if you want to talk to me about studying with mental illness or want to see a post on a specific topic, please feel free to message me.

°•BTS #4: freshman advice•°
ho boy kids please take this advice °•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°• ▪don't swarm in packs. ▪don't go to the bathroom alone (pertinent for my ladies ok don't) ▪ffs put your schedule on your phones lockscreen ok the last thing u need is some senior directing u across the school (true story) ▪don't overpack. i swear you most likely are ▪join!! a!! club!! or team!! just get involved. i did cross country and did the summer training and made so many friends. theatre also has made me a lot friends. ▪don't just stick with the kids you knew in middle school. branch out ▪focus on your school work. strengthen your study habits for the hell years to come. ▪be nice to people! don't be a jerk ok no one likes that and the older kids especially don't like that from a freshman. ▪get in good with your teachers. could be the difference between an A and a B. ▪take good classes. pick ones that'll challenge you and look good for college but that won't stress you out too much. ▪speaking of stress, take care of yourself. it is perfectly acceptable to take mental health days. ▪be prepared. don't be that kid who asks everyone for a pencil or paper. ▪take notes. just do it ok. ▪S T U D Y this isn't middle school anymore folks you gotta wORK OK ▪try and befriend some older kids. they may save ur ass one day ▪try and go to a game or a play or some school event. it's always nice to show support and it can be fun. ▪go to at least one school dance (hoco). just try it, go with friends if you don't have a date. if it sucks then u all can just go to ihop and eat pancakes. but go trust me it's an experience. ▪don't worry about popularity ok. ik easier said than done but honestly when u get ur priorities straight and realize that doesn't matter u will be waaaay chiller i swear ▪don't worry about dating either ok honestly u probs won't have time ▪enjoy yourself. you're stuck here for 4 years might as well try and make some fun memories ▪understand that you're on the bottom of the totem pold now. eventually you'll climb up. let the sophomores mess with you a bit, they got it too (but if it gets out of hand that's not ok) ▪that being said, keep in mind your experience as a freshman for the new class. ▪be good kiddos

°•BTS #3: what to actually keep in your locker•°
ok so at my school no one uses their lockers bc you literally can't get to them (they are INSIDE your homeroom class so like teachers won't let you go get stuff out of it since you'd interupt a class and they are utterly useless) BUT i keep a few things in them for emergencies so here we go °•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°• hr locker: ▪sweater (for the cold or if you have ur period and bleed through it'll help cover it up u feel me) ▪extra change of clothes (if you have uniform probs not helpful but like maybe socks or an extra belt) ▪charger (GET A PORTABLE CHARGER AND EVERYONE WILL LOVE U) ▪umbrella ▪extra money (like $5) gym locker ▪perfume/cologne ▪deodorant ▪baby powder ▪mirror ▪hairbrush ▪hairties/bobbipins ▪baby wipes (ok like we don't have showers & they're probs really gross anyways so this will keep you fresh at least for the day) ▪extra makeup (like mattefying powder is probs all i'd keep but whatever u feel u need) ▪your gym clothes and shoes obviously {wow i'm glad i don't have gym anymore}

some tips for incoming college freshmen, based on the mistakes i made during my first year
✎ don’t get in the habit of skipping class for no reason. really. it might seem harmless (especially if attendance isn’t required) but it will most likely end up affecting you negatively. just go to class.
✎ try to be as organized as possible. organization can’t harm you and there are so many potential benefits to keeping your school and personal life in order.
✎ don’t be afraid to enjoy yourself. honestly, what’s the point if school is only ever miserable. there are so many ways to enjoy your experience at college, so take a break from your studies every once in a while. otherwise, you might find yourself hating school.
✎ that being said, don’t spend too much time socializing and partying. or, at least, don’t choose it over your school work altogether. you don’t want the social aspect of college to overpower the academic aspect. after all, you are most likely paying a lot of money to study there, and ignoring your studies will only harm you. find a balance.
✎ even if your classes don’t start until 2 in the afternoon, wake up at a reasonable time. it might be difficult if you’re used to sleeping in very late, but the morning is the perfect time to get some things done, and sleeping in until 10 minutes before your class does waste a lot of time. plus, you’ll probably do better in class if you didn’t just wake up.
✎ naps are good though! as long as you don’t nap during the whole day, napping is very beneficial.
✎ don’t get too involved in drama with other people. if your friend group becomes draining and exhausting because of drama, recognize that it might be better for you to take a step back.
✎ don’t get caught up in the idea of having the perfect “college experience.” do what you want to do, not what everyone else does or what you believe you’re supposed to do. there are different types of college experiences, and you don’t have to, for example, join a sorority/fraternity, go to parties, get drunk/high, etc. just because you think you’re supposed to as a college student.
✎ try to participate in class. i failed at this miserably because of my fear of talking to people lol, but it is best to be more involved in class discussions if you can. this is especially important when participation is part of your grade.
✎ if you have a roommate, don’t expect to be best friends with them. you can, but it’s not always best. in my experience, it tends to work best if you’re friendly with them, but you also have different groups of people you hang out with. this is based on preference though.
✎ get off of campus sometimes! depending on where you live, there may be a bunch of things you can do in your town with friends. you don’t want to always feel stuck at your school. that being said, there are probably a lot of things to do on campus too.
✎ if you have a source of income, try to be reasonable with your spending. you should definitely save some money for emergencies. and the money you do spend should be spent reasonably. this isn’t to say you should never spend money on things that you enjoy, but you definitely should have some sort of budget, or you might find yourself wasting all of your money on 2am trips to denny’s (if you’re me, that is).
✎ sometimes you may need to be alone. don’t feel bad telling your friends ‘no’ every once in a while. you may find it easiest to work alone, or you might just wanna relax without the pressure of being with other people. that’s okay! find a place on campus where you can be away from everyone sometimes.

honestly this is amazing advice that i wish i had freshman year. freshmen, take this to heart
Tips for freshman in high school
I finished my gap year and with that my high school journey has officially ended. 4 years ago I was a freshman and here’s what I wish I had known:
stand up for yourself. In high school, we are all trying to figure ourselves out and everyone grows differently. Everyone is trying to fight for acceptance from each other. No matter what, you have to stand up for who you are. That sounds cheesy but all it means is: whatever you are right now, whatever you believe in right now, that’s what you have to defend. At all costs. Don’t give in to other definitions of living made my other people.
don’t push your parents away. They are going to be very scared as well and don’t know how you will react to being in high school. If you have parents, or parents who listen, make sure you are letting them know about your teachers, your friends, your classes, what you find most difficult, how the school is, etc. All they want is to be included in your life.
Right from the start, make a good impression. Let the teachers know you are a good student. Especially if you’re in public school. Let the teachers know you are caring, dedicated and willing to do good in their class. How you do this:
always ask and answer questions in class. It’s what distinguishes the top students in class. Even if you answer something wrong, it’s 1000% better than not saying anything for evaluation. Believe me. You also learn better this way.
how do you get past that fear of speaking in class? You don’t. Your heart will always beat a 1000 miles an hour. You make the jump and practice practice practice. It does get better with practice. Eventually, you, your classmates and the teacher get used to you speaking in class.
pay attention in class. This can be tricky if your classmates are really bad. The main thing is not caring about your classmates inside of the classroom. It’s binary: you’re either paying attention or not. Take notes, do extra exercises, anything to keep focus. Get a seat in the first horizontal rows if you can choose.
nod when the teacher is explaining something and you understand it.
look confused and write a question down when the teacher is explaining something and you don’t understand it. Ask the question after the explanation or during exercises time.
don’t use your phone or headphones in class unless the teacher specifically tells you it’s ok.
focus on your grades. Getting Good Grades IS VERY IMPORTANT.
have a grade goal you want to achieve for each class, maybe one that you think it’s unrealistic for you, those are the ones that make you work the hardest and give you the best results. Keep it to yourself or share, doesn’t matter, but keep it vivid (write it down) and remember it every time you have to study or step into the classroom.
don’t be intimidated by popular kids. They are just as insecure as you. Don’t blush when they look at you, you are just as important.
don’t worry about your clothes or makeup. Unless it’s a passion of yours. If it’s not, as long as your clean and comfortable, you should be good to go. Being attractive should be the least of your concerns.
you see those kids with the cigarettes and drugs and loud music? Run away, don’t look at them, don’t go out with them. For real. Stay safe.
have friends! High school is way more fun when you have friends to joke around during breaks. I was so lucky to find a close group of friends I felt safe and comfortable with and with whom I still go out and talk to this day, I didn’t plan for it to happen but it did and I’m sure it will happen for you too.
don’t leave things to the last minute!!!!! I’m serious. Start working on notes, exercises and reading right from the beginning of the school year. It will make things 10x easier. When you get to finals week, everyone will be stressing out and you’ll be that person who already read through everything twice, did every single exercise already and is annoyingly calm. It is possible. You just have to work right from the beginning and do small chunks of work every single day.
