One of the most interesting fanfic out there, why is it so underrated eh

When I heard theres a KNY fanfic that has Cyberpunk theme n married Giyushino l was like “ if l dont draw this l’m gonna drop dead.” And it did not disappoint. Love it. ( seriously though, its a mix of melancholy romance and sci fi, pretty engaging)

LISTEN the reason why giyuushino’s got appeal is because the way shinobu interacts with giyuu makes it feel like they’ve dated in the past and she’s now his bitter ex trying to remind him at every turn why she fucking dumped him and is shocked to find out months after their break-up he STILL hasn’t figured that out and tries to tell him by keeping up this polite cutesy co-worker persona while insulting him to his very face every chance she gets.

“oh, so you hadn’t noticed people don’t like you? that’s kind of sad,” sounds more like “you stupid fucking asshole you’re a distant piece of shit who never liked to cuddle and wouldn’t fucking kiss me when i was all but practically pointing at my lips and shoving my face right in front of yours whenever i could so now go die a virgin you fucking himbo.”

but jokes aside giyuu and shinobu have very powerful parallels in the way they deal with loss. giyuu is filled with a tremendous guilt over the deaths of his best friend sabito and his older sister tsukako. tsukako sacrificed herself so he would survive when a demon attacked their home, and sabito was one of urokodaki sakonji’s most talented students, to whom giyuu at the time didn’t think he could compare to. regardless of sabito’s talent, he still died saving giyuu and urokodaki’s other surviving students during their own examination in a display of selflessness that left giyuu with a massive inferiority and survivor’s complex where he couldn’t acknowledge that sabito only wanted him to live and that therefore he should live in a way that would make him proud. giyuu believes he is not deserving of the title of water pillar despite his incredible growth and near unrivalled prowess because he could not save the people he loved while inexperienced, and now that he is experienced he cannot bring himself to accept that he’s progressed and can make a difference. therein lies a contradiction of how he doesn’t think he is worthy of the trust his deceased loved one placed upon him, but still keeps their memory close to him in the way he styles his haori: one half in the colors of sabito’s clothing and the other in the colors of his sister. 

on the other hand, shinobu wears one of kanae’s, her sister’s, hairpins (kanao wears the other) while also donning the haori she left behind. but shinobu takes this remembrance one step further by changing the way she acts completely. in flashbacks it’s revealed how before kanae died, shinobu was a far more temperamental, impatient, and stressed young girl who had to prod her sister into taking matters seriously and urgently, not comprehending that kanae was simply being gentle because she believed that gentleness was something that could triumph in a world filled with violence. after her death, shinobu emulates her sister to the point where it almost looks like she’s trying to be her completely knowing that’s not who she herself is. it speaks volumes about how shinobu has to pretend she’s living as someone else and adopt their gentleness because she cannot live with her own rage and grief and express it outwardly due to the overwhelming pain of loss. shinobu cannot internalize her sister’s philosophy after witnessing not just the deaths other demons have caused but most importantly, kanae’s death at the hands of douma, and therefore has to do the next best thing which is imitating her sister in an effort to not lose her memory to her own anger.

i say that these ways in which they cope with the deaths of their families is the main appeal of their ship because they have so much in common it would only feel natural that, in getting to know one another’s pain, they’d be able to understand each other and help overcome it by becoming people they can trust and depend on mutually. they both have feelings that they repress in an effort to avoid connecting with other people, in shinobu’s case because of something she intends to do, and in giyuu’s case because he’s afraid of losing someone he cares about again despite risking his life for the sake of tanjiro and nezuko. 

tl;dr: i think it would all be better if they just held hands.
