The Lion's voice is connected to the paladins memory.

A headcanon I had I'm not sure if it has been done but I like to think that the voices the lions use yo communicate with the paladins is the voice of someone special in their life

Lance's is his mums

Pidge's is their dads

Hunk is his mums

Shiro's is Adams

And Keith's is a voice he doesn't recognise, a woman's. He never brings it up cause he doesn't realise the corellation. It isn't until he meets his mum thar he realises it.

Red used his mother's voice. Something he didn't remember but one that brought a sense of safety.
