Why is no one talking about how the painting was originally meant to be a welcoming gift?!?!
Of course Will poured his heart into it. The painting has a meaning and giving Mike the painting would still be a declaration of love but only for Will himself. Mike was never supposed to know the meaning behind it. Will would’ve given Mike the painting at the airport and that’s it. Mike would’ve told him that it’s amazing and Will would’ve been flustered and that’s it. Will would’ve never explained its meaning.
But things didn’t go as planned so Mike was a total douche to Will which lead to Will being too insecure to give Mike the painting. Because even though Will wouldn’t even have told Mike the meaning behind it, the meaning still exists and Will got the feeling that Mike didn’t really care to reunite with him so he thought he wouldn’t care about the painting either.
After Mike apologized and re-established their friendship Will got confident again to give Mike the painting. He probably would’ve given it to him when they arrived in Hawkins. And from then on it would’ve just been Will giving the painting to Mike and that’s it, again. No explanation of feelings. Only the painting.
But things didn’t go as planned, again, and that lead to a moment were Mike needed support. Mike needed someone to tell him that he matters too and that he’s loved for who he is. Will loves Mike for who he is. And that’s exactly what he poured into the painting so the idea to involve the painting came in that exact moment. Will knew what Mike needed to hear to be encouraged so he risked it all then and there to make Mike feel better about himself. Because what Mike needed to hear was exactly what Will feels for him!
The reason why Will used El’s name was because he thought it wouldn’t mean anything to Mike if it came from him.
