Maybe it was nerves, but his shoulder was really starting to hurt now. Just breathe. You can do this. Pretend she isn’t there. It would have been much easier if he hadn’t learned to always know when she was there. The Wraith. He’d recruited her to terrorise his enemies, and now he was the one afraid.
Inej came back into the room and paused when she saw him. Of course he’d have to take off his shirt; how else was she supposed to treat the wound? She’d almost forgotten that Kaz was human like everyone else. This was quite the reminder.

“...Do you think they’re still out there? Your parents?”
“They have to be. Everything that’s happened...it has to be worth it. I’m not sure what’s left for me if it isn’t.” Inej said.
“You’d have at least...” Nina looked back and counted the people around them. “…five very cool friends.”
Inej smiled. “Who didn’t make the cut?”
“Jury’s still out on Tolya and the prince. And Kaz Brekker will forever be an enigma to me.” Nina said.
“But you’re counting Tamar?”
“That’s wishful thinking on my part. She wields axes, Inej, I need to be her friend.”

Thanks for the support on When We Collide so far! I'm loving writing it and really excited for everyone to see what happens next!
I've been planning out a lot more of the story today, so as a tease I thought I'd give you some upcoming chapter titles...

He’d recognised her beauty from the moment he first saw her face, but he hadn’t realised until now that she didn’t. It was yet another thing he didn’t understand about her. She looked at her reflection like she wasn’t the most beautiful person to ever set foot in Ketterdam. How?
No, he ordered himself. You don’t get to do that. He forced the wide-eyed, open-mouthed boy he wanted to be in that moment back into his cage and locked it tight. There were a million reasons he could never be that boy. Until that moment, he hadn’t thought he would ever want to be that boy again.
He couldn’t let this go on a second longer. He needed a critique or witty remark from her to bring him back to reality and snap him out of this madness. “The others are waiting. You need to get going.”

“This will be more a display of science than magic, I’m afraid.” Wylan noted. “But if you want to entertain me with some tricks while we work, be my guest.”
“I can make myself disappear, see?” Jesper said, ducking under the table.
Wylan laughed a bit too loudly and embarrassed himself. “I can’t believe you haven’t made it big.”
“Art is never truly appreciated in its time.” Jesper shook his head with a chuckle. “Speaking of art, I have a great idea for the shooting range. We could make cardboard cutouts of all my exes.”
Wylan looked around. “Are you sure we’d have enough room?”
Jesper laughed. “You prick!”

As she took her last knife and sat on the bed throwing it from one hand to the other, she turned to Kaz, who was staring out the window. His reflection in it betrayed a tiny flicker of concern on his face he didn’t know she could see. “...Do they have hotels in Ketterdam?”
“Not very good ones.” Kaz said, moving away from the window and sitting in an armchair in the corner of the room. “You take the bed. If I need to sleep, this will do.”
“I’m not sure I enjoy the thought of going to sleep with you staring at me from the corner.” Inej slid her knife under one of the pillows.
“Don’t flatter yourself.” Kaz said defensively. He’d long since filtered out the capability to let himself imagine such things; not that he’d wanted to, of course. He got up and turned the armchair away from the bed and back towards the window. He spread out his arms as if to say “happy now?” and sat back down.

“What people call me and what I deserve to be called are two different things. Dirtyhands. Bastard.” Kaz hissed.
“Kidnapper. Criminal.” Matthias added bitterly. Inej silently prayed for Nina; she clearly had a long way to go before things between her and Matthias were settled.
“Are there any other names for you?” Kaz turned to Inej with a raised eyebrow.
“If there were, I’m sure you’d know them.” Inej said. And rub it in my face that you knew them. “Where did you get the virus from?”
“A pirate.” Kaz said with venom in his voice, an answer tantalising enough that even Matthias had finally turned his head in interest.

“We can’t leave them alone.” Jesper stated.
“You all need to know we can be trusted to play our parts in this team just as much as Matthias and I do ourselves. Please. I’ll be fine.” Nina pleaded.
“Handcuff me if you must.” Matthias said. “I will not harm her.”
“I don’t have handcuffs.” Kaz said, making a note to get some while they were out getting supplies.
“I do!” Jesper stood up, producing a pair from his coat. “Always keep some on me. Don’t ask.”
Second chapter is up! Will try and pace chapters out a bit more while I'm still working on my other stories in progress but this felt like the last "setting everyone up" chapter (it's title even links to chapter 1) so it's good to get it out there. Enjoy!

“You’ve caught me in the middle of a rough patch.” Jesper said, hurrying around the room picking up clothes, plates and litter and tidying them away.
Kaz looked down at the torn eviction notice at his feet. “I can see that.”
“I’m slightly behind on rent – only slightly – and I got dumped about half an hour ago, so it hasn’t exactly been a day I’ll fondly look back on. What are you doing here?” Jesper asked.
“I’m offering you a job.” Kaz said.
“A job or my old job back?”
“Technically both.”
I know, I know, another new story when I'm still working on some others, but in my defence this was supposed to be posted before You'll Be With Me Wherever I Go was even an idea in my head and I really wanted to post something to mark the anniversary of Season 2! I've been sitting on this story for months so I thought I'd share it with the world (it's gonna be a long one; I've only written 5 chapters and we're at nearly 60k words) and I'm really proud of how it's coming together. It's a modern day heist AU with elements pulled from the show and books, sort of like a parallel world really. Enjoy!
(And I promise updates to the other stories are coming soon! I've been writing bits for Ketterdam Elementary and You'll Be With Me Wherever I Go today.)
