Rise Ramblings #789

While researching for a certain project, I realized something interesting about our boy Mikey.

In TMNT lore, clothing is worn for the purpose of “fitting in.” Yet in Rise, gone are the days of wearing “disguises” to pass as humans (whereas some iterations went as far as wearing human head masks.)

I think the closest we get to a “disguise for the purpose of fitting in” is when, for some inexplicable reason, they decide to wear their wrestling costumes while running a mundane errand.

Yet normally, and when sane, the Rise boys wear clothes based on the occasion, just like everyone else.

However, when I started to look at the clothing choices of a certain boy in orange, something stuck out to me.

Other than the winter gear which serves a purpose, and the basic default hoodie for most outside shenanigans, Mikey’s clothing choices are…unique compared to his brothers.

Let’s take his choice of swimwear, for instance.

While his brothers go for more traditional beach attire, what is Mikey wearing?

He’s wearing a one-piece bathing suit from the 1920’s. 😂

Of which, nowadays, is sold as a costume.

Likewise, when the boys need to infiltrate April’s school, Raph and Leo dress accordingly.

But what does Mikey wear?

Now I could be wrong, but I believe that Mikey’s fit is a reference to the movie, “Redline,” complete with an outrageous pompadour.

There are not many other instances of Mikey wearing clothes, but here are a few honorable mentions:

The most clothes Mikey does wear is obviously in “Clothes Don’t Make The Turtle.” Yet, his reception to the situation is different than that of his brothers.

My final thoughts:

This is the most normal outfit that Mikey owns.

It’s a simple sweater, pair of jeans, and glasses. This is a fit that anyone else would wear while out and about.

But for him to wear this particular look, a certain stipulation must be met.

He has to be “Doctor Feelings.”

Given all of the evidence, I’ve come to a conclusion.

I believe that Mikey doesn’t see clothes as a way to be himself. Michelangelo, instead, sees clothes as simply…Cosplay.

Are there any songs you listen to that make you think of the Rise characters (the turtles, april, splinter, etc.)?

Actually, no. I don't listen to much music, just because I'm pretty much a stickler when it comes to all forms of entertainment.

But I do get reminded of Donnie whenever I hear dubstep, house music, or electro dance music in general, lol. 😌

Possibly stupid question, but what do you think the turtles favorite pizza are?

Not sure, but I can take a guess. I believe Mikey's fav is....whatever this pizza is from the "Minotaur Maze" episode:

He was staaarving, and upon attempting to take the first bite he says "Sweet Salvation," which could be just because he's hungry. Buuuuut, I would think that, as hungry as he was, wouldn't he order his favorite pizza?

The toppings? Maybe pepperoni with the green bits being green peppers?

As for the others...

Someone likes Meat lovers, and Donnie likes "definitely not Hawaiian." 😂

You would think the Meat lovers is for Leo, but I have a theory that it's actually for Raph because this is the pizza Leo decides to make for himself.

Pepperoni + Other Meats + Mushrooms and...

judging based on those little hollow circles, maybe it's those Olives. (Oh and don't forget the Parmesan cheese!) 😂

Lastly, I couldn't even try to pin down what Donnie's favorite is. Honestly, I feel like it's whatever he's in the mood for on any given day. Even if it's this:

Do you have any thoughts about how Raph got his retainer? Part of me is wondering if he got it from a Hidden City orthodontist. Another part of me is like “Splinter found it in the trash or he made it.”

Oh I just assumed he got it from Donnie, of whom I can only guess, is/was the one that took care of everyone's basic medical needs up until now. The discovery of the Hidden City would lead to more outside assistance but they didn't discover the Hidden city until recently. Besides, I've seen people online make their own retainers with just some dental training. How much more could a super genius like Donnie make one for his beloved brother.

Also, having a retainer means that at one point Raph wore braces, of which he probably wore for YEARS prior to needing a retainer.

Braces need regular adjustments/maintenance.

Who's doing that? Splinter? Oh no, that had to be all Donnie!

This might sound a little weird, but I just hope that there will be like a chance or possiblility that Ron and the rise crew could still make a season 3 and continue season 2 without nickelodeon. Maybe they could stream the show on a streaming app or something. What do you think?

If the writers did that it would be amazing. However, that also would be a gross infringement of copyright and the terms of use as the TMNT completely belongs to Nickelodeon aka Viacom International Inc. Therefore, as former employees of Nick, Ron and the crew would be issued a "Cease and Desist" so fast! Lol.

What is possible is for Ron and the crew to do online Rise content with Nick. How can we get that to happen? If we did everything that was discussed in my other Season 3 response.

Do you headcanon that Rise!Raph has insecurities about his size?

Actually, no I don't, and here's why.

One of the main themes of the show is acceptance. Don is coded as autistic, Mikey is coded as having ADHD, and Leo is...Leo. However, this is one of the only TMNT iterations where they don't make fun of each other for things that cannot be changed (like Donnie's softshell or his *ahem* forehead.)

Instead, they all love and accept each other as they are unconditionally.

So when it comes to Raph's size, in other iterations he might have been conscious about it, but in this one he's accepted just as he is, so he wouldn't feel the need to change/shrink himself.

If anything, he's constantly working on getting bigger. 😨

Have you noticed?

In the movie, When Raph tried to talk to Leo about responsibility, he just shushed him while covering his mouth.

Later on, when Raph tries to talk to Splinter about Leo’s irresponsibility, Splinter shushes him with his tail.

I don’t know if i’m overthinking it but— It was just a funny coincidence in my head 😃

Haha, like father like son. I love how many mannerisms these boys have in common with Yoshi without them even realizing it.

if the boys were to be able actually go to school, what kind of student would each of them be?(Most/least popular , best/worst grades, biggest criminal record(skipping, pranks, etc), pays the most/least attention in class, etc etc)

...the boys are able to go to school in Rise though.

If not in New York, then definitely in the Hidden City. 😁

In general, I think Donnie would be the most studious (obviously) but I don't think any of them would be particularly bad students. Leo might pretend to be nonchalant and a slacker but, in reality, I believe he'd be just at studious as Donnie albeit behind closed doors.

As far as details about what they would study and how they would be in school, that I can't say...mostly because it would be spoilers for my "Don the Fashionista" comic!

It takes place in the "Good Future," so naturally all of the boy's escapades will be lumped into the background of Donnie's main plot. 👀

...Did you know that mystic technology was not the original plan for Donnie's ninpo?

When asked about Donnie's mystic abilities, Ron Corcillo, one of the writers for Rise, said this:

So it was Josh, Donnie's voice actor, that spoke up against Donnie using a more traditional version of Ninpo and instead the team decided to make Donnie's mystic power more true to character, hence his "Mystic-Tech Combo."

Josh's intervention is why Donnie's version of mysticism is so on-brand and so so good!

Being Hamato Yoshi

Rise Ramblings #742

Splinter goes by many names.

Lou Jitsu is the name he used while clawing his way to fame in a cutthroat industry.

Hamato Yoshi is the name he was born with, a name that represented the Hamato legacy and the expectations of his family.

Then, when he found himself broken, mutated, and homeless, Splinter is the name that he took upon himself as he was now just a broken splinter off the once mighty Hamato family tree.

At that point in life Splinter was content with wallowing in his disenfranchisement and grieved over what once was and what would never be. The television became a comfort and a means to soothe his all-encompassing depression (as discussed in “What they Became.”)

Nonetheless, slowly but surely, something began to draw his attention away from mourning himself and his past life.

That “something” was his sons.

He falls into his role as a sensei simply enough (between cake, naps, and a commercial or two, of course.)

But, in due time, something within him changes as well.

It’s hard to tell when that change happened but the former ways of the Hamato clan eventually and intrinsically unearthed itself.

The same way that his grandfather pushed the Hamato legacy onto him is the same way that he ultimately pushes that legacy onto his sons.

But history repeats itself. Just like he did, his boys also buckle under the pressure of their family name.

This time, though, Splinter learns from the mistakes of his elders and apologizes, thus becoming the accepting and accommodating parental figure he needed all those years ago.

Likewise, over time, he begins to find a new purpose. His unique experiences have left him with a specific type of wisdom, a wisdom that only comes from being Lou Jitsu, Hamato Yoshi, and Splinter.

Therefore, instead of looking within, he begins the altruistic work of looking outward in order to help his family, friends, and the people he cares about the most.

With his healthier state of mind, he is finally able to move on and look forward at the brightened path of his future, their future.

By being Lou Jitsu the superstar, Hamato Yoshi, the carrier of the Hamato legacy, and Splinter the lowly rat, he finds himself with a new name, yet it’s his highest honor to date and is a name that can only be earned...
