Remember when you used to be a human being? When people thought you were smart and your brain was useful?
Uh, actually, that is what happens.
Sometimes you don't have a real teacher.
Dodge suddenly went all pale.
Sometimes you have a real teacher who quit, leaving you without a replacement.
Sometimes you pick one of the other teachers and make him the science teacher.
Well, isn't that interesting? Thank you for sharing that with us, Gordy.
Remember when you used to be a human being? When people thought you were smart and listened when you spoke?
Maybe you were damaged, maybe you were prone to seizures, but you were still useful.
Still human. Beautiful, sacred, magical.

"Do you know why I'm happy to work in a kitchen, Mr. Bradshaw?" Lily asked pleasantly.
Mr. Bradshaw raised an eyebrow, giving Lily a dismissive once over. "Because that's all you're good for."
Lily smiled sweetly. "Because that's where all the knives are."

"They waited for you, you know."
Oscar looked up from where they had been knocked down. Christian was glaring down at them with his hands clenched into fists. Christian marched over to Oscar and pulled them up by the collar.
"You told us you'd come back! You told us not to worry and we waited for you!"
Oscar grabbed Christian's wrists as he started walking, forcing Oscar backwards into a wall.
"Oliver waited for you! You're the most important person to them, you know better than anyone how Matthew ruined their life, so why are you siding with him!?"

Humans have many different kinds of smiles. And many different humans smile in different ways. Sometimes it’s hard to tell, but with enough time one would be able to tell the differences.
Sometimes a smile is helpless, an instinctive reaction.
Sometimes a smile is an armor, hiding from the world everything that wants to be secret.
Sometimes a smile is a weapon, meant to hurt or protect.
Sometimes a smile is sad, conveying sorrow without the stumbling words.
Humans smile in thousands of ways, and I’m sure I’ll never learn them all, but my favorite smiles, I think, are the ones pulled from surprise.

When I was a child my Nana told me to be happy.
And I always was happy when I got to spend time with my Nana, but Mama told me that Nana was a waste of time. Mama never liked Nana.
When I was a child I would sit on my Papa’s lap while he wove me stories of the world.
Sometimes Papa told me stories that made me jump for joy, like the ones about how he would design silly puppet plays to make Nana and Daddy laugh. Sometimes Papa told me stories that made me sob and gasp for breath, like the ones about how Mama became lost and alone after evil man-eating creatures stole her away.
When I was a child Mama taught me how to fight.
Mama lost her family once. The one time I saw her cry it was when she made me promise to learn all I could from her so she’d never lose me too. Those days with Mama were long, spent in the library reading the history of weapons. Or spent in the training yard, learning to how to fall, how to roll, how to run faster than I ever thought I could. Mama spent hours teaching me to survive.
When I was a child, my Daddy taught me how to heal.
Daddy was always waiting by the side of the training yard, ready to patch me up and teach me how it worked. Sometimes he would look sad, like he was slowly losing me and all he could do was watch. Sometimes he’d pull me aside before Mama could bring me to the yard and talk to me. He’d tell me that no matter what Mama taught me, I had to remember to heal what I hurt. He’d tell me to be kind.
When I was a child I lost them all. Now I’m ready to watch the world burn.
