Forgery: UniAbuja hands over 4 students to NECO for prosecution The authorities of the University of Abuja have released four students of the university to the National Examinations Council, NECO, for prosecution over forgery. The four suspects, accused of forging NECO results to gain admission into the university, are to be arraigned in court by the nation’s secondary schools’ examination body this week. The four students, have since been picked up by the police and were in detention in Minna, Niger State, where the examination body has its headquarters. The suspects said to be indifferent faculties, were alleged to have forged the certificates and used the same in gaining admission into the university. A one-count charge has been preferred against the suspects whose names were given as Effiong Theresa Etim, Solomon Victor, Abdulkabir Mohammad, and Yakubu Joy Adama at the FCT Magistrate Court, Wise 2, in Abuja, by the police. Police prosecutor, Chijioke Chigozie, said about nine students of the university have so far been arrested over the similar offense. He, however, added that they were still under investigation. The arrest followed an ongoing screening exercise embarked upon by NECO on all the higher institutions in Nigeria which led to the arrest of the suspects in October 2019. The examination body said that the move was to overhaul the institutions and its certificate issuance in order to ensure that only credible certificates are issued to the public. “This is to send a strong message to students out there using fake NECO certificates”, an official of the body said. A charge sheet sighted by Vanguard, Monday, in Abuja, showed that the offense contravened section 364 of the penal code. Coronavirus: Nigeria quarantines 39 people after case detection The Ogun State Government and Lafarge Africa have confirmed that contacts in respect of the recorded single case of Coronavirus (Covid-19) has hit 39 from the initial reported 28. These include the driver who picked the infected Italian from a hotel in Ikeja and those who served him food and drink. Contrary to the reports going round in the media that the production lines of Lafarge Africa PLC, Ewekoro have been closed following the visit of the Coronavirus-infected Italian to the company’s guest house, the management of Lafarge and Ogun State Government have debunked the closure of the cement production lines. The Ogun Government and Lafarge Africa confirmed this development at the Lafarge facility during an on-the-spot-assessment by the host state government, Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), World Health Organisation (WHO) teams and the Industrial Director of Lafarge plc. The Ogun Commissioner for Health, Tomi Coker, commended Lafarge Africa for the quick and proactive measures taken so far. She noted that it was imperative for the state and federal governments to swing into action to contain the spread of the deadly disease. The commissioner said that the state government had activated an Emergency Operation Committee (EOC) to manage any development that may arise from the reported cases of Coronavirus. “We are on top of the situation. There is no cause for alarm. Our health educators are busy with advocacy efforts on the field. We are sensitising our health officers too on preventive measures to adopt. “We have all the required interventions to contain the situation. Members of the public should remain calm,” the commissioner said. On its part, the company said that its production lines were not shut as the guest house where the Italian was lodged is 5km to the manufacturing plants in Ewekoro. The Industrial Director, Lafarge Plc, Segun Soyoye, said the Italian came to Lafarge facilities at Ewekoro to inspect some installations of machines bought from a Swedish firm. Coronavirus: All suspected cases in Nigeria tested negative – NCDC The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) on Thursday confirmed that all the 31 suspected cases of Coronavirus in Nigeria tested were negative. “This means Nigeria is free of Coronavirus,” the Director, Emergency Preparedness and Response, NCDC, Dr John Oladejo said. He disclosed this in Sokoto at a symposium on “The emerging and re-emerging Viral Infections: The story of Lassa fever and COVID-19,” organised by the Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto. He assured that the NCDC has the necessary devices to detect the disease adding that screening has been strengthened at points of entry while in-country surveillance has been enhanced through state epidemiologists. CONSULTANTS On diagnostic capacity, he stated: “We now have testing capacity in three laboratories: National Reference Laboratory, Abuja; LUTH in Lagos; and Irrua in Edo state.” He said as at 23rd of February, 29 countries were affected including China, Thailand, Japan, Republic of Korea, USA, Republic of Singapore, Vietnam, Australia, and Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal. Others affected are France, Malaysia, Canada, Cambodia, Sri Lanka, Germany, United Arab Emirate, Philippines, India, Finland, Italy, Russian Federation, Spain, Sweden, United Kingdom, Belgium, Egypt, Iran, Lebanon and Israel.
