The Wrong Stop
Walking
Sure and swift
A mac for the rain.
Alone, but not lonely
The voices again.
A well trodden route
When husband was here
Familiar but different
Walk faster, be clear.
No-one familiar
Keep going, not far
Edge of the town now
Not sure who you are.
Further and further
This must be the way
Near to the sea now
Been walking all day.
The sand and the gulls
The grass and the sea
The smell of the old times
When there were three.
Alone but not lonely
He's very close by
Find him, head homeward
Indoors, warm and dry.
Back to familiar
Back to the son
Back to the voices
Leading her on.
So tired, so weary
Time now to rest
Head on a handbag
Coat pulled on chest
Sleep now forever
At last the walk's done
Sweet dreams, I love you
Last walk
No more sun.
