But I think another significant part of it is... I am just so damn lazy.

I have characters, ships, and squicks I hate. I try to image harassing people who like them. It sounds exhausting. That's too much effort. It's way too much effort. I'm so lazy. I don't care. So i had just witnessed an artist got harassed by a bunch of antis on Twitter because of their multi-shipping fanart from different fandoms they liked. The worst thing is that, the antishipper who caused the massive harassment to that artist even tried to took a chance to gain fame for their own arts and proud of themself after the artist went private due to the cyberbullying, like they were a real hero who brought victory for the "fictional characters".

I'm sorry if my ranting bothers you, but i can't take it anymore since this is absolutely disgusting, i genuinely feel so bad for the artist right now, i just hope they'll be okay because it was like they had never expected what was gonna happen to them. see that's specifically what i was talking about in my original ask. shit like that is the exact reason i don't feel comfortable or safe being part of this community or even using the label at all anymore. the statement "pedophiles are bad" should never illicit a response longer than a singular sentence. that should not be something anyone argues with on any level. the fact this is even a conversation to be had makes me feel sick.

do you not see how hard it is for anyone else to believe you when you say you aren't pedophiles when you keep changing your beliefs like this? you go from "just because we like XYZ in fiction doesn't mean we're attracted to real kids" to "okay so maybe we are attracted to real kids, but i'm not proud of it" to "okay so maybe i am proud of it, but that isn't a problem because shame doesn't help anything" to "actually it is okay for pedophiles to be in contact with children because attraction isn't like a sanity meter in a video game and it can be overcame."

They call it "a political statement against the notion that their paraphillia should define them and makes them innate immoral," but there's another more fitting word I'd apply to that.

It's normalization. You're normalizing pedophilia. Like actually this time. You're making pedophilia seem like it isn't something innately bad or immoral. Or as some might say, making it seem as if it is normal.

i don't want to be a part of any community that welcomes (or even tolerates) pedophiles among them. in most circles, people who are outed as pedophiles are completely ostracized and booted out of any group they weasel their way into. if i absolutely have to choose between "we harass people over fiction" or "we are okay with known pedophiles making up 1/5 of our community and even carving out safe spaces where we will defend them from criticism," i will happily take the former.

i personally call myself an anti even though my opinions technically align more with yalls specifically because i've engaged with the proship community and i've seen how it really is.

i used to run a discourse blog for a little while and i ended up with a lot of proship/profic followers. for a little while, i did consider myself to be a proshipper, because technically that's what i am. i had it in my bio and shit, talked about how stupid antis are, etc.

i ran the blog for 4-5 months i believe. i started it with the logic that "yeah, just because people enjoy pedophilic/incestuous ships or whatever it doesn't make them an actual pedophile."

and then a shit ton of actual pedophiles and zoos started following me. "proud MAP" in the bio, "pride flag" in the pfp. i had a blocklist at least a mile long on that blog. it got so bad i eventually just quit.

i would've never in a million years thought that the statement "pedophiles are bad" would be controversial, and yet it was. and it made me reflect on the community i was part of.

obviously not ALL proshippers are pedophiles, but god DAMN were there a lot of them lurking around in the same circles. i have never before and never since had anyone follow any of my blogs while also proudly proclaiming themselves to be pedos/zoos/etc. and i blocked at least 100+ blogs in the few months i ran that proship blog.

i genuinely don't care if my thoughts align with those of proshippers, i refuse to use the label anymore.

You have to recognize your capacity for harm. You cannot omit the harm you've done to others to remain "good." Anybody can be a bigot. Anyone can be an abuser. Anyone can harm anyone at any time even those who have been harmed themselves. i am fiercely anti-censorship. i don’t harass people for shipping or creating media for things i wouldn’t approve of IRL and i understand it’s just fiction.

does it make me an anti for not personally wanting to see proship content?

i generally block proship blogs and tags and that’s about it. i don’t report or add them to a list or any of that bs. i’m honestly kind of confused about proshipping as a whole (i don’t know any of the terms and it was explained to me like “these people are bad and hurt people” a long time ago)

Proship just means "ship and let ship", which seems to be your stance. Basically just minding your own and not caring what other people are doing in fandoms. Just don't let an anti tell you what proship means because they have a lot of misconceptions. Or they purposefully like to spread misinformation, I don't know.

But it's totally fine not to vibe with that kind of dark content! Proship doesn't mean you HAVE to ship those sorts of things. Just that you don't bother people who do ship those things. And knowing that a person's ships isn't a reflection of what they want or what they do irl.

i know that a lot of people already know this, and that this may come across as condescending to those who do, but it has become increasingly clear to me that many people, particularly younger people, don't understand this but—

purity culture is more then just thinking sex is bad and evil and gross

purity culture is the belief that you can be corrupted, that there is an level of purity that can be tarnished by thinking or doing something deemed sinful or icky and that once you lose that purity, you are lesser then those who have not been "tainted". it's the belief that seeing, thinking, or doing something inherently nonharmful to others will fundamental change you in a negative way

purity culture is watching gory horror movies and being told that you are disgusting for finding it interesting to watch

purity culture is being told that violence in books, movies, games, etcetera will make you violent

purity culture is being told that wanting to hurt someone makes you bad, darkens your heart, whatever, even if they hurt you first, even if you have no plans to ever act on that desire

purity culture is being told to forgive your abuser, rapist, or even just people who have slighted and hurt you or else you will never fully heal, or that it makes you in someway bad too, or even just as bad as them

purity culture is being told that hating someone is equally to killing them, or wanting to kill them

purity culture is when people have intrusive thoughts that scare and harm them that make you uncomfortable, possibly even triggered, and telling them that they secretly want to do, have, etcetera, those things or else they wouldn't be thinking about it

purity culture is being told not to curse because it makes your mouth filthy, makes your heart filthy, makes you mean and bad and unpleasant

purity culture is being told that jealousy, anger, rage, disgust, and other stigmatized emotions are "bad" or "unhealthy" emotions

purity culture is refusing to let youths or even teenagers read or watch potential upsetting books, shows, movies, games, comics, etcetera out of fear they will act them out, become violent, possessed, unruly, etcetera

purity culture is being told that writing, drawing, or just in general making something dark and uncomfortable makes you gross and evil

purity culture is telling you that you have to portray bad things as bad or else people won't under that it's still bad, that it will normalize this bad thing, that people can be corrupted by it because they can't think for themselves whether this bad thing you portrayed as good is not actually good

purity culture is thinking bad things done for good reasons is just as bad as bad things done for bad reasons, like a mother stealing baby formula to keep her child alive versus someone stealing your pet because they wanted it are equally wrong

purity culture is being told that drinking, smoking, being addicted to drugs, unemployed, homeless, makes you lesser and filthy and corrupts you

purity culture is believing that someone wanting to do something bad, but choosing not to do it because they know it's bad, still makes them bad because they still want to do it

purity culture is thinking people getting tattoos, dying their hair, piercing, wearing make up, getting cosmetic surgeries secretly hate themselves and are disrespecting themselves

purity culture is so much more then just sex. it expands so much further then just christian/religious people and communities

purity culture is doing something bad, and when you try to seek atonement or correct the mistake, that it is unforgivable and will alway be a blight on you, even if others can "learn to look past it"

if you think that someone thinking or do something that does not cause any inherent harm makes them lesser, makes them bad, makes them gross, corrupts them or can lead them to corrupting others, you are pushing purity culture

this is coming from a women raised in an extremely sex negative christian household who spent years hating herself and her body due to sex based purity culture being pushed onto her from the age of six due to early puberty by the way, so don't try to gate keep purity culture on this post as only a religious and or sexual thing

I wanted to piggy-back off the Harry Potter ask regarding performance activism specifically regarding Harry Potter fandom.

I'm a little woozy after a medical emergency I had this week but I'm scared ill forget this, so bare with me, please.

JK Rowling coming out as a TERF was absolutely heartbreaking especially as a queer person who grew up on the series. The series was a life-line in a time where I was being drowned in loneliness. I literally grew up with the books. I started when I was eleven and read the final books ad an 18 yr old.

And when she first came out, I was one of the many who wanted to walk away and no longer wanted to associate with it, but felt so wrong.

It felt wrong on many levels. On the most noticeable, it made me incredibly sad that I felt I was no longer allowed to read the books, enjoy the movies with my family, got to some of the Harry Potter exhibits with my family. A huge part of my adolescence was suddenly forbidden.

Abstaining from the series was hurting me more than it was impacting her.

Then, from a more social justice perspective, what does us abstaining actually do? I mean really, it's like the trnasphobes dumbing their beer over Dylan. Or burning merch over finding out someone is gay or whatever. We make fun of people destroying their merch because the corporations already have their money.

It's the same thing with JKR. She already made her money. She doesn't care what her fans think because she doesn't have to.

Refusing to engage with a piece of media to feel morally superior just makes the individual feel better and I think we do it because people feel powerless and like they have no other way to advocate and fight against transphobia.

It also feels like a way to feel morally superior and as an opportunity to punch down.

So, I, a queer person, let myself enjoy a piece of media creates by a transphobe, because that piece of fiction has grown to be so much more than its creator.

For advocacy?

I donate. I engage with the community. I'm mindful of the conversations I engage in. I speak when needed and listen when needed. I donate when I can. I support trans creators when I can. I vote. I learn our queer history and understand where we've come from and what has allowed us to grow into the community we are now.

Personally, I find it more satisfying and more rewarding, and more impactful than ignoring a fandom and piece of literature that has brought myself and my family joy.
