So that was fun yesterday in starting this blog. I seriously do hope that as time goes by that others will start doing the same. :) I do want to add that in my posts I will be adding some fandom history now and then. Today is one of those days. I may have been a bit self-indulgent. *blushes*
What I'm Reading:
I'm trying to savor the Ginny sorted into Slytherin story I mentioned yesterday. In my first read of it, I raced through it and know that I probably missed enjoying it in it's complete form. I'm on a few Discords and one of them being Harry Potter Fanfiction Club. They have a vote every month to choose what fics the members can read together and discuss. This month they chose for Drarry aideomai's Dwelling. I'd read this masterpiece before but decided to look for a shorter fic by this amazing author. I chose Nice Things. OMG all 22K of this fic is such a treat. If you ever need a warm, dreamylike fic, choose this one. It's an 8th year fic where only 7 of the classmates come back. Ron, Harry, and Hermione are in the mix. Draco is there along with Theo. They are assigned to live in a cottage on the grounds of Hogwarts. The progression of Harry and Draco's relationship is lovely. Read it now or Bookmark it for later when the need for this type of fic hits...as we all know there are times it's needed.

I only have one today and that's just because I have a bit to say about it as it holds a special place in my fandom heart.
HD Fan Fair (Career Fair) is open for prompts! They have openings for 250 prompts and so far have 153. Prompt closing is on June 30th. Claiming begins on July 1st.
First of all, I think we need to give a huge shout-out to Fan Fair mod @phoenixacid. This will be her 10th year of modding this fest. I do believe she worked on it even earlier. Anyone who's modded a fest before knows the dedication it takes to see it through. Her co-mod, @sassy-cissa has been involved since 2018.
Here's a little history about this Fest
This fest has been going on annually since 2009, with the exception of 2011. It was conceived by @marguerite26 and myself, with @vaysh11 and Jamie2109 soon joining in. I was unable to mod for personal reasons that first year and only partially the second...after that I pretty much left fandom. Back then, you really couldn't just start a fest when other established fests were already on the calendar. It was considered impolite and it would be posted on LJ about what an arse you were. LOL When hd_inspired closed shop, we jumped in and took their spot in Autumn. Fan Fair started with Career Fair and then moved on to Travel Fair. Since then, they've had Book (books mentioned in HP), Sex, Food, and Pottermore Fairs with repeats for Career, Travel and Food. Both Inspired and then Fan Fair were novel in being a prompt fest as opposed to an exchange fest like @hd-erised (back then it was hd_holidays). We felt it gave greater control to the authors to write to a prompt they liked as opposed to be assigned one, which from personal experience can cause angst and meltdowns. That is why it was called a Fair as opposed to a fest. A fest usually meant an Exchange Fest.
When I came back to fandom, I about cried seeing that @Phoenixacid had not only kept Fan Fair alive but it was thriving. I wrote for it that first year I came back in 2021, and I made a promise to read and comment on every fic and art piece posted for the Fairs. I only skipped one fic last year. It was brilliantly written but was beyond my comfort level for psychological horror. I don't listen to Podfics, I'm sorry to say. When I used to commute hours to and from work, I could but now I don't have the where-with-all to pay attention.
So go PROMPT!!!!! And give tons of love to the two mods!!!! Mods are the backbone of fandom.

Did you know the amazing @snowgall created and maintains a Drarry fanart archive at @snowingalway. She had noticed that fandom art of old was being lost and artists were leaving fandom. The pieces available for viewing are those that the artists have given her permission to archive. She personally contacted the artists to ask for such permission. I think when you visit the sight and view what she's saved, you too will be thrilled and indebted for what she's done for Drarry fandom. Please not she also posts and collect current works, too!

Reminders:
Each prompt can be claimed once for art and once for fic. You may also claim both art and fic together.
Currently all 200 prompts are marked with “Available for Art & Fic”. They will be changed to “Available for Art”, “Available for Fic”, or “Not Available” under Prompt Availability accordingly.
If you have submitted your first entry, you may claim another after July 31st (provided our maximum writer and/or artist capacity have not been reached).
Claiming by proxy is permitted.
You may claim your own prompt (please note we will only hold prompts marked self-prompting prompts for 24 hours).

How prompt claiming is going to work:

H/D Food Fair 2022 Prompting on the 5th of June!
Prompting Guide
For this year’s Fair we’d love for you to come up with prompts, write stories, create artworks and read podfics that feature:
any food of any kind – muggle or wizarding e.g. spotted dick, bouillabaisse, chocolate frogs, Japanese or Greek cuisine
any food-related occupation - e.g. baker, food taster, professional food forager
any food-related tropes - e.g. coffee shop AU, restaurant rivals, chef competition
But with an added twist! You must also include a travel element!
any food that originated outside of Britain (e.g. Indian cuisine, Sushi chef!Draco)
any setting outside of Britain (e.g. Michelin Inspector!Draco inspecting Harry’s restaurant in Budapest)
This means that your entries must feature food as the key component and travel as a secondary component!
On 5th June, the prompting submission form and display table will go live on LJ, DW, Tumblr and AO3 collection profile.
The form covers the following:
Food Theme: Include a type of food or food-related occupation/trope
Travel Theme: Include a non-British food or setting outside of Britain
Scenario: Give a scenario/setting/story inspiration
Era: Hogwarts Era, Post-Hogwarts, EWE, Epilogue-compliant or AU, or if that is left up to the creator
Optional Additions: List no more than three items/concepts/words to include in the fanwork
Maximum Rating: G to NC-17, or if that is left up to the creator
Rules and Guidelines:
You may submit ONE TO FIVE prompts a day.
Please submit each prompt separately through the prompting form.
To self-prompt, please submit your prompt during prompting period and claim your own prompt later.
Anyone can submit prompts. You don’t have to be a Fair participant to be eligible for prompting.
If you’ve made a mistake in your prompt submission, you may send an email to [email protected] to fix it.
Prompts will be automatically displayed (see sample at the following link).
This isn’t a gift fest; creators are not obligated to gift the work to the prompter, unless they choose to do so.
We only ask that creators are heavily inspired by the prompt; creators must not deviate from the food and travel themes listed but may adjust the prompt scenario as necessary.
A claiming form will be released later!

The 2021 Career Fair is now over and it has been an amazing ride!
We couldn’t do this without some truly wonderful people and we want to take this opportunity to thank them:
♥ To the authors, artists and podficcers - Thank you so much for all your efforts and for giving us such brilliant works year after year! We wouldn’t have a Fair without you!
The overall word counts and the artworks submitted for the Fair this year were amazingly lengthy as compared to the Fairs before (see this year’s statistics post). This Fair is not even a Big Bang but we see so many fics that goes beyond the usual 5-15k and comics that are pages long! You must have spent dozens, if not hundreds, of hours to create such beautiful pieces!
(Phoenix: In order to invest this much time and effort into telling Draco/Harry stories, you must all truly love the characters and enjoy what you’re doing (well, that or you’re a masochist). The shorter entries are no less wonderful and intricate as well! It brings me so much joy to see how passionate and committed people are to this pairing after so many years!)
♥ To our readers, commenters, and viewers - you guys bring the creators so much joy. We love and appreciate every single comment and kudos you have left! We hope we’ll continue to have your support for future Fairs!

H/D Career Fair 2021 Important Announcement
Dear Fans of the Fair!
There’s truly something in the water this year!
Normally at this stage we would only get around 60 claims, and the rest of the claims come trickling in slowly till August and we cap it at 100 claims. However, though the claims for 2021 have just been opened for 3 days, we already reached 89 claims (77 of which are fic claims, 4 are fic + art combined).
We are so thankful for your continued interest and support all these years!
To ensure that we are able to give every entry a chance to shine come October/November, we have to make these changes:
FICS and PODFICS claims will be capped early when we reach the 100th claim.
We will be reserving spots 96-100 for any of our returning published FIC or PODFIC participants from the previous years.
If spots 96-100 have not been claimed yet by returning participants by July 7th, we will make another announcement and open for 5 more FIC or PODFIC claims.
ART claiming will be stay open till July 31st.

The only career exceptions are:
Harry: Auror, Professor, Quidditch Player, Sex-Related Careers

However, similar careers are acceptable! You are free to have Harry working as a MOM Hit Wizard or Quidditch Stunt Coordinator; or Draco as a Apothecary Owner or Hogwarts Groundskeeper.

So I just found out that there are more people making works on AO3 with a million tags on them in protest to AO3 not removing that one fic (you know the one). I would just like to state my own personal opinion about that right up front: if you’re trolling AO3, no matter your reason for doing so, you’re the asshole.
I know we all call it AO3, but the a stands for Archive. It’s a site built on the premise that fanworks deserve to exist and shouldn’t be taken down, unless the author is making that decision for themselves.
This means that there are lots of works on AO3 that I think suck. There are works that are poorly written or boring or morally reprehensible. And guess what? All of that is protected because it’s not about a single work, it’s about fanworks in general and all of us having a place we can rely on to have our backs.
The whole point of AO3 is not deleting works just because someone complains about them. The work needs to violate the Terms of Service and if it doesn’t, then it shouldn’t be removed. The rules that protect me protect those other works too.
The volunteers at AO3 take the site’s goals and premise very seriously. They aren’t going to make snap judgements about a work, not even a work with a million tags. They also aren’t going to make snap judgements about implementing a limit on tags when there hasn’t been one before.
They need to talk things out and discuss the short and long term ramifications. They need to talk about where to draw the line, and how can they explain why they decided to draw the line there? Will this decision affect works that already exist on the Archive? What do we do about them? Those authors posted before this new rule came into being, so you can’t punish them for a rule that didn’t exist at the time.
Creating more works with the same issue just means that volunteer tag wranglers have even more work to do. Mass reporting a work that has already been reported just means that Policy & Abuse volunteers have even more work to do. If you fill up their lives with nonsense tags or repeat reports, you know what they can’t do? The thing that everyone (including them) wants them to be doing.
People who volunteer for AO3 also read on AO3. They are as annoyed about these works as you are. But making more work for them to do isn’t the answer. Being patient is. It’s going to take time for them to make decisions about things like tag limits. It’s going to take time for them to code the limit into the site. It’s going to take time for them to test the code and make sure it doesn��t break anything. And in the meantime:
Filter out the author and bookmark your filter in your browser so you don’t have to enter it every time.
Add the work-blocking code to your site skin so you never need to see that work again, as long as you’re logged in.
There are tools you can use to avoid the things you don’t want to see. Creating a bigger problem isn’t the solution. It’s just a dick move.

After getting locked out for a few days since the recent (bungled? | working-as-intended? | catastro-fuck-accident? | bro-gramming meltdown-event? ) cookies-change thing, I finally got back in. And my dashboard has been looking a bit, well, “off”. I couldn’t quite put my finger on what was wrong. Then I happened to look in the settings.
They’ve gone and done it again, and stealthily re-enabled an algorithmic timeline. Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaargh.
So if any of your dashboards are looking weird, suddenly flooded with irrelevant and annoying content, or completely-missing half the people who are normally there, it might be worth having a look in the settings.
Semi-related? I’m really starting to wish someone would ban social media algorithms, because this stuff is pure poison.
