I wish there were a universal, low-brainpower, nonverbal way to communicate to my friends that says "hey I'm thinking about you but I don't have anything to say, nor do I have the wherewithal for a conversation right now anyway" via text message but I'm so so so upset that the original Facebook messenger Poke feature was the closest to anyone getting the right idea

When people get a little too gung-ho about-
wait. cancel post. gung-ho cannot be English. where did that phrase come from? China?
ok, yes. gōnghé, which is…an abbreviation for “industrial cooperative”? Like it was just a term for a worker-run organization? A specific U.S. marine stationed in China interpreted it as a motivational slogan about teamwork, and as a commander he got his whole battalion using it, and other U.S. marines found those guys so exhausting that it migrated into English slang with the meaning “overly enthusiastic”.
That’s…wild. What was I talking about?

unavoidable that you will be the villain in someone else's story. You will be painted in an unfavorable light. You will be the irredeemable one. and all of this will happen despite how nice you might usually be or how kind or how respectful or how warm. and you will just have to move on.

thinking about that moment late Shadowbringers where Y'shtola expresses that she kind of wishes she too had been granted the gift of the Echo, that she might be able to peer into the WoL's heart, and juxtaposing it with this other moment before one of the dungeons that she's looking forward to being able to drop the air of absolute self-control that she's presented to the Night's Blessed and really cut loose and unleash her powers for a change, and it's like... both of these are more or less incidental dialogue, stray almost throwaway lines, and yet...
For as much as she found a place amongst the Night's Blessed, and for how content and comfortable she was with them, she still never really let them see who she is under the surface. She never felt so comfortable as to drop her tightly controlled presentation, to let the mask drop and show her heart in full. For as much as she identifies with, and misses them, she still never let them truly know her - not the way that Y'mhitra, or the real Master Matoya, or even the WoL does.
It makes me wonder if part of what she's wishing she had isn't necessarily so much the Echo itself as it is the ability to share her heart openly, to be able to just drop all the carefully constructed walls for a spell and bare her innermost thoughts and feelings without fear of being dismissed or judged for it.

one of my greatest pet peeves in fiction, and it is truly stupid I know, is that no one seems to understand how genuinely hard it is to kill someone via stabbing. stab wounds have a mortality rate of like 5%. especially abdominal stabbing. tv shows and movies show dudes getting stabbed one time in the lower abdomen with a tiny knife and then they fall over. like what did he die of precisely. that man died of Small Knife

Final Fantasy III Masterpost
It has recently occurred to me that, given how much I talk of Final Fantasy III, I should make a Masterpost for everything in one place.
Links
The DeepL translated FF3 remake unused dialogue
Two interviews for Final Fantasy III’s 30th Anniversary: Part 1 is with Hiromichi Tanaka and he is joined in Part 2 by Koichi Ishii, who describes some of the details that went into the sprites (including background lore elements).
“Final Fantasy Dictionary”: A Japanese fansite/wiki. It’s somewhat casual in tone has some interesting stuff regarding both characters and gameplay mechanics if you know Japanese or just use DeepL like I did. One of the sources I used in learning the NTT guidebook stuff.
http://ww5.et.tiki.ne.jp/~blueapple/game/a-ff3.htm: Another page that has NTT guide-centric info for FF3
A snippet of the interview at the back of the official Final Fantasy III DS strategy guide:
Part 1: Goes into the decision to give the protagonists new identities, renovations to the original and the Capacity Point/Job Adjustment Phase systems.
Part 2: Goes into the game’s difficulty, some of the jobs/job decisions and a scrapped PVP mode.
The “Creator’s Voice” interview for the remake: which goes into detail about certain decisions (JP only). The page linked discusses the influences FFXI had on the remake.

It's always risky killing off a character but if you have to, you must have them HAUNT the narrative. Let their death and absence be constantly felt at some level.

I had this floating around on my harddrive but never uploaded it. Drew this last year in January. Oops.
Anyway, replaying FFVIII back then made me realize what a terrible principal Cid is.
