Pros and Antis in HotD and aSoIaF Fandom: the breakdown around grey storytelling
I think I know why TB people struggle so much for understanding why TG is liked by people and it’s because fandom discourse has been so rotted away by “pro shippers” and “anti shippers” discourse that we’ve entered into a puritanical view of consuming media.
They see the media you consume as a direct reflection of the type of person you are and thus the characters you like must be similar to who you are as a person.
To a certain extent I get it, looking at a broad portfolio of media consumption can reveal a bit about a person. For example, I consume a lot of horror media. You can discern that I like being scared and the adrenaline that comes from it. But that’s only in a safe controlled situation where I can turn off the tv or monitor when it gets too much. I don’t like haunted houses, being alone at night, or even the dark.
Media is a safe place to explore different sides of humanity in a controlled setting where the only thing at risk is our own enjoyment. People can find that they like things in media that they wouldn’t like in real life. But this distinction is lost on a lot of fandom puritans. To them, media consumption is a political act. You reaffirm that you are a “good person” by watching the “good shows” and rooting for the “good guys”. To look upon a morally complex character or even the villain with interest and sympathy is thus to condone and support every action that character will be written to take.
But this idea of assuming moral righteousness from the characters you support in media because even harder to understand and justify when applied to stories like HotD and aSoIaF where every character possesses both good and evil. So how does a puritan fan reaffirm their belief that they are morally good in a series such as these? The fan will assign the idea oh moral correctness and superiority to the characters they like. Any bad, morally questionable, or straight up evil act the character commits will be justified as righteous no matter how the story frames those actions to the audience. The same is applied to characters these fans do not like. Every bad, morally questionable, or evil action is amplified to become the main character trait while any good, just, or morally righteous act is off written as either an evil act in disguise or any good to come out of the act should be attributed to another character. Any harm committed again the character is then down played as not that bad or actually deserved.
In HotD and aSoIaF, this fandom Puritanism mainly affects female characters.
In aSoIaF, we have characters such as Dany and Arya being framed as the morally righteous and just while characters such as Catelyn and Sansa are painted as villains. Weirdly this does not apply to actual villainous female characters likes Cersei. This could be because the books and show are very clear that her actions are evil and cruel, puritan fans do not feel insecure liking her as they feel secure that the story and thus other fans know she is a bad person and won’t assume liking her means viewing her as a good person. Characters such as Margery Tyrell and Arianne Martell are viewed with more complexity than other female characters but I bet once they come into conflict with beloved female characters, they will be viewed as villainous.
In HotD we see the same thing happening. Puritan fans see Rhaenyra as the perfect hero with any negative action being just or not her fault while Alicent is painted as more evil than the step mother from Cinderella who, despite all evidence to the contrary, wanted to be queen and this deserves everything that she gets.
This is why so many people have to explain to puritan fans that liking characters like Sansa, Catelyn, Alicent, Aegon, or Aemond does not make one bastardphobic, a rape apologist, or anti feminist. I also think it explains why these fans can’t except that their favorite characters have done wrong and hurt people. They can’t accept criticism or critique of their favorite character because to them it’s not another person’s reading of a fictional character, it’s someone judging them on their morals.
Puritanical fans interlock their identity and sense of self with the characters they like and struggle to separate criticism of those characters as criticism of themselves as a person.

> After getting annoyed at Sanji, he bounces his eyebrow and makes a kiss sound as you leave.

> If you take away Buggy’s head so he can’t reattach himself, he definitely talks for as long as possible about nothing until you’re annoyed enough to put his head back.
> You and Usopp made eye contact as he once tried to help Sanji’s dish and accidentally dropped the whole seasoning bottle in. He slinked away, keeping eye contact like a secret promise not to say a word.
> Luffy insists on braiding your hair just for it to become somehow knotty and matted within ten minutes.
> Zoro watched you fall on your ass in combat, laughing, then getting accidentally smacked by Luffy’s extended arm and getting swung forward twenty feet.
> Sanji has never denied carrying you bridal style and has even done so while in the middle of combat.
> Nami gives a side eye to you as indication of something incredibly stupid is about to happen at the hands of one of the others.
> Luffy extends his arm and smacks the top part of a door as he enters, trying to prove to you how tall he is.
> Buggy sleepwalks and occasionally detaches in his sleep and you’ll be jumpscared by a random chopped off arm at your bedside.
> Mihawk started by just purposely bumping into you while he walks when you first met but now puts his hands on your arms and guides you aside.
> Usopp likes to take your hand and trace letters on your palm and have you guess what he said.
> Sanji has bought the same color outfit that you did so you two can match. He wants to be someone’s arm candy/accessory to an event.
> Zoro gets seasick and blames it on Sanji and his cooking just to have something to complain about Sanji for.

Ok, so let me get this straight. My son's bully cuts out his eye after him and three other kids jumped on him ARMED, next thing I know there's an eyeball in a tray and said son is disassociating and wincing in pain while getting stitched up, and the problem is that he called obvious bastards bastards? And I'm supposed to like... Shut up when my abusive husband basically spits on me and my plead for justice? And I'm evil because I rightfully lashed out? And... I'M the one that needs to apologize?

Monkey D. Luffy
Please do not entrust this man to handle a wheelchair. He is literally running full-force while pushing you around.
Absolutely thinks it’s a game, laughing playfully while you’re holding on for dear life. (He literally thinks you’ll be fine no matter what 😭😭).
Has asked once or twice to be the one in the wheelchair because he thinks it’s like being on a ride. (He tried to do a trick and fell on his ass).
He is a sweetheart though <3 He’s trying to keep your spirits up and make you feel involved in all the action.
Roronoa Zoro
Is completely serious in protecting you. His eyes are on complete watch at everyone around you two.
Absolutely death stares anyone coming close even if they have no intention of harm.
NEVER leaving your side, especially in public. Consider this scary dog privileges with Zoro.
Sometimes forgets that you're in a wheelchair and walks too fast. He panics that he's lost you before realizing that you were just around the corner.
Usopp
Usopp tried to keep careful when handling your wheelchair if you need it.
He's definitely the one to keep his positive energy alive while with you. He's cracking jokes and sometimes moves your wheelchair along with his hums of a song.
Is the gentlest when it comes to picking you up and out of the wheelchair to set you down when you request to be. He likes feeling useful to you.
In the presence of danger, this is the equivalent of Shaggy and Scooby-Doo the way he just scurries off full-speed with you.
Vinsmoke Sanji
Sanji is usually the one to guide you if you're in the Strawhats. He keeps a steady pace and isn't reckless at all.
Takes any opportunity to be close. When standing still, he puts his head onto yours. While moving, he likes to hold your hand to keep close.
He is the one to formally complaint if public spaces aren't wheelchair-accessible while apologizing profusely for the establishment's insolence. (he's overdramatically crying)
Shanks
Not once will he ever make mention of it (that isn't about accommodations/preferences) nor treat you differently.
Always tries to make you feel involved, especially in group settings where he's always right beside you.
Normally sits down as well to keep eye level with you rather than standing over you. (He'll put his hat on you while keeping conversation going).
In threatening situations, his top priority is to get you safe before he engages.
Buggy
Like Luffy, do not entrust this man with your safety pls 😭 He's spinning the wheelchair way too fast and you have to hold on for dear life.
If ever you feel insecure about using a wheelchair, he's immediately setting you into the audience and creating an elaborate show to cheer you up.
If you insist on going somewhere on your own (which he only allows if he's still close because he worries), he'll still detach his hand so he can place it above yours.
Mihawk
Definitely the most trustworthy and safe. If you want to be moved, he will. If you wish to be independent, then he'll respect it.
When it comes to other people, they aren't important in his eyes since his focus is you and your comfort.
While he is stubborn, he is understanding. Not once has he shamed you at all. Even in his normally judging stares, they seemed to soften with you.
In regards to other people starting fights or trying to take advantage of you, he has no hesitation in defending you. It's basically on sight.

Small, sweet partners was always his type. He just loves fulfilling the typical male stereotype of being a protector over his partner.
When he turned the corner, looking to finish off the last victim of the lot within his abandoned town, only to see something better.
He watched as you effortlessly were carrying the body of the victim over your shoulder like it was nothing. Head completely caved in, more of a mass of flesh and blood than an identifiable person. Your other hand held a bloodied hammer.
Bo was completely still, but not of fear. He was standing there like a man who had completely re-fallen in love again.
His eyes were shining as his grin grew wide. Approaching, he was nothing but prideful.
His voice was light with a chuckle, thumb brushing away the blood on your cheek. “Shit, sweetheart… Never knew a pretty girl like you was so… strong. I love it.”
Vincent Sinclair
Vincent was overprotective a lot of the time. He was insistent you were never near his work nor would you be involved when victims were in town.
He loved you too much to have you a part of him and his brothers’ work.
Vincent was slightly startled, hearing the door of his studio open. He knew both his brothers were out.
Seeing it was you, he approached, silently looking down at you. You could tell there was an air of disappointment at you being in his studio when he didn’t want you to be.
A ragged, strained voice spoke from behind his mask, “Why?”
With a shrug of your shoulders and a smile, you walked past him, further into the studio. “Bo said he needed a box in here.”
Watching you walk past, his eyes were hidden but widened as he watched you easily lift up a heavy table to look under it, scrolling past the items underneath it.
He approached confused but didn’t stop you. “Oh! Here it is!” Your arms held up a filled box of tools and parts.
Vincent followed you around curiously for the rest of the day like a shadow. He was completely fascinated by your strength, wanting to see it again.
Once you returned from helping Bo, Vincent couldn't let go of you. He kept his arms around you, head on your shoulder. His quiet, strained voice simply said, "Show me again... Please?"
Hannibal Lecter
Hannibal always held an air of curiosity about you. Your sweet nature was like an untainted part of his life. A woman so far from himself.
Hannibal’s curiosity was never-ending. He took advantage of his intelligence to learn as much as he could. Stalking, Manipulative behaviors in “therapy”, etc.
You were almost always at his place. He liked it better that way although it provided some maintenance when it came to his extracurricular activities.
Hannibal had been making another of his fancy dinners for the two of you. The presentation had to be precise and perfect. Presentation was half the work for him.
He absentmindedly spoke while you were cutting vegetables beside him, “I have not set the chairs. I will do so in a moment, my love.”
Immediately, you wanted to assist. You always liked helping out. “I’ve got it!”
Watching you walk away, he expected to finish his current task before going off to assist you. Instead, he looked up to the doorway to see you easily walking past with a heavy wooden chair in each hand, easily carrying the two like they were just a stack of papers.
A small smirk curled at his lips as his hands slowed in their work. He whispered to himself, knowing his eager curiosity was not wasted, “You are… a delight, my love. You will make for something truly wonderful.”
Will Graham
Will was someone who was vigilant and aware. His mind always raced a million miles an hour with tiny observations and connections.
There was something about you but he just couldn’t place it.
But, what was there to prove? You were sweet and kind, seeming so far from what he knew. That was part of why he held love for you—You weren’t him.
Will was in his head again, silently panicked by his own mind. It was torturous to live in a prison of his own violent thoughts.
You were someone who always noticed. Always could pick up when these episodes started.
Holding his hands and speaking sweetly to him to draw him back to reality, unfortunately, wasn’t working this time.
His eyes kept darting back and forth while his breath quickened. With him standing still, quivering, you had to make the choice.
With simple ease, you picked Will up bridal style, walking away with him.
It took him a moment to realize what happened, breaking out of being inside his head. His eyes just stared at you when he was placed onto his bed, sweat drenching his forehead.
He broke out into a small smile, absentmindedly licking his lips, as was his habit. "I... didn't know you could do that."
"Is it a bad thing?"
"No. It's... really attractive, actually."
Thomas Hewitt
Tommy was always a protector. Toward his family, it was evident. A given. Toward you, it was an inherent need.
The last thing he'd ever want is for you to be hurt, especially when victims come around.
He would lead you and Luda Mae into a room, having you two barricade it while him and Hoyt took care of the unfortunate victims who made their way to the wrong home.
You waited, albeit anxiously. And it only grew once you heard a loud thud followed by Hoyt's yelling.
"Goddammit, Tommy! The fuck are you doin'?"
Immediately you knew something went wrong. Despite Luda Mae trying to keep you in the room, you ripped away the makeshift barricade on the door and rushed out.
Tommy was on all fours, holding the side of his head. A man, you assumed one of the few victims, held a hammer in his hand. He quivered holding it, as if horrified by his own self-defense.
Without thinking, you grabbed the nearest chair, pulling back and cracking it hard against the man. Aimed for his head, he dropped to the floor unconscious by the impact.
You rushed over to Tommy's side, panicked. "Tommy! Tommy! God- Are you okay?"
His arm just instinctively shot out and held you to his body, protecting you in his mind. He opened his eyes and looked past you to see the victim with broken wooden pieces of the chair on top of him.
With his mask on, his expression was hidden. But inside, his heart warmed at how you were strong enough to protect him too. His own protector.

This new media/bookish trend of writing vaguely soppy "morally grey" villains with tragic backstories + sanitizing evil and making it safe enough for the soft gay uwu crowd by adding that "this guy is mean, racist and aids a fascist govt but AT LEAST he SUPPORTS LGBTQ!" means that nobody can properly enjoy well written evil and unhinged villains in media anymore, without some 20 year old on Twitter writing essays about how liking these characters means you're a Nazi sympathizer, child abuse apologist etc.
A lot of viewers can only digest and champion the "misunderstood tragic villains" who deserve "redemption arcs"- Azula, Jinx, s8 Dany, s4 Villanelle, the Darkling etc. On the other hand, deliciously and gruesomely irredeemable villains in darker, more mature media become "one-dimensional" or "mid" because they are unpalatable to fandom culture.
There is a weird pressure upon creators to make all characters likeable, unproblematic and "relatable" by the same hammy tropes: tragedies (dead partner, daddy issues), armchair progressive politics (Fire Nation is Evil but it has Women Soldiers in the Military, Feminist Icons!), or "I hate everyone but you" style dark romance (Daemyra and Alarkling). I am sorry but if the only villain you can appreciate is an "unproblematic", misunderstood one, you are NOT ready for media consumption outside of mainstream YA fantasy and children's literature.
This is the reason why tame liberal progressive books like The Priory of the Orange Tree and The Jasmine Throne gets shelved as "morally grey sapphics" while She Who Became the Sun and Baru Cormorant are called problematic and get negative reviews. This is the reason why CSM fans cry and sob about Makima being a villain and doing villainous things ("Omg how dare she not ask for consent??" She is a literal devil from hell, a war criminal and an allegory of govt. authority abuse of power. Sorry she isn't a feminist.)
You're free to filter the tags, but that's on you and nobody else. They are painted as villains. They are not misrepresentation. It's not on creators to make you feel comfortable about their evil characters. "A truly cool villain must be willing to murder but respect their wife and not be racist"– ok go back to reading AO3!!!! Personally I need more Makima Chainsaw Man and Lee Woo-jin Oldboy and Dorothy Daniels A Certain Hunger and Tywin Lannister ASOIAF and Logan Roy Succession!!!! Make villains nasty and unlikeable and unpalatable and bigoted and evil and gut-wrenchingly unpleasant again!!!

Please be mature adults and do not bring up your specific traumas, triggers and personal information to misdirect a conversation about fictional villains and guilt trip everyone by strawman arguments. This is about FICTIONAL VILLAINS. NOT invalidating your personal trigger.

hello anon!! :) I do write yandere characters (ex: Corey Cunningham’s Headcanons). I just refrain from darker topics like noncon, heavy abuse, kinks that relate to de-aged/childlike behavior, anything related to children, etc.
Yandere behaviors like stalking, murder, manipulative/possessive speech, isolating their S/O, etc. can be written about. (I usually add warnings at the top of posts for what will be talked about so you don’t have to be jumpscared by the content lmao)

Zoro likes to keep you in his lap, hand on the back of your neck to keep you close. You aren't leaving his lap until he lets you.
He likes to tug on your hair slightly to pull you away slowly and watch as saliva connects your lips to his before snapping.
Nami
Nami likes to take her time and be more romantic about it. It starts off as loving pecks with a small smile on her face before it turns into long, slow kisses.
She likes feeling every bit of warmth and softness each time your lips lock to hers. Her hand usually holds the back of your head while her other hand is at your waist.
Her body melds into yours, pressing against you while you're against the wall just so she can feel every part of you that she loves.
Vinsmoke Sanji
Like Zoro, depends on his mood. If he's all too excited to see you, he's diving in deep and smothering you. If it's meant to be a deliberately romantic moment, it's a slow, lasting kiss to make your head fog up at the feeling.
Sanji is the most vocal; whispering sweet nothings against your lips as he's so close to them but just won't kiss you to keep you desperate for him.
Likes to bite your bottom lip after giving you a small kiss and pull it to watch your breath hitch and whine for him to keep kissing you rather than just teasing.
Usopp
Usopp never thought he'd make it this far so safe to say that he's nervous. His hands keep switching between cupping your face, gripping at your thighs or holding your waist.
It's easy for him to lose himself, getting completely wrapped up in the moment. His eyes are shut tight as he tries to just focus on how warm you felt.
He likes when you take control for the most part. Having you control the speed or push him against the wall and lifting his shirt has him immediately in love and ripping his shirt off to make you happy.
