Greetings. You may call me the Mapmaker. I am on a mission to learn about all currently known timelines and their residents. I hope you would not mind answering a few questions.
Interview: Mason
[START]
I noticed that you have shared a lot of information about your garden and gardening experiences, but very little about yourself. Who or what got you into gardening in the first place?
Oh, howdy! I have been eyeing your work for a while. Good work, I can commend it. By all means, you may ask me any questions you would like. Some of us do not have rocket science jobs. Here's a secret: I was raised at the Glen, actualy. Grew up around a bunch of plants, and our house had a moss ceiling! From the Polytrichaceae family if my memory serves me right, mainly from the creeping rootstalks.
Our family could not afford to make a living in the Refuge, so we had humble lives as farmers and traders with the glenfolks. I was their only child however, and they insisted they did not want me to live the same life as them. Fortunately for me, I had a stronger way with words, and I got to study plant biology. Being around a family that grows plants for a living, you can guess how that went. Then, I finally got the chance to study abroad. Had to leave my family however, which was crushing at first. But, being able to explore around the Refuge with my future colleagues was absolutely immaculate. That's how I met Kip! Now, I'm here. Still surrounded by plants, the only difference being that I'm alone now, heh. I'm living my life though, and a secret is that living a best life is never a thing. It's only living a life around the things you care about dearly, so that your issues are smaller. Whew, long one! Sorry for the autobiography, I get chatty a lot. Hope it answers your question.

Around two years or so now. Life hasn't been the most exciting since, but I like it. It's calm, it's relaxing, and I get to enjoy life, y'know? I still have some ambitions; cross-breeding and creating new plant life, mainly. Getting to work with some cool people would be amazing too, but at least I get to set my own times. I know this is an interview about me, but the questions you're asking doesn't really sound all that timeline-y to me. Do you just infer all that from my life experience? What can you make of it?

Sure! As you know, different plants require different factors for an optimal health, such as light, water, climate condition, and acidic levels in soil. When the sun went out, at first there was a panic among us botanists that the plants would die. There's no bank for preserving the species of plants, and with the sun gone it would be weeks before they all perish. There was a rush to get as many unique plant species as we can, so amongst the initial panic, we had to set up a program where we would collect samples of unique plant species and used our homes to store them, while we requested Kip to make a bank for us. It was not pretty, everyone was stressed there including me. We were already in fear from the sun's disappearance, our family and friend's contacting us, every social outlet was filled to the brim with panic, and now there is an added stress of making sure the plantlife in this world doesn't wilt away before our very eyes. Especially Kip. Poor girl had to deal with a lot. People were terrified and pressed her way too much and it got to her. Stars, I remember her being so upset. Every second of just us talking felt like a waste of time to her, and she'd treat us like we offended her when we just wanted to ask how she was. I can't come close to describing the horrors we felt. Eventually, all of that subsided. We did manage to preserve a lot of species, around the thousands. It helped that we set bounties for every species you can get, so a lot of people were helping us around the world which is fantastic. It was a rare light among the time of darkness. The problem then however is that artificial light simply cannot compare to sunlight, because the energy provided by the sun is more intense than artificial light. Thus, the efficiency of plant growth was significantly staggered, and threatened some plants to wither. Fortunately though, Kip was able to make said bank for us and constructed a bunker with fluorescent lights, which is optimal for growth since it has a wider spectrum. Emptied out our homes too, which is an added plus. Sometimes, you can have too many plants in your home.

how do you....eat?
It's rather embarrassing, but I insert the food in my pot and let it decompose, akin to fertilizers. Trust me on this! I can taste food just fine this way. I can also photosynthesize, but it doesn't properly give sustenance to my body. It only gives me energy, equivalent to caffeine, but it doesn't make me less hungry! Thank you for asking, though.

Thank you so much for this information! All of it is truly fascinating, and I am glad you took the time to relay it to me. How does your kind treat and breed your animals? Do they eat anything special? Was phosphor really used during farming, even before the sun went out? I know that phosphor lights and the natural sunlight can give different effects to plants, but I am not exactly sure what those differences are. Maizes do sound interesting, do you think it has a cultural significance to the spirit of the Glen? Please, send me samples of anything! Everything, if you wouldn't mind. It's engrossing to see how farming is done on other regions, with different bits of culture and technology, and of course, unique results! Glowing moss sounds interesting, using phosphor for them is brilliant! Could other plants be potentially bred using phosphor to also exhibit bioluminescent traits?

Howdy! I never got to visit the Glen much, but I wanted to know more about your kind! How do you reap the resources you have? Do you have a rancher? What does your kind typically indulge on?" end id)
@nelumbo-lotuses Hello Mason :> I'm not sure if you're the one in my world, but I'll do my best to answer. Before I last went to sleep, when the Glen was more intact, we did a fair bit of both ranching & farming. About half the Glen denizens engaged in small-scale farming of this kind, & everyone engaged in moss farming (more on this below). The chief livestock was - flips through a book - rams for milk & wool, & chickens for eggs & meat. I think some of the ranchers moved here, actually! There's one guy across the way who I keep hearing baaing noises from his window... As for what we indulge in, meat soups! Chicken, to be precise. Ram is too gamey unless you slow cook it.
Anyway, farming! I figure you'll be most interested in this subject. Sadly, I don't know everything, & my books that had the best info on this were lost in the floods. I do know the glenfolk used to farm a lot more before the Sun went away, but I couldn't tell you what plants. I think there is a seed vault somewhere - I hope it's still intact. But anyways - for as long as I can remember, farming has always been more like... small-scale gardening aided by phosphor lamps. Plants tend to grow pretty sickly unless they're the special variant we bred for low light, & even then they're still rather small. What we do grow is various nuts, root vegetables like potatoes & carrots, & of course, maize! While I love nuts, our maize was my favorite crop. We bred them to produce way more seeds than usual for both replanting & eating, & the seeds are delicious. The maize itself we made into bread! Tasty tasty seedbread :> I miss it, truth be told. They grow maize here in the Refuge, in special hydroponic bays, but the bread they make with it just isn't quite the same :< Hopefully with the Sun back & the Glen being slowly repaired, we'll be able to get some again, among other crops.
Now, I promised I'd mention moss farming, & I wouldn't dare leave it out. It's what I know most about, after all! Much like the phosphor shrimp that the Barrens bred for harvesting phosphor, the Glen bred special mosses that harvest phosphor from the soil & thrive in low-light environments. Best of all, they're bioluminescent - they glow!! Fortunately, we have another variant of moss, that mostly grows on the ground & on the outside of our structures, that we've bred for food. It's quite good, actually! A little sweet, even. Anyway, the glowing moss we harvest & store in these little terrarium lamps, so they can provide light for crops & things. It's really cool! I'm not mobile enough to return to the Glen, but I'm sure someone there could ship you a sample.
Hope that answers everything! It was nice to have a normal conversation. I'm kinda helping to solve a crisis at the moment, & this was a breath of fresh air. Would love to chat again sometime!

Did somebody tell you to send those asks?
No? I feel strange though, somehow I felt compelled to ask a whole bunch of people. Guess I told myself to send those asks!

Well said! Sharing information to others is how I feel we as a collective mind get to grow and improve on each other, and over a long period of time, those improvements can make large changes to the entire world! Let the seeds grow, then let time be its water.
Howdy! I wanted to ask, how do you have a lot of care and passion into what you are interested in? I personally love what I am doing, but honestly, it kinda grows out of me overtime. Not a tender heart can really be a gardener for a long time. Seeing your posts made me feel a little better, so thank you!
That is a lovely message. I guess it's a matter of resonating and tryint to find meaning in everything and watch it grow. It is maybe even more fulfilling to share with others and get the chance to see their own perspective on things. They can find something meaningful you wouldn't have seen on your own, and that is always a good present.

Ah, thank you so much! Greatly appreciated. I have been studying a lot in the biology of plants, and I have been completely engrossed by it! I'd like to tell you all sorts of fun trivia, but I myself am busy. Time hasn't been kind to me.
Howdy! I have been enamored by the stories you write, and I was just wondering if you have any advices for a beginner like me! I mainly want to write thesis papers for plants I am researching, but I figured to ask anyway! A guide, perhaps?
I suppose my only advice is to keep writing and researching, especially on a real life topic such as plantlife!
