I have not posted much during my convalescence for plain lack of interest in social media. I oscillate between planning to become less virtually "distant" and refusing to be a "product" (although it's difficult not to become one in this day and age, when your work relies in being in the public eye), squeazing myself to the bone in order for people to see my work like before. I lost interest in the discussions, especially political, since they have not taken most people to a place of reflection or change - rather they have made them even angrier and attached to their views, no matter how twisted. But I have been active, or at least the most one can be when still in some amount of physical pain. I finished a commission, I am resuming paintings, I am writing, and my band will be back to practice this weekend. Not bad. I was recently commissioned to do a reproduction of a work from ten (?) years ago, "Persephone". It's impossible to recreate a work of art with perfect likeness, especially when there's some expressive mark making involved, but I think I am doing a good job of copying myself... except for the better grasp of anatomy and domain of the oil painting technique. It has been an interesting exercise of awareness of my own evolution as a painter. "Ursa Major" popped up in my mind before I even started dreaming that work. Sometimes the titles to my pieces come first. Sometimes they are given to me by them. Sometimes, piece and title intermingle during the process, and the title gains new layers of meaning. I want my pieces to be poetry and I want the titles to be part of the whole idea. I spent time dialoguing with the characters in my paintings, as soon as they arrive. I listen. Right now I am looking at the eyes of the Great she-bear. Distant and cold piercing eyes. She knows pain, and she knows the strength of the land before her ascension. She contains galaxies. But she still bleeds. Many times passing the point of what could be just perfect for a particular piece is so easy due to our ideals of what it "should be". This is a lesson I seem to never learn. I wish I hadn't covered this one in gesso and wax abstracts. It was nice just the way it was, with just the right amount of flaws. No oils covering the graphite, perhaps just a little to enhance the highlights.
