Note
First of all, you're amazing for running this blog and helping so many people with their problems!! So I have this issue, where I very much want to have diversity in my books, so I have several characters that I write who are a not cis/straight. However, I'm not sure how obvious I should make their sexuality/gender. I don't want to throw in in the readers faces repeatedly, but I want it to be clear. Any advice? (I really hope this isn't offensive. Tell me if it is so I can do better next time!!)

Oof, this is not an easy topic and i’m not a writing tip blog but i’ll try my hand at it.
First of all, representation is cool and important so i’m glad you want to diversify your stories! Kudos for that.
Secondly, different people have different tastes in regards to LGBT rep:
Some people want characters that unmistakably articulate their identity, and feel empowered and Seen when the narrative surrounding the character’s sexual/gender identity is very explicit.
And some people want the character’s identity to be not a Big Deal or/and are characters who don’t fit in boxes and where there’s more leeway for interpretation.
Both are equally valid desires!
[Personal preference: i adore unrealistic, everyone-is-gay-there’s-no-homophobia fantasy settings; but i also really love realistic, complex explorations of sexuality and gender and prejudice set in our actual world. Depends on my emotional availability. It’s cool when there’s enough stories that deal with LGBT topics in different ways that i can pick some depending on my mood!]
I guess in the end it really depends on the story you want to tell, and how the characters themselves deal with their sexual/gender identity. I’d worry less about your reader’s perspective and more about what feels true to the story and to the characters in it. As long as you don’t actively gloss over it, i think you’re good.
Things i’d advise Not To Do:
1. rely on stereotypes to convey a character’s sexual/ gender identity (if you’re not very familiar with certain identities or stereotypes yourself maybe get a sensitivity reader that can give you pointers. Also, research!
2. making a character’s sexual/gender identity the only interesting thing about them/their main defining character traits. That’s very boring and reductive.

As you might of noticed, I’ve had serious issues with my laptop lately, and honestly it’s frustrated me to tears multiple times. It’s been on its way out for a long time, we all know that, and whilst I really didn’t want to do it, I think I finally need to just make this post.

Writing Tip June 4th
A list of body language phrases.
I’ve included a very comprehensive list, organized by the type of body movement, hand and arm movements, facial expressions etc. In some cases, a phrase fits more than one heading, so it may appear twice. Possible emotions are given after each BL phrase unless the emotion is indicated within the phrase. (They are underlined for emphasis, not due to a hyperlink.)
Note: I’ve included a few body postures and body conditions as they are non-verbal testimony to the character’s physical condition.
Have fun and generate your own ideas.:-)
Eyes, Brows and Forehead
arched a sly brow: sly, haughty
blinked owlishly: just waking, focusing, needs glasses
brows bumped together in a scowl: worried, disapproving, irritated
