My very first animation! ⭐️⭐️⭐️ This took me nearly a week to put together, from drawing and coloring each frame to trimming and synchronizing the audio as best I could. The latter comes from a Youtube video of Bruno's voice actor John Leguizamo hosting "The Daily Show", mixed with a clip of "Songbird" by Kenny G.

Did a full flat re-color for the other half of my entry for @encanto-extended-edition AU week.
Scandal AU starts out a couple years before the movie.
Carlos Bardales wife Mercedes dies in childbirth, and Elena winds up watching little Paola thanks to her Tía Pilar meddling and putting the bug that her nights were free in Carlos' ear. She means well. After all, the last man her sobrina almost married as well as Elena's father were built like oxen: rough around the edges and a little crude, but ultimately harmless, and quite handsome. Carlos Bardales hits all those marks, at least on the surface.
And Elena, being a big softy and thinking she'll never have kids, bites the bullet and marries the bastard even though she can't stand him, because she loves that little girl. It's a disaster from the start, but Paola is such a sweet tempered infant that Elena grins and bears the rough attention and loveless judgement for her sake.
Carlos is a nasty piece of work, but he's *crafty* about it, so no one suspects anything, not even Dolores. No one suspected with his first wife Mercedes after all. And Elena is too proud, too tired, and too ashamed to do anything but hide the bruises and carry on as best she can. She frees Chacha in fear of the bird's life, and pays dearly for it, her only open act of defiance. Her primo Julio takes over care of the bird and her horse Ladrillo for fear of what hwr husband might do. He sees, but cant go against Elena's word for fear of driving her away.
Her presence in town slowly diminishes. First the dance hall, then her friends save for business. Then her trips out, and she has to depend on Gustavo Perez and the other traders for her supplies. By the time Antonio Madrigal's birthday, even her Tía Pilar is starting to worry, since Elena hasn't visited since Navidad.
Then the movie happens, Bruno is back, and Elena is miserable. She and Bruno never got beyond talking about books, but she's pined after him for years, not even able to stop once she'd married Carlos. It's easy to love a stranger when all that's waiting for you at home is a brute.
Through a lucky combination of Carlos spending too many nights out drinking, Bruno spending far too long in the library because he's genuinely worried, and Paola being watched for the night, Elena breaks and confesses her feelings. She doesn't reveal the abuse, but Bruno isn't stupid. He knows he can't say much for her, neither knowing how the town will react to the accusations laid against Carlos, who is well liked in town for the show he puts on.
Bruno's heart breaks for her, and he winds up admitting that he had a bit of an attraction to her, before he disappeared. The gifts haven't returned yet and the house is still under construction, so there's still a lot of guilt on his shoulders about the miracle. He figures he's going to hell for a lot of things by that point anyway, and dives in.
He kisses her first, promises he'll take the risk and responsibility and that they'll be careful, and Elena can't help herself, feeling cared about for the first time in years.
They strike up an affair. Anyone with eyes can see Elena is miserable, but getting a divorce in the Encanto is hard, and she's the only mother Paola has ever known. When Señor Madrigal starts staying at the bibliotheca for hours on end no one who cares for her bats an eye, always suspicious of her change in character. Whe she starts to smile and hum again during her work day, well, that's just Elena having a good day, and if it seems like Señor Madrigal has a key to the shops, no he doesn't, how silly. If Elena is suddenly much harder to reach during her lunch hour, well, little Paola is growing up and she's probably just working on things for her. That Señor Madrigal, who's always kept rats, no matter what anyone thought of it, starts appearing with a brown parrot that looks strangely familiar? Well, Señor Madrigal had always been an oddball, and the children love Tango who does tricks during Lunes de Lectura.
There's a few months of secret bliss and silent shame, though that second part becomes less and less important ad time wears on. Despite the cloak and dagger nature of their relationship, it's startlingly healthy, if a little secluded. Bruno finds ways to do odd jobs around the bibliotheca even once the miracle is restored, and Elena is asked by Pepa and Julieta to act as a tutor for their youngest three children. None of them need it, but the extra money keeps Carlos off her back, Paola is able to make friends with Antonio. That she stays a little longer than needed is never spoken of, and the adults outside of Alma all turn a blind eye to what is happening.
They don't get discovered until Elena falls, impossibly she thinks, pregnant, and Carlos puts two and two together, watching her getting sick one morning at the café and seeing Bruno too close and to familiar with his concerns.
It leads to a huge confrontation in the town square, and despite the damage to their reputation it may cause, even Alma can't stand to see whats going on, and the Madrigals all come to Elena's defense. Once people see the bruises and Carlos has been taken away, Julieta reveals the vision, there's not a person in town save for the remnants of Carlos' family can say anything against Bruno and Elena outside of the usual salacious gossip. Affairs have happened before, and while they can't ever *really* be justified in the eyes of the church, this is the closest one has ever come.
It does have a happy ending. Carlos gets thrown out, and without his cousin's help just *disappears* into the jungle.
Before the pregnancy is obvious Elena's marriage to Carlos is annulled thanks to the vision. The Padre goes a bit old school and says it's some proof that she was promised to Bruno from the get go, so her marriage to Carlos just...never happened because it wasn't seen as legitimate even to the miracle or the sands of time.
Elena fights to keep little Paola, who's all of 2 and has no idea what's going on, but doesn't miss angry papí and adjusts well. In the aftermath Carlos' primo Manuel tries to take her, stating hes the only *real* family she has left, but she's taken in by the the church instead, so proper custody can be determined.
Bruno adopts her as his own, finalizing it in secret with Sister Santiaga's help, only telling Elena after he proposes to her properly and she's accepted. Their own wedding is private and quiet, and because Bruno isnt as wary to use his gift, they forsee the issues woth Elena's delivery and the triplets are born right on schedule, early but healthy and with Elena not scaring the family half to death with bloodloss, but she and Bruno agree 4 is enough and stop there.
Paola is thrilled to be a big sister, turning to Antonio for advice, and the five youngest all become thick as theives in the first three years leading up to Paola's gift ceremony.
Since Paola's the first adopted child in the family, there's questions about whether she'll get a gift, but 3 years later, like clockwork, there's a door.
Paola is very quiet, and she hated yelling. Her gift is basically being able to create areas of silence, with varying degrees of strength. Naturally, she and Dolores become very close, and she becomes a favorite babysitter across the Encanto.
Bruno and Elena have a long, happy life together, and after a few years the way they got together becomes a running joke in the family rather than a mark of shame. Even Alma can't stay cold towards Elena after the triplets are born and Paola gets a gift, because she can't deny that she's good for the family and her son

So, I got this idea on a trip to visit some friends out in California, when we went to a fantastic little romance bookstore called The Ripped Bodice and I spent my time admiring all of the beautiful cover art, from the classic clinch cover to more modern graphic illustrations.
I thought, what would Verde Visión look like if it had one of those illustrated contemporary romance novel covers? And I had so much fun trying to capture that look!
At first, I sketched another, more spoilery version that had fun clues about plot points hidden in the details before I settled on this design. Maybe I'll make that version someday, but for now I've been enjoying reader reactions when they get to the first reveal. 😉

When Bruno first meets Noelle in “La Rata Y El Profeta”
Art by the wonderful NS artwork 😍💚✨
I’m just waiting for my AO3 to come through and then I will finally be posting the first two chapters of my new fic 🥹💚
But in the mean time, here’s a little snippet from the draft of my first chapter!
For context, Diego is one of Bruno’s oldest and most loyal rats 🥹🐀
The moment Noelle meets Bruno, draft:
Suddenly Noelle felt a shift with the floor boards, causing her to lose balance and tumble down. She lifted her head up to see a large shadow appear from behind a tacky, red arm chair that towered over them. Noelle covered her eyes startled as she helplessly began to shake.
“Don’t worry chico” Diego placed his paw on Noelle’s shoulder to try and calm her.
“Oh hey mi amigos, I was wondering where you had all gone!” The shadow spoke, his voice soft and containing a slight titter.
She opened her eyes and looked up to see a curious and unkempt looking man kneeling above her.
“Well, who do we have here hey?”
Bruno smiled and slowly rested his hand in front of her. Noelle looked over at Diego who nodded his head reassuringly before she stood up and allowed herself to fall into Bruno’s palm, instantly feeling the warmth of his skin as he gently scooped her up.
“Looks like you’ve had a rough time”
He slouched down in his chair and began trailing his finger across her fur which felt so comforting to Noelle. She couldn’t help but notice he smelt so good too; with hints of sage and sandalwood. He pulled a handkerchief out from his pocket and began to softly wipe the mud off her fur whilst humming to himself. Noelle smiled and closed her eyes as she listened to the sound of his voice which seemed to embrace her with a feeling of peace and safety.
“Wow, rubia! You have very pretty fur hidden under all that mud” Bruno chuckled to himself. “And I bet you’re hungry too?”
Noelle nodded and let out a little squeak in response to Bruno. The other rats began to help themselves to a pile of food that was placed on a table situated next to his chair. Bruno grinned lovingly at his rats as they all began to feast on their dinner. He glanced down at the plate to see there was one piece left and passed it over to Noelle.
“I’m afraid sometimes food can be a little eh…scarce here. But we try and make do” He said, trying to sound a little upbeat. “Here, you can have mine…”
She smiled at his kind gesture and took the baked good from his fingers. She couldn’t help but wonder why he appeared to be living in the walls. As she nibbled on the piece of arepa her eyes began to analysis the room around her. It was full of random odds and ends, make shift lanterns, plants pots and piles of plates. Why did he have so many plates? There were pieces of paper pinned to the wall which appeared to contain painted art pieces of rats in different costumes alongside random doodles. A hammock was seen hooked up behind his chair which Noelle assumed he slept in, due to the lack of a bed. She turned her head as she spotted a little theatre which was placed on top of an old beer barrel behind her. Bruno smiled and pointed towards it, a proud expression forming across his face.
“Heh, that’s our stage for my world famous telenovelas!” he chuckled once again before shrugging his shoulders “well, I guess it’s only really me that actually gets to see them. And these guys too!”
