Bite and Prejudice: A Sirius Intervention
Tumblr media
Chapter 24 of my Pride and Prejudice and wolfstar fic now posted:
In recent years, as his wards grew older and headed towards the independence their own adult life must bring, Dumbledore had often begun to wish that he had not been so hasty in quitting his important and influential roles at the Ministry and Internationally; that he had not been quite so quick to cast off his high earning employments and instead seek seclusion in quiet retirement in the countryside.
Not that he regretted the seclusion or the quiet or even the countryside (the bluebells in the meadows and the first snow lying clean on the branches of his own apple trees was almost enough to make up for the constant smell of manure) but - now his children were grown, and their future uncertain - he did regret the money he had not made, which he could now not give them.
When he had first alighted upon his scheme to take in and care for magical children who were - one way or another - outcast from wizarding society, he had perhaps been rather naive in his understanding of just how much it cost to clothe and feed a growing child, or just how many children there were who needed him, and it was only his own care and careful calculations - now the truth of his financial state was revealed to him - which had prevented the family from exceeding their income.
Madam Pomfrey had a little fortune of her own, as well, which had been inherited from her father and invested in the four percents. It was now agreed between the pair of them that  hers would be the money that they settled on the children, while Dumbledore’s would be the money they used to live. Madam Pomfrey, as it happened, had a sum of five thousand galleons to split between her five wards - and now it seemed that Mary was to take her share of it at once.
Cloistered within his reading room, Dumbledore composed his acquiescence to the scheme for his patronus to convey to Urquart. He had never before supposed that, could Lockhart be prevailed upon to marry his ward, that it could be done with so little expense to himself and so little exertion on his side. However, he knew there was more than his good friend was telling him, that he must be far more indebted to Urquart than the old man was letting on, and pride would not allow Dumbledore to hide in his ignorance. He tagged on to the end of his message a request to know the further particulars of what was now owed, but - unable to think of anything kind, and unwilling to say anything that should make her miserable - he did not send a message to Mary.

WIP Wednesday
(from ch 24 of Bite and Prejudice - which is just Pride and Prejudice and Wolfstar)
He thought too how their dispositions and tempers - though markedly different from the other - would suit each other perfectly and bring out only  the best. How Remus’s tendency to self deprecation, his dry wit and steady temper would deflate the worst of Black’s pride, stick a pin in his self importance and keep his readily admitted propensity to take offence and never give up a grudge in check. Likewise, Black’s ardent nature, his loyalty and tenderness, his capacity for love and his great passion for life would pull Remus out of his own melancholy, make a mockery of his self pity, and make him laugh when he was inclined to be maudlin. Together, Remus thought, they made one very good sort of man. Apart they must always be prey to their own weakness and follies.
But no such union - no matter how secret - could take place now and the very best of themselves was lost with the other, while the very worst of themselves was all they would have for company. And instead, a very different union was to take place in Remus’s family.

All true - though Sirius is described as canonically tall twice (and once as taller than Snape - though with no reference to how tall Snape is) and Remus's height is never mentioned, the way they stand shoulder to shoulder in the shrieking shack always makes me think they're very similar in height.
I hc Sirius as being narrower, more stream lined and elegant, he stands up very straight and looks haughty and imperious so he gives more of an impression of being tall, whereas Remus tries to shrink into the background and go unnoticed. Sirius uses his height to intimidate whereas Remus wants to avoid alarming people at all costs. But really, Sirius is about 6 ft and Remus is 5'11" and a bit.
EXTREMELY unpopular opinion, but I don't think wolfstar has a huge height difference

Are you on a break with posting new chapters of the wolf's tail? No pressure at all if you are! I only ask because I always look forward to the updates!
Yes, I've run out of chapters to post! The schedule will probably be a bit more erratic going forward, with larger gaps between updates - so perhaps subscribe, if you haven't already, so you don't miss the new chapters getting published.

Thanks to @myheadsgonenumb for the tag. I've really only worked on a request for a Dr Zachary Smith oneshot for the NSFW prompts I posted a few weeks ago and it's turning into a whole-ass episode of The Orville I feel 🤧. Here's a bit of what I have so far:
“Doctor, I’m not sure if you heard the announcement, but we need all hands prepping stations for first contact. You’ll be a member of the landing par —”
“Yes, yes, I heard you,” he replied, waving a dismissive hand without once looking up at you.
“And yet, your team hasn’t begun to prep the med bay.”
“You’re blaming me for their incompetence?” he asked, finally looking at you.
“As their commanding officer, it’s your job to —”
“I know what my job is, Captain.”
You arched a brow at him. “Do you? Because it seems for the last year that you’ve been on this crew your time has been consumed with sulking like a spoiled child who had his candy taken from him.” You took a step closer to his desk until the edge was barely pressed into the legs of your trousers. “May I remind you, Doctor, that the United World Governments would’ve been in their right to send you to Lastrites for what you did on Jupiter II. As far as I’m concerned, you’re only here due to their willingness to have mercy.” You put a little more bass in your voice. “Now get up and instruct your team to prepare for first contact. I expect you to be in the shuttle hangar in five minutes.”
The corner of his lips curled into an amused smirk as he looked you over. “Very well, Captain.”

WIP Game
Thanks to @sliebman10 for the tag
RULES: make a new post with the names of all the files in your WIP folder, regardless of how non-descriptive or ridiculous. Let people send you an ask with the title that most intrigues them, and then post a little snippet or tell them something about it! and then tag as many people as you have WIPs.
Because I only write long fics this hasn't changed much since the last time I did it but here goes:
The Wolf's Tail - fifth year
Bite and Prejudice
The Black Lupin (renamed from "The War and the Roses")
I Know What You Did Last Autumn
I always feel guilty tagging people so I'm going to break the rules and leave this as an open tag for anyone who sees this and wants to join in

Friday WIP Fun
Thanks to @sliebman10 for the tag. I'm afraid I haven't been writing anywhere near as much as I should have done over the past couple of weeks, but here is a snippet from both of my WIPs:
From Bite and Prejudice (Pride and Prejudice and wolfstar)
In recent years, as his wards grew older and headed towards the independence their own adult life must bring, Dumbledore had often begun to wish that he had not been so hasty in quitting his important and influential roles at the Ministry and Internationally; that he had not been quite so quick to cast off his high earning employments and instead seek seclusion in quiet retirement in the countryside.
Not that he regretted the seclusion or the quiet or even the countryside (the bluebells in the meadows and the first snow lying clean on the branches of his own apple trees was almost enough to make up for the constant smell of manure) but - now his children were grown, and their futures uncertain - he did regret the money he had not made, which he could now not give them.
And from The Wolf's Tail  (marauder's era canon compliant long fic)
 But this made James snort.
‘Come off it, Pete. We know who did it! Oh - come on,’ he said when he saw Remus’s disbelieving look. ‘It’s all just a bit of a coincidence, isn’t it? A bit too neat? Carnarvon is supposed to be there, the crab puffs are supposed to be her favourite…’
‘Sounds like someone trying to poison Carnarvon to me,’ Remus muttered.
But James ignored him as if he had not spoken. ‘But then she “happens” to get held up, so everyone else just “happens” to eat the crab puffs and then - and then! - she just happens to turn up right in time to play hero. That stinks. It’s as fishy as the so-called crab puffs.’
‘I think they were real crab puffs,’ Sirius murmured.
‘But Carnarvon saved everyone!’ Remus said in exasperation. ‘Like she helped break the curse on Mary. Why would she keep saving people if she’s evil?’
‘Death Eaters work in mysterious ways,’ James replied piously.
‘No they don’t! They point their wand at you and yell the killing curse. They’ve got the subtlety of an engorged erumpment in mating season. If you can just explain to me why Carnarvon would poison Slughorn and Evans and Rosier - Rosier! He’s practically a Death Eater himself - and then, just as they’re lying on the floor, choking on their own vomit and moments from death - she rushes in with a box of bezoars and shoves a stone down everyone’s throat. For what reason?’
‘Well, it was either her or Snivellus,’ James said, refusing to budge. ‘I’m open to either interpretation but don’t tell me it wasn’t one of them.’

Sirius woke up to the sound of heavy footsteps running up the stairs. He smiled, realizing it meant Harry was home, but it took Remus shifting in his arms to remember exactly what position they were about to be found in.
Remus lifted his head and seemed to realize what they were hearing a moment after Sirius, but Harry's footsteps were on the landing. They hadn't talked about what they were, much less what they were going to tell Harry, and he was about to find them naked in bed together. Sirius panicked and pushed Remus onto the floor on the far side of the bed just before Harry opened the door.
“Sirius!” Sirius turned around and pat the bed next to him. Harry hopped up and leaned into Sirius’s hug. “Sleeping in?”
“Um, yeah.” Sirius pulled the blanket tighter around his hips. “Remus and I were up late last night.” He hoped Harry didn’t ask questions about it.
Instead, Harry blushed. “Yeah, uh. I was too.”
Sirius laughed. “Oh, were you? Want to tell me about it?”
Harry smiled. “Sure, but can we wait for Remus too? Where is he? He wasn’t in his room.”
Sirius was sure that Harry would be able to tell that Remus was in the room by the way his heart rate changed. “Uh, maybe he is in the bathroom?”
"No, it was open."
"The kitchen?"
Harry shook his head. "I flooed into the kitchen."
Sirius pressed his lips together, thinking fast. "Maybe he went to pick up breakfast?"
Harry pulled back from the hug to look up at Sirius in confusion. "You think Remus woke up early to go get breakfast after you both were up late? Remus?"
"He knew you were coming!" Sirius covered quickly. "He might have set an alarm."
Harry stopped to consider that for a moment, then looked excited. "Do you think he's getting donuts? Cause I could really go for one now."
Sirius laughed. "You know, he might be!"
Harry scooted to the edge of the bed. "I'm going to go put my bag away and then make tea. I bet he'll want a cuppa by the time he gets here."
"You're probably right. Make me one too, Haz? I'm probably going to shower real quick."
Harry looked back with a smile. "Of course. I wouldn't forget you." Harry turned and walked out of the room.
Sirius scrambled to the far edge of the bed. “Remus? Oh Merlin, I’m so sorry.”
Remus peaked out from under the bed. “You know, I’ve had some pretty bad experiences the morning after hooking up with a guy, but I think shoved out of bed and forced into buying breakfast just might top all the rest.”
Sirius swallowed hard. “Sorry, it was just he was coming in, and I panicked. We hadn’t talked about us or what to tell Harry and–”
“And now I’m going out to get breakfast.” Remus slid out from under the bed fully now, and moved to start putting on clothes.
“I’m so sorry about that.” Sirius sat on the edge of the bed. “I’ll go if you want me to instead. You don’t have to.”
“And what, do you have some polyjuice sitting around so I can be you for the next hour?” Remus shook his head and pulled his trousers up. “It’s fine.”
Sirius bit his lip as he watched Remus dress. “I know we just talked last night about me fighting for you, but this is not me not fighting for you. It’s just–it’s Harry, and I’m–”
“Harry is your priority.” Remus looked at him with a smile, and Sirius felt his pulse settle a bit. “I’m not mad. He should be your priority. It was also kind of funny listening to you scramble for an explanation. I’ll go out and get breakfast now. Donuts, apparently.”
“I’ll pay for them. You can get some money out of my wallet.”
Remus snorted. “You’re damn right, you’re paying. I’m getting myself a coffee too.”
“Whatever you want. A breakfast roll, too. Or an extra donut.” Sirius grabbed his hand. “Are we alright?”
Remus stepped closer, legs pressed against Sirius’s knees over the edge of the bed. He cupped Sirius’s face, stroking his thumb over his cheekbone. “You still like me?”
Sirius bit back the retort that Remus used the wrong L word, and merely answered, “Yes.”
Remus leaned forward and brushed his lips against Sirius’s. “Then yes, we’re alright. We’ll talk about it later, when Harry is busy or whatever.”
“I’d really like that.”

Bite and Prejudice: Salvation!
Tumblr media
The whole party were in hopes that a letter from Dumbledore would arrive the next morning; but breakfast passed and no owls arrived, though Lily flung open all the windows, as if hoping to encourage any and all post birds inside. They struggled to hide their disappointment from each other, for Dumbledore - while locked away in his reading room - was always such a diligent letter writer; exchanging correspondence with the greatest wizards of the age, giving advice to the Minister for Magic herself  and sending articles into Transfiguration Today. But for his family, he sent nothing - though they had hoped that, even if he had nothing of great importance to tell - he would have at least shared that with them and not left them wondering.
Mr. Elphinstone had waited only to see if there were any letters before he set off. (‘Merlin damn the French,’ Madam Pomfrey cried, as he clattered away in his carriage, ‘oh when will they fix the Floo Network?’). Remus had been torn as to whether he should accompany his uncle and help restore his family honour or not, but the encroaching full moon and his wish to not abandon Lily to bear this burden alone once more decided it, and he stayed at Longbourn with the women.
Aunt McGonagall stayed as well, to help out, and Mrs. Weasley visited often from Meryton - always with the design of cheering and heartening them up; though as she never came without bearing news of some fresh instance of Lockhart’s schemes, dishonesty and extravagance, she usually left the wards of Longbourn feeling more dispirited than ever.

Someone you want to know better...
Thanks to @sliebman10 for the tag
Last Song: I don't generally have music playing as I just zone it out, so when I listen to a song its because I've suddenly decided i specifically want to hear that song and then I watch the music video on Youtube (if I don't watch the video, I'll zone it out). Scrolling back through my youtube history the last song I listened to was apparently Kate Bush - Running up That Hill, 10 days ago (I had recently finished watching Stranger Things season 4)
Favourite Colour: Hmm... I think maybe a deep, jewel green or a dusky pink.
Currently Watching: restarted Stranger Things (my Steve Harrington crush is becoming a problem), I'm really stalling on my X Files rewatch and need to get moving with it.
Sweet/ Savoury/ Spicy: It depends on the food! But I think sweet is the safest option because I'm quite a fussy eater and it's hard to go wrong with a dessert.
Relationship Status: Single (and not looking!)
Current Obsession: Steve Harrington
Last Thing You Googled: whether or not the local elections on the 2nd May are taking place in my area (they are)
Tagging: @ivedonemywaiting @kat-xox and @burningaurora

Kreacher breaks my heart in this drawing - the pre-grief on his face, where he is waiting for what he knows is coming but it hasn't happened yet; the way he is holding onto Regulus while he is still there to be held onto. It's absolutely masterful.

When Percy sends his Christmas presents back unopened in ootp, Fred and George leave their sobbing mother to Remus to look after and run off to Ron and Harry to wait until he's managed to cheer her up.
Just living with Sirius in Grimmauld Place is a massive act of kindness. He has his own home (we know - because Sirius lay low there), he has access to instant travel - there is no need for him to live at headquarters, but he chooses to move into a gloomy, cobwebby, dark magic filled mausoleum of a house with a house elf and a portrait that calls him a "filthy halfbreed", just to keep Sirius company.
Not only does he not show any resentment towards Fenrir Greyback, he also apparently bears no ill will to his father for the role he played in Remus's getting bit.
And he doesn't resent Snape for outing him as a werewolf to the entire school - saying Snape could have done a lot more damage by tampering with the potion. Remus is thankful for what Snape did right and doesn't dwell on how Snape harmed him.
in POA he comes across Harry all alone during the Hogsmeade weekend and invites him in for a cup of tea because he can tell he is lonely and frustrated. And he defies Harry's expectation of him (and all adults) by telling Harry the truth about why he didn't let him fight the boggart.
He gives up his evenings and weekends to teach Harry advanced magic, not because he knows Harry will have to fight off a swarm of dementors later in the book, not because he thinks it will save Harry's life - but so that Harry can feel more confident going into his next Quidditch game without worrying about falling off his broom.
While providing this extra curricular activity for free, in his own spare time, he also gives Harry chocolate and even a butter beer - Remus is poor; his clothes are shabby, his possessions old and battered; his teacher's salary might be good, but he knows the job isn't forever - he has one year, 12 pay packets, and then he doesn't know how long he will have to go before he finds another job. He may have to make the money he earns here last him a long time (and his even more shabby appearance in ootp, in conjunction with Umbridge's antiwerewolf laws, suggest he did) and yet he is still spending his money on things to help Harry with the side effects of dementor fighting and rewards for him.
Canon Remus is a genuinely lovely guy who looks out for others and tries to be fair and, if asked, will be generous with his time and even his money (what little he has). He doesn't put himself forward or make the first move (he would see that as him "imposing" himself on people) but when he is around, he is good to everyone and people know they can rely on him.
When Harry hears that (fake) Moody took Neville for a cup of tea, praised him over his Herbology talent and gave him a book he thought would interest him, Harry thinks "it was the sort of thing Professor Lupin would have done". Harry's response to hearing about someone doing something tactful and kind is "yeah, Lupin would have done that" - and coming from the hero of the series, who is himself kind and compassionate and thoughtful - that's pretty high praise indeed.
Canon Remus is kind (or at least tries to be)
- He was visibly conflicted and uncomfortable when Sirius and James went after Snape in Snape's Worst Memory.
- Sirius even acknowledges that Remus is kind when he says that they [the marauders] were all idiots in school and then adds, "Well, not Moony so much." He says that Remus was "the good boy" and that he made them feel ashamed of their crueler antics sometimes, and Sirius seemed to appreciate this at least in retrospect. (I feel the need to note that when Sirius said that they were "idiots" he did NOT mean stupid. He was agreeing with Harry that their actions were not always harmless fun and that he is not proud of being a bully in his youth, so don't use this as "canon proof" that Sirius and James were brainless dumbasses)
- He went out of his way to encourage Neville and was everyone's favorite DADA professor
- His smile/expression is described as "understanding" at least a few times throughout the series.
- Molly sobbed in his arms after she had the encounter with the Boggart. He comforted her (somewhat awkwardly) and gave her a handkerchief: “Molly, it was just a boggart,” he said soothingly, patting her on the head. “Just a stupid boggart . . .”
- In OoTP, Remus speaks with a lonely werewolf at St. Mungo's while visiting Arthur: "Lupin strolled away from the bed and over to the werewolf, who had no visitors and was looking rather wistfully at the crowd around Mr. Weasley... (it was to escape an uncomfortable family situation, but still, it was kind of him to recognize that the man was feeling lonely on Christmas and might like some company)
- He reassured both McGonagall and Hermione when they tried to blame themselves for Dumbledore's death.
- Before he learned the identity of the werewolf who infected him, he felt pity for them because he understood how terrible it felt to lose himself to the transformation, and he believed for a long while that this was the case for the werewolf that bit him. He held no resentment towards them until he discovered that he had been purposely infected by Fenrir Greyback. (And even after learning the truth, he never expresses outward resentment or a desire for vengeance)
