Chapter Twelve - Liaison
Tumblr media
You were dreading the conversation with Sisni. How were you going to tell her? There was no good moment. No perfect opportunity. Every time you thought was the right time to tell her, it passed as soon as it came. Tavros noticed your stress, and offered to take her to the market for a few hours, give you time to think. Caspian was occupied with readying the ship with Drinian's help, so you didn't see much of him that day. Honestly it was probably for the best, since every time you saw him that morning the image of him on his knees, his black eyes paralyzing you flashed across your mind, flustering you and making you clumsy. You decided to take a walk up to the forest.
It had been a while since you went up this way. You used to picnic in these woods with your parents. The river that ran down towards the village, the boulders that acted as a bridge across it, the clearing where you used to play, each had their own fond memories attached to them. You found a quiet spot among the trees, next to a small pond, and sat, enjoying the peace. When is the next time you will be able to hear this? The loudest silence. You took a deep breath in, smelling the fresh eucalyptus, the moss, the bark... "you'll be back" you told yourself. In no time.
You stood up and thought hard. "Ok." you said aloud to yourself. "How to begin?" You began to pace, and spoke out loud.
"Sis.. I'm going away..." No... too blunt.
"Sis. You like Tavros right? Well now you get to live with him! Bye!" Definitely not.
"Guess who's got two thumbs and is going to Calormen? This girl!" Yea right...
"Sis... I'm about to break your heart and make you feel abandoned." Well at least that one was honest...
"I thought the point was to not upset her?" A voice laughed from behind you. You jumped.
"FUCK. CASPIAN! Don't DO that!"
He laughed.
"How did you even know where I was?"
"The men told me you took a walk, someone saw you come up here."
"Yea but... how did you find me in here?"
"I tracked you? It wasn't difficult. Plus you're pretty much yelling to the wind."
"Great, now he tracks me... like an animal."
"Would you prefer I hunted you?" He teased.
"Today, yes, actually."
"Well...your head would make a pretty trophy on my wall..."
"Ha. Ha. "
"In all seriousness, what are you doing out here alone?"
"I can't figure out what to say to Sis. Nothing sounds right, and shes going to think I'm abandoning her."
He placed his hand on your shoulder, and looked down into your eyes. "She will understand. Speak from your heart. Speak the truth. I'm sure she will even be excited for you."
You looked up at him and immediately felt a sense of calm. He has a way about him that diffuses you. Whatever was just causing the end of the world suddenly seems like no big deal.
"How is the ship looking?" You changed the subject.
"Almost there." He picked up a few small stones, and skipped one across the pond. Two skips.
"What else do you need to do?"
"Well. The deck needs a new coat of lacquer, and we have to convert the storage room into living quarters." Three skips this time.
"Oh right. You need a place to sleep."
Four skips. He paused and looked confused at you. "I'll sleep below deck with the crew, the quarters are for you."
"Oh." You blushed. "Don't you need them? For...King things?"
He laughed. "King things? Like what?" Three skips.
"I dunno... writing laws, signing papers..?"
"Is that what you think I do all day?" he laughed again.
"Do I look like I know what a king does?" You laughed with him.
"You will be much more comfortable having a room of your own. And I will feel better knowing you are safely tucked away."
"Like a hunting trophy?" You teased.
He chuckled. "Yes. My little trophy."
You walked back into town together, once again, being stopped every few steps by someone wanting a word with the King.
"You know, we will have to start introducing you as my liaison with Calormen sooner or later."
"It still feels unreal." You shook your head.
He stopped and looked up at the sky. "Can I show you something?" He asked.
You nodded and he led you towards the docks.
The smell of the sea air was comforting to you. The sound of screeching seagulls and the crest of the waves crashing on the pillars of the dock were what lulled you to sleep every night. You and your father used to come and sit at the edge of the pier and fish, just for fun. You rarely caught anything but that wasn't the point. That is, before it was dangerous to go near the water. Before the Darkness.
You followed him toward where the Dawn Treader was docked. The setting sun reflecting off the golden ship. You hadn't been this close to it before. It was MASSIVE. It stood taller than any tree on the island. The waves lapped up against the hull and you could hear it creaking as the waves rocked it back and forth. As it bobbed the serpent's head moved up and down, as if it was alive.
Caspian motioned towards the Dawn Treader "Do you want to go aboard?"
"Can I ?"
"Of course."
You walked up the gangplank and stood on the deck of the ship. The fishing boats you had been on might as well have been children's toys compared to this. You looked across the deck, trying to take note of every detail.
To your left was the back of the ship. The base of a pair of curving staircases framed an ornate doorway, with two stained glass doors. Your eyes followed the stairs upwards to the second deck balcony, where another set of wooden doors with glass windows were closed. At the top of the stairs was the third deck, where the helm stood watch over the rest of the ship.
To your right, the front of the ship, another narrow stairway climbed up to a second platform, then continued up the serpents neck, exiting right before the top of the head. At the base of the stairs was a doorway, with stairs going downward.
Directly in front of you was the mast, with the gorgeous purple sail tied up. At the top sat the crows nest.
Caspian stood with his arms folded across his chest. The wind blew through his hair. This ship suited him.
"This is the Dawn Treader." he said proudly, spreading his arm out in front of him. "What do you think?"
"She's beautiful.' you gushed.
"Isn't she though?" He smiled. "Would you like a tour ?"
"YES"
He laughed and motioned to his right and you both walked towards the front of the ship. You ran your hand along the smooth railing on the bow. He stopped next to the bottom of the stairs, and pointed downward.
"Down there is the crews quarters, and the cargo hold." He motioned upward.
"Up the stairs is the upper deck. Up or down?" He asked.
"Hmm...Up." You decided.
"Alright then, watch your step, after you," He gave a little bow.
You climbed up the stairs, which were rather steep, and emerged on the second deck. Caspian came up behind you.
"This view was incredible." You said out loud to yourself.
"This is nothing." He smiled, and pointed upward to the crows nest. "Just wait until you get up there."
"Noooo thank you." You shook your head.
He laughed. "What, are you afraid of heights?"
"It's not the height so much as the fall..." your eyes traveled from the crows nest to the water below.
"I would never let you fall. I already saved you once, did I not?"
You blushed and smiled. "I suppose you did."
"Come," he held his hand out to you. "Up here."
He stood by the next set of stairs leading up the serpents neck. They were more steep and narrow than the ones leading up to the deck.
"I don't know if I can fit up there..." you said hesitantly.
"Sure you can. I'll be right behind you."
You took his hand, and allowed him to help you up the first few steps.
"Go on." He urged.
You climbed, and it was nerve wrecking. But every time you stopped and hesitated, he would put his hands on your waist to assure you he was there.
At the top of the stairs there was a small opening at the base of the serpents head, and exited out it's mouth.
"There is NO way I'm going to get in there" You turned your head back down to him.
He laughed. "It's alright, look up."
You did, and your breath caught in your chest.
The sun was setting on the horizon, casting long rays of orange, red, and purple all across the sky. Above the colors the stars were beginning to appear. The water was calm, and reflecting the sky perfectly. Forming an endless spectrum of light.
"Wow..." you gasped.
"Here," he said, and turned his back to you, "place your hands on my shoulders so you can turn and watch."
You did as he suggested, turning around on the stairs, so your back was to the opening in the serpents head. He leaned his back up against your stomach, so you wouldn't lose your balance. You placed your hands on his shoulders for extra security. And like that, you both watched the sun until it completely disappeared off the edge of the world.

Chapter Eleven - Decisions
You blinked at him, almost absentmindedly. As if you didn't understand the common tongue suddenly. Those words, that thought, were abstract to you. It has always been just you and Sisni. Always. And you were prepared, and expectant, for that to be forever.
He waited to see if you would respond, and when you didn't, he continued.
"We... I... would never let anything happen to you, or Sisni. Tavros has become very fond of her, and the crew already thinks of you two as family. They would care for her as if she was their own. I didn't bring this up before because I didn't want to overwhelm you, but, Tavros and I already spoke about this at length. We decided that if you were to join me, Tavros would say here, as Sisni's caretaker and new Lord of the Lone Islands. We also had the thought of asking Trugdig to stay and watch over the inn, but per your request, I have not brought any of this up to him."
Once again, you were stunned. The idea of anyone else caring for her would never have crossed your mind. You would have sooner asked if she could have come with you than entrust her to someone else. But, truthfully, if you thought about it, if you were to trust anyone else with her well being, you suppose it would be Tavros. He has really taken to caring for her as an uncle would in the past several months...
"Say something?" Caspian urged gently.
"I... I don't know what to say."
"Just say what you're thinking. Please." He added.
You huffed, "I'm thinking too much. You couldn't keep up."
He chuckled. "Let me try?"
"I suppose...it's not a horrible proposition."
"Alright... That's a better response than last time." He laughed.
"I just...I'm not sure I'm the right person for this. Even if Sisni wasn't in the picture, which is hard enough to imagine, I'm not a politician. I'm not a leader. Hell, I don't even like interacting with others."
"But you still do it, very well. Like it or not, you're good at it. You aren't a trained politician, but that's not who we need. You are genuine, and kind. Ask any of my men, people immediately feel comfortable around you. I can personally vouch for that...to a fault..." he looked down and chuckled.
"But why me? Why not Mr.Osen? He already knows how to sail, and he knows the villagers..."
"He was an option. We all spoke about it together. Osen included. But even he thought you would be a better match than he. Plus..." he blushed slightly, "If we are speaking our minds here..." and looked back up at you, "It would taste a lie to say I wouldn't want you to accompany me for selfish reasons."
You met his gaze. "Oh?"
"I... feel a connection with you... and unless I'm mistaken, you feel it too. I don't quite understand it, or know what to do with it... but I know I don't want to part with you. You make me feel in a way I never have before...and it feels...good."
You stayed silent, hoping he would continue.
"Am I making a fool of myself here?" He asked silently.
You decided to spare him. "No. You aren't the only one..."
"No?" He looked back up at you.
You shook your head.
"You're right." You finally said, and averted your eyes.
"About?"
"I am afraid."
"Of...me?"
"Of listening to my deeper desires. Of admitting I have had thoughts of leaving this place. Of the feelings you ignite in me..."
"Should we be afraid of them?" he asked in almost a whisper.
"You shouldn't. You're the King. You can do and say as you please without real consequence. You could command me on this voyage with you and I would have to obey. My desires don't matter... between the two of us I would be the one who comes out a fool if I acted on them..."
He sat back, and you saw a flicker of darkness cross over his eyes. "You think my actions don't have consequences?" He stood up, and began to pace.
"You're right, I am the King, and as such everyone looks to my example. They look to me to always do right by the rules of the state. I do not get to act on my desires or whims. If I do, every decision I make is scrutinized by my court, my subjects...everyone. Do you not think I would love to act on impulse when the urge strikes? Damned be what is 'proper' or 'appropriate?' Why do you think I didn't kiss you yesterday?"
Your skin felt as if it was on fire. "I thought..."
"What?" He demanded.
"That you didn't want to... that I was imagining things...that I was corrupting your honor."
"Pffft" he shook his head and placed his hands on his hips."Are you joking? Look at you."
"I...what...?"
He took two large strides and crossed the room back to you. He moved the chair aggressively, and knelt at your feet.
"You are the most beautiful woman I have ever seen. I noticed you as soon as you emerged from the crowd that day I returned to this island. And if that wasn't enough you are intelligent, compassionate, funny, and so SO strong. If I threw proper expectations to the wind I would have begun courting you the moment we met..."
His eyes were sharp, and penetrating. They had darkened to near black, you couldn't look away if you wanted to. He stared into yours for what seemed like minutes...then he blinked a few times, and the darkness receded, returning them to their usual soft dark brown. You saw him exhale, and his shoulders dropped slightly.
He turned his gaze to the floor and cracked a smile. "There now...between the two of us, I have made myself the fool."
He stood up. "Now you don't have to be afraid."
"I'm not so sure about that."
"What, do I need to make more a fool of myself?"
"It couldn't hurt..." You looked up at him, trying to hide a smile.
He chuckled. "You see? Funny."
He sighed deeply, and sat back on the chair he had so viciously pushed out of the way, and ran his hand through his hair. "So."
"So?" You responded.
"What can I do to ease your mind? How can I make this decision easier for you?"
"You kind of already did."
"Kind of? Tell me what else concerns you. Let me help."
"Ok." You sat up straight and faced him. "IF I were to agree to accompany you, and that's a big 'if", I would need to be guaranteed Sisni's safety and happiness."
"Without compromise." He confirmed.
"And, this inn is to be run the way it always has been. The way my parents intended. No big changes."
"As if they were still making the decisions." He agreed.
"And I don't want to be gone for years. As quick a trip as possible."
"Whatever is within my power."
"I don't know anything about sailing..."
He laughed. "You don't have to."
"I'm not cooking for the whole crew."
"I would never dream of it."
You paused...
"Is that it?" He joked. "Would you like that all in writing with my royal seal?"
"Very funny."
He stood and moved the chair closer to you, then sat back down, and placed his hand on your knee.
"I will be by your side at all times. I would give my life to protect you, sacrifice any comfort to make you feel safe. Anything you need, you will have it. And Sisni as well. The castle is close to finished, and once she and Tavros move in, she will want for nothing. You have my word."
"Ok." You conceded.
"Ok? Meaning?"
"I'll do it. I'll go to Calormen with you."
He lit up, and pulled you into an embrace. One of his hands on your lower back, the other around the back of your head. You felt your body heat up again. You felt his back under your palms. His defined muscles flexed under his shirt as he held you tight. Your hands moved down his back involuntarily, feeling every curve, every dip. You felt him shiver, and slowly pull away.
"Thank you." He whispered in your ear, "brave girl."

Chapter Ten - Wants and Needs
Tumblr media
You lay in bed, exhausted, but wide awake. Thoughts sprinted back and forth through your mind non-stop. Caspian had just asked you to uproot your entire life. Change everything you have known, leave your sister, leave your home, your island, for what? "A chance to help others. To save their and their families lives. And a chance to find your parents." You answered yourself. If one was ever do give up everything they knew and loved you supposed those were fantastic reasons to do so...
Caspian kept his word and didn't bring it up at dinner and neither did Tavros. Sis was none the wiser, and you'd sooner keep it that way than not. She was enjoying her time with the crew way too much for you to ruin it. Let her have her pie and cream. Let her run and play with her friends. Let her be young for as long as she is able. Give her all the years that were stolen from you. That has been your ultimate goal since you became each others' worlds. You rolled over in bed to face her side of the room.
Your eyes traced her silhouette on the bed. "She could barely keep her eyes open at dinner," you smiled to yourself. As a matter of fact everyone was completely drained. An unspoken decision was made after dinner to call it an early night, as the men left the table and retired early, she yawned and you sent her to bed. Leaving clean up for you. Caspian stayed up a bit to help but you could see how tired he was and you gently sent him to bed as well, using the excuse that you needed time to think to yourself.
What would she say? What would she think? Do you make your decision and then tell her, or consult her first? "No." You answered yourself, rolling onto your back, "she doesn't need that burden." This is your decision to make, and yours alone.
This is pointless. You can't sleep, and you are only getting frustrated just laying here. You decide to get up and make yourself some tea.
As quietly as possible, you slipped on your robe, grabbed the candlestick from your bedside table, and snuck out of the room, not daring to light the candle until you were out in the hall.
You noticed a light coming from under your parent's door. "Caspians door." You corrected yourself. You checked the clock in the hall, 2am. What is he still doing up? You lit your candle and made your way to his door, and knocked softly.
"Caspian?" You whispered
You heard shuffling from behind the door, then the latch, and the door opened slowly, to reveal him in a loose white shirt, unlaced at the top, his hair messy, and falling over his face.
"I'm sorry, did I wake you? I saw a light..." You began.
"No, no. You didn't." He whispered back. "I couldn't sleep."
"Me either."
He opened the door wider, "would you like to come in?" he motioned.
"Oh... uhm. I don't want to bother you..."
He smiled, "No, I really could use the company."
You stepped inside.
The vanity in the corner of the room was repurposed as a makeshift desk. His papers lying all about, a bottle of ink and a quill in one corner, a lit oil lamp in the other. The bed was also strewn with maps and books. His clothes were thrown on the arm of chair by the window, and his baldric with his sword sheathed stood on the floor, leaning against said chair. The copper tub in the opposite corner of the room by the fireplace stood empty, but you couldn't help imagining it's most recent use...
"I apologize for the mess" he said quickly as he scampered around the room attempting to pick up papers.
"Don't worry about it," you smiled, "I'm glad to see this room put to good use again."
You motioned to his baldric and sword, "I haven't seen you wear that."
He glanced over to see what you were referencing. "Oh well. There's been no need."
He stood with his weight on his hind leg, one hand on his hip, the other he ran through his thick, loose hair. He scratched the back of his head, tussling it. You realized you were staring.
"Can I see it?" You quickly added.
"Uhm. Yea, alright. But be careful, it's sharp."
You crossed the room and picked up the scabbard, then slowly unsheathed his sword. The hilt was dark brown leather, topped with a golden lion head. The blade seemed to emit it's own light, bright silver steel, with golden words engraved along the length of the blade.
"When Aslan bares his teeth, winter meets its death..." you read aloud.
"Turn it over" he suggested.
"When Aslan shakes his mane, Narnia will know spring again." You smiled at the words, even though you really didn't understand the meaning. "Is it from a poem?" You asked.
"An ancient prophecy." He answered, stepping toward you.
"Centuries ago, Narnia was under the rule of an evil witch. For years Narnia was in an eternal winter. Until the new Kings and Queens arrived, and with Aslan's help, defeated her, and ushered in an unparalleled age of peace and prosperity. This was High King Peter's sword, Rhindon. It was very recently used by, now, High King Edmund to defeat the Darkness, he then left it to me when he returned to his world."
You suddenly felt as if you were not worthy to touch it, and quickly re-sheathed, and set it down.
"That...that is amazing. I still really don't understand how he and Queen Lucy can go from one world to the next."
"Aslan." He chuckled. "I didn't understand at first either, but I have seen it with my own eyes. Twice in fact."
"You mentioned King Peter, King Edmund, and Queen Lucy, but was there not another Queen?"
He looked down, and folded his arms across his chest. "Queen Susan." He spoke softly.
You got the feeling he was uncomfortable talking about her.
"I didn't mean to bring up anything..."
"No it's alright... you might as well know." He unfolded his arms, and sat on the end of the bed. "There was once a time where I thought she was going to be my Queen. But it was not to be."
"Oh." You didn't quite know how to respond, but decided with, "I'm sorry."
He smiled up at you. "It's alright, I was but a boy then, struck by her beauty. There was much I didn't understand about Aslan, but I came to realize his intended path for me was meant to end in a different place than hers. Plus... she was 300 years older than me...."
"300 years? You gawked.
He laughed. "Time works differently in their world. In any case, I learned much from all four of them, and couldn't have defeated the Darkness without Edmund and Lucy so, even now we owe the Kings and Queens of old our undying gratitude."
He has been through so much. Experienced more than any one person would or should in ten lifetimes. No wonder he was wise beyond his years. Are these the kinds of things that would be waiting for you, should you choose to join his crew? For a split second, you felt excited about the possibility. Then it immediately turned to anxiety. You're not sure you're cut out for that kind of thing...
"You've seen so much..." You glance over at Rhindon.
"You know...you could too...if you wanted..." He suggested.
You rubbed your face in frustration. " I don't know what I'm supposed to do here."
You slumped into the armchair.
He stood up, and walked over to you. "Would it help to discuss it?"
"No...maybe... I don't know..." You mumbled into your hands.
He grabbed the chair by he vanity, and slid it over in front of you. Sitting down so his knees were inches from yours.
"Speak your mind." He spoke firmly.
You gave an exasperated sigh. "Fine."
"I can't just abandon everything here and go. I have a responsibility to take care of Sis and this inn, who would run it if I went away? Sis can't come with me so who would care for her? I was her age when I was left to fend for myself, so I know what it feels like, and I will never, NEVER willingly leave her to the same fate. We are finally starting to get comfortable here, happy even. Trugdig even came up with a financial plan for us, did he tell you that? It doesn't matter if I used to fantasize about leaving this island, or that I used to dream about our parents returning home. Those were fantasies, this. Right here," You patted the armchair aggressively, "is REAL. I NEED to raise my sister. I NEED to take care of this inn. I NEED to stay here."
He didn't look away from you once. He stayed silent while you panted softly after ranting all in one breath. Then, he slowly leaned forward, resting his forearms on his knees.
"But what do you want?"
You stared deep into his eyes, furrowed your brow, and repeated. "I need to be here."
His expression remained soft. A small smile formed in the corner of his lips.
"You didn't answer my question."
"I...I don't know..." You looked down.
"I think you do. I think you're afraid to admit you want something other than what your extremely logical mind is telling you. Your wonderful, logical, mind that has kept you and your sister alive all these years. You're afraid to go against it lest something happen to undo all your hard work. But, you are not factoring in one very crucial new thing..."
"And that is...?"
"You're not alone anymore."

Chapter Nine - Hope
Tumblr media
There was a tension you could slice with a knife between the two of you for the rest of the afternoon. You're sure the others could feel it too. Caspian kept busy talking with Drinian, Tavros, and Osen in the common room, while you kept busy in the kitchen preparing dinner until Sis returned with the blueberries.
"Did you have fun?" You greeted her as she entered the kitchen.
"Yep! Reva found a baby kitten in the bushes! She brought it home." She got up on the counter and sat.
"Oh jeez." you laughed. "Her mother is going to appreciate that"
"So what did you do today?" She asked, helping herself to a handful of berries.
"Oh you know. Same ole same ole. Did the laundry finally."
"You finished it already?"
"Yea...I had...help."
"Oh, did Mrs. Genova come by?"
"Not exactly.. uhm... Casp..." you corrected yourself, "King Caspian helped me."
"With the laundry??"
"Yea...He wanted to get out and see the village, meet the people. He was very interested in learning how things work around here and how he can help." You quickly added.
"By...washing clothes?" She asked suspiciously.
"Yes. As a matter of fact. You know how much the women talk when they're washing, that was the best way for him to get to know things around here."
"Oookaaaayyy..." She stared at you for a while.
"What?" You demanded.
"You're being weird."
"No I'm not, I'm just busy. Are you going to help me with this pie or not?"
"Fine fine." She hopped off the counter. "What's first?"
You kept finding excuses to stay in the kitchen. Using Sis to run errands if you needed something elsewhere. You weren't sure how to behave in front of Caspian. For that matter you weren't sure how to even feel. Your mind kept drifting back to earlier, being in his arms...his lips inches from yours.... you knew what you felt then. You knew what you wanted then. But it would have been temporary, fleeting, and would have ended up hurting more than it was worth.
You also knew that if he wanted to, he would have kissed you. He didn't. Therefore he didn't want to. Right? Even if it was a quick, fleeting romantic gesture it would have been of no difference to him, something, someone, to pass the time. So why not take advantage? "Because he didn't want to." You told yourself firmly.
"King Caspian and Tavros are asking for you." Sis came back into the kitchen, snapping you back to the present.
"Me? Why?"
She shrugged. "I didn't ask. They just said 'Would you ask her if she has a moment to come join us.'" She attempted her best Tavros impression.
You immediately felt your stomach drop. Did you say something wrong? You made a fool of yourself today. Obviously you made him uncomfortable. They're probably going to tell you to stay away from the King for the rest of his stay...or worse... that you broke some law regarding respect... or station...
"Hello?" Sis asked cautiously.
"Huh? Oh. yea. I'll just, go out there. Can you watch the pie? Take it out of the oven in about 15 minutes."
"Sure!" She said excitedly.
You took off your apron, took a deep breath, and walked out to the common room.
Caspian and Tavros were alone at the table now, sitting across from each other. They didn't seem upset, in fact the mood felt light. They looked up towards you when you approached and you swear you noted a shade of pink in Caspian's cheeks...
"I hope we didn't take you away from something important." Tavros greeted you. "Please, sit."
You took the seat at the head of the table. Tavros motioned his head towards Caspian, and you forced yourself to look at him. He averted his eyes, though allowed a small smile to escape his lips, and cleared his throat.
"I...that is... we... have a proposition for you. If you'll hear us out."
"Oh?"
"We would be honored, if you would join our crew for the remainder of the voyage."
Your mouth dropped open. You did not just hear what you thought you heard.
"I'm sorry...WHAT?"
Still smiling, he slowly raised his head, and met your gaze. "We would like it, very much, if you would join the crew of the Dawn Treader for the rest of the voyage."
You heard it correctly, but you still didn't believe it.
"Wha...why me?? I have nothing to offer... no skills that are useful on a ship... I..." You shook your head in disbelief. "I run an INN."
"and very well." Tavros added. You turned towards him. "In the past several months I have seen how you interact with your patrons, with the other villagers. How you care for your sister. You understand people, your people. The people of this island."
Caspian then spoke. "In speaking with Mr. Osen, we realized the culture of the Lone Islands is a combination of customs from Narnia and Calormen. Ways of thinking we do not fully understand."
"Drinian and I have been having a difficult time gaining the trust of those we rescued from Calormen." Tavros explained.
"Aslan knows what the Calormen monarchy tells their people about us." Caspian sighed.
Tavros continued, "They do not want to reboard the Dawn Treader. They are insisting on finding their own ways home."
"Which would be all well if this island had enough resources to provide for hundreds of more people for an extended period of time, but... it doesn't. It is still in a state of repair." Caspian stood up, and leaned over on the table towards you. "We need someone who can bridge the trust barrier. Someone who can stand as a liaison between Calormen and Narnia. Someone who is caring, empathetic, and already known in this community. We need you."
You were dumbfounded. This was not the conversation you were expecting AT ALL. How could they even entertain the thought of you being a, what did they call it..? "Liason?" You kept to yourself, minded the inn, never got involved in gossip or politics on the island. Sure everyone knew you , but everyone knew everyone, its an island for Aslan's sake. They could have just as easily picked Mrs. Genova across the street. Everyone knows her too! And to leave the Lone Islands!? To board a giant ship and voyage across the Eastern Ocean...the thought is...is...
"And," Caspian interrupted you manic thoughts, "We can search for your parents."
You felt like someone ripped your soul out of your body. It felt like time itself had stopped. You gave up hoping that your parents were still alive years ago. It hurt more to hope. It was harder to keep hoping you would see them again one day. You lost control, and began to cry.
Tavros looked at you, then up at Caspian, "I will leave you to your thoughts." He patted your back gently, "Sire, I will check on Drinian and Osen."
Caspian nodded, and you felt him come to your side, and sit. He straddled the bench, his arms resting on his lap and he leaned in towards you, speaking softly. "I'm sorry. That was a lot to take in."
You were embarrassed for crying in front of him. But you lost all control. As if someone had punched a hole through your walls that you spent years building up. He handed you a cloth napkin from the table. You took it and dabbed your eyes, trying desperately to rebottle all the emotions that were flooding out of you. It felt like you sat there for hours, though realistically it was probably only a few minutes. He didn't say a word. Didn't move from your side. When you finally caught your breath and slowed the tears he reached out and placed his hand on your lap.
"I'm sorry." You muttered between sobs.
"What for?" He matched your volume, almost whispering.
"Losing my composure."
He chuckled softly. "You have nothing to apologize for."
"You offered me a great honor, and I just froze. and cried. I'm so embarrassed." You hid your face in your hands.
He moved his hand up to your chin, and grabbed it gently between his thumb and index finger, guiding it to face him.
"Listen to me." His eyes searched for yours until he made contact. "You reacted just as one would given your situation. No apologies, embarrassment, or gratitude needed." His hand left your chin, and brushed a tear from your cheek. "Oh my dear girl." His head tilted slightly, and he smiled.
You closed your eyes, and leaned your cheek against the palm of his hand. Then took a deep breath in, and a large exhale.
When you opened them, he moved his hand away slowly.
"Can I think about all this?"
"Of course."
"Please don't bring it up to anyone else?"
"Not without your permission."
"I can't tell if the pie is done!" Sis yelled out from the kitchen.
You both laughed. You wiped your eyes and stood up to walk into the kitchen, but then turned back towards him.
"Do I look ...ok?" You asked him.
"Beautiful." He said softly.

Chapter Eight - Laundry
Tumblr media
Walking to the wash fountain with the King was an experience on it's own. Every few steps someone would stop and bow, or curtsey, ask to shake his hand, and thank him. Everyone wanted to talk to him, and he stopped and gave every single person his undivided attention. You noticed how he would make eye contact with each person, kneel down to the level of the children, and be genuinely interested in what everyone was saying. You thought that even if you were blind you would find him attractive on personality alone. He had such a caring and compassionate nature, and Tavros was right, beloved by all.
When you finally made it to the fountain, it took twice as long to get there as it normally does... and you had about seventeen times the laundry to do with an entire crew of a ship staying at the inn. As you approached, a hush fell across the other women at the fountain, immediately followed by whispering and murmuring. You picked an open spot and sat, Caspian sitting beside you.
"You really don't have to stay," You assured him. "You can go wander around and meet the other villagers."
"I told you I was here to help, so I am." He stated firmly. "Besides, these are all my mens clothes and it feels wrong to have you wash it all alone."
"It's literally my job." You laughed.
"Well, I'm literally giving you a command to let me help." He gave you a playful bump with is shoulder.
You felt butterflies explode in your stomach.
"Alright then, your Highness, get to work." You handed him a bar of soap.
He smiled and looked down.
While you washed, he engaged the other women in conversation. Humoring their gossip, and asking about their lives. As they would come and go, you would introduce the newcomers to him and they each reacted with the same level of surprise at seeing the King, on his hands and knees, doing laundry with the rest of them. You also couldn't help but notice out of the corner of your eye when the other women would silently whisper to each other motioning towards you.
Even though you had more washing to do than usual, you were finished much faster with double the hands to share the workload.
"Alright, that'll do it." You stated as you finished the last shirt.
You stood up, and he followed. Saying your goodbyes to the other villagers, you headed back home with the wet laundry.
"That was...fun." He chuckled softly.
You giggled. "Washing clothes? We should trade jobs then."
"Maybe we should. You'd be a great queen."
You laughed together, and you added,
"I'm not so sure about that. I don't know anything about politics."
"But you know about caring for others. You have a natural protective instinct, and are fair, and patient."
Your cheeks flushed. He continued,
"Politics can be taught. Those are just rules on paper. Instincts cannot. You know I have dealt with many who know the politics but lack the selflessness and heart needed to be a good ruler."
"Did you ever not want to be king?" You asked curiously.
He thought in silence for a few seconds. "Well. Not so much not wanting to be king as much as not feeling like I was ready. It was thrust upon me so suddenly. But...Aslan himself told me I was. And that gave me the confidence I needed. I just try to be the King I know he would want me to be."
"Wow." You tried to absorb everything he said. "You can't really argue with Aslan then, can you?"
He laughed. "No, no you cannot."
"If it means anything, I think you are more than a good ruler. You are a great King and we are lucky to have you. Look at how much you have done for us already." You motioned towards a family walking and laughing together. "That woman, that mother, was a victim of the Darkness. Her husband thought he'd never see her again. Her infant son was to grow up without a mother. That is all reversed now, because of you."
He stopped walking, and was watching them. You noticed his eyes started tearing up. "I need to do more." He stated in barely a whisper.
You moved your basket to one hip, reached your other hand up, and placed it on his chest. His eyes met yours and you gave him a reassuring smile. "You will."
He smiled back, and took a deep breath.
"Let's get these hung up before the men get back, shall we?"
You nodded and you both continued back to the inn.
On approach you heard voices inside, you recognized Tavros' and Drinian's but there was another you didn't. The three were sitting at the table enjoying the lunch spread when you entered.
"There they are!" Tavros exclaimed as he looked up.
"Sire, this is Osen, he 'as a ship he's gonna let us use ta return the people to Calormen."  The Captain introduced.
Osen bowed, "Sire, Miss."
"Nice to see you again Mr. Osen" you greeted. Then turned to Caspian "Osen's family has been ship builders on this island for generations."
"What a pleasure Mr. Osen" Caspian put his basket down to shake his hand. Then addressed them all, "Gentlemen, I will be with you all shortly, if you don't mind. I have to finish a prior commitment." He motioned to the laundry baskets.
Tavros and Drinian didn't seem phased at all but Osen looked confused. "uh... of course... your Majesty."
You couldn't help a soft giggle. "Please, help yourselves to more mead in the kitchen, there is plenty." You offered.
Then you lead the king through the kitchen to the back door, which led to the yard. There was a small, stone paved area to the left where the laundry lines stood. It got direct sunlight all day, all year round. To the right was a small fire pit, with some chairs, and ahead was the garden. Your mother made an immense effort to grow as much of your own produce as she could, and you had made an equal effort to maintain it all these years.
"Why does everyone stare at me like I grew a unicorn horn whenever I suggest I'm helping you with chores?" He shook his head as he pinned a shirt up on the drying line.
"Because a king wanting to help with chores is strange." You laugh.
"You think me strange?" He smiled.
"Oh, very much." You peeked at him from behind a sheet you had pinned up in front of you. He wrinkled his nose and gave you a glare, but couldn't hide his smile.
You both laughed, and you walked around the line to grab another wet item to hang, but you slipped on a puddle by the basket, and fell. He reacted quickly, reaching his arm out and wrapped it around your waist to support your back, while the other grabbed your hand. You both froze, time seemed to stop. Him leaning over you, his face inches from yours. Your heart was pounding in your chest, both from the adrenaline of the fall, and his touch. You could see his chest, breathing heavily under his unlaced shirt. A few strands of hair had escaped his half ponytail, as they fell over his eyes.
"Are you alright?" He asked, still holding you.
"Mm..hmm." You nodded, unable to say a word.
He didn't let you go. And you didn't want him to. His eyes darted down to your lips for a split second, then slowly moved back up to meet yours. Then, very gently, he straightened up, supporting you back into a standing position. Still holding your hand and lower back, still holding your gaze.
"Thank..." you cleared your throat, "thank you," and broke his gaze. He quickly released you and ran his hand through his hair, tucking those wild strands back into place.
He took a step back. "Are you sure you didn't hurt yourself?"
"Yes, I'm fine." You smiled.
You could still feel the spell you were both under drifting further away. You wondered what would have happened if you didn't break it.
"I suppose it was my fault for distracting you." He continued to pin up laundry.
"Maybe," you began. Then smiled... "I can honestly say I have never fallen before I met you."
You couldn't see it, but he blushed from behind the shirt he was hanging.

Chapter Seven - How It's Always Been
Ugh. You need a bath yourself. Once he was in his room with the door closed. You took the opportunity of the empty inn to prepare your own bath.
The warm water felt so amazing. You can't remember the last time you were able to enjoy a bath without having to rush to prepare something for someone. You closed your eyes and let your mind wander. Caspian in the room next door, in the bath... his long wet hair falling over his face... You recalled the image of his lower abdomen peeking under his lifted shirt. Him telling you not to argue... forcing you to obey...
Would he become more forceful if you behaved more stubbornly? "I might test that" you thought to yourself. See how far you can push him. When he slammed his hand on the table...the passion in his voice...wait. Did you want to see him angry? What is wrong with you?
You opened your eyes, and scolded yourself. He doesn't need you to make his life more difficult.
But the way his eyes darkened when he spoke about the Calormene... an involuntary shiver ran down your spine. Your hand began to wander up your thigh...
"No." You said quietly to yourself, and moved your hand away. Anyone could be back any minute.
You finished up, got dressed, and just for good measure sprayed on some of your mother's perfume. Just a note of lilac.
You were dumping out the water when Sis came running up.
"There you are." You greeted her.
"Where have you been?"
"Oh Mrs. Genova took me shopping! Look at what she bought me!"
She pulled a pretty blue dress out of her basket.
"She said it was a 'thank you' gift for helping her run errands."
"Oh wow, she really didn't need to do that..." You felt a bit awkward. It was a very nice gift.
"I know. I told her that. But she said she didn't have grandkids of her own so she wanted to treat me like one. But we also got you something."
"What?! Why?"
"Because I didn't want you to feel left out. Plus the dress shop said they'd price it down if we bought two, so... here! "
She handed you a package wrapped in twine. You opened it to see a stunning green dress with black and silver lace framing the corset style top.
"Sis. I... It's beautiful."
You were at a loss for words.
"This looks way too expensive though... we have to take it back tomorrow."
"Mrs. Genova said I earned them. She also said you deserved something nice. And I agree. "
You gave her a huge hug. Never in your wildest dreams did you ever imagine owning a dress this beautiful. You'll have to thank Mrs. Genova profusely next time you see her.
"Why do you smell so nice?" Sis asked as you guided her back inside.
"As opposed to normally?" You laughed.
"Well yea," she laughed "you normally smell ok, but today you smell REALLY good."
" I used some of mother's perfume after my bath today. "
" Oooohhhh. Whyyyy?" She taunted.
" Because I felt like it. "
" Yea right. You did it for King Caspian. "
You blushed.
" What makes you say that? "
"Oh come on. I saw how you guys were acting last night."
" You're imagining things. "
" Am not. "
" Are too. And since when do you notice things like that anyway? "
" I notice a lot of things. " She responded proudly. " Like Sir Tavros always flicks his ears when he eats something he thinks is really yummy."
You laughed, " really? "
" Mhm. And you put your hands on your hips when you're trying to concentrate. "
" Do I? "
" And Reva from down the street sneezes twice in a row whenever she goes outside for the first time."
"Ok, ok. You proved your point." You laughed. "Wow. Next time I need some spying done I'll ask you. "
" Oh! One more. "
" Ok, one more. "
" King Caspian looks at you, a lot, when he thinks you're not looking. "
* * *
Once inside you sent her to hang up your dresses in the bedroom. You couldn't imagine when you would ever wear it but, it'll be nice to look at at least.
You realized Caspian had still not come out of his room. You battled with your instinct to check on him. "He probably wants privacy after being surrounded by people for over a year" you tell yourself. But you would also be in a lot of trouble if the King fell and hurt himself...or something worse...on your watch.
You decided to knock and just check...
"Uhm. Your Majesty? I was just checking to make sure you were alright..." You called through the door.
The latch moved and the door opened.
He stood there, his wet hair dripping water which ran down his bare chest. He wore his pants, loosely laced, but nothing else.
His arm reached up to lean against the top of the doorframe.
"Oh." You gasped and felt your face turn red. You averted your eyes. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to disturb you."
He smiled down at you. "Not at all."
"You were just... in there quite a while... and I just wanted to see if you needed anything... make sure you didn't drown or...something..." you stammered.
"I'd be a poor sailor if I drowned in a copper tub after being at sea for a year." He chuckled. "I actually dozed off in the bath. There is a scent in this room that is just...very relaxing." He looked back into the room, as if trying to find he smell. "I couldn't help myself."
"Oh, yes," you still couldn't look directly at him, "that's the eucalyptus. It grows everywhere on this part of the island."
"Mmm." He thought aloud, "We must be sure to take some back with us."
"I'll... let you finish getting dressed then?" You're not sure why you asked...as if he would invite you in to watch.
"You're very sweet to check on me, thank you. I will be out shortly." He smiled. You nodded while looking down, and hurriedly walked back down the hall. You heard the door latch closed behind you.
You barely reached the end of the hall before Sis popped out of your bedroom.
"TOLD YOU." She mocked and folded her arms across her chest.
"Shut up." You murmured, and went into the kitchen.
She followed.
"You never check on ME when I take too long in the bath."
"That's because I enjoy my alone time and want you to take forever." You teased while preparing some lunch.
"Orrrrr it's because you liiiike him."
"OR it's because I don't want anything to happen to the KING while he's in our inn."
"When you get married, that'll make me a princess."
"IF I get married, it will be to a man on OUR island who is unassuming and ordinary. Just like everyone else around here."
You sighed. "Here, go set this on the table." You handed her a platter of meats, cheeses, and bread.
"Why can't you admit he's handsome, and you like him?" She half whined as she took the tray.
"Because, nothing can come of it." You prepared another tray with a pitcher of mead and mugs.
"Soooo there is something to admit then?" She smiled up at you.
"No." You grabbed her shoulders and turned her around. "Go." You gave her a gentle push towards the table.
You followed with the tray of drinks.
"Ok. ok. So if there WAS something to admit, why could nothing come of it? I thought if two adults liked each other, they could get married."
You sighed again. "I wish is was that simple." You placed the tray on the table. "You have to understand, there are different stations in life, for adults."
She placed hers down as well, and sat on the long bench opposite of you. Then waited silently for you to continue.
"You know there are royals, and nobles, like the King and his Knights, yes?"
She nodded.
"Then there are...lower classes...commoners. That's us. The adults from the upper classes, have to marry other adults from the upper classes. And adults from the lower classes, marry others from their same class. Understand?"
"Kind of...." she scrunched up her face, thinking very hard. "but... why?"
"It's just the rules." You shrugged. "How it's always been."
"That's kind of dumb..."
You laughed. "Maybe. But it's not really our place to question it. Plus we have waaay more important things to worry about."
"Like what?"
"Well, like I was thinking of baking a pie to go after dinner tonight. But I have no idea what kind of pie the boys would like..."
Her face lit up.
" Blueberry!"
"And cream?" you smiled.
"Oh YES!" she jumped up.
"Can I go pick them?!?!"
You laughed again. "Sure."
"Can I ask Reva if she wants to come?"
"Sounds great. Just make sure you start heading back before it starts to get dark." You gave her a knowing look.
"oookaaayy." she smiled. She ran into the room to get her cloak, and you went into the kitchen to grab a basket.
You handed it to her, and stood at the doorway to watch her go down the street and ask her friend to come blueberry picking with her.
Seeing her able to enjoy a normal childhood made you happier than you thought it would. Things you were afraid she would never get to experience. You owe it all to King Caspian and his men.
"Did I hear something about blueberry pie?" A voice came from behind you, and made you jump.
"SHIT." You placed you hand over your heart. "You SCARED me."
He laughed out loud. "I'm so sorry."
You gave him a little glare. "I have a feeling you did it on purpose."
Still laughing, he shook his head. "Really, I thought you knew I was standing here."
"Were you there the whole time?"
"Not the whole time, I had just emerged from my quarters about the point where you told Sisni 'you had more important things to worry about'. And of course, when I heard 'pie' I had to come out and investigate."
You giggled softly. "I hoped it would be a surprise."
"It still will be. May I help with anything around here?"
You were surprised by the offer.
"Oh... no. Thank you. I've left some lunch out for you and your men. I assumed you would have plans to make. I just need to step out and do some laundry."
"May I join you?"
"To...do laundry???"
"If you'll allow me." He laughed at your confusion. "I want to go out and experience your island for myself, as it is for you in the day to day. See how I can improve things for you all. Plus, I like to keep my hands busy."
"Uhm. Yea...sure? If you really want to?"
"As long as I am not bothering you."
"No, no. The company would be nice I just...didn't think anyone would ever want to do laundry..." you chuckled.
"Only when it is in your company." He smiled.
You blushed. "Well... in that case..." you motioned towards the back of the hall. "Let's grab the baskets."

Chapter Six - Trouble
Tumblr media
Fucking hell... your head was pounding...
"How much did we drink last night?" You asked yourself as you forced your eyes open and looked around. You were in your room, in your bed, but Sis was not.
"What time is it?' You asked aloud to no one in particular.
The sunlight poured into the room, and for once, it was awful.
You washed your face, and changed your clothes, (it made you feel a little better), and poked your head out the door. Down the hall you could hear hushed voices talking, but otherwise it was quiet.
You took a deep breath and walked through the kitchen, to the common room. As you emerged you saw, Caspian, Tavros, and an older sailor gathered around the dining table, looking over some papers and maps. They looked up when they saw you. Caspian smiled at you.
"Well good morning."
"Where is everyone?" You asked confused.
"The men are out on patrol, and Sisni offered to help the old fisherman's wife run some errands. What was her name Tav? Mrs. Gen...?"
"Mrs. Genova" Tavros finished.
"Yes, that's right. Sweet old woman."
You were still trying to process everything. Trying to remember last night.
Caspian had brought out an entire keg of Ramanduian wine...you remember laughing with him...sharing and comparing your childhood...
You vaguely remember thinking he was flirting with you. Then trying to remind yourself he probably does this with every woman he comes across.
"Are you alright?...."
Tavros' voice floated back into the forefront of your attention.
"We did indulge a bit much last night" Caspian chuckled. "You need coffee my dear, come."
He poured a cup and placed it on the table next to him motioning for you to sit.
"I don't want to intrude..." you began.
"You are impossible," he laughed. "Sit."
You really were in no mindset to argue. You noticed they already had a breakfast spread on the table. So you helped yourself to some toast as well.
You couldn't help but glance over at the map. It seemed to be of the entire Eastern Ocean.
You couldn't even have fathomed how vast it was. Looking at the distance from The Lone Islands to Narnia, you empathized with these men who were so far from home.
"I didn't realize how far you came."
"Yes. It has been over a year since I have seen Narnia, and I miss it dearly, but my responsibility is to the families of those who the Darkness stole from. We need to make sure we return everyone home."
"Aye. And make sure we have the space and rations to do so." The old sailor chimed in.
"This is Captain Drinian." Caspian motioned from you to him, "I don't think you had a chance to meet last night."
"Pleasure Miss." the Captain nodded towards you.
"Likewise," you reciprocated "How many more people do you have to return home?"
" 'Bout hundred or so." Drinian responded.
"Most of them are from Calormen." Caspian sighed leaning over the map. "Who we are now not on good terms with."
"The Slavers came from there," you noted. "I recognized their flags."
"Yes. They know these islands are Narnian territory. They should have never come here. But with my uncle..."
He slammed his hand on the table.
"How in good conscience are we to return these people to a land that treats them in such a way?"
You assumed it was a rhetorical question, but Tavros responded.
"They have families there Sire. Those who miss them."
" 'An we aren't going to force 'em. If they wan'ta come back to Narnia with us..."
"We will welcome them with open arms." Caspian finished Drinian's sentence.
"I'm sure some of them will only want to go back to make sure their families are safe." You added. "After seeing what Narnia can offer, I don't see how they would choose to be under anyone else's rule."
"Regardless of their ultimate wishes, getting them back into Calormen's boarders is the immediate problem." Caspian sighed, and sat down.
"As soon as they see a Narnian ship they will attack."
"Even with the royal crest on the flag?" You asked.
"Afraid so Lass. Those barbarians have no regard for proper political process." Tavros responded.
"What if it was a ship from the Lone Islands?" you thought aloud "they might think it is just another batch of slaves?"
They all stopped and looked at each other.
"Thas' an idea eh?" Drinian commented.
Tavros included, "Not a bad one either... what do you think Sire?"
Caspian looked down and laughed. "The most obvious answer and it didn't cross our minds." Then he looked at you "That's the last time I drink with you, you muddle my mind."
"You're the one who brought out the whole casket." You joked, giving him a soft shove.
The Captain and Tavros shared a look.
"Well. That's settled. I best be out to go find a ship big enough, and a local daft enough to let us use it. Tavros, ya' help me with that?"
"Aye Captain."
They both bowed towards Caspian, and he rose to dismiss them. Once they walked out the door he sat back down.
"Speaking of last night..." he began. "I wanted to apologize to you."
"What for?"
"I behaved very inappropriately towards you. I was forward and assuming. It was not gentlemanly or noble of me. I am sorry."
You were taken aback by the apology. Nothing that you remember about last night was any of those things. But your memory was also fuzzy.
"It's alright, really. I didn't take offense to anything."
"I forgot myself for a night, which truthfully was refreshing. You... you are a welcome change of company, mentally and visually... and as I said last night, this inn is very comforting." He looked around. "It is easy to get too comfortable in here. Forget how one should behave."
You blushed. That was all it was, him having a bit too much to drink and letting a little loose. You knew better than to look into it but you too were getting a little too comfortable around the King.
"Think nothing of it Sire. I am glad I could offer an escape from your burdens, even for a night."
He cracked a smile, and looked down, "though that still stands."
"What?"
"When we're alone, call me Caspian." He looked back at you, sincerity in his eyes. Your stomach flip flopped.
"I meant that."
You blushed again, and looked down. You can't. You can't feel like this about him. He's a king. YOUR King. And you are just a poor girl, who runs an inn on some island VERY far away from his massive kingdom. Plus he just told you what he really felt and...
you noticed he was still looking at you, and you dared to look up.
He chuckled and looked away, sighing. "You are going to be trouble for me."
He shook his head and stood up, and stretched. The tiniest bit of his shirt lifted at the base, enough to see his hip line. You meant to look away but you couldn't. This man was so fucking attractive, smart, empathetic, and loyal. AND CONFUSING.
"I really could use a bath." he interrupted your thoughts. "Would you mind if I borrow your cauldron to heat some water?"
"Oh please, allow me." You hurried to the fireplace, and brought the cauldron over to the water spigot to fill it. He followed behind you, and sat at the bar while you pumped.
"Sorry," you apologized. "I should have had a hot bath ready for you last night, but..."
"We were distracted." He smiled. "It was more than a fair trade, I assure you."
"By the way, I don't really remember getting to my bedroom last night. Did you go to bed before I did?"
He laughed. "No. We both stayed up pretty late. You admitted to me that you didn't drink much so I surmised the wine would affect you more than me. You kept nodding off mid conversation, but were being stubborn about going to bed. So I let you fall asleep on the big chair in front of the fireplace before I carried you to bed. Don't worry, I was careful not to wake Sisni."
You felt your whole body turn red. "I'm... I'm so sorry you had to do that..."
"It was my pleasure. Truthfully it was my own doing by keeping your company so long. We were enjoying each others, or at least...I was enjoying yours?"
"Oh... trust me, if I wasn't enjoying you I wouldn't have stayed..." You replied bluntly, and immediately realized it. "I MEAN. You're great company. You must be or... fuck...." You ended under your breath. How can he fluster you so easily?
He laughed, "and she has a sailors mouth."
You didn't dare to respond as you carried the cauldron back and placed it over the fire.
"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to embarrass you." He turned in his stool to face you.
"I'm just not used to having royalty in my home." You wiped your hands on a washcloth and placed them on your hips, making an intent effort to stare at the water in the cauldron. As if it was going to try to escape.
"Truthfully, I'm not used to being treated like a king." He crossed the room, and leaned an arm up against the mantle. "I was born into royalty, and raised as a prince, yes, but, my tutor made sure to instill in me humility and equality. I remember him knocking me off my high horse whenever I would behave as if I was above others. He insisted I learn how to perform all the jobs of everyone in the castle, from the most elaborate to the most mundane. I spent a week learning how to cook, clean, and take care of the stables...respectively. I did not understand it at the time, but now I realize what an invaluable lesson it was."
"He sounds like a very wise man."
"He is. And funnily enough, only half man. He is half dwarf."
"You're kidding? How was that for him growing up in Talmar?"
"He didn't. My uncle hired him in Narnia after my father died. After he murdered him." He looked down, "Probably the only good thing he ever did for me."
"You must miss him."
"I do, but he will be there in the castle when I return. And for once, I will have stories to tell him." His face lit up again.
You smiled at him, "Well. Looks like the water is hot enough now. Shall I fill your tub for you?"
"Please, allow me to carry that." He reached for the towel to pick up the cauldron. "It must be heavy."
"Nothing I haven't carried before."
"But I was not here before to be a burden. Please, don't argue." He didn't ask again. He reached forward and took the towel from you before you could protest. He picked up the cauldron and took it to your parents...you mean...his...room, then came back out a few minutes later to refill it with cold water.
You took the opportunity to grab some nice towels and soap.
"Here," you handed them to him. "enjoy..." You smiled, more suggestively than you intended to.
"Oh I intend to." He gave you a quick wink.
Fuck.

Chapter Five - Over A Glass of Wine
They were slowly trickling in, a few at a time. Then before you knew it, the common room was FULL and LOUD. Not an empty seat anywhere to be found. You and Sis were keeping busy running plates and pitchers back and forth, but the time passed quickly as the crew was eager to include you both in conversations.
His Majesty and Tavros were sitting at the dining table with a few other crew mates, laughing and reminiscing. You couldn't help but sneak glances at Caspian whenever you got a chance. You even thought you had caught him looking at you once or twice.
"no way." You talked yourself out of it.
"Get your head out of the clouds."
After a while you noticed Sis was no longer helping with dishes and chores, you scanned the room and found her sitting between Tavros and another sailor, her face lit up as they spoke. She'll never get this experience again, might as well let her enjoy it.
You began to wash dishes behind the bar, facing downward, beginning to zone out... But you felt someone approach the counter.
"Have you eaten yet?" You heard a man ask, and look up to see him.
He was leaning on the bar, on both arms, crossed in front of his chest. Very close to you.
Your heart pounded.
"Oh.. I... Uhm. I will. In a bit."
You replied breathlessly.
" Come. " He smiled gently, and held his hand out to you.
"Oh, but I.." you motioned to the dishes.
"Are you disobeying a direct order from your King?" He raised his eyebrow. He spoke firmly, but with a laugh in his eyes.
If you didn't have the counter for support, your knees would have buckled.
"No... of course not... your Majesty."
You emphasized.
He exhaled a laugh, and gestured his hand again. This time you took it, and he led you around the bar, and to the dining table.
He pulled out a seat next to his and motioned for you to sit.
"Oh really, your Highness," you protested, "I will eat later, once you have all had your fill."
"Please." He said softly " I insist. You have not sat down since we arrived this afternoon. Don't think I haven't noticed."
You blushed. "It's.. it's alright. " You barely managed above a whisper.
" It's not. And I won't have it. "
He motioned again to the chair.
You have no idea why it's so difficult to say no to him... Maybe because he's a king... maybe because his smile makes you weak...But you noticed how hungry you actually were when Sis placed a plate of food in front of you.
"Thank you Sisni." He said to her. "If she won't listen to her King maybe she'll listen to her sister." He laughed, and so did the rest of the table.
You gave in, and sat. Only then did he sit down in his chair at the head of the table. He poured some wine, and placed it in front of you.
Sis then sat down across from you, next to Tavros.
"You were right little one." Tavros said to her. "She is rather stubborn."
You made a face at Sis, and she stuck her tongue out at you. The men laughed.
You had to admit you were greatful for the break. Your feet ached, and the warm food was just what you needed.
You tasted the wine. "This is amazing. We don't have this wine on the island... Where did it come from?"
"The island of Ramandu." Caspian answered, taking a sip of his own.
" It is spectacular, is it not? "
" Ramandu? I thought that place was a myth. "
" In the same way Alsan is. " He replied.
"That's where they broke the curse that caused the Darkness! " Sis chimed in.
" Really? " You looked from her to Caspian, " so you actually went onto the island? Are the legends true then? "
" About the Stars? Yes." He answered.
" Ramandu's own daughter was the one who helped us defeat the curse. "
Again, Sis chimed in." King Caspian said she was soooo beautiful! Like an angel!"
Caspian choked on his wine, and you immediately felt a surge of irrational jealousy.
" Oh. " You responded. " Yes... as a star I would assume she would be..."
You swear you noticed Caspians cheeks flush.
Tavros interjected. "I'm sure his Majesty saw many beautiful things on his journey. Alsan's country being one of them. I do envy you that Sire."
Caspian quickly took the bait for the change of subject.
" Well I only saw the entryway, but you will see it too one day my friend. "
The conversation continued long into the night. As the other sailors and soldiers began to retire, you noticed the time.
"Sis, I think it's about time you headed to bed as well." You told her.
"Awwcomeonnnn..." She protested. "Can't I stay up with you?"
Tavros yawned and stretched.
"Come little one, I am tired myself. But if you come with me now I'll tell you one last tale of our adventures." He winked at you.
"Alright!" She quickly agreed. "Goodnight!" She waved to you and Caspian and followed Tavros down the hall towards your room.
Caspian chuckled. "He really has bonded with your sister."
"Yes, he's become like an uncle to us."
You smiled as you watched them walk away.
"Once he retires, I'll make him a nursemaid." Caspian joked.
"Oh yes, I'm sure he'll appreciate that" you laughed along.
You both stared down at your cups for a moment, and in that moment of silence, you noticed you were alone.
"Everyone else must have gone to bed." You stated obviously, and immediately scolded yourself for not saying something more clever.
"Yes. We've had a tiring journey. And your inn is very comfortable. It puts a mind at ease."
"I'm glad to hear it. It has only been occupied since your last visit to our islands. "
" Yes, Tavros told me about your parents. I'm truly sorry I allowed any of this to happen in the first place. " He swirled the wine in his cup. Looking very serious and solem.
"You didn't allow anything, my King. You were just a boy yourself when your uncle started all of it. " You reached out and instinctively placed your hand on his arm to comfort him.
" Please, when we're alone, call me Caspian. " He smiled, looked down at your hand, then up at you.
Realizing what you did you immediately removed your hand and apologized.
"Sorry... "
" Don't be. " He grabbed your hand and placed it back on his forearm. Keeping his hand over yours.
You felt a surge of.. something...at his touch. It jolted up your arm and into your stomach, causing it to jump.
"I think most forget that I am only a man, and I too feel comfort from touch."
" I just didn't mean to cross any boundaries ... "
" You didn't." He assured you. "And thank you for your kind words. I know logically there was nothing I could have done, had I even known of the situation but, it was my family who caused it... therefore I inherited the responsibility."
" I know that feeling. " You sighed and looked down the hall to yours and Sis' room.
" You raised her since she was a baby? " He asked
" Yes. She was barely a year old when our parents were taken. I love her very much, please don't misunderstand, but... I didn't get to choose this path in life... "
" It was thrust upon you. " He finished for you.
You looked into each other's eyes. Those dark, deep eyes that held such emotion. Fuck if he couldn't paralyze you with one look...
You blushed and looked away, moving your hand off him in the process. You cleared your throat.
"We're almost out of wine." You commented.
He stood up, and came around behind your chair. Leaning over into your ear he softly replied, "If it means keeping your company longer, then I'll bring the rest out."
A shiver ran up your spine, and down between your legs.

Chapter Four - A Warm Welcome
Tumblr media
The KING?! You felt a surge of panic, as if you had to get something done.
"Whoa. Slow down." You told yourself.
Why are you getting all worked up? It's not like you're going to even meet him. You laugh at yourself and figure you'd at least go with the crowd and see his ship come in. It must be a magnificent vessel.
As you near the docks you see Sis with the other kids pushing their way through the crowd to get to the front, and call out to her.
She grudgingly walks towards you.
"Can't I go see the Dawn Treader come in?" She pouts.
"Yes, of course." You smile, I just wanted to let you know where I was. Stay out of the way, and mind your manners."
"I will!"
She disappeared into the crowd.
You stood towards the edge of the group, making sure Sis could find you easily if she needed to. Plus being in the middle of a large crowd made you nervous. You heard the crowd get excited and looked up to see the most beautiful ship you had ever seen pulling up to the end of the dock.
It was massive, painted gold, and had huge purple sails with the Narnian crest on them. The head of a sea serpent adorned the bow, and you could swear it was alive with how much detail was in it.
There were so many people on board. More than what you assumed to be a normal ship crew. Then you realized people in the crowd were calling out to those on board, some crying, others laughing. These were the lost villagers!
As the gangplank dropped and people disembarked, you were astounded at the sheer number of them. So many families were being reunited around you. You recognized a few of them, the fisherman and his wife you had just spoken to were hugging their daughter who you clearly remember being sacrificed to the Darkness years ago.
The combined feeling of joy and sadness from everyone was palpable, sobering, and a bit overwhelming. You scanned the crowd, lost in your own thoughts until you heard a familiar booming laugh from a tall, furry headed minotaur up near the dock.
You saw Sir Tavros clasping arms and laughing with someone, who you couldn't quite make out from this distance. Clearly a dear friend.
He then motioned downward, beckoning someone towards him, and who but Sisni emerges from the crowd to stand by him.
The man Tavros was talking to knelt down towards her level, and shook her hand. She shied and hid behind Tavros, and said something to him. He then looked up, around, saw you, and motioned for you to come over.
"Damnit Sis." You whisper to yourself as he motions for you to come to him.
"What did she say now."
You wonder to yourself as you move through the hugging families.
The crowd parts to let you through, and you can now see the man Tavros and Sis were talking to, and your breath catches.
He's incredibly handsome... handsome isn't even the right word, he's gorgeous.
He is tall, even standing next to Tavros, he comes to his shoulder. Long, thick, dark hair pulled back messily allowed for a stray strand to frame his angular face.
"Ah here she is!" Sir Tavros exclaimed.
"This was the beautiful lass I told you about Sire. She, and her sister have shown us all great hospitality."
SIRE?!? Aslans' ghost. It's King Caspian.
You immediately forgot how to walk, talk, or breathe.
They must have noticed you stop dead in your tracks, because King Caspian approached you smiling, and with his hand over his heart gave you a little bow, and held out his hand for yours.
You fumble awkwardly but manage to place your hand in his, and give the world's worst curtsey.
He brought your hand up to his lips, and kissed it. A tingle shot up your arm and you felt yourself turn beet red.
"It is my genuine pleasure to meet you, my lady. I cannot thank you enough for taking such good care of my crew."
You could have sworn you died. This can't be real.
The only thing that reminded you it was, was that Sis (without your noticing) had made her way to your side and poked you very hard in it.
You jumped slightly.
"Of course your Majesty, it was my honor and privilege." You managed to gasp out.
You made eye contact with him, and felt a warmth spread from your stomach downwards. His eyes were dark and deep, but warm. A scruffy, light beard framed his gentle smile. But Aslan, did he exude pride. Even if you didn't know he was the king, you would have felt weak in the knees in his presence. Fuck was he handsome...
You suddenly realized your hand was still in his. He gave a small laugh and smiled as he let go.
In a matter of seconds, the rest of the villagers realized who he was and began swarming him. You and Sis got pushed away and towards the edge of the group, Tavros followed.
"I hope it's alright miss, but I told his Majesty that he and the rest of the crew should stay at the inn with us. It is so much more comfortable than the ship."
Sis answered for you, "oh YES! how amazing that King Caspian will be staying at our inn! Right?"
She looked at you.
"Of.. of course. What an honor." You responded to them both, while internally panicking.
"We will go ahead and start preparing for their arrival, come on Sis."
You waved goodbye to Sir Tavros and headed back to the inn.
"Oh wasn't he just marvelous?!?" Sis gushed.
"He even called me miss! Can you believe he's going to be staying with us?!? Maybe he'll make me a princess?"
"Don't get your hopes up. " You smiled at her.
"What was all that about anyway? " she asked
"What?"
"You curtsied like a newborn deer, and You stared at each other for like...an hour... You were being so weird. "
"Was not." You felt yourself blushing again, thanking Aslan that it was getting dark so she couldn't see. "I was just thinking about all the work we have to do now to prepare for all these guests. I don't think we have enough rooms. "
You were actually thinking about that now. There was no way in hell you were going to give the King a shared room.. but the only other empty room was...
"You can give King Caspian Mother and Father's room?" Like she read your mind.
"We don't have a choice, do we?" You sighed. "Alright, let's hurry up and get back. We have a lot to do."
Back at the inn, you sent Sis to go prep whatever other beds were available while you stood staring at your parents' closed bedroom door.
" Just fucking do it." You scolded yourself. "it's for the King."
You took a deep breath and opened the door.
It took a minute for your eyes to adjust to the darkness, but the familiar smell of dried eucalyptus hit your senses like a brick wall.
Your mother always kept dried eucalyptus hanging in the window, she said it kept out pests and kept the room smelling fresh. She was right. Minus the dust, the room looked and smelled freshly cleaned, which you were extremely thankful for. Less to have to do.
You lit the lamps, and started dusting, and picking up anything that belonged to your parents that was left out. Your mother's hairbrush, father's shoes, and various other personal items each brought back vivid, and very specific memories. But you couldn't afford to dwell on them now. You silently thanked your parents for allowing the use of their room as you cleaned, taking mental images and caching them away so you could return everything to its rightful place as soon as you are able.
You didn't even notice Sis in the doorway.
"I don't think I've ever been in here." She almost whispered.
You started. "Crap, you scared me."
"Sorry."
"You have, but you were just a baby when they..."
"Got taken."
You both stood in silence for a while.
"It's a big room." She spoke first. "I think his Majesty will be happy with it."
"Yea.." you trailed off. The realization that the king... the incredibly good looking king...will be sleeping next door to you. The quickest thought of sharing a bed with him crossed your mind, you felt that warmth creeping downward again, and shook it out of your mind.
"Shall we get dinner started for the crew?" You asked her.
She nodded and you closed the door, feeling slightly guilty about thinking of the King in that way...

Chapter Three - Return of the King
Tumblr media
You hadn't slept so deeply in a long time. Though you stayed up very late with the crewmen, you woke up feeling well rested and... happy? Optimistic? You weren't sure of the feeling since it had become unfamiliar to you, but it was a nice one. You look over to the bed to your right, where you sister was still sound asleep. As silently as possible, you slip out of bed, throw on your robe, and sneak out of the room.
Standing outside the door you instinctively look to the right, down the hall to your parents' room. You can't even remember the last time you could bring yourself to open the door. A few times you considered moving out of your shared room into theirs, so you and Sis could each have your own, but doing so would mean admitting that they aren't coming back. Besides, what do you need extra space for?
You make your way down the other side of the hall, into the kitchen, reminding yourself that you need to prepare coffee and tea for more than just two today.     Once it's finished, you pour yourself a cup, and head into the common room to enjoy the silence before everyone wakes up.
The big front window looks out across the street towards the docks, and the sun rising over the horizon of the ocean makes for a beautiful view. It was one of the reasons your parents chose this building for the inn. Little by little you see the fishermen emerging from their homes, loading their boats, and casting off for the day, signifying the start of the work day.
A creak on the stairs makes you jump.
You turn your head, to see Sir Tavros coming down, looking more awake than he has any right to at this hour.
"Good morning," you greet him "did you sleep alright?"
"Like a bear in the winter." He responds, "It has been months since any of us had slept in a real bed. I almost didn't want to get up!" He laughed.
"Well, after breakfast you are more than welcome to go back to bed." You smile. "Coffee or tea?"
"Tea please, if it's not too much trouble. And I cannot allow us that luxury miss, we have much work to do in the village today. "
"Oh I was only joking. I can imagine there is a lot of mess to undo after the damage from the Slavers. "
"Oh yes, of course, my apologies. We Minotaurs are very literal beings, I forget sometimes man's sense of humor!
His Majesty constantly pokes fun at my expense because of it."
You smile at him as he sat in the chair across from you. " You and your crew seem to be very close with him. He must be a good man. "
You poured a cup of tea and handed it to him.
"Very much so. He is young, but wise beyond his years." Tavros drops some sugar into his cup.
" Young?" You asked confused. "Forgive me but, surely his Majesty must be in his 60's by now?"
Tavros looked at you as if you grew an elephant trunk.
" Lass, you don't think we have been speaking about King Caspian the IV this whole time?"
" What.... What other King Caspian is there?... " You felt like an absolute fucking idiot.
Tavros laughed the most booming, hearty laugh you have ever heard.
" His SON!! King Caspian X!"
You turned beet red.
" Oh forgive me young lass," he said between laughing, " it is completely my fault for not clarifying. Of course you would think we were speaking of his father! He was the last King you knew! "
" Wait.. so.. when did he have a son? When did he become king? "
Tavros then regailed an amazing tale of murder and war. Of kings and queens of ancient times. Of how Caspian X, an orphan by his uncle's hand, brought together two kingdoms and is correcting all the wrong his uncle did.
"But to your initial comment, " he ended his story, " yes, we love him dearly. Aside from his wisdom he is also very kind hearted, and gentle by nature, which makes him beloved by his people. I cannot express to you how saddened and angry he was that your Islands were in the state that they were. He felt personally responsible for it. "
" But he didn't know, he couldn't have. " You respond as he took a sip of tea.
" King Caspian... meaning his father...left us in good hands until the Slavers came back, and they ensured our isolation.
What's more is now I understand why we were left to fend for ourselves all these years. Lord Miraz wasn't about to give us any resources, was he? Poor Lorn Bern."
"Yes. We told him the same." Tavros explained. "But he holds his people so dear to him, he felt as if he let you down."
"Well. I can't speak for others but, I can say that his actions yesterday spoke volumes for me. He, and your crew, freed us. That is something Sis has never known in her life. To not have to wake up every morning in fear of today being the day they take her away is... well... foreign to us. Furthermore I will make sure the rest of the town knows the whole story. He can be sure no one will blame him."
"I am sorry for the years of suffering you and your sister endured." Tavros responded sincerely. " This is why we stayed behind. To get the Lone Islands into the same condition as the mainland. To assure everyone that they are safe, and well looked after again."
" Thank you. Truly. " you smiled, " your presence means more than you know. "
* * * * *
The next several months went by like a whirlwind. The old castle was in such disrepair that it was deemed unsalvageable, and construction has begun on a new one. Though it would be several more months before it was completed. As such the crew of the Dawn Treader stayed at your inn. Taking care of a full inn was fucking exhausting. Though after living together for all this time they felt like family, so you really didn't mind.
The kitchen had now been fully stocked consistently for the first time since you were a child, the wood was always chopped, and what's more is you didn't have to make a single item of clothing to sell in months.
One of the crew members, the Dwarf, was a banker back in Narnia, and he offered to help you set up a new business plan for the inn. Sir Tavros was more than gracious with his pay for their stay, and assured you that with the trade routes to the island back open, business would be consistent.
One day, you decided that you finally had enough saved up for some new fabrics. You and Sis desperately needed some new clothes. She went off to play with her new friends, (the townsfolk were now allowing the children to play outside together again), and the men were off patrolling. So you took the opportunity to go shopping.
It felt very strange, knowing this fabric was to be for clothes for you. You allowed yourself to pick things you liked, rather than what you knew others would. As you walked, you began to notice how many people actually lived on the island. You wondered how many more there would be if no one had been taken...
You suddenly realized that there only seemed like more people because everyone was crowding in the same direction. You looked around, and they were all hurrying towards the docks. You heard "ship" and "boats" mentioned as people rushed past you.
"What's going on?" You asked an elderly woman you recognized as one of the fishermans' wives.
"A big ship with purple sails was seen headed this way." She answered.
"Purple sails? " you repeat back.
" Yes! Which can only mean the King has returned to the Lone Islands! "

Chapter Two - Reopening
Tumblr media
You both spend the better part of the day cleaning up the mess the Slavers left behind. The entirety of the common room was turned upside down, but luckily, it seemed that they didn't do as much damage upstairs in the bedrooms. "They must have been interrupted by the fighting," you thought to yourself.
"I'm hungry!" You hear Sis call out from the room across the hall.
"Alright," you call back "I think we've earned a break!"
You each emerge from your respective rooms, and head downstairs. Sis heads into the kitchen, but you stop at the bottom of the stairs and look around the room.
You remember a time when this inn was full of travelers. The lit fireplace illuminated the room, while new and old friends shared stories of their travels. You can remember your mother carrying her tray of mugs, passing them out from person to person, a smile on her face. Your father somewhere in the crowd, laughing and sharing his own fish tales with a group of, who were previously, strangers. You used to hide behind the staircase, listening in on adventures, because you knew you were supposed to be in bed, asleep.
Now, the long dining table sat empty and lonely. The fireplace hasn't been lit in years, as what use was it heating an entire room that was never used.
You walked towards the big red chairs arranged in front of the fireplace, taking a moment to feel the fabric under your hand, and adjust the pillows for the ghosts who still visit in your mind.
"Aren't you coming?" Sis' voice snaps you back to reality.
"Yep, be right there." You respond, and head towards the kitchen yourself.
You start to search the pantry for something filling. You grab a single loaf of bread and hand it to her. "Ugh, I need to make it to the market tomorrow. We were supposed to go today but..."
"The Slavers..." Sis finished.
"But, it seems, we won't have to worry about them anymore!" You smiled at her. You dared to believe your own optimism for a minute. At the very least, they wouldn't dare return while the knights are patrolling the island.
"Slavers or not, we won't be able to get much, I'm afraid." You close the pantry door. "We don't have much coin left from the last set of clothes I sold, and no one on the island needs much else... or can afford it either... "
"Hmm.. maybe the soldiers need some stuff fixed? After the fight?" Sis offers, with a mouth full of bread.
"Huh." You think with a smile, "not a bad idea. I'll go out and see if I can find that nice Sir Tavros, and ask."
You grab your cloak and make for the door. "Finish eating and then start cleaning the next room ok? I won't be long." You instruct, as you reach for the latch. When suddenly, a knock from the other side scares you half to death.
You catch your breath and cautiously open the door, when to your surprise, a familiar minotaur is standing on the step.
"What a pleasant surprise!" He bowed, "so good to see you again so soon."
"I was just coming to find you!" You gave a relieved laugh, "what... what brings you here?"
"So sorry to intrude miss, but, we were told by some of the other villagers that this was the only inn on the island," he motioned to a few more soldiers standing behind him. "Without the Dawn Treader, and the castle in ruins, we find ourselves in need of lodging for the night."
"Oh! Uh.. of course.. sorry, it's just... " you're struggling to find a shortened way of explaining your life story to a total stranger. You try to compose yourself and clear your throat.
"Yes, this is the only inn. Of course you and your crew are welcome to stay. Though I must apologize, we haven't had any guests for several years, some of the accommodations might be...lacking..."
You step aside and motion for them to come in. Sis pokes her head out from behind the bar counter.
Tavros leads five other crew members inside: three men, a faun, and a dwarf.
"We're still cleaning up from the raid this morning," you explain "but most of the rooms are clean and comfortable."
"Sir Tavros!" Sis runs up to him. "Are you really going to stay with us!?"
"It seems so little one," he smiles, then turns to his crew.
"Ladies, these are my crew, fine gentlemen each of them, and brave soldiers all.
Lads, these lovely lasses are good friends of mine, as we are guests in their dwelling. I expect you all to behave as if King Caspian was still among us. Is that understood? "
A collective reply of "aye!" and "yes first mate!" responded.
"Is there anything we can do to help?" Tavros asks.
"Oh no, no." You reply. " Please, make yourselves at home. We'll get a fire going in the hearth, and Sis will show you each to your rooms."
You suddenly felt a conflicting combination happiness and stress... Looking around the room you are extremely thankful you at least kept up with the dusting, but how in Aslans' name are you going to feed all these men?
There are only a few logs left in the pile next to the fireplace, but you put a couple in and start a fire. Immediately the mood of the room begins to change. The warm orange light seems to wash over the furniture, like a coat of fresh paint.
Sis took the men up a few at a time and shows them the clean rooms, letting them decide for themselves which they would like. While the rest begin to spread about the room, relaxing in chairs. The faun even brought out his flute and began to play a fun melody.
"Uhm, Sir Tavros? Could I please have a word?" You ask him silently.
"Just Tavros, please." He smiled. "Of course miss, how can I be of service?"
"I'm afraid we don't have enough food for everyone." You explain ashamedly.
" We were meant to go to the market today but... "
" Not to worry my lady," he rested a hand on your shoulder. " We brought provisions, not knowing what to expect."
" But still..." you sigh "you are our guests and we should be providing food for you. If you give me a moment I can run down to the docks and see if the fishermen are still... "
" Hush now." He interrupted. "We are used to raw foods and meager meals. Anything warm will seem as a luxury to these men. Let's see what we can whip up with our provisions, and your kitchen, shall we? "
You give a soft smile. "Thank you."
You're not sure what you expected from a bunch of Narian soldiers, but it was definitely not kind, warm, and understanding. The rest of the night you spend refilling drinks, keeping fish soup hot, and laughing along with stories of their adventures.
You and Sis both sat awestruck at the tales they told of the swords the King was collecting, and his encounter with Lord Bern here on the island. (No one knew he was imprisoned in the cellars of his own castle the whole time!)
You learned that since the Kings departure, Lord Bern sailed back to the main land to recover, get supplies, and was meant to return in a few months time. It was also exciting to hear that a king and queen of old accompanied King Caspian on his current journey!
Before long, the hour turned late, and some of the soldiers began to retire. You told Sis that it was her turn to do the same. But as you continued your conversations long into the night, you swore you saw a head peek out from behind the staircase...

Chapter One - The Slavers
Tumblr media
You feel your way around in the dark, reaching for the doorknob. It turns and the door creaks open. You rush to your younger sister's bedside.
"Shh." You cover her mouth, " put on your shoes, we must leave, NOW." You whisper before shuffling over to your bed, and slide out a small, already packed, trunk from underneath it.
Sisni rubs her eyes and mumbles sleepily "It's not even light yet, where are we going?"
"The Slavers are here. I heard them dock a few minutes ago, which means we have less than an hour before they start raiding." You respond in a rushed whisper.
You still have nightmares about when they took your parents. You watched your mother being wrenched from your fathers arms, as you screamed in the doorway. They had both been taken to the auction post, but were sold separately. Seeing as your sister was too young to be of use to anyone, those bastards left you and her to fend for yourselves. After all, in order to raise the next generation of slaves a few girls needed to be left behind to care for them...
Though now, she is too old, and they would certainly take both of you to be sold as wives, or worse, sacrificed to the Darkness.
In one hand you hold the trunk handle, and with the other you take her hand, and slip out the back door.
The caves you plan to hide in are a good distance away, and in the dark the path will be difficult, but you have both rehearsed this trek several times.
"You remember what to do in case we get separated?"
"Yes." She responds quietly. "Stay hidden, don't go back home."
"Good."
You take a chance to look back as you notice the sky lightening. You can make out the flames from their torches, and the sounds of them kicking down doors, screams, as families continue to be torn apart.
You feel like a shitty person for leaving others behind, and wish you could have helped, but your only benefit is that it was just the two of you in the house. Your small town on the Lone Islands has overwhelmingly become an "every man for himself" type of community since the Slavers took back over.
By the time the sun had risen you and Sis had reached the caves, though finding one big enough where you didn't have to crawl on all fours was becoming a challenge.
Exasperated, you stop and kneel down to her level. "I might have to hide you in one of these on your own, and find another place to hide myself. I don't think I can fit in any of these with you."
She panicked, "No! You can't! We can fit if we just..."
"We have to be realistic. We might be in hiding for a while, sometimes those assholes stay for days."
"You can't leave me!" She begins to cry.
"I'm not leaving you, I'm just hiding you here for now, so I can find a better place for both of us. Then I'll come back and get you, ok?"
She nods, tears cleaning small streaks off her dirt covered face, "Don't take too long."
"I'll try not to," You smile at her, and motion to a very small opening to your left. "Stay in here, with the trunk. It looks like it goes in pretty deep and they won't be able to go very far in before getting stuck."
You wait until you see her feet disappear into the darkness of the cave before taking off, further into the hills. This was the last thing you wanted, but she will be safer in a smaller cave, anything big enough for both of you would be big enough for them to get into as well. This also allows you to be able to lead them further away from her if you need to.
Eventually, you find another hiding place, with a decent view of the village below. "This is good, I can see them coming, and I can see the shoreline." You tell yourself. "When they ship off we can go back home."
And then you wait.
And wait...
                            * * *
The sun is high in the sky before you peek back out. Their boats are still out there, and you notice another small boat coming towards the docks. "That's weird. They don't usually arrive in two parties." You think aloud. They must be taking a lot of people back with them this time.
You watch the boat dock, and only a few figures disembark. The rest stay on the boat, or on the dock. You can make out four figures making their way up the steps into the village. For a second you consider going to check on Sis, but you think better of it. "She knows to stay hidden, and she has all the provisions she needs." You assure yourself before going back into your hiding place.
You guess an hour passes before you hear a commotion down in the village. But not the screams of villagers, shouting yes, but excited, encouraging, and the clanging of swords. You look back out, to see if you can make anything out, but whatever is happening is in the town square, which is blocked by all the buildings. You hear cheering, and then notice a swarm of figures running towards the docks. Flinging themselves into boats, while a second swarm is chasing them? This can't be right. Who is chasing who? Are some of the villagers trying to escape? After a few minutes all you can hear is the roar of cheering voices. You have to go see what the hell is going on...
You make your way back down to Sis' little cave, and poke your head in, "Hey, it's me."
You can hear shuffling coming towards you. "Did you hear all that? What's going on?" Her head emerges.
"Stay in there" you warn, "I don't know, I couldn't make anything out but I'm going to sneak back down to try and find out. I've never heard anything like that before during an auction."
"Oh... can't I come too?"
"No. If it's safe I'll come back and get you."
She retreats back into the darkness, and you make your way back down the hill, keeping an eye and ear out for anyone coming up.
As you make it to the outskirts of the village, the celebrating gets louder. This is way too much for any auction the traders would be organizing. You hide behind buildings as you get further into the village, but the further in you get, the more people you notice freely walking around, talking excitedly and you can hear "King," and "savior" in conversations. You recognize them as other villagers. The next person who walks by, you stop them cautiously and ask for an explanation.
"Where have you been hiding?! King Caspian saved us all! He and his crew scared the Slavers off for good!" They exclaimed.
"King Caspian? I had thought the Narnians had forgotten all about the Lone Islands years ago... " You began to question.
"Apparently not, lass! His majesty even promised to leave some of his guards behind to make sure the traders never return!"
This is unbelievable. Too good to be true! You rush back to the hills to find Sis and tell her the good news.
"Who is King Caspian?" She asks. She was too young to have heard the stories of Narnia and its Kings and Queens when they were still relevant. You, however, remembered a time when the Lone Islands were safely under Narnias rule. You never bothered to tell her the stories...that was just not the reality she had known. So, as you both make your way back home, you relay as many stories as you can remember.
"I don't know much about King Caspian, but Mother and Father told me he was the one who put Lord Bern in charge, but even he was before your time. I remember the islands were much better with him in charge. Before he disappeared."
You remembered that day very well. The whole town was panicking as a menacing black smoke was seen drifting towards the islands, and the Lord was nowhere to be found. Not long after the slavers invaded, and that was the end of your childhood...
"So where has he been this whole time?" Sis asks you. "If he was such a great king, why would he leave us to the Slavers?"
You felt a twinge of resentment.
"I... don't know." You admit. "I suppose he thought we were in good hands. I can't imagine Lord Bern managed to get any word out before he was captured..."
"What makes him think we will be any safer this time?" She questions.
You look around as you walk back towards your house. You notice a good handful of guards in Narnian armor, ranging in species from men to fauns.
"They'll be ready for trouble this time, I expect." You point out that they all have weapons. "Last time, no one thought anyone would dare to challenge a Narnain king."
A minotaur guard makes eye contact with you as he passes, and gives you a nod. Sis stares up at him and without realizing states "he's so big!"
He turns around and chuckles, comes back towards you two and kneels down to her level.
"What is your name little one?" He asks.
"Si...Sisni" She stammers.
"Sorry Sir," you apologize, "we've never seen a minotaur in person."
"No apology necessary miss" he stands back up, and bows to you "Sir Tavros at your service."
"Are you really going to stay to protect us from the Slavers?" Sis asks him.
"Yes, as a knight of Narnia is it my duty, and my privilege, to keep you safe little Sisni."
"You can call me Sis" She smiles at him.
You prod her, "Sir..." you correct.
He chuckles again. "And you two can call me Tavros, anything you need, just find me."
You curtesy, "Thank you Sir..uh.. Tavros, and all of you for freeing us." You are so not used to practicing your manners... "Is his majesty still on the island?"
"No, I'm afraid not. He is on a quest to free this world from the Darkness, and wasted no time in continuing on. I would expect him to return on this way back to Narnia though, he will want a full report on the situation here."
"I hope to get to see him on his second trip!" Sis exclaimed loudly.
Sir Tavros smiled, "I'm sure he would love to meet you, precious one."
"Oh Sis," you laughed nervously "he's going to be way too busy to meet everyone in the village."
"On the contrary miss, his majesty enjoys meeting his subjects very much!" Tavros laughed. "I'll be sure to inform you personally of his return."
He bowed. "If you ladies would please excuse me, I must complete my patrol. It was an absolute pleasure to meet you both."
"Goodbye Sir Tavros!" Sis tried to curtesy, but it came off as more of a squat.
You managed a passable one as you smiled and said goodbye.
"I wonder what he's like?" Sis asked out loud as you reached your house, which was in shambles.
"The King?" You asked, beginning to pick up the few pieces of furniture that had been overturned while the Slavers were searching the house.
"Mhm. Looking to defeat the darkness...that's so scary...
Do you think Mother and Father ever got to meet him? "
" Hmm. It's possible. I know he was the first one to come to these islands in years back then. The only reason they opened the inn here in the first place was because he chased off the Slavers the first time.
Did you know there was a time when we could go swimming in the ocean?..."
You begin to tell her all the stories you could remember from before the Slavers...before the Darkness...before the Lone Islands became a horrible place to live...
"Maybe it will be like that again?" She hoped.
"Maybe..." you entertain her, but secretly, you don't believe that King Caspian would even bother coming back to your hovel of a town. You were still grappling with the surprise that a man his age could still fight.
