The march is going faster than I thought! But I'm looking forward to making more of the egg themed paintings for the upcoming Easters.
I also played a bit with a book mockup because I secretly dream to illustrate a book one day. Or a poster! Or just make art for the people and bring them together, inspire them and make them feel cozy. 🌠
I like both versions, with and without the "egg" so I've posted both. Which one do you prefer?🐤

What came first: the chicken or the egg? 🐣 I'm not painting chicken, but the birds I remember seeing in old illustrated fairytale books. It would be nice to have those books again but, alas, a flood ruined my family's home library and I have to satisfy myself with the memories that are left.

My entry for the final prompt of the Magic Moon Week 2024 🌙 The prompt for today is Moonlit Ritual. 🪔
When I think of moonlit rituals, there has to be a bonfire. When I was a child, I spent a lot of time in the countryside where my grandparents lived. It's a typical Slavic village that has its customs and beliefs so, I spent a good chunk of my childhood listening to the stories of old. We would light a bonfire (not as big, but mesmerizing enough to spark the imagination of the children who sat around to listen to these tales.
Night, bright moonlight, and bonfires always evoked in me something mystical. Everything goes dim, the line between the shapes gets blurry, and the fires give just enough of a hint of what's to be experienced.
As I researched what kind of rituals were there (and some maybe still are), I stumbled upon Kupala Night.
"Kupala Night is one of the major folk holidays of the Eastern Slavs. [...] The name of the holiday is ultimately derived from the East Slavic word kǫpati "to bathe"."
While there is no water in my painting, I wanted to simulate its presence by making the fire "flow" towards the moon, just like a river, bending and moving in a rhythmical way.
"Kupala Night is filled with rituals related to water, fire and herbs. Most Kupala rituals take place at night." Some of those looked like this: "On Kupala Night, "bride and groom" were chosen and wedding ceremonies were conducted: they jumped over the fire holding hands, exchanged wreaths (symbol of maidenhood), looked for the fern flower and bathed in the morning dew."
Now, the most magical element of the ritual for me is the fern flower: "The most unusual tradition is the search for a fern flower, which, according to legend, blooms only on Kupala’s night. The flower is endowed with magical powers. Whoever plucks it can understand the language of animals and plants and see hidden treasures. And, of course, a flower will promise love and happiness."
I thought, the flower of my painting has to be in the fire, as something hard, almost impossible, to reach. Just like the rare fern flower from the story.

My 2nd entry for the Magic Moon Week 2024 🌙 The prompt for today is Spellbound Forest. 🌳
For this piece I had a more open (read: imagination went wild😂) approach with acompanying research. The first image I had in my mind was that of the Forest Spirit Shishigami from the Ghibli's movie Princess Mononoke.
While that was my initial inpsiration, the stag-like creature as the symbol of the forest, I imagined that the forest and a magical castle itself should be nested in the antlers of the stag. Existing in a spiritual yet tangible dimension.
Back to the Forest Spirit Shishigami: as a continuation to Lunar Medicine prompt, I thought of the spirit's abilities. "It is implied that Forest Spirit repeatedly dies and reincarnates especially on new moons and full moons."
There are 12 tiny moon-like pearls under the stag's neck to symbolise 12 lunar months of the lunar calendar. "It is based on the cycles of the Moon, which is approximately 29.5 days long. As a result, most lunar calendars have 12 months, each consisting of either 29 or 30 days, for a total of 354 or 355 days in a year." The real cool part of the lunar calendar for me is its appearance in various cultures across the globe which I didn't want to share here but if you're interested, I advise you to google about it. 🌛
...
"In Japanese mythology, the Forest Spirit is called Yatsukamizuomitsuno, who is worshipped in Nagahama, Shiga. His origin is from buddhism script The Kasuga Deer Mandala, where it is seen as a deer with a tree on his head. It is the power that forms a planet."
Hence the inspiration of the nested forest.
Hope you like!

My 1st entry for the Magic Moon Week 2024 🌙 The prompt for today is LUNAR MEDICINE. 🌿
It was quite fun to do a research for this piece. I learned that BLUE is the color that represents medical practice (while green presents health itself!)
Also, "most medical products currently and historically have used greens, blues and colors in the neutral space of whites/greys. There are several reasons for that. Most importantly, the cool colors – blues and greens – are calming colors, which is what you want in the anxious environments of hospitals and clinics.
The moon represents our deepest feelings and instincts.
In astrology, the moon is associated with the deepest part of ourselves that can't be easily described with words. It represents our spiritual nature and subconscious mind—the unseen things within that dictate our actions."
All this inspired me to create a mystcal, somewhat esoteric, circular yet framed representation of Lunar Medicine.
"The circle is a universal symbol with extensive meaning. It represents the notions of totality, wholeness, original perfection, the Self, the infinite, eternity, timelessness, all cyclic movement, God ('God is a circle whose centre is everywhere and whose circumference is nowhere' (Hermes Trismegistus))."
And of course, the botanical elements inspired by national costumes of the Vlaška region (Eastern Serbia) and common medicinal plants that have special nocturnal effects such as Valerian root and St John's wort.
Among the people of Serbia, it's long believed that people of Vlaška region have a very potent magic (to heal, or to curse) so the magical, supernatural, element is traditionally present in the belief system of the region.
Hope you like!
