Hello :)
I'm not really anyone important, just a random finnish girl and I like to keep this Disney's Mulan blog. I saw the movie when I was 12 and I immediately fell in love with it. I mainly do this for my own amusement and of course because I want to...
I'd just begin from scratch really. I tried to come up what would I keep from the existing sequel and I think that's maybe just the yin-yang necklaces. Which were a deleted idea from the first movie anyway.
Easy and lazy answer would be to go with whatever idea they had in Mulan 2's deleted scene, battle sequence, (check it out, it's super cool). It's like spy-ninja-duo of Mulan and Shang working like a badass couple. Mulan 2 concept arts (part 1, part 2) are not too bad either, and although they definitely have some usual Disney sequel cliches(eg. having the girl Mushu dragon), I'd still think I could enjoy it a bit more than what they ended up with.
Then there's Barry Cook's draft, aka the co-director of the original movie wrote synopsis for the potential sequel when he heard that Disney was considering of doing sequel to Mulan. In fact there was going to be Mulan 3 as well, apparently Mulan 2 ruined it as it was too badly received. There's hardly anything known of Barry Cook's draft details, just that soon-to-be-married Mulan and Shang are sent to north since things are happening there, and at the end there would have been an epic battle between Mulan's ancestors and Shan Yu's deceased army.
Actually I lied earlier what would be easiest and laziest. That would be just doing the visual novel The Palace of Secrets. Seriously I wouldn't change a thing.
There's many directions where one could go with the sequel really, some fanfics have done pretty amazing job exploring different options. I have made a post where I put up some fanfic recommendations, but some are like one-shots so they could hardly be sequels.
Personally, rather than a sequel movie I really really would like to see Mulan tv-series. Something like Tangled: the Series. It could have the sillier filler episodes but the main plot could be epic. Series could also make possible to explore side characters' character arc in more detail. I have played with this idea before too, with my friend @mulanxiaojie.
I'm quite satisfield how the first movie ended, but I'll list some pointers that I and I think most would like to see in a continuation story:
Mulan getting a career
Mulan and Shang getting together
Chi Fu x Matchmaker :P
And then some that are not really necessary but would be really interesting to see, just to list some of the potential sequel tv series could have:
Fa Zhou's past
Mulan's and Granma Fa's relationship
seeing the other guardians besides Mushu (and the Great Stone Dragon)
developing Gang of Three as invidual characters
exploring historical China
an actual villain (should be basic but the sequel didn't have that)
Hi, I dunno if you're gonna respond to this question right away but did you know that Mulan and Shang had two kids? Though their names are quite questionable.
https://descendants.fandom.com/wiki/Lonnie
Hi! Unfortunately I am aware of Descendants, though I have never seen any movies. Personally I think those movies less canon than direct to DVD sequels, which is one of the reasons why I haven't bothered with them.
Yeah the names are questionable at best and somewhat offending at worst, I actually find some palace pets names sligthly more fitting. For anyone who doesn't now these supposed kids names, they're Lonnie and Li'l Shang.
If you or some people out there like the Descendants movies that's all cool, it's just not my cup of tea and I don't really link them to any Disney movie that it borrows characters from. So long story short in my view Mulan and Shang have no canon children, I don't even consider Mulan 2 canon. I think there's just maybe few short comics that I could see kinda fitting with the first movie's setting, and the sequel I wish more people knew and read is definitely The Palace of Secrets, a visual novel that takes place about a year after the first movie.
Hello! I just found your blog through that scan of a comic where Mulan makes a wind chime. I was searching for a specific one from the same magazine. It was a comic where there was a fashion show and Mulan took a white cloth and left lipstick marks all over it to make a hanfu. It was so cool to me, I recently remembered about it and I think it definitely impacted my love for fashion nowadays haha, so it'd be cool to see it again. Anyway, thank you and sorry for bothering!
Hi, nice that you came by to ask. Unfortunately I do not have that specific comic though, but I put another fashion related comic under the "read more" as a consolation gift if you will.
Some of the lyrics from the original rendition of Reflection before they were removed from the finished film. Lea Salonga, the singing voice of Mulan, always preferred the longer draft of the song and whenever she performs the song in public it is this original version she sings. “In 1995, I was called in for the first of three recording sessions for Mulan. The first session I got to sing this huge, majestic number called Reflection. It was long, it was beautiful, it was long…and as a singer I love singing long songs, having come from a musical theater background. The next year, session number two, I think it was one of the animators and one of the composers who had to sit me down and say, ‘um, your song wasn’t really moving the story along so we had to cut it in half.’ And of course I’m heartbroken. So, the finished version is short. So, and this is going to be in spite of Walt Disney rising from the grave to kick me in the ass, whenever I have opportunities to sing Reflection I sing the longer version of the song.”
Because why not? Which is your favorite?
(And I know she also has a third blue & red outfit but it would most likely be a variation on one of these outfits in those colors so... I decided against.)

Hi! I was wondering if you could help me! Apparently Disney released a storybook following the events of Mulan 2. Do you happen to know what it’s called? Thanks in advance!
Hello!
Unfortunately this is the first time I hear of any story taking place after the sequel, frankly finding storybook about the sequel is kinda hard already. Mulan 3 was apparently in plans around the time they made the sequel but somehow it never became more than that. Mulan's deleted Enchated Tales story might have taken place after the sequel but honestly it's hard to tell from few scenes from the trailer. Either way that was never released either, and other than these I really have no idea of what Disney would have planned for Mulan after Mulan 2.
However I feel like you might mean "The Palace of Secrets", Disney's comic book released in 2020, which takes place after the first movie and actually is very good. It doesn't really even take place in between the movies since the time doesn't add up, Mulan 2 is just a month after the first and Palace of Secrets happens during spring festival. In my eyes, The Palace of Secrets is the sequel to Mulan. and I kinda wish that disney would make a tv series out of it but on the other hand I don't trust disney to not ruin it
But since I could be wrong of what you meant and there's some other storybook going around that you're looking for, I'm sorry, I don't know what it could be. I tried googling but nothing came up. Nevertheless I hope you'll check this one out at least, as a consolation if not else :)
Hi there, I was wondering if you could help me. When I was about 8 (2006) my used to get me the Disney Princess magazine. There were often little comic strips in the magazines about the various princesses. I am trying to find on particular comic strip about Mulan. In it she uses broken shards of glass to make colourful wind chimes. Can you help me find this?
Hello! Ah the nostalgia of DP magazines. Well it just happens that my DP magazine collection is the best around 2005-2008ish, although mine are all in finnish and I don’t know where you’re from but hopefully the magazines had more or less the same stories.
In that story of yours, did Mulan also have 4 other friends there? In my magazine the shards were called porcelain shards but would this happen to be the one you mean?
(rest under cut)
If it was different one I’m sorry, this was the only story I have where Mulan makes a wind chime. As for where you could find the different story I’m afraid I can’t give you much of a clue, I have found really few full DP magazine scans online and even fewer with Mulan (I think the only ones I have found I have already posted/linked here earlier). You can of course still try googling or somehow find a copy of the original magazine.
If this was correct one you’re welcome, I’m glad I could help. If the finnish language is a problem please message/comment and I’ll give you direct english translation.
Audiences will get another shot of the iconic warrior as China is releasing their own version of the story in a new film titled Fight MULAN which will hit theaters next year some time.
A new poster is currently making the rounds which shows off lead actress Ning Yang who is looking battle ready on the new key art as she will be playing the famous role. Take a look at it below courtesy of our friends over at Asian Film Fans!
