Introducing - Stellar Regions - my new stream of consciousness sketchbook, a concept & way that is very much imbedded within my practice as an artist & in a broader sense a mode of operating that is present through my life. The idea of impulse, instinct & intuition being at the forefront of ones action, an instinct that can be developed so the hand & soul are left to interpret, express & channel without the clutter of the second guessing unfree thinking self getting in the way. My last 2 sketchbooks worked under the same idea, page after page, each a true expression of the moment, taken purely & sporadically from the ethos. This time round I simply decided to bring the book to life by naming it, which itself occurred spontaneously as I was listening to John Coltrane’s album - Stellar Regions & it felt fitting that the same improvised nature should inspire this collection, hence in honour of my love for Coltrane & the method of improv & instinct, (be it in music, painting, poetry or dance) this book became - Stellar Regions (Encountering The Subconscious). Of course I am not the first artist to become aware of such things, from the Beat Writers to Charlie Parker 🎷 to the Abstract Expressionist’ , Indeed the very nature itself is archaic & surely goes back to the beginning of time itself. & all that information is still whirling around this vast unknowable universe, now it is my job to blindly pull it out, so we can all get a good look at it. ;) . Hey everyone! The Zellermayer Galerie which I work with here in Berlin has just put up my jazz series! 9 pieces I created at the @werkstatt_der_kulturen improvised works after live performances of musical compositions from the likes of Coltrane & Mingus, the series is also accompanied by my portrait of John Coltrane.
