my contributions to the 2024 dan and phil tarot deck @dnptarot !! posting both a version with my own borders + a version with the deck's official borders since i made both. i had waay too much fun with these so see under the cut for me rambling abt symbolism if u want !!

king of cups:

for this card, which is all about empathy, understanding, and offering support and guidance, i referenced the moment in 'i try to give dan a haircut' where dan thanks phil for supporting him throughout his life. in relationships, this card signifies 'a loving and devoted partner who creates connections based on patience and understanding' which just immediately made me think of that moment.

in terms of the imagery, the king of cups typically sits on a throne (in this case, an office chair). in one hand, he holds a cup representing emotions (in this case, a drink phil made for dan to drink while they were doing something that stressed dan out), while the other hand grasps a scepter (in mine, a pen), symbolizing power and control (this was the era of dan’s book, his first big solo project). unlike other Cups court cards, the king of cups gazes away from his cup (in this case, looks towards phil), suggesting some mastery over his emotions. a fish (norman the betta) jumps out of the ocean on his right (this fish tank is literally over dan's right shoulder in the video), representing the unconscious (in one of the stereo shows, dan talked about dreaming about norman jumping out of his tank, so the literal definition of unconscious is incredibly apt there), while a ship sails steadily on his left (this was too perfect for me not to interpret phil as his ‘ship’, being literally over his left shoulder), symbolizing the material world. these images demonstrate his ability to maintain calmness and balance, keeping power and control while navigating his emotions. (this video ends with phil's secret message where he talks about how much dan has grown and become happier; that, plus the support expressed by phil in this video for this card all about support and emotional growth, made me immediately think of this moment for this card)

page of cups:

the page of cups is a card all about surprising new beginnings, creative opportunities, or people coming to you out of the blue. in relationships, it can represent a new relationship, especially a playful, creative and emotional relationship, and the page also represents youth and innocence, so i wanted to draw the 2009 era. the card can also signify messages coming to you, specifically 'messages coming from a person younger than you', so i took the literal interpretation of drawing dan messaging phil, back before they'd met in person. the page of cups is also supposed to indicate psychic abilities, so i put phil in his outfit from the video where he predicted that an 'energetic warrior' was going to come into his life, back before he met dan. the young page in this card is supposed to be creative, artistic and a dreamer, which makes me think of their (especially phil's) early, more experimental youtube videos where they were just playing around and it was all creativity.

in terms of imagery, the page traditionally wears a tunic with designs of water lilies on it, which symbolize beauty emerging in ugly places (in mine, they're on dan's t-shirt, since this is when he was still in the midst of an incredibly difficult time in his life, but also when 'through the magic of the internet' he met phil). the page holds a cup of water, symbolising happiness and creativity (i gave both dan and phil a cup, linking their happiness and creativity to each other at this point in time). traditionally, there is a fish leaping out of the cup, symbolising the unexpected (i chose to put the fish as a design on their laptops, since the bond they were forming back then was probably the most surprising & unexpected thing. they couldn't possibly have known how much was going to grow out of them meeting back then). overall, this card tells you to trust the left turns and explore whatever surprises life gives you.

So uh… my old color palettes started blowing up out of nowhere and it made me wanna make a new batch and ‘remix’ some of the older ones. The fun part about this one is that all of the palettes are named after (and sorta based on) songs I’ve listened to or added to playlists!
