Little late to the #Nativember trend!  Better late than never right? So, let me tell you all the story behind the Taino Girl and her Coqui. This illustration is a more personal artwork of mine, as someone who is Puerto Rican with Taino roots in her veins.

For the longest, the stories about the Tainos of Puerto Rico and as a descendant of a large Puerto Rican family for generations, I wondered about my ancestry. Where was my family from? Do we have Indigenous roots? We were told that Tainos weren’t Indigenous, that we don’t exist.

It wasn’t until like about… 3 - 4 years ago when my family took an ancestry DNA test and found out that we have indigenous DNA from the Taino tribe. That explained a lot with my eye shape. 😂 I had such an identity crisis from other people trying to figure out who I am.

After finding out that my family and I have Taino blood in our DNA, it made me happy to know how much closer we are to Puerto Rico. I never got a chance to visit the island; to see and meet family there. Now with 2020 and high crime after Hurricane Maria, it’s too dangerous.

I hope one day my parents and I can take a trip when it’s safe to travel again. For now, I brought my own little Puerto Rico with me. The Taino Girl and her Coqui. 🐸🏝
