Peek-a-boo. I walked past this same log the other day and it reminded me of this precious moment where I'd photographed a stoat. I'd seen it run across this fallen log out of the corner of my eye from some 50 yards away. It then dived into a hole in the log. I got myself as close to the log as I could and held my lens in place because I knew that the slightest bit of movement would scare it off. So, an hour and a half had passed and I was still holding a large wildlife lens in place when suddenly this little beauty appears from behind the log. After around 15 seconds it darted into the undergrowth and I could finally lower my arms 😂 I was in so much pain from holding for the shot, but that was trounced by the absolute delight I felt in capturing this beautiful stoat. I couldn't believe I'd been there for an hour and a half, stood like a statue waiting for this special moment which eventually came. Silently Waiting. A red fox appears out of nowhere 😍 So, I was walking through some fields that had rough growth on the edges and I managed to see a pair of muntjacs, male and female, so I stopped in my tracks, found cover and kept edging closer to them. I got some great shots of them, then while I hid in the overgrowth just taking a moment to see if another muntjac might make an appearance, this red fox strolls in from a hole in the hedge. Casting A Shadow. A massive female common buzzard gliding overhead. I initially noticed the enormous shadow of the bird moving on the floor slightly ahead of me and when I turned around to look up, I was greeted with this stunning view. It wasn't too far from the ground either so I was able to get a really lovely, closer than usual, view of her. She circled above for a while as she got more and more distant from me, eventually being taken by the wind and gliding out of sight. Over The Shoulder. A wall lizard gives me 'the look' as it slowly disappears into some leaf litter. These lizards are so hard to spot amongst the fallen leaves, but when you do, it's so amazing to see them so it's totally worth spending the time to find them 😄 This individual moved slow enough for me to capture this pose just before it ran into a bunch of leaves and vanished. The Body Snatcher. A male barn owl flies straight towards me, giving me the perfect opportunity to capture the special moment. I'd been surveying this barn owl over the course of 2 weeks, watching its flight routes and where it likes to hunt. The other day I felt that it was time to use the knowledge I'd built over my previous sightings of him and to finally get into position for 'the shot'. My aim was to capture a head-on shot of this incredibly beautiful bird of prey. It began with me spotting him flying rather high across the river and over to another break in the river, I took this as my opportunity to get myself into position and hide myself among a small bush, which would conceal me. I waited around 45 minutes and then I saw him fly over the reedbed in the distance and coming my way. My excitement and nerves grew with every beat of his wings as he approached, when suddenly he took a sharp left and disappeared over a bank. Then a minute later he reappeared over the bank flying straight towards me and that's when I captured this photograph. Behaving By Name. This is a speckled wood butterfly looking speckled on some wood, or a tree trunk to be precise 😄 I often come across them in woodlands around berry bushes or nettles, so it was really nice to see one on the trunk of a tree. Close Compadrê. I was in a field tracking a pair of buzzards when they finally flew out of sight behind a row of trees. After checking a few of my shots, I noticed something move ever so slightly in the corner of my eye, amazingly a hare had walked to with 10 feet or so of me. I was hidden myself, within the bottom of a hedge, so it must not have seen me. I couldn't believe how close it was and it stayed there for around 5 minutes before it finally clocked me and ran off into the distance. Sleep With One Eye Open. This is a Crested gecko and they actually sleep with both eyes open. The gecko in this photograph is fast asleep. When a crested gecko is awake, its crests “stand up” while their crests lay down when they are sleeping. Also, the pupils are large and wide when they're awake and will be tiny slits when asleep. In Time For The Storm. A male barn owl flies towards home as the light changes and raindrops begin to fall. The wind picks up strength and just as he makes it home, I feel the first drop of rain on my face. It is also time for me to make my way to shelter. I find shelter under a large tree with my camera covered to protect it from the rain. I emerge some 20 minutes later to almost darkness. It was a freak dusk shower and as fast as it became a heavy downpour, the rain had subsided and it was fine to finally make my way back to my car. If it hadn't have rained, I wouldn't have seen the barn owl flying to get out of the rain, so I was in the perfect place at the perfect time. Tower Bridge: Lights At Night. A landscape photograph of Tower Bridge, which often seems to be confused with London Bridge. On this particular night, it was so very cold, but the water wasn't frozen like how it seems to be in these images. These photos were taken using a long exposure that tends to make water look smooth and still, looking like a frozen effect.
