No, it is never explained. The line is kept, but Erik's life outside the theater is completely eliminated (since, as you said, it is mentioned that after his escape from the freak show as a kid he never left the theater).

In the 2004 Phantom of the Opera movie, does it ever explain why Raoul has to keep his hand at the level of his eye? I can't remember, but wouldnt there would be no reason for that Erik to be the king of strangers if he was never in India for an extended amount of time (I think it says he grew up in the opera house?) I have been pondering this lately. Maybe it was so he wouldn't see Erik's face or something?
