I fully agree that Boromir is being manipulative in this particular movie scene. But the fact that we were shown his empathy in other ways is what makes this so good. Because we know he can be a very empathetic person!
That’s part of what makes this particular bit of manipulation all the more sinister, in my mind. Boromir knows Frodo has seen the parts of him that are good, worthy, and noble. And he knows too, that Frodo is afraid.
Consciously done or not, he is taking advantage of that fear, hoping for Frodo to give up the Ring willingly.
“Just give It to me, little one. I am so much stronger. I have the men of Gondor to help me. You can be free of this suffering if you would just give It to me!”
“You suffer. I see it day by day.” IMO, this is a very underrated line of Boromir’s in the film, because it shows not only his observant and perceptive nature, but more importantly, his empathy. He knows exactly what it’s like to constantly carry a heavy burden alone on your shoulders. On this level, he actually understands Frodo deeply, and genuinely wants to help him. He really is a well-meaning friend. This particular line isn’t in the book, but it captures Boromir’s essence very well and I think Tolkien would’ve approved of it.

Y’all who think ANY of the hobbits would say such a thing are out of your minds. Did we read the same books? Did we watch the same movies?

Has someone else’s fanart worked its way so deeply into your heart and mind that their version of a character is now cannon? That’s @frodo-with-glasses for me.
Is Frodo’s hair canonically brown? Yeah, but actually see, he’s blond. And he’s got glasses, obviously.
Is Pippin canonically covered in freckles? Well, we aren’t explicitly told no, so the answer is obviously yes.
And does Gollum ever get dressed up as a kingfisher or squirrel? Canonically no, but I’ve been cursed blessed with that art and it’s never leaving my brain so….

Absolutely, and they call her Wyn or Wynnie. She’s the youngest child, looks just like her mother, and is low key her dad’s favorite.

So we got Small Child a handheld scanner and he has no desire to do any read alouds for the time being. Every moment he has to spare is spent either up a tree or on the top of his swing set listening to dispatchers and defect detectors. So…. I have no idea when you will get any of his commentary on Return of the King.

Movie Frodo: Sweet, gentle, trusting, brave. Very much feels like he's a bit of a damsel in distress. I love him tho.
Book Frodo: feisty, committed petty mushroom theft regularly as a kid, first response when faced with an elder itch horror is to stab it. I also love him.

This passage is never going to stop being hilarious. Spontaneously reciting poetry because Goldberry is just THAT enchanting is golden and I am so glad Tolkien gave it to us.

Whenever someone says, “I’m tired,” I have to bite my tongue so hard to make sure I don’t follow up with, “Tired and cold?” And @nowandforalways it is your fault and I love you for it.

Hey, want some LotR feels today? Here, have some LotR feels.
Look at all the details! Sam washing Frodo’s hair might be my favorite but it is so hard to choose because she put SO MUCH here and it is all wonderful.

Small Child’s Thoughts on “The Choices of Master Samwise”
Um, yeah, I just don’t like spiders and it’s bad that Shelob is going to eat Frodo. She’s gonna suck out all his blood and that’s just going to be bad.
Is that a really big, giant spider? Would it be giant to us too, even though we are not hobbits? (Oh, yes! She is probably about as big as your sister’s bedroom.) Too big! That is too big for an arachnid. Or an insect. But spiders are not insects. Too many legs.
Can I just call that thing the Flashlight of Galadriel?
Is Frodo really killed? (He isn’t breathing and he doesn’t have a heartbeat.) Oh. Yup, he’s just dead dead then. (How do you feel about that?) That gets a big thumbs down from me. It will just get a big thumbs down from me every time Frodo gets killed because that’s really bad.
Mom, why do you have tears? (I just… I just really love this story.) No, I think it’s because Frodo is dead and he’s your favorite. (Yes, maybe so.) Yeah. I’m just usually right.
Well, I just think Sam has to take the Ring because Frodo is dead. And that’s a thumbs down. But they still have to put it in the volcano because that’s the whole story, right?
Sam is thinking too much and not doing enough. He still needs to go NOW.
Sam should not do that. He should hide. The orcs are going to get him. He should just keep going.
If I were an orc, I would go very, very fast through Shelob’s tunnels. I would just go 90 miles an hour and she couldn’t catch me. (Do you think orcs can run 90 miles per hour?) Um, if I were an orc, I could.
Ha! Sam is not an elf. But Sting is an elf sword so the orcs are a little right.
Woah, woah, woah. Frodo is not dead? (No!) Well… well… then why did you cry?!
This is NOT a good place to end a book.

"'Now for it! Now for the last gasp!' said Sam as he struggled to his feet. He bent over Frodo, rousing him gently. Frodo groaned; but with a great effort of will he staggered up; and then he fell upon his knees again. He raised his eyes with difficulty to the dark slopes of Mount Doom towering over him, and then pitifully he began to crawl on his hands.
Sam looked at him and wept in his heart, but no tears came to his dry and stinging eyes. 'I said I'd carry him, if it broke my back,' he muttered, 'and I will!'
'Come, Mr. Frodo!' he cried. 'I can't carry it for you, but I can carry you and it as well. So up you get! Come on, Mr. Frodo dear! Sam will give you a ride. Just tell him where yo go, and he'll go.'"
