LMK Analysis: The Circlet Scene

"I've never let anyone dictate my destiny in the past and I'm not about to start now. None of us are! We can't change who we were yesterday or in a past life or a hundred lifetimes ago. We live with the choices we've made but what matters is the choices we make right now. Only we decide who we are and what we do with the power we have!"

"Nice hero speech bud, but you know better deep in your hearts, you don't believe a word of that."

So. That happened.

The circlet is some recurring imagery in LMK, but this scene hit really, suspiciously hard.

First of all, the ink clone emphasizes the concept of "role" when speaking to Wukong, all the while removing the circlet on its head and spinning it effortlessly. The same one he could never willingly remove.

The Monkey King, when on the Journey to the West, was forcibly inserted into a role that didn't fit. Any time he made a choice to step outside that role as defined by Tripataka, he was punished harshly with the headache/torture device strapped to his head that he couldn't get off.

That's some trauma.

Just as Wukong is finishing his rallying heroic speech about choice, he is abruptly reminded that more often than not, he had no choice in the matter for what he used his power for and who he was supposed to be. Be a good little monkey who takes the verbal abuse (because according to JTTW, often no one believed his words of a demon in diguise) and take the physical abuse when you try to step outside of that role and use your power against those against you.

His destiny was dictated from the moment he had that put on, and even now he is kludged into a role he wants to escape from without much control over it at all, always having to be what other people either want or need him to be.

Sun Wukong is stuck in the role of a Hero, constantly forced into being the invincible, infallible paragon persona due to his power, giving him little choice. He tried to escape that with retirement, but it caught up with him.

So in essence, he still has a metaphorical circlet strapped to his head that he can't remove without incredible pain and suffering occurring, but also actively causes him the same thing.

The thing is? Wukong was always trying to go at it alone.

Now? He actively has friends trying to help, if only he would learn to let them in a bit more.

So JJK is over and my LMK brainrot is back , added with the fact i am playing a MOBA game and am being blessed with delicious illustrations it prompted me to make this

Now i am going to ramble about this because this is the first time in forever where i kinda pushed myself to make a FULL art piece-

I will be standing for this-

Let me tell you, i had no confidence in this and the composition was supposed to be way different, but this still happened. This took two days because i kept procrastinating , walking around my room dreading drawing the background BIG ADVICE FOR BEGINNER ARTISTS Watch speedpaints. You will learn so much by watching the process and that was this for me I have the tendency to kinda burn myself out and finish everything in a day and then never actually finishing. Tried something different for this and made a cheap silhouette of a sketch, then drew over that and used greys and whites fort the shadows. Then i think i colored everything in a base color (and i finally used a palette) and then i tried to find the lighting and shadow colours. It was weird. And what im saying is that i planned most of it instead of diving head in withour a plan. Crazy i know-

I also just learned about dpi PROPERLY and unfortunately made my piece so big that it kept stalling paint tool sai-

I also fucked up macaques reference and fixed it in a whim somewhere. You can see it here. I honestly wasn't planning to follow the lmk at style but that kinda happens when you're starring too much at the references.

There's still a mess and i wanted to render it a bit better ,the way i normally do but i didn't. Anyways i did enjoy the process and i actually miss them so much and i might watch LMK all over again Especially Wukong and MK

PART 3 OF THIS AU BECAUSE I AM NOT DONE WITH THE BRAINROT OVER IT HOLYYY.

this one’s special for me cuz it pays tribute to one of my two fav numbers from the movie, a million dreams and from now on (now those are GOOD, but there’s no denying that the underrated ones are come alive and from now on)

the more i think abt it the more i love this au, the parallels between the movie’s characters and the show’s characters are crazyyyy,, wukong has always wanted more and and more and macaque is always just there like “bro can we just be happy with what we have??” wukong just goes NOPE and goes off to perform in different places (or in the lmk universe’s case, mess with heaven and end up on tjttw)

also let’s normalize lmk characters in 1800s outfits because honestly they fit those super well <3 thanks for reading this!! 💅 i don’t feel lonely anymore lol thank you guys for supporting this au thru and thruuu <3

backkk with the greatest showman x lego monkie kid au thingy !! thank you to @lozfanchick for fleshing stuff out for me, really cleared my mind ehhebfh they wrote a full on analysis (much deeper than my puny brain could ever do) on how the au could work plotwise, sO DEFINITELY CHECK THAT OUT

i remembered that i left out macaque in my last drawing sO HERE HE IS IN ALL HIS GLORY MWAH, little rich pressured guy paired up with the other guy who has nothing and they slowly fall in loveeernende wahsgahha (these monkies make me sob)

honestly all of these are just screenshot redraws of scenes from the movie so i can’t say i own the whole thing!! i DO own the drAWING THO SO DONT STEAL. i’m watching 👀
