Tetsurō Kuroo x Gender Neutral Reader
Mentions- sitting in a restaurant. Kuroo feels bad but not that bad. Reader is disappointed. Angst. Miscommunication.
Word count- 486
Notes- wow, I’m alive. Love Kuroo but missing that angst. A lil vent I guess. No beta. Enjoyyyy.

Kuroo sat in the booth of a small cozy cafe. He glanced down at his knuckles as he clenched his fists slowly. Uncomfortable, discomfort, guilt and a bit of anxiety riddled him to his core. But the worst of all, he just wanted to leave. His warm hazel eyes slowly trailed from his unclenching and clenching fists to across the table… and there you sat. Your face looked like a mix of shocked, disappointed and hurt. His eyes met your eyes and he exhaled sharply. His fingers went through his hair before he slumped back in his seat. What could he say to you? What else could he do?
“So… I’m just a rebound then…? You don’t really want anything to do with me unless it’s intimacy…?” You asked unsurely. Like you wanted this to be a sick prank. But there was no laugh. No cheeky smile or anything obvious from Kuroo. He was serious and he had just been up front to you about not feeling the same about you. You weren’t crying or heart broken but you felt… empty and a little hopeless. You didn’t know if you could even be mad at him. But you liked Kuroo. You thought that he liked you just the same but instead…
You were just the rebound for his relationship that ended that same month. Kuroo wanted the passion and flirting without the commitment… he just never
Specified to not get attached.
“Look, I’m really sorry… really. I’m just not looking for anything serious yet. I just broke up with my partner of three years. You’re a wonderful person. I think you’re cute and funny. I like hanging out with you and I like it when we make out. I wanna keep seeing you.. but I just don’t feel the same as you do.” Kuroo tried to put on his most reassuring and gentle tone. His guilt was tearing away at his soul. You didn’t cry, or even seem remotely mad. The look of defeat and disappointment on your face was making his remorse worsen. Why couldn’t you react more? At least then, he could have chalked it up to your bad attitude. But you didn’t. Kuroo felt his eye twitch when his gaze followed yours.
You stopped looking at him and a thick blanket of silence fell between you two in the booth. You slowly got up from your seat. With a soft voice, you spoke your goodbye.
“Thank you for telling me… I’ll… I’ll talk to you later.”
Kuroo watched you go and he nodded a bit. He tried to give you an apologetic smile and nod but your gaze was past him. Kuroo huffed in frustration at your lack of response but the sounds of your shoes echoed in his head. The bell on the restaurant door rang as it opened. He didn’t have to look back to know that you left.

Tumblr media
The afternoon sunlight filled the small restaurant. A couple was seated at a table by the window. They were excitedly awaiting their names to be called out for their meal. With swift and delicate hands, their meals were prepared. The presentation was perfect, so each ingredient was carefully chosen. Fresh, mouth watering food and made with the customers in mind. It was made for a special occasion. Of course, it had to be perfect.
After inspecting his masterpiece, Osamu called out the names of the couple. He watched with a sense of pride and contentment as the couple both rushed to get their lunch. The couple looked nervous but mumbled thanks before heading back to their table.
For them, it was a moment of anticipation, anxiety, hope and potential dread. For Osamu though? It was just another day of doing what he did best. He stole glances at the jittery couple while he cleared the counter. He wasn’t technically supposed to watch because he was confident in his skills. But there was always something about seeing the reaction after the first bite.
The couple spoke to each other quietly before taking a bite of their own meals. Osamu stopped wiping the counter and leaned against it to see the reactions he’d always expected.
First, A deep breath after the first bite. Second. Both of them were staring wide-eyed at each other. Third, This reaction varied. Some people cried, laughed, smiled and ate in a comforting silence, hell sometimes the reaction was an overwhelming amount of happiness. Fourth. The couple would always thank him over and over again for his help and his food.
This couple was no different from the last. Both were laughing and full of smiles. Osamu smiled at the interaction before going back to work. The amount of happiness his food brought to people was always his favorite part of the experience.
The food he made wasn’t just food. He was blessed with a gift. Believe it or not, people came from far and wide for his aid (and his food). His bloodline went far back. In a way, you could say he was a modern day Cupid. He could cook for anyone and just by a single taste would establish they were meant to be. The food was truly made with each couple in mind. It was unique and no two pairs ever tasted the same. It was a magical experience and great marketing to sell food and catering from proving that a couple were soulmates.
This gift of being a modern day Cupid was exciting for Osamu. It took him time to recognize his gift to bring soulmates together through his food. As a child, he didn’t really care for his gift. Sure, he was the equivalent of a god of love but he didn’t care much to take love or the job seriously. Much to child Atsumu’s dismay since they didn’t get to play with bows and arrows and shoot people with love arrows. However, as the Miya twins grew up into the men they had become, Osamu came to realize that his bow and arrow was his ingredients and his passion for food. What luck was that… He got to do his favorite thing while also maintaining his job as Cupid…
So he commercialized it. That’s why people were dying to get into the establishment with their partners and friends. Everyone had a soulmate and it was Osamu’s job to match them together.
He had always been successful with each customer. He never had a slip up or mess up. He was blessed with helping people discover their soulmates. He was chef Cupid, as Atsumu claimed. His confidence was skyrocketing ever since he found out his ability. That was until one unfortunate night.
There were new couples eagerly awaiting to receive their food. People enjoy their meals with friends and family. Regulars. The night seemed like any other. He finished the last of his orders and began cleaning.
Atsumu was helping for the night with serving. Since Atsumu didn’t have to be with his team for the evening, he decided to help out on such a busy night. Atsumu took the last order to their designated table.
Osamu felt that he had done another job well. He was completely busy and satisfied with another job done well. Until he saw Atsumu frantically run past him to get water. He kept cursing as he ran back out to the tables. Of course, he fucked something up. So much for relying on his twin.
“Sumu? Hey! What’s going on?!” He called out to him before taking off his apron and following behind him.
To his surprise, he heard the sounds of someone coughing and sniffling mixed with Atsumu and a man rambling and panicking.
“I’m so sorry. I really am. I must have mixed up the order when I took it. This Is all my fault. I can comp your meal and we can make you something-“
Osamu’s mouth dropped when he saw the sight of a person who was crying, coughing and fanning their mouth. It got the attention of the other patrons in the restaurant to see if that person was okay. Osamu shook his head and stepped in. He thought Atsumu didn’t touch the food? Did he do it behind his back? No… Atsumu wouldn’t sabotage him. He knew better than to accuse him.
Osamu Miya used his best smile and furrowed his brows. “Excuse me, I’m the chef and owner and I heard a commotion. Is everything okay?” He spoke calmly over the sounds of sobbing and coughing.
The man, presumably the boyfriend, looked up at him and then at his partner. “I don’t think so. My partner, Y/N and I, were trying this place out for the first time for the whole soulmate thing. And my food was amazing but they started coughing and could barely swallow. They said it was inedible..?”
Atsumu and Osamu both stared at the man with wide eyes. The word echoing out.
“Inedible…?”
They both said in sync. Atsumu was quick to look at Osamu. Never had anyone disliked or had anything negative to say about his food. Osamu took a deep breath as he watched you frantically chug water and gasping for air.
Osamu gritted his teeth and smiled regardless. “May I?” He asked as he pointed to the plate. He was insulted and fearful of his first failure? No- he wouldn’t allow that to be the outcome. Atsumu probably fucked it up. It was impossible for his cooking to be bad and not work. He watched you nod before taking your plate and leaving with it.
Atsumu followed behind, he was rambling endless apologies while Osamu went into the kitchen. He decided he’d taste it for himself. He grabbed a spoon and ate a spoonful. To his dismay, the food was perfect. It wasn’t tampered at all. It wasn’t as hot anymore but it was perfect… He thought for a second and pointed to the food. “Taste it.” He demanded.
Atsumu frowned before hesitating to taste what he thought was going to be some disgusting food. After taking a bit and sighing in relief, he realized the problem. It was fine. The situation was looking grimmer and grimmer.
Osamu wasted no time. He took the plate back to the table and he asked the man to try it. The worst thing possible happened, A hand grabbed the man’s wrist. Osamu slowly turned his head to see you. You were struggling to calm down. Whatever you tasted seemed awful.
In a hoarse voice, you spoke. “N-no..! Don’t. It’s really bad…!” You didn’t even try to save his feelings or be polite. Before he could say anything, the other man spoke. He reassured you before taking a bite. The two men glanced at each other before the man turned to you.
His face changed into a blank stare as he realized after tasting the food. It was amazing! But there was no magical experience of feeling that other patrons felt when they found their soulmate… And that only meant one thing.“ We’re not meant to be together, huh..?”
“Vic… I’m so sor-“ You spoke to your boyfriend of six years. You felt so much guilt that this experience hadn’t gone well. But before you could finish. Osamu cleared his throat. Loudly.
Osamu widened his eyes and the pressure was getting to him. Other customers were staring at them. He did everything right? He made the food right and even if food tasted amazing and if the people who ate it weren't romantically involved at that moment, they could still tell that they were soulmates from his food. It still meant that they were soulmates. He couldn’t allow this small fluke to change his 100% success rate. So he cut you off.
“No no, this was just a small mix up. I used the wrong ingredients for your order. I apologize for that. How about you two come back tomorrow and we’ll try again. It’ll be on me.” He smiled as best as he could to be convincing. He watched the couple for a moment in anticipation.
The man took your hand and smiled softly at you. “Alright, we’ll be back. Thank you and sorry for the trouble.” Osamu smiled back in relief.
After the restaurant closed, Osamu checked his recipe book. He still didn’t understand how or why a random stranger didn’t enjoy his food… Atsumu mumbled an apology before leaving the restaurant quickly. Not that he was upset with him anymore. If anything, it was Y/n fault.
Osamu went home to his apartment. He picked up dinner on the way from some lazy fast food place. He couldn’t admit it to himself but he was disappointed with his performance. The way you reacted to his cooking was burned into his mind, so much so that he didn’t even want to cook for himself. A ragged sigh escaped his lips and he set the bag of food on the kitchen table. He took off his work hat and ran his hands through his hair in a messy way.
Ironically, Osamu lived alone. Despite being the modern day Cupid, he had no one to call his own soulmate. But even in the Greek version of Cupid, Cupid had a lover. But not Osamu. Not that it bothered him, he was dedicated to his craft. Plus, he was in his late twenties, he had time to figure something out… Osamu sat down at his dining room table and got lost in thought over the actions of the evening. He ate in silence in his lonely apartment.
Maybe you were faking it or a liar? You wanted to give a bad review to harp on his success? Probably not. But everyone else liked the food. So why didn’t you? He put his heart and soul into it. He was literally Cupid and he wasn’t going to let an ordinary person ruin his success. And his talents being inedible to you? He was definitely taking it personally. He planned to not give up because the next day would be easier. The interaction and your words kept replaying in his mind. The whole fiasco and you plagued his mind all night. He had never been so determined to start a job the next day.
