Hmm so turns out I have a lot of feelings about intellectual property and corporate ownership.
The live action reviews are messy because they’ve made assumptions about what is canon. I’ve been through reboots before so I’m used to Eras of Canon (like the Star Wars extended universe or Trek timelines)…
Garrett Sander is the creator of Monster High but he didn’t get to decide what was canon at the time due to corporate and now he’s not employed by Mattel and has no say over the characters in G3.
Put simply, Clawdeen isn’t a lesbian in G1 canon because corporate never allowed it and G3 canon will be whatever Mattel decides even if it goes against a character design basic by Sanders because he didn’t truly own any intellectual property created during company employment and has now been shut out of it (probably with no royalties whatsoever).
I’ve long felt this type of IP ownership is disgusting. Carter Bryant was struggling to pay hospital bills while his creation: Bratz, not revamped, the literal original designs, are selling like hotcakes because he doesn’t technically own his work.
And while the monster high tag fights over whether Cleo/Deuce or meangirl!Torelei is “canon”, I’m just getting more and more annoyed that “canon” was never Sander’s to decide and isn’t going to pay his bills. He’s not even being sent the repros of his original designs. Mattel can do whatever they want with the Monster High characters and worse they can milk it without the creator getting a dime.
So that’s my contribution to the discourse: Please look beyond the characters at how the sausage is made.
If fans decide to campaign for anything from Mattel, please can it be to allow their artists royalties on their work.

"Oh, we walked together, and talked together, and just before we say goodbye, he takes me in his arms, and then... I wake up."
Because there's no Princess Aurora, without Briar Rose! 🌹
She was another kind of challenge, but a challenge nonetheless 👀 This time I wanted to stray from the usual sweet expression, and went more with a "bratty" one 😁
Problem is, when trying to achieve it, it's so easy to actually step into "evil smile" territory 🤣
This repaint was actually my second attempt, after the first one I decided to take a day or two to really study her mold, and finally get what wasn't working...In the end, I went the hard way, and partially resculpted her face, while afraid to ruin a LE head, I knew I wouldn't have been satisfied otherwise, go big or go home basically 😅
For the dress, I've mostly kept the original concept in mind, with the same colors I remember from the VHS (the palette of the outfit on the restored version is too gray for my taste, give me the cream, the turtle dove, the beige, the maroon!!), saving the tiny spinning wheel embroidery on the corset...it seems like this doll has been one big experiment from start to finish 👀
In the end, I love how she turned out, and most of all I'm glad I didn't give up on the expression, I really hate to take the easy way, I know it would have frustrated me too much to leave untouched 😵‍💫
Better make that kind of decision at the start of the process than at the end 🫠
🌹

I want to start a thread of doll customization stuff that sounds metal af out of context, like
"If you boil the head, it'll become soft enough to remove the eyes"
"People are ripping off the dead Queen of England's head to steal her body"
"If her sleeves are too tight, pull her hands off first"
Please add more, I want to collect as many as possible

To make the titular extra mouth of the Futakuchi-Onna, I cut out the back of the doll's head and formed a platform out of milliput to act as the tongue, using the rest to form the lips. The teeth were made separately out of translucent Fimo clay to give them a tooth-like translucence. The wires were added in before the mouth to eventually be the bases of strands of prehensile hair that will be holding food.
Though a bit ad hoc, the mouth turned out really well and looked even better when painted fully.

a small stone troll. this prototype is printed with a fairly rough setting, but i think the printing texture being so visible adds some character in this case. regardless, sale versions of The Boi will be smoother.
this is a collaboration with my partner; they did a sketch for the kind of body type they wanted, and i embellished it into a rock creature. the background skull is an older piece i made, to memorialize a retired tabletop rp character or theirs.

Adding a very small few details to the witch, because I was really happy with the hairswap but it made them look a bit washed out--
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I ended up adding some brows, adding and darkening some freckles, painting the nose shade to match the brow, and adding some orange eyeshadow and subtle lashes as well. Then to complete the look, I did brown on the top lip and orange on the bottom for slight depth.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'm much happier with the look, I think it turned out well and gave a bit more of a forward personality.
What do you think?

let's talk about benzoyl peroxide/acne cream on dolls
many people have used benzoyl peroxide on dolls with no side effects, and this is due to the dolls being colored with metal oxide pigments, typically dolls that have this colorant are natural human skintones.
HOWEVER, some dolls have dyed plastic, and that's where things get nasty with benzoyl peroxide: it causes white splotches that will show up years after its been used. additionally, this effect can spread via touch.
Tumblr media
dolls with dyed plastic are typically non human skintone dolls like monster high or my little pony toys.
if you were to use this product on a doll, ensure its been time tested (over 10 yrs). it can take years to appear at all, and once used its irreversible. I have not found a guaranteed way to get rid of the effect during all of my research on g1 MLPs, the toy badly affected by it the most.
as a pony collector I don't ever buy from shops that have used this product, due to the spreading effect.

I treated myself to a pair of blind boxes because I've been good;;
The little painters and little witches are very cute. Today, I got these two--
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
They came with an extra set of hands, each. The painter's body is very cute and nicely strung, with shorter shins and solid thighs. Unlike the witch, who has a slight more petite set, swivel thighs, and longer leg shapes. But the witch is also strung a bit tighter, and has just slightly too much tension. The limbs kinda snap into certain positions. The painter is perfect though.
Excuse the different lighting, I took the darker photos this evening.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is how they look! And they're super cute as is. But, because I can't help myself, I mixed and matched them around a bit.
I swapped their hair and socks, but I really like the look of a fox boy and a pale witch.

I've had an incredibly productive sewing week and this dress was part of the reason. It's a wonderfully quick make (an afternoon in my case) with a very cute, rewarding result.
The dress needs 2 measurements, overbust and around the shoulders, and 2 skills: straight seams and ruffling.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the pic the fabric is laid out double.
After taking the measurements it's mainly a matter of multiplying by the desired ruffle volume. I inserted elastic at the waist and around the shoulders to make it slip-on, any closure in the back would work as well.
Look at my sweetheart:

Proper doll care
So sadly I've seen doll collectors post pictures of their dolls and the shocking amount of doll mistreatment on this site is astronomical. You should know what you're getting into when you decide to adopt a doll but it seems people have completely forgotten their husbandry. Not to worry, I'm here to set the record straight. So hopefully y'all can stop mistreating your dolls.
Enclosure - Dolls don't require a lot of space we all know that but that doesn't mean space isn't a plus. Dolls like imagining they're walking around empty space around them, not providing them with an opportunity to imagine this can be detrimental to their health.
Enrichment - Now I'm not naming any names but I've seen some of you just leaving your dolls standing around thinking that's enough. Well guess what? Surviving is not thriving. Dolls should have at least one enriching accessory PER DOLL. Dolls are surprisingly territorial, don't make them share accessories just because you wanted to cheap out.
Socialization - On the topic of owning multiple dolls. Most people just throw their new dolls on the shelf and don't think much about it. This is quite rude as even though dolls are known to be friendly creatures that get along with their own kind. They should be given a chance to introduce themselves like they do in the wild. This isn't even difficult just let your current dolls stare face to face at your new doll for around a minute. Caution! If your new doll falls over, that means they weren't accepted by your other dolls. You should give them a separate enclosure and bring them to meet the others in a controlled environment once a day until there are no more signs of skirmish.
Socializing with your dolls - As previously mentioned, dolls are quite social creatures. Even though the need for socialization can be curbed by buying multiple dolls, human interaction is crucial. Dolls see us as dolls, just a different breed. So if you ignore your doll, they can feel like they're rejected by their own packmate which can be taxing on their mental wellbeing.
These are most of the caveats that new doll owners ignore these days. I hope this helped and I hope some of y'all will stop mistreating your dolls, again not naming names but y'all know who you are. :)

I HAVE ACQUIRED A NEW HOSTAGE
Tumblr media
Look at her just vibing away, head empty. Spa day.
Tumblr media
I believe this is 'Busy BB'. Her hair is a hecking rat's nest but boy howdy, she's got a lot of it. She only had her denim jumpsuit left and it needs a little bit of TLC and I have to reattach the key chain accessory.
I had fun with the last LOL OMG so I've slowly accumulated some more in various pre-loved conditions-- Going full red for this one.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I enjoy cute funky eyebrows, I just think they look neat;;
Kinda had a very rough sketch on my phone to feel out the vibes:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Gave a little bit of painted shading on the lips for volume, and a touch of pink on the outer lid. Just a hint so it's not flat. The creases have some brown under them for a little more pronounced shadow, but I really just want it to feel very cartoony.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Doing a brown lash instead of black because it's slightly softer and I think it blends better, and changed her eyes to green last minute. Added the freckley cheeks and some to her hands.
Tumblr media
Going to add some gloss for shine and put some lashes on her shortly.
