I'm goinf to explain my point of view. I'm going to explain why I think Severus acted this way.
Okay so he was a pure blood but had no affection from his family. Then he meet a muggle born named Lily, who is quite nice to him, even if he doesn't understand everything from her muggle culture.
Then he goes to Hogwarts with her and they are friend. But he is a slytherin and is being persecuted for this. And as it goes on, Lily is bullied too. Him because he is in Slytherin and her because she is a muggle born.
And as it keeps going on, their bullies are being worse with him. Even Remus who is a prefect doesn't even TRY to ask his friend to be just a LITTLE LESS mean.
Aaand when Lily tries to help ? He insults her (wich is not right at all, it is not because you were bullied that you should be mean).
Why is he doing it though ? Well because as a slytherin, the other houses are rejecting him, and because he likes Lily, Slytherins reject him too. He is litteraly the loneliest person in the world at this moment. He's just been humiliated in front of the entire school, he feels horrible and he insults her (again, it's BAD).
And well, of course it's not okay to be insulted, but still, Lily choose to be mad at him for the rest of her life and she leave him even more alone. And for who ? A little shit that bullied him (and her). I'll feel quite bad at his place.
But let's continue. Times pass, things are happening, and oh he's professor and this year there is Harry Potter (the child of the love of his life with the little shit that bullied them) annnnd there is this girl looking kinda like Lily and who is.... friend with the kid of Lily that looks like his father.
So I think what happened at this time is that he feels the need to take his revenge on James Potter on bullying his son, and on Lily for leaving him.
Once again I give him no excuses, just explanations.
While the Harry Potter novel series had a lot of sad moments, the only moment that actually made me cry was in The Goblet of Fire, when Hermione Granger was hit by the hex cast by Malfoy and intended for Harry, which made her front teeth grow at an alarming rate. While Snape allowed Goyle, who was hit by Harry with a hex intended for Malfoy, to go to the nurse, Snape said, “I see no difference” to Hermione. Hermione left the room crying, I was in my room crying, and it was a mess.
