And the fact is, Rhys and the Inner Court act like there's no other way to maintain their standing as the most powerful people in Prythian without the mask upheld by the CoN and Illyria, as if the entire Court can't exist in peace with Rhys still maintaining the power he holds, but it's straight up disproven in the text by the Spring Court. The entire SC was, as far as we know, a relatively peaceful court. There wasn't a distinction between lesser faeries and high fae (unlike the distinction between the citizens of the CoN--which in itself probably enforces some pretty strict race division if it isn't entirely High Fae--and the Illyrians), it was an open place of refuge for faeries in need, and it was economically and socially self sufficient without need for political games. Like Rhys has to play to maintain Illyria and the CoN while still letting them be the Big Bad he needs them to be in order to...idk frighten the rest of Prythian into letting him do whatever he wants?
Rhys continued the manipulation of the Night Court that was passed down through generations to make it seem like it was worse than it was, but is it? For the citizens of the CoN and Illyria, probably not. It is as bad as it seems for them because that is the purpose they serve. "The Court of Nightmares runs itself" but does it have to?? "The Illyrians aren't used to change, it will take a while" DOES IT HAVE TO??? Sorry I can't speak more on this without genuinely having a conniption. But like 100% yes to everything op said.
The NC is literally a dystopian hellscape.
The Capital, or Velaris, is the safe zone from where they watch the suffering of others (the CON and Illyrians). They srpead propaganda to hide the hellscape that they've turned the NC into, painting themselves as paragons for good, and like siding with them is the best and only option. The IC themselves are a form of walking propaganda, calling themselves "The Court of Dreams" and gas slighting the citizens of Velaris and other courts into thinking that they're in the right and are just misunderstood good guys all along.
They use the CON and Illyria as forms of propaganda, showing it off to others, and painting a tail of them doing their best, but that these places are just too far gone or stubborn or whatever, to paint themselves as the ones struggling as they try to offer them help.
They use force as a way to control the populous, instead of starting with negotiations, or enforcing laws. Instead, they put down rebellions and slaughter their own people, while leaving the females to suffer, and orphans to starve.
They use force in the Hewn city too, though at the wrong times. He used force to control them when Kier called Feyre names, but not when they needed to get control of the Darkbringers? Once instance seems a lot more important than the others.
They control the spread of information, even from their own "family" when they feel like it, as seen in ACOSF. When information leaks from the NC, rhys (or another nc damati), wipes their memories of it. This is seen in ACOWAR after Eris and his brothers found out about Feyre's powers, while his brothers had their memories wiped, he uses it as leverage.
There's also the fact that most people consider Illyrians uncivilised brutes and the denizens of the CON to be unpleasant at best, monsters at worst. People from outside the NC or from velaris, don't really have any way of knowing if it's true first hand. They have the accounts of the IC, but that's it. They just take their word for it. It's not like Feyre or anyone ever see any of the CON outside of that court, that's basically an elaborate masquerade for the sake of survival.
They deny free thought, since we all saw what happened to Nesta the moment she dared to disobey, have individual autonomy, free thought, and healthy boundaries. She was pretty much tortured, and denied information regarding her own body. Even in the HL meeting, anybody with an opposing view, like Tamlin, was quickly shut up, dismissed and/or kicked out.
There's also the fact that it's unlikely anyone from Velaris has ever left it. It's hidden, cut off from the rest of the world, and it's not like we're told of any other safe places in the NC. It's either Velaris, this perfect city, the hellscape that is the CON (supposedly), or the frozen wastelands of Illyria. On top of that, if they stay, they remain the IC's priority, since he did only act to protect Velaris during Amerantha's reign, and not any other location. Has anyone ever left, without getting their memories wiped? Are their methods of transportation for people to leave Velaris, or come to it, if that's what they wish? Unlikely.
The IC don't let anyone see any good in any part of the NC, aside from Velaris. They convince their citizens that they are the only good thing in the NC, putting them on a pedestal above the rest of the territory. Velaris is protrayed as this Utopia, with the rest of the NC being portrayed as the kind of places they tell kids about to make them behave.

I'm a tamsand stan through and through and I am still so shocked that Azris, which is built on like. 2 interactions total is more popular, but I gotta say Azris does come with this great opportunity of Azriel asking "What if the cauldron was wrong?" Not about Elain, but out of desperation that his mate can't be the male that he's been (kind of conditioned to tbh) hating for the past 500 years.
Like that fucks. His dialogue and motivations are so easily warped to like have a double meaning it's amazing. They are certainly a close second for my fav acotar ships. This fandom needs more queer pairings anyways. (And I think that even though Azris will never be canon, Sarah J is definitely gonna make Eris gay. I could be wrong but I can feel it in my bones)

I wonder what it's like to be the heir to a tryant High Lord.
A child to a horrible parent.
To grow up by their side, knowing as a kid what they're doing isn't right, but not knowing what's wrong.
To never be good enough, strong enough, powerful enough, brave enough, to never be right just existing .
No son of theirs would play an instrument made for people lesser than them, he should know he is above that.
No son of theirs would fly over their court using the wings he was born with, wings that showed his lesser heritage, he should know it isn't right to.
No son of theirs would grow to be kind in a court that wasn't made to be kind, he's the eldest of 7, he should know better than that.
No son of theirs would never just be a son, a child.
Forced into their position, no court would accept a half breed as High Lord, not unless he forced them, not if he wore a mask of his father, turning into him without even realising it with every passing day till he forgot who he was and became his father. Forgotten was the boy who liked to fly outside at night, the one who befriended others way below him as his father would say, gone was the boy who gave bastards a chance at friendship.
What would the court think if they knew their High Lord never even wanted to be one? He had to keep up his appearance, sit on a throne and demand a family with no home to give him something every two years. He hadn't learn anything on how to be a High Lord, he'd never wanted to be, content on being in a warband writing poetry, playing his fiddle for his friends to enjoy, friends his father would not consider good enough. Gone was the boy who felt joy at the simplest of things, not a little boy but still not a right man, even after knowing what he shouldn't do, ended up doing most of it while wanting to be different.
Then there is the heir who wears his own mask of indifference, he knows what his father does is wrong, and his act is to protect himself the best he could from the father who tortures his sons, the husband who beats his wife. Ordering his younger brothers like they are his hounds, losing his relationship with his favorite one because "Half" comes before brother. All he can do is hope he doesn't end up like his father.
But when does a mask turn into who you are? Who you were lost in the ruins of what was meant to be your childhood.
A victim in their story, a villain to whoever sees from the outside.
I wonder what it it's like to be the heir of a tryant High Lord, because from outside, it just looks like a High Lord who will never be good enough.
Because for me, that box is already crossed, to never be good enough, a child to a horrible parent, I can feel myself slipping behind my own mask.
A phrase that shouldn't be an insult is already coined as one.
"You act like your father"

I don't hate Rhys. I criticize him a lot, but I think his flaws are actually part of what makes him a compelling character, even if he frustrates me almost constantly and sometimes makes me downright angry.
However. I will not even be able to BEGIN. To describe my rage. If he becomes High King.
He literally does not even run his own Court in its entirety.

I've seen so much discourse about who Elain is gonna end up with and elriel shippers being like she's not even attracted to Lucien!!! and elucien shippers being like she's repressing her true feelings for him!!! though I don't have a particularly strong stance on the ship war overall (I do have my opinions but they're not the point of this post), it did get me thinking like...why IS Elain so attracted to Azriel?
Because to me, it looks like Lucien is everything she would've dreamed of as a human. A gentlemanly courtier, very connected with nature, obviously attractive (I mean come on even Cassian thinks he's hot), thoughtful, courageous, loyal, social, a High Lord's son. Not to say that Azriel doesn't share some of these qualities, but like Lucien is practically the blueprint for who Elain would have been interested in. It makes sense that they're mates.
But she's not willing to even acknowledge him, nevermind pursue a romantic relationship with him. But she is willing to do so with Azriel. Rugged, mysterious, quiet, headstrong, dangerous Azriel.
Lucien has tried to bring her comfort just as much as Azriel, but she won't give him the time of day.
My theory is, maybe he reminds her of what she could have had. Of what she lost. A Lord's son, someone she thought would love her unconditionally, someone used to the galas and the politics and the high society life. Graysen may have been different from Lucien personality-wise, but maybe deep down, she's afraid that if she grows close with someone who has similar social and political standing as him, the same thing will happen again. Maybe it's easier to be attracted to someone who's so different from what she'd originally wanted than it is to go through the same thing she went through before, which ended up in heartbreak.
I'm not saying she ONLY cares for Azriel because of these reasons. But I think it could be an explanation as to why she's so adamant about not wanting to even get to know Lucien, when really he's an assemblage of all the qualities she would have previously looked for in a romantic partner.

Omg I've never even thought about this way. "when Tamlin finally got her alone he just wanted to mess around" is a big argument against him overall, even made by Feyre later on in the series.
But maybe that was the only time she had bodily autonomy of any kind UTM. that was the only time SHE could be the one to initiate something sexual and romantic, and the only time SHE was in control of how she was being touched, and yeah, maybe it was bad timing, but maybe it's what she needed in the moment to feel loved and taken care of. Not because of the sexual gratification she could get from it, but from the very fact that it was her choice. and in the moment, she wanted to kiss and touch and feel the man she loved who had barely shown a scrap of emotion since she was thrown into this hellscape. It wasnt about him. It wasn't just him seeking some kind of means to an end of his sexual desire. It was about them, together, finally being able to make choices of their own.
Or at least, that could be a new way to look at it.
Something that guts me.
Is that the One and Only time consent occurs during Feyre's imprisonment UTM, was when the opportunity occurred for her and Tamlin to meet in a secluded place.
Yet, this scene is tragically interrupted by Rhysand and disolves into a scene where Feyre is subjected to non-concensual kissing.
"His tongue pried my mouth open. Forcing himself into me...I pushed, thrashed, but he held firm."
