“Hey, stop crying. I’ll take care of you, Stevie. Always.”
Even when I had nothing, I had Bucky. I don’t think I could’ve done it without him.

So when they were younger, Steve and Bucky definitely spooned, with Steve as the little spoon. They did not change this habit once Steve became buff. I will not be taking constructive criticism on this.

I love all the fics about Steve dealing with the misconceptions people have about him, but I don't think I've read one yet focused on the fact that Steve wouldn't really know.
Like, if everyone assumes this is just who he is, they wouldn't tell him. Why would they explain his own personality to him?
Sure, he could piece together the public imagine of Captain America, from the comics and the propaganda and everything, but maybe he wouldn't really connect that to himself. Because sure, Steve Rogers is Captain America, but Captain America is not Steve Rogers.
Captain America didn't exist before 1943 and Steve Rogers had already gone through a lot by that time.
Captain America was not the guy who hated hospitals because he spent too much time in them. He was not the guy who got into fights he could never win. He was not the immigrant raised by a single mother. He was not even a person, not really.
For Steve and all of the friends he had, that distinction was very clear, and so maybe he wouldn't realize how non-existent it is for everyone now.
Not until he does something so "out of character" that someone finally feels the need to point it out to him.
It's probably over something dumb. Like one early morning in the tower when Steve thinks he's finally figured out Tony's stupidly complicated coffee machine and confidently takes a sip, only to realize that Oh no, this tastes more like poison than coffee.
He swear up a storm spitting it out and pouring it into the sink and Tony looks at him like he grew a second head. "Oh my god, my coffee machine just broke Captain America."
"Captain America is unbreakable. But Steve Rogers might break this fucking thing."
"How do you even know half these words?"
And that's how Steve Rogers finds out what everyone - and by everyone we mean the whole fucking world - thinks about him. And that's how Tony Stark unleashes hell on America, because Steve sets out on a path to correct these misconceptions.
It's really only 12% his fault.

When Bucky goes on a date it FATWS, he mentions to her (Leah, I believe?) that he was on a dating app and saw “pictures of tigers”, which is a joke about men on dating apps, implying that he was looking for men, and is in fact bisexual. In this essay I will—

What do we think Steve Rogers love language is?
Because Bucky’s is obviously physical touch, but Steve, I have no idea.

Can we talk about Chris' understanding of Steve and how much Steve being selfish means in CACW?
in an interview, Chris says Steve won't think things like 'ah another day to save the world' because that kind of thought is 'self-involved' and it 'requires a certain type of egotistical approach to his own awareness.' He also says Steve thinks the way he does partly because that's just who he is and also to keep his 'sanity.'
I don't always agree with Chris' interpretation of Steve but his acting choice is informed by his version of Steve and in this regard, considering how much Chris emphasized the selfishness of Steve's actions in CACW, it's a huge fucking deal.
By Chris' words, Steve's thoughts don't start with 'I'. It's not 'I'm going to do XXX' or 'I have this responsibility', certainly not 'I feel like doing YYY.' They start with objectives: 'Coffee. Gym. Beat bad guys.' To some extend I think it's almost mechanical. (no wonder he's never happy)
But in CACW Steve's actions can be summed up by 'he chooses Bucky.' It's not 'save Bucky', it's not 'for the greater good', it's just Bucky (Chris famously said that Steve was fighting for Bucky not the Accords). It's a choice made out of emotions, it's personal.
So when Chris said Steve was selfish in CACW I don't think he meant that Steve was being, well, selfish, but rather he was for the first time acting out of personal desires. (still not true but you do you Chris)
Perhaps Chris thought Steve went to Azzano to save Bucky and the rest of the soldiers and crushed the plane for the greater good and burned SHIELDRA to the ground purely because that was the right thing to do, but even with all that, Steve in CACW just stopped giving a fuck about anything else. The world can burn I just want my Bucky back.
It's also interesting that Chris said Steve thought and acted that way for his sanity. This connects to the idea that Steve is just a giant black hole of repressed feelings and emotions, he knows that if he isn't careful those feelings - his dark side - will come out and cause serious damage as it did in CACW. Again, by Chris' interpretation, Steve making a personal choice is a huge fucking deal: Steve was losing control of his rationality and the cause? Bucky.
Is it a coincidence that Steve's dark side, his feelings and emotions are always connected to Bucky? Stucky was in the fucking narrative.

Steve’s been in a funk ever since Bucky turned himself in. Sam, being the good friend he is, tries to cheer him up.
(Let him win every now and then, Cap!)

Always funny when Stucky is in a ship tournament and everyone in the tags is telling people to vote for the other thing because we all hate the MCU now. I can assure you that Stucky shippers also hate the fucking MCU more than you can imagine

So I know the event is @catws-anniversary but this is actually one of my favourite Steve-Bucky scenes.
There's been a lot spoken about their seamless teamwork here -- Steve doesn't even look in Bucky's direction when he tosses the shield at Bucky -- but there is just...so much packed into this fluid cooperation?
Bucky as far as we know in CATFA was a sniper (although in the supporting material it does say Bucky learned boxing before he joined the army). It's only when we get to CATWS we see him being a strong melee fighter. A lot of Bucky's new fighting style takes into account his metal arm -- he favours it for blocking and forceful striking to spare his flesh arm. He's also spent most of his recent decades doing mostly solo work. He had backup support during CATWS to get him into position, but actually on task? He's by himself chasing down his targets.
This is the first time Bucky fights on Steve's side after his time as the Winter Soldier. Depending on how you headcanon Bucky receiving his serum, this would also be the first time Steve treats Bucky as an equally strong super soldier. Bucky's experience, fighting style, physical constitution have all significantly changed since the last time they were on the field together, not to mention Steve's own style and experience have evolved.
Yet they slotted straight back into each other's space, like they had never spent a minute apart in the last 70 years. Apart from the "end of the line" spell-break, nothing else speaks such volumes about their bond.
(Also goddamn CEvans with that beautiful pirouette. No wonder the stuntspeople say they can't replicate his footwork)

When Bucky hugged Steve for the first time since he got the serum, they were alone in a tent. They had just got back to the base camp after their miles long walk back from the hydra base and they were both exhausted.
Steve is situating himself around the very nice, fancy tent that he insisted on sharing and Bucky hasn't taken his eyes off him since he saw him from the table he was strapped onto. Steve. Little Steve. Steve who got sick every winter and who's asthma played up every summer. Steve who had been 5'4 and had remained as such since he was 14. Steve who got into too many fights and never won but not once for lack of passion.
Bucky has to say something, because he hasn't been saying anything since escaping the base and now he feels like he's about to boil over. "Steve"
The same big blue eyes he's always known greeted him and were quick to lace with concern. "You okay, Buck?"
And generally speaking no, Bucky was not okay, he'd been experimented on, he'd been taken by the enemy and strapped down to a goddamn table and he couldn't even remember half of what they did to him there.
For all Bucky knows he could drop dead at any moment but he isn't thinking about that, because he's thinking about how Steve is here, in front of him, all 6'2 of him. He's thinking about how the breath exiting his mouth doesn't follow with wheezing, or how he can take the full rib expanding breaths when he needs it without coughing until there are tears forcing themselves out of his eyes.
Bucky steps forward, his hand gently presses against the expanse of Steve's chest. He stops himself from gawking considering the fact you could park an eighteen wheeler on this thing, he even opens his mouth to say just that but then he feels Steve's heart beat, steady and pumping under his palm.
It's only slight considering the amount of muscle and thick bone in the way but he can feel it all the same and it's not stuttering and irregular. It's pumping blood, lots of blood wherever Steve needs it, constantly and in all the right places instead of spending most of its time in the lowest point of the body.
If Steve were to get sick this heart would help him get better instead of having to fight to keep itself working, and his new lungs might get congested but they wouldn't spasm every time he needed a breath of fresh air. Steve won't be laying in bed all winter sick and out of his mind with any and every illness that has always loved making his life a living hell.
Steve is healthy.
And suddenly feeling overwhelmed, Bucky clears his throat and blinks away any escaped liquid from his eyes, which are very pointedly looking towards his hand. Because if he looks up at Steve and sees those blue eyes all concerned, seeing right through him like they always do, he really will loose it.
"You're okay.." He mumbles mostly to himself.
It comes off as a statement more than anything and a chocked out one at that but Steve knows, because he always knows what Bucky is trying to get at. He places his hand over Bucky's wrist and just holds him, his hand is steady and must be magical because Bucky grows calm at the touch.
"I'm okay."
Feeling himself falter at the affirmation, he leans in, arms wrapping around the waist he could once circle completely with one arm. But he almost backs out as quickly as he started it, the foreign body giving the wrong signals, like hugging a coworker or a distant relative you see once a decade.
But taking a deep breath to centre himself, Steve smelled like he always did, plus the scent of cheap soap hardly lingering, faded from the long day they both just had.
And when he ran his hands over his back he could feel the familiar humps of his spine and count them all the same. Even Steve's hands find the same spot on Bucky's back as they always used to, where his ribs end and his back start to dip in at the start of his waist.
Bucky can still reach the hair at the base of Steve's head and run his fingers through it like he used to see Steve's ma do when they were young.
Now Steve sighs into the hug and Bucky squeezes tighter since he knows he won't be doing any damage. They stay like that for a long time in their own personal world, the centre of their own solar system, everything else moving around them, floating within their orbit.
When they pull back, Bucky's hands linger on Steve's waist for longer then they should and when he looks up Steve's eyes are so full of admiration but his nose and eyebrows are scrunched up like he's got something to say.
Bucky takes his hands back to his sides. "what?"
"We aren't going to leave each other again, okay?" He says it so sure, like they aren't going to be in the heat of battle every other day but Bucky wants it just as bad as he does so he nods and smiles.
"You're stuck with me pal, I'm not going anywhere"
