Daniel Alexander Harris Warpaint

Never released portrait of Warpaint.
The story of this image is that I had been sent along to photograph a 100th edition cover of The Skinny Mag with the band in Glasgow. I got to the venue around 6.30pm and half the band's equipment hadn't arrived from L.A when they landed in Glasgow for the start of their U.K and European tour. They were all freaking out, pretty upset and sent out their tour manager to phone up and re-open three music shops in town so that the band could repurchase their pedals that help them achieve some of their unique guitar, bass and vocal sounds. Once they had got back with the majority of what they needed, re-programmed and finished sound check, i was left with five minutes to shoot the cover. This is an out-take that I never released. The space was pretty grim and I chose to photograph the girls individually in the middle of the audience space with the house lights down. This meant that they were more chilled as they could rush off one by one to get ready. Shooting with this composition in mind.. i put this shot together in post and treated the blacks with a reddish grade which I really like and feel suits the band.

Bands To See in 2015

Daniel Alexander Harris Bands To See in 2015
All photography (c) Daniel Alexander Harris
2014 was an incredible year of shows. I was very lucky to photograph 93 individual shows and three festivals. Instead of doing my favourite shots of 2014, i thought it'd be more interesting to put a story to each of my favourite live acts and say why I think you should be grabbing your Christmas money to see them this year.
Here's a mini playlist for you to hear them!
http://open.spotify.com/user/danni18h/playlist/4TxieiHZe0eNDqc0LVcXKc
1. Wolf Alice
Oh man oh man. This band is playing O2 Shepherd's Bush Empire before they've even dropped the first album. I photographed the four-piece twice in 2014 and I cannot wait to see them play again. Their EPs thus far have been massive and the live set is even bigger. One of the most exciting bands to photograph and see live.
2. Twin Peaks
Twin Peaks made my inner grandad jump willingly into the mosh pit. The energy of their live shows is enough to make a kettle boil and the album live makes me want to dance in a headstand.
3. Augustines
Oh man. I didn't know if I was that big a fan of indie rock until I saw these guys play at Green Man. I booked to photograph their Roundhouse show the next week as their sound and story combine to form the most emotionally draining thing you'll experience before the next time you watch Atonement or a Downton Christmas Special. Their shows mean so much to them and Billy the frontman leaves every sweat and tear on stage.
4. The War on Drugs
Album of the year from every magazine this side of saturn is probably enough for you to want to see these guys live. Their set at Green Man was my favourite of the weekend and I am itching to get to their next run of shows.
5. Ben Howard
I photographed three Ben Howard shows in 2014. He was always a top live act and now, with the new album, the set is beyond mesmerising.
6. Jack Garratt
Shit. I have to quit playing guitar, piano and singing now. This guy does all three at the same time.. AND plays synth and drums on top of that in a mind-meld of the impossible. Sweet Jesus Bread & Butter Pudding you have to see this man play in 2015.
7. Future Islands
I photographed Future Islands twice in 2015 and Samuel T Herring makes me fear my life as a photographer. He practically broke my lens hood when he ran into me at Shepherd's Bush. The set is massive and the energy of the front-man is enough to climb everest several times a minute. You want to be close to the front for this gig.
8. Alex Vargas
Sweet jeezeballs- If you ever want to give up being a musician.. watch this man with a guitar. His live set is just bursting with wicked songwriting with his main man Tom Sheen. One of the best live acts of the year without a doubt.
9. James Bay
Two words to keep an eye out for in 2015 are James Bay. He will no doubt be everywhere following the drop of his album. No matter how big the album is, the live show is better..His O2 Shepherd's Bush show will be fantastic.
10. Bombay Bicycle Club
I was lucky to photograph these guys 3 times in 2014. Their live show and production has got bigger and bigger and the first and third albums are absolutely incredible live. Now with backing from Liz Lawrence and a three piece brass section, the live set up feels fuller and the visual art is fantastic.
11. MØ
OH brother. I photographed MØ twice in 2014 and both shows made me feel like i'd taken illegal pills and ran a marathon. One of the most exciting things you will see live.
12. Rae Morris
I photographed 4 of Rae's shows in 2014 and they got bigger and bigger till not even the Shepherd's Bush Empire could contain her sound. Each song on the EP's thus far are brilliant and I feel like the album releasing later in the year will be hit after hit. Her voice is like nothing i've heard before and even on her most stripped back set at the Notting Hill Arts Club, she blew everyone away.
13. The Staves
You've read about the Sirens in mythology. If the Gods of Mt Olympus had to replace the Sirens, it would be these Staveley sisters luring Oedipus into the cliffs. Stunning, swelling harmonies that make your inner man weep like a 2 month old babe.
14. Fat White Family
I'm going to square up here - I don't like Fat White Family's recorded material BUT their live sets are absolutely mad. By the time you've hit the second song, the lead singer Lias is already half-naked and in the crowd..the atmosphere is electric and you'll feel like you're at a sweaty squat gig with dishwasher's smashed on the floor and people hanging from the ceiling.
15. The Mispers
Oh man. I am glad I brought a change of shirt to The Mispers show as everyone was dancing their bodies supply of 60% water to the skylights above. At a Mispers show the floor will move, the room will look like a sauna and its very likely Jack the lead singer will give you a sweaty cuddle mid the height of the set. See this band.
16. The 1975
I photographed these guys in NYC and, once you've battled through the adoring 17 year old crowd and can hear again, the sound is huge. The reason these guys have been on the road for two years is because their live shows are phenomenal. When the second album drops in late 2015/2016 I have a feeling these guys will be touring for the next decade off it.
17. Nick Mulvey
Sometimes I just stare into space when I watch Señor Mulvey play as I realise that I will never be able to play a guitar a 1/100th as brilliantly as this man. I photographed Nick's show five times in 2014 between supports, festivals and headlines and this man has something on offer that I feel no other acts has got this year - You 100% lose yourself in trance during his live set. Compelling and absolutely intoxicating live.
18. Rhodes
I'm going to keep this one short and sweet - I've never heard a man and guitar make the incredible sound Rhodes delivers gig after gig. You'll be standing there, eyes wide absolutely melting for 45 minutes.
Those are my top 18 live acts for you to see in 2015! I hope you enjoyed the post!
Happy New Year one and all!

Daniel Alexander Harris Annapurna 1
In July 2014, and after a year of planning, I headed off on the craziest trip of my life. As a person with crohn's disease, there are a few places you shouldn't go and places that are absolutely risking your shit to go to. So why in the hell did I go and climb up to Annapurna 1 base-camp?
Friends, adventure, dreams and getting on with it. I have been obsessed with Nepal for some time. The culture and the mountains are magical and I was lucky enough to get out there.. the consequences of having Crohn's that month were minimal when compared to the take out of being in this wondrous place forging friendships with some of the most intoxicatingly interesting people i'd yet to meet. This picture above stands for a lot of things. Simply put - it is a photograph of Annapurna I. Beyond that, it is a visualisation of me fighting against my body to get somewhere well beyond anywhere I thought i could reach. It was a culmination of a couple of years of dreaming about it and a realisation that that was SO MUCH HARDER THAN YOU BASTARDS MADE IT OUT TO BE IN THE BROCHURE. There was plenty of man-crying, pushing yourself to the limit, day on day.
Annapurna I is the world's most deadly mountain. It is the most respected peak there is, with the top mountaineers taking several attempts to get close to summiting. Statistically, one in three won't make it down. We were climbing to Annapurna basecamp which for the normal joe is still one hell of a step. We decided to climb up to her feet in July in the heart of monsoon and landslide season. The weather was difficult, the leeches were grim as anything and the climb was like going through the marathon wall each day before waking up to do it all again hoping that your body might have recovered in the interim. Getting to Basecamp with a camera still working for me was enough but to see this mountain clear as an on season day was amazing.

START //
The ‘Start’ of this blog is the end of 2014. 93 shows, amazing stories, two massive international trips, a new job, a new city, friends old and new and a lot of beautiful photos to share. Over the next couple days, I will be posting my best of 2014 and in the meantime.. check out my instagram to get an idea of what’s to come!
Here’s a shot of The 1975 at Terminal 5 in early December. I was commissioned to shoot the show that came at the end of an incredible trip to New York and had an absolute blast.
