They killed the olive trees. They killed the little children. They killed the unborn. They killed the father. They killed the mother. They killed the journalist. They killed the journalists entire family. They killed all the aunts and uncles. They killed the doctors. They killed the soul of his soul. They killed the groom. They killed the bride. They killed the cats. They killed the elderly people older than their apartheid state. They killed the thousands of memories painted on the walls. They killed 30,000+ Palestinians that we will never get back. [@/ missfalsteenia on X. 01/07/24.]

I'm both aromantic and asexual and I can say that living in a world where people make sex and romance into everything sucks major ass but I feel like the world is a lot more hostile towards my aromanticism than my asexuality
Don't get me wrong—aphobia exist. I've encountered it in many instances both directly and indirectly, but in my experience, the topic of sex doesn't come up as often as romance. Maybe my immediate environment plays a part on it too but I find that generally, the topic of sex doesn't come up as often in day-to-day basis as romance does. The topic of sex is still seen as invasive and inappropriate to some degree—and while people shouldn't be afraid to talk about it or avoid it entirely, the taboo on that topic created a sense of boundary which makes it easier for me to navigate the world—and I could curate my online experience to exclude that topic for the most part. Explicit sexual content are NOT meant to be immediately visible or accessible online.
But romance? God that's EVERYWHERE. People turn everything into romance. People talk and inquire about romantic life with much less reservation than they do about sex. It's seen as less private because it doesn't necessarily entail the "gross" stuff sex does—even though people do make assumptions about it—so people have no qualms in prying about it—it's 'normal'. Prying about other people's romantic life is just casual curiosity. It doesn't make you a creep at all—thus makes it easier to receive hostilities if you even so much as to imply that you don't put that much importance on it in your life. The media makes everything about romance. Even stories that aren't about romance has romance on them—and even if they don't? People WILL find a way to make it into romance somehow. There's literally no way to block the topic of romantic love both online and in real life. How am I supposed to do that? Block every ship tag in every media I'm into? People don't tag romance the way they do with sexual stuff. People don't refrain themselves from talking about romance and if you imply that you'd rather not talk about it, you're a bitch somehow.
And the thing is? I'm not even romance-repulsed. I don't mind hearing my loved-ones talking about their love life. I like seeing romance in stories. But when it's literally everywhere you look at, when you hear it from every single person that comes your way in every corner of the world and everyone worships and glorifies it like it's the most wonderful gift humanity could ever receive? it's just a constant reminder that this world isn't made for me and I'm not welcome here.

"everyone experiences [symptom]" how many times does it have to be explained that it's often about the frequency of the symptom, not the symptom itself

It's all "you guys need to understand how SUBTEXT and CODING are usually the only confirmation of representation queer people get in media especially in older media" but once that subtext and coding is used to say a character might be aro or ace coded/have aro/ace subtext then suddenly it's not a valid way to claim representation. Then it's only "headcanon" or "not confirmed" like do you all hear yourselves? It'd be so much easier to say you hate aro/ace ppl at this rate!

society would have us believe that sex and romance define humanity
actually it’s our ability to select each image that contains a crosswalk

there's this push in media on the idea that it's okay to act aromantic and/or asexual as long as you replace those expected things with ambition. babe i'm just here to vibe. i was not put on this earth to have a fucking career. where are the rest of the chill aspecs who don't do shit

I like playing a fun game called: "Is This A Crush, (In Which Case I'm Lying About Being Aroace), Aesthetic Attraction, Gender Envy, Or Very Strong Platonic Attraction (Wanting To Be In A QPR With Them)?"
It's the kind of game you can't win.
