For the Curly Haired Peps
What are the best tips for curly hair?
Figure out your hair type! Figuring out one’s curly pattern such as wavy or 4C curls will help their hair in the long run. Blay states, "The real beauty of identifying your hair type is that you're better at understanding how to care for your texture so you can have more versatility," explains Anthony Dickey, the curl wizard behind the Hair Rules salon and brand.
Look for shampoos and conditioners that have plant extracts, aloe vera, keratin, hydrolyzed silk and animal proteins, panthenol and provitamins, natural or essential oils, and shea butter (Cafasso, 2020). Why Keratin? Cleveland states that keratin helps in the growth of hair, nails, and the epidermis, the outermost layer of skin (2022).
Again, especially curly hair, people shouldn't shampoo everyday; it will strip one’s hair of natural oils! To find the best cleansing routine for you, you might need to try a few different approaches. Try shampooing every three days or every other day as a general rule (Cafasso, 2020).
The way someone sleeps affects their hair. It's best to sleep on the side or stomach if one has curly hair to preserve the health of their curls. During the night, wearing a headscarf or bonnet might further help protect curls (Cafasso, 2020).

How to Deal with Dry or Damaged Hair
Medline states that “dry hair is hair that does not have enough moisture and oil to maintain its normal sheen and texture.” (2022).
How do we deal with dry hair?
Trimming one’s hair can help get it to a better state. Watson states that trimming helps dry ends disappear leaving a fresh cut (2023). From experience, having long, dyed, and layered hair made my ends very dry. However, getting a trim and the right shampoo and conditioner made my hair look fresh and healthy!
Make sure to get the right vitamins. Iron, biotin (also known as vitamin H), vitamin C, and vitamin A can all help hair appear healthier, claims Watson (2023). Trying a vitamin that has hair, skin, and/or nails on the label will be an easy way to research for the correct vitamins. Nonetheless, people need to make sure to read the ingredients on the back of the label making sure they have the correct ingredients too.
Make sure to use heat protectants or stop heat styling all together. Lee mentions,
“Repeated cycles of wetting and blow-drying can cause multiple cracks on hair cuticles9. Other studies reported damagecaused by curling irons. Hair shampoo surfactants and daily hair drying (including heat drying) causes damage to the ultrastructure of the hair, as well as color changes.” (2011).
Don’t wash your hair everyday! Washing hair everyday or using too much shampoo can strip sebum. “Sebum is the natural oil that makes your hair easier to maintain and, when you have the right amount, shiny. Too much sebum leads to a greasy hair appearance.” (Watson, 2023)

Hair Advice for All (Pt. 2)
Try a hair mask once or twice a week because hair masks make hair feel and look healthy. How? They’re rich in nutrients and moisture, so hair masks penetrate the hair shaft deeply, strengthen hair follicles, minimize breakage, and improve the general condition of hair (“Earth Collective”, 2023).
Try a scalp massager and use it every time you shampoo your hair or when you feel like you need to. Scalp massage in a circular clockwise motion from the sides, top, back, and all around. From experience, scalp massaging helps with hair growth and gets all the oil and gunk out of hair!

Hair Advice for All (Pt. 1)
Many hair experts recommend all to use a conditioner with their shampoo every time they wash their hair! (Logan, 2020). “Conditioners are used to decrease friction, detangle the hair, minimize frizz and improve combability. Conditioners act by neutralizing the electrical negative charge of the hair fiber by adding positive charges and by lubricating the cuticle that reduces fiber hydrophilicity.” (Dias, 2015).
Besides a good shampoo and conditioner, get a clarifying shampoo. Like many clarifying shampoo bottles say, one should use a clarifying shampoo at least once a week to fully detox their scalp and to help get it back to its normal state. From experience, they eliminate a lot of grease.

How to Deal with Oily Hair
According to Medline, “oily hair is the result of the oil (sebaceous) glands in the scalp producing large amounts of oil.” (2022)
How do we deal with oily hair?
Get the right shampoo and conditioner. For oily scalps, make sure the label says for oily or oily to normal hair. Genesis College states that people need to make sure shampoos and conditioners have no sulfates, parabens, polyethylene glycols, triclosan, formaldehyde, synthetic fragrances, and colors, dimethicone, and retinyl palmitate. If these are in one’s shampoo, they should throw it out! It’s doing their hair more damage than good.
Emily Belfiore, who is an experienced journalist who covers topics like pop culture, beauty, and lifestyle, highly recommends:
CHI Tea Tree Oil Shampoo
Rocky Mountain Barber Company Forest Mint Shampoo
ArtNaturals Luxe Tea Tree Oil Shampoo
Belfiore states that all these shampoos will help hair health like removing build up, dandruff, and irritation (2021).

P.S. If one's scalp gets oily fast, the American Academy of Dermatology recommends washing oily hair at least once a day. However, it’s ok to sometimes skip a day. We all do it!

Hair Care 101
Hair Care is defined as the care for hair with hygiene and any involvement in cosmetology. Throughout the years many people have learned hair care tips from social media platforms like TikTok, Pinterest, and Instagram, but how do we know if these influencers are telling us the correct things? We don’t! Making sure people accurately research personal hair care recommendations like products will help them more in the long run. Instead of trusting a random stranger on their media feed that has no knowledge of hair but is pretending like they do.
Everyone has different hair types and knowing how to treat your kind such as curly, wavy, straight, oily, dry, etc. will benefit your hair and your confidence overall.
