A Cube Has Six Sides: The White Cube as Medium
We’re pleased to announce Parker Kay’s new book, which codifies and examines the development and meaning of the white cube gallery.
“As the idea of documentation as art rather than documentation of art continued to permeate through contemporary art, artists and curators began to apply a post-Internet sensibility to the curation of exhibitions and the establishment of galleries. Within this changing context, the very notion of the gallery also shifted.”
Pre-order a physical copy ($18 CAD) by emailing [email protected]
Digital copies can be downloaded from http://parkerkay.com

EEATT: Everything Everywhere All The Time
June 18, 2016, 7:30PM
8eleven, 233 Spadina Avenue, Toronto
facebook page
The Canadian Academy in Rome is hosting three artist talks/readings at the 8-11 gallery. Parker Kay, Stephane Gaulin-Brown, and Alex Willms will present recent work dealing with images, the self, shapes, space, and the city.
The talks will be followed by music and drinks. New CAiR publications will also be on display and available for purchase.
PARKER KAY: Aesthetics of images, desire, and love
Contemporary culture is built upon an endlessly expanding foundation of images. These images mediate and, to a large degree define, the way we cultivate meaning in the important aspects of our lives. In A Cube Has Six Sides: The White Cube as Medium Parker Kay explored the way in which the dissemination of digital images online has redefined the public's relationship to contemporary art and the White Cube.
For this talk he will continue this focus on images – more specifically, the connection between the images we construct of ourselves and how they affect the way we build relationships, and how emotions like desire and love can influence aesthetics and artistic production.
STEPHANE GAULIN-BROWN: Thinking in Shape
The void between objects we call space. The number of objects creates the shape, and their position to one another its sub-form. The shape itself is another object, which by its void has characteristics beyond the individual objects. Shapes are everywhere beyond the sight of our eyes, and yet we reside in their space. This talk will wander through a work in progress that explores the space of human shapes.
ALEX WILLMS: Shit Ship City
“Rome wasn’t built in a day.” Is there a greater cliché than this one? But in North America we often assume that the city is complete – not a project in the process of becoming. Our cities are mere adolescents compared to the grandfather cities of Rome, Paris, and Madrid. This continent is a massive experiment; we are still in the process of redefining how humans should live together in a settlement. And yet, it often seems as if the city grows without a brain and therefore without direction. Who is calling the shots around here? Who let Toronto build so many shitty condos?
Alex Willms will read from Shit Ship City, his recent book of photos and writing on the aesthetic of the emerging city.

“It was drizzly and dark outside, as is usual at that time of year. Inside, the amber fire cast shadows between the exposed floor joists above; the whole place was only about three-quarters finished, which is the way all cabins should stay.”
This book is a reflection and documentation of an experimental installation on Cobble Hill mountain.

Evolving Canadian Culture Through Global Discourse
For too long, Canada’s rich cultural diversity has existed largely in isolation from the ongoing global conversation.
In the 21st century we need our institutions to strengthen international dialogue, sharing Canadian ideas abroad. Far from diluting our unique worldview, a generous exchange can deepen our own identity and provide us with new opportunities.
An evolving and diverse culture isn’t a side-effect of a flourishing society; it is integral to a resilient and progressive economy.
Rather than debating which disciplines to prioritize over others, let’s evaluate each cultural project. By placing funding in domains that encourage global discourse we can enrich Canada and the world.
This text was written for Ontario’s Culture Talks, part of the Open Government commitment to gather public input before policies are made.

October Update
Hey guys! We’ve been silent for a while now, but that’s because we’ve been hard at work getting some great things ready for you.
First big news item is that we are now an official not-for-profit corporation. We’ve also been accepted as a Canadian publisher, so we can now request ISBNs and legally publish our own material.
Our first publication, soon to be released, is an expanded interview with the Italian architecture firm 2A+P/A. The idea behind this project is to give more meaning and context to the content of the discussion. Interviews often contain interesting points that get lost in a long stream of dialogue; our approach is to periodically break off from the interview to expand upon or clarify an idea. The result is what we call an “expanded interview”, which includes images, drawings, and additional text.
This publication will be available soon, both digitally and in print. Keep an eye out!

EVENT 004
REDRAWING ROSSI: An Exhibition
In 1988 Visual Arts Ontario commissioned Italian architect Aldo Rossi to design the temporary Lighthouse Theatre in Toronto: Rossi’s second building in North America. It was installed along the lakeshore, on the grounds of the iconic R.C Harris Water Treatment Plant. Complaints from nearby residents led to an ironic turn of events when the project was moved inland to a traffic median.
The Lighthouse Theatre is an outdoor walled-in theater built in the form of a horseshoe with a tower at its apex. The stage is flanked by two towers finished with the same yellow painted board and batten as the perimeter wall. Framed in the space between the towers is a set of three facades. These comprise a segment from the image of a city – particularly a North American one – held within the framework of Rossi’s architecture.
The Canadian Academy in Rome’s exhibition of the short-lived and long demolished Lighthouse Theatre is a form of altered memory and creative misinterpretation.
The exhibition consists of sketches done by Rossi himself, first design drafts, iterations of the design, and also photographs of the final built work. To this collection we have added our own drawings: images made during a different era with different sensibilities and technologies. These drawings challenge the terminality of design. We propose a new way of interpreting architecture: one which is not definitive, but something continually open to iteration. Why not continue the design process even after a building is built, and even if the project is not one’s own? A significant step in this process is the redrawing and altering of the project’s aesthetic sensibility.
Through an intentional misinterpretation we can arrive at a new architecture.
