oh shoot I'm back edition!
alrighty so, hi, it's been a bit. so I guess I should explain my absence a bit but I ended up getting a certain respiratory illness which included trouble breathing, headaches, nausea, fatigue, and it was so bad that it took me out for basically an entire week.....
yeah pneumonia isn't fun
anyway......
what have I been up to that hasn't been staying in bed all day while doom scrolling way too far in TikTok...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
probably a tiny thing here but I reorganized my ipad icons a bit, keeping all the drawing apps on one screen (plus the battery info for the pencil), socials on the next, and games at the end. seems less overwhelming....and cuz I like the background art ^^; (art by @wavecipher)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
solar eclipse! we had to drive out an hour towards the path of totality to be able to see it, but honestly this was one of the coolest experiences I've ever got to witness! pictures don't do it full justice and it's really hard to describe the mood. just being able to witness the moon slowly creeping in front of the sun slowly while experiencing this beautiful mix of daytime and nighttime vibes simultaneously....aaaa! I was really sad before I wasn't able to see much of the 2017 eclipse previously and I wanted to make certain it worked out this year, and just so happened that everything lined up perfectly (teehee) to be able to see this! (top pic taken by amber, the others by me)
Tumblr media
butts! I ended up using a combination of pose to pose and straight ahead animation here. I wanted to try and push myself with this and experiment, and I'm discovering a bit that I enjoy doing things like water splooshes. down the line I wanna touch on more things like water ripples or fire animation too.
all of this happened before I got sick and bedridden and I was a bit worried that I would lost the drive to anima--
Tumblr media
nope! still got it! I'm pretty happy with how this came out! I asked for a random object and a random action at home and got "apple" and "jumping" and I decided to add the bit at the end with it bonking and bruising itself. I used a mix of drawing individual frames, but also simple subtle transforms when the change was minimal anyway to streamline the work just a bit.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I originally struggled with getting the impact to look right. adding a smoke cloud and simulating a camera shake seemed to help with that (which I struggled originally because I tried to keyframe it in capcut but because it's animated of twos that came off weird and the earthquake effect didn't satisfy me either so I had to just manually move everything in toonsquid...which ended up taking less time overall anyway) I especially like the doubling/smear frame I made right before it hits the ground.
I think improvements I wanna make is planning out the facial expressions more. there is a point where the apple realizes it loses balance but I think it happens way too fast to be properly noticible at full speed. also I did abuse the transform tool juuust a bit much at the end so maybe I'll stick with reserving that for ease in and outs.
youtube
lately I've been in a bit of a Starfox kick. I ended up finding the N64 cartridge at a game shop (only $40 USD which was definitely a bit cheaper than I was expecting for a first party title) and I'm honestly really impressed with how well it looks compared to the NSO version on switch, particularly with transparency effects, colours seem bolder (the gold rings in particular stand out more), and how smooth the game runs overall (with occasional but expected slowdowns in certain areas). also the voice samples seem to sound more accurately to a radio signal. I also wanna see if I can get the 3ds version of SF64 sometime too and compare that.
alrighty so apologies for the extra word salading this time around but there was a lot to catch up on. hopefully I can keep up a bit more as I start to get back towards 100%

you know i don’t think we often talk about how difficult it actually is to suddenly realize that a belief you thought was good and moral and correct was actually really fucking toxic. how you have to look at something and go ‘oh shit, oh i fucked up. oh this is going to take probably years at minimum to deprogram from my brain because of all the little ways this shit pervaded the rest of my beliefs’
so. to all the people picking up all the pieces of a recently shattered world-view and trying to figure out what is safe to keep and what has to be thrown away and started over
to all the people having to relearn how to even listen to other people
to all the people putting in the work to do better while struggling with the guilt that comes from finding out you were the asshole
i’m proud of y’all.
it’s hard to admit being wrong and even harder to change in the aftermath. just keep doing the best you can and just know that the effort is appreciated. everyone can change. everyone can do better. keep fighting.

Word Salad #11
firstly wheee trans day of visibility was yesterday...which snuck up on me like it does every year.
Tumblr media
a bit over a decade ago was when I first started seriously thinking about myself being trans. before that the idea of me wearing women's clothing, especially skirts and dresses just excited me in ways I didn't fully understand at the time. Even still today, while I don't have that same thrill now that I present female all the time, skirts and dresses are still my favourite types of clothing to wear. I've always wondered growing up why girls tended to have a lot more outfit choices, whereas men was primarily just the same few styles. one example was when having to dress nice for high school concerts, the males tended to all look the same while the females often had a lot more personality and variety. the difference always intrigued me.
in 2013 I ended up joining an online community where a lot of the members were experimenting with being a girl and I figured id give it a try, only to find later on that I was much happier being addressed as feminine. I guess being in a community where I felt safe enough to explore those feelings helped me discover a lot about myself. It's where I originally started writing these journals for people to read and comment on while we all were exploring ourselves. it's where i met Amber, starting off as just friends, and then starting a relationship together....and then meeting IRL and then eventually living together. All while still allowing me to express myself fully.
I've witnessed and even helped many others also explore their own identities. sometimes it's a bit nostalgic as I recall my own feelings from owning my first feminine clothing to coming out to taking my hormones for the first time. Honestly makes me feel happy every time <3
I guess if anything, I wanna leave with this.....if you haven't seen Nemona yet I highly recommend it!

hey hi hey jklfds;ajfklds aaaaa i did a thing aa babababa look!
it ball! 🥺
ok so, i like dabbling with animation a bunch. yesterday I ended up watching a bunch of animation tutorials including One where an animator walks through the process of drawing an animation inbetween...on paper and another one which talks about using timing charts to figure out where a drawing should go.....also on paper!! I understand that like digital vs traditional art each has its own flaws and benefits and whatnot, but what intrigues my brain, personally, is how people were drawing all these super nice well animated shots without the aid or assistance of a computer! and I guess seeing how they explain the process and what they're thinking while they're flipping pages around and eyeballing where the nest line should go, and all this from practice and experience. it gets me thinking like how can this be applied to the software we have today.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i made these on toonsquid on ipad earlier. i think learning timing charts and learning easing in and out helps make animation a bit livelier, and also helped with learning where to draw the inbetweens which i tended to struggle with the most. i think my mindset during all this is just "if people did this on paper over a century ago, i can do this today" and honestly....it's actually a lot simpler than i expected. still time consuming no doubt, but simple.
youtube
also related side tangent, when I first started watching friendship is magic, I found a youtube channel where someone was going through the show and analyzing the animation. I was hooked so hard to these, and it's amazing just how much time and effort the animators would put into the show. after seeing this and also the double rainboom flash puppet tutorials, that led me to spontaneously make this asdflyra parody while I quickly put together a Lyra flash puppet from scratch. currently this video is my most watched animation with currently 21K views aa
youtube
so yeah, thats all i got for now. i'm definitely excited to dabble more with animation stuff down the line now that I'm slowly finding a process that works for me.

Word Salad #9
so today I wasn't able to get much cleaning done like i wanted, I kinda got distracted with something...
So the gaming setup I mentioned last week on word salad 3, I was originally thinking of getting a more expensive upscaler, but after thinking about it for a while, I only really need it for the PS2, the 360 we have outputs progressive scan anyway so that's no issue, and the Wii/GC will be primarily progressive scan anyway, so mainly I just need to find one that specifically works for the PS2, but also works on PS1 mode as well.
youtube
I stumbled on this and it seems to cover what I'm looking for which is properly upscaling the PS1/480i modes for modern tvs. it's also $100 USD cheaper too.
it's a bit of a bummer how expensive of a hobby gaming is, especially for retro consoles. not even just stuff wearing down but how modern tvs have an extremely hard time with old consoles.
also just for fun I was curious to see how the snes starfox looked using retroarch crt filters.

I made grilled cheese! It was so yummy!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
sometimes when at work, i find myself getting lost in thought often. sometimes I start to get an idea that seems fun in my head. for a while I've tried to write these ideas down as my day goes on.....but then I start to notice that I'm writing so much i have no idea where to begin. so then i'm thinking maybe I shouldn't write down literally everything that pops in my head so I should wait until I get something really good. however, this ends up with me getting an idea so good I start imagining I get attention and start winning awards (so kinda like an Arthur flashback, especially 10:11 - 10:44) and then I quickly psyche myself out because it starts to get too ambitious for me aa. I feel I'm slowly finding a good balance as to figure out more realistic ideas, or trying to mesh and combine ideas when possible, or maybe see it from an entirely new angle as I get new experiences.
Tumblr media
Other than that I'm feeling mostly tired today as I'm recovering a bit from work, so here's a bunch of stuff I have on display here that I really like
plan for tomorrow is to start doing a bit of spring cleaning for the house so I'll likely need this extra time to rest anyway
so, yey
uhm
i'll end this off with something i relate with aa

here's me drinking a (pontification) potion based on art of Link from the NES manual.
wow, its already been one week.
my original goal was to try this out for one week before I decided on if I wanna continue or not. I still haven't fully decided, but I wasn't quite expecting this to go anywhere or for anyone to really notice. I will say, it does feel good that I was able to keep this going for the whole week; several past attempts fell flat very fast. I've sort of approached this differently than I have before, trying to allow myself to let my thoughts flow freely and less worry about how I would be potentially perceived. if anything, I'm a little surprised these posts have gotten *more* attention than what I've done before aa. maybe I will keep this up as long as folks are enjoying these.
so anyway
on my TikTok fyp I stumbled on someone struggling to open up a biscuit can thingy that pops open when you out pressure on the side of it. and now I have the urge to make biscuits myself....heck I wanna try making pigs in a blanket using croissant rolls and hot dogs (oooo or maybe cheese dogs!! yeah!) I honestly enjoy cooking things, especially when the payoff is something yumny~
main things I like to cook are pancakes, grilled cheese, eggs (fried, scrambled and even omelettes), Mac and cheese (boxed and Velveeta), potatoes and gravy, stuffing, muffins, cupcakes, fkqigoeo this list is going to be long aa. point is, food yummy and I like making it. my absolute favourite has to be tacos, which seems to be everyone else's favorite too. 🌮
ok now I definitely wanna cook up a whole meal in the next few (minutes) days

Happy Fourth of Fluttershy!
Tumblr media
So while I was drawing this, anytime I made a mistake I had to stop myself from attempting to two finger tap the calendar to undo the line *note to myself get better at drawing....lines....✏📝*
hjfkdlsa actually that reminds me, earlier I found a drawing tip tiktok on my fyp aaa and I think it's very well explained in a way that just made sense to me
and while we're talking about tiktok, here's a commercial that popped up on my fyp that I remember seeing as a kid. I got excited because it had tips for Donkey Kong 64 and I wanted to see what they were (I genuinely don't remember what tips they had, but taking my best guess it was tips for things I had already figured out).
youtube
and I guess a similar thought train, Lunchables was doing a promotion where they had Donkey Kong 64 tips on these collectable "cards" that you cut out and had tips on the back side.
Tumblr media
but what very much upset me about it.....the card for Chunky's talked about a specific move that you activated when you pushed A and B at the same time. I tried pressing just about every combination of A and B I could think of while trying to get inside one set of doors that never opens and that always bugged me because I was convinced that there was some sort of unknown secret hiding inside (9 year old me was so desperate aa). In retrospect.... it looks like whoever wrote these just made up all the names of the moves on the fly and I just took it literally
Tumblr media
going back a tad, something I remember specifically about the Fruit by the Foot tips was they had the website "nintendo.com" on it and that prompted me to head to my local library (since I'm pretty sure my family didn't have internet just yet) and check out the website and that's where I discovered it had a treasure trove cove of cheat codes! (honestly a little something I miss). I could def make a whole post about how 90s and 2000s nintendo.com was for me as I would visit there practically every day finding cheatcodes and watching trailers for new games coming out aaa
also tiny note, but the past couple days I've been getting notifications on my phone anytime one of my world salads got a like and....aaa i never know how to explain this feeling but it's like yay i'm happy you like it but also i feel like i'm just spilling out whatever comes out of my head and I guess people like that?? either way i hope it makes your day in some way aaa

Tiny Twilight also says hi!
this particular drawing I doodled one day during some downtime at work. ice been wanting to try and experiment more this year than in previous years. I have a tendency to draw my sona over and over and over all in the same few poses and almost always smiling, which while I feel I've gotten pretty decent at, it sorta gets old after a while.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
here's another one I drew also during work downtime. I was feeling especially grumpy that day so I figured drawing myself as such would be a good excuse to practice that...and also reference Dan Vs (which I also bought the first season on DVD back in the day ^^;)
I guess also work related (funny how I tried to avoid talking about work but here I am doing it anyway aa) is this animation I did at the beginning of this year while experimenting with toonsquid on the iPad. I wanted to see how quickly I could make a full animation and I pushed myself a bit to make it look good as possible. my original goal was to post one animation per week, however I got caught in what I will call an infinite ambition loop. basically, I ended up having ideas that way surpassed my current abilities. I'm trying to find ways to manage my own expectations and try to set more realistic goals like trying to utilize more facial expressions and different body poses. so, we'll see how that goes.

word salad #4
happy twilight Thursday!
Tumblr media
today is a work day and something I'm thinking about right now is, yes just because this may be a daily blog doesn't necessarily mean I need to go into full detail about how every part of my days go. otherwise I'd be ranting about work for a vast majority of these entires.
so instead I wanna talk about... retro 3D platformers
a while back I came across a game called Cavern of Dreams. it claims itself to be inspired by retro 3D platformers. it features low poly graphics and textures with simple lighting effects, reminiscent of late N64 games. the gameplay feels very much like if Conker's Bad fur day was lighthearted and wholesome. what's also neat is camera controls are more reminiscent of later games, Mario sunshine and Zelda wind waker immediately come to mind for me. I've gotten through the first part of the game and really loving it so far, and the controls are probably the best I've seen in a long time.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
but while thinking about this, I sorta made a bit of a realization... growing up, games like this were referred to as adventure games instead of 3d platformers. heck, I don't think I've seen the term "platformer" until around the mid 2000s. even Mario games I think we're more well known as action adventure games, or Zelda games being a puzzle adventure. PC adventure games tend to be point and click games, which is vastly different than what consoles typically offered. I personally think that NSMB for the DS may be in part why we now make this distinction as the 2D Mario games play vastly different than their 3D games, notably being easier to pick up and play.
but while on this thought train, I sorta began to wonder what sort of similarities that 3D platformers from this era had vs a point and click adventure game. what I ended up deciding on was: exploration. point and click games, you topically make progress by exploring the world around you and finding clues and solving puzzles by exploring the environment and talking to npcs. 3d platformers is... actually kinda the same, while typically focusing on item collecting, many similar elements show up such as exploring worlds and finding ways to progress by interacting with the levels and different characters.
while on that thought about collecting items...
a lot of late 90s and early 2000s platformers would feature collecting a long list of items. one prominent example is donkey Kong 64, which tends to be known as the game that killed collectathons. I have some thoughts on but I'll save for another entry, but I guess I will say that calling such games a collectathon very much misses the point of what the game is actually about. is it a game where you are sent out into a level and made to collect all the random items scattered on the ground, or is it a game where you're friends have been captured and your hoard of bananas have been stolen and you must rescue your friends and recover your bananas in order to progress while learning new moves and meeting interesting creatures who either help you or try to intervene. I dunno about most, but I like the latter premise better. (or maybe I out much more weight on a storyline for a game as opposed to the gameplay)
I hope this entry wasn't too hard or confusing to read, I guess I'm mostly rambling and jotting down bits and pieces of what's in my mind when I get a couple minutes of free time.
uhm..
pineapples (I need a better way to end these aa)
